Stephen Coburn son of Eleazer Coburn and Mary Weston was born 11 Nov 1817 in Old Canaan, Somerset County, Maine and died 04 Jul 1882. He married Helen Sophia Miller daughter of Rev Charles Miller and Susan Drew Thompson 29 Jun 1853. She was born 25 Mar 1832 in Turner, Andrscoggin County, Maine and died 03 Jun 1910. They are both buried at Southside Cemetary, Skowhegan, Somerset County, Maine. See his grave marker.
Stephen graduated Waterville College 1839, a lawyer in Skowheagen, and was the first Preceptor of the Academy on the Hill (1840-44). He attended school at Waterville and China Academies. He taught in Tarboro, North Carolina for an year. He then returned to Maine where he was Principal of Bloomfield Academy for 1840-44. He was admitted to the bar in 1845 and opened an office in Skowhegan with his brother Alonzo. He then became partner with Henry Augustus Wyman under the firm name of Coburn and Wyman until the death of Wyman on 6 December 1867. He was associated with Daniel Cony Robinson 1872-1874. In 1853 he was attorney for the State in Somerset County. In 1860 he was elected representative to the 36th Congress to fill the unexpired term of Israel Washburn, who had been elected Governor of Maine. He was Postmaster of Skowhegan, 1868-1877, a member of the State Board of Education from Somerset County 1848-49. See another picture
