JANUARY 1st 1845 

 

Fine. A happy new year!!!.  Papa & Mamma came home at 1 o. clock from Inchmarlo. I had a bad cold in my chest.  Dr. Mackie, Uncle Alexander, Aleck Pirie, Mr Fred. Holland, Gordon & Pat Pirie called.  The streets are thronged. Papa & Mamma & the gents made their usual new years calls.  Duncan Pirie dined here.  We had a merry evening. We played whist!!!  The children were in great spirits.  We had a letter form Jimmie in the evening.

2nd Janry 45 

Damp.  Still a cold.  A M'Grigor called. Mamma made calls.  I read the Diary by Miss Bremer. Al dined at the Skenes Lethenty.  Nothing particular happened.

3rd Jany 

Fine.  Mrs Gordon also Col G and Miss M'Phherson.  The Hays, Mrs Clements Lumsden, Mary Anne & Pat dined with the M'Kenzies Glack at Hazlehead.  We went to Mrs F.Gordon to a nice party badly conducted

4th Jany 45 

Fine.  Mamma & Magt went to Heathcot and Union Grove.  We had a nice walk. 

Sunday 5 Jany 1845

Fine.  Lovely sunset.  Went twice to church. Mag & Will went in the morning to Mr, Davidson.  We had the usual reading in the evening. I should like Dr. Forsyth better if I paid only more attention.  May I be enabled to cease from worldly thoughts on Gods holy day!  

6th January 

Very fine.   Miss Farquharson Haughton called.  We were out for a very nice walk indeed. Pat & Mary Anne dined at Miss Grants Monymusk.  They saw some of Sophia's jewels which are beautiful.  

7th January 45 

Fine.  I went for a long walk with little Mary to the old Bridge of Dee.  Mag & Will went also a long walk.  We all dined at Seton (except Al who was engaged to Mrs. Farquhars) and had a very pleasant evening.  

8th January /45 

Very fine.  We had some shopping and we all 4 went together. Papa & mamma dined at Mrs Forbes' Castleton.  Aleck Will & I went in the evening.  A pleasant enough little party. I played for the rest to dance a great deal!  I like dancing better.

9 January 

Fine.  We had our usual nice walk,  I am reading The President's Daughters by Miss Bremer. I like it very much.  We went to a delightful ball given in honor of John Michell at Pat Piries.  There was a splendid supper. It was uncommonly well conducted and everything went off well.  Poor Mrs P. made the greatest efforts her poor little girl is very ill indeed.  

10th January 

Fine windy.  Will & I made some calls & then took Papa for a walk.  Mamma & he dined at Dr. Keiths though Mamma was little able for she became quite sick after dressing.  Pat & Al dined at the Hotel with the Irvines of Drum as Mr. I had been today served heir to his father!!!

llth January 

Fine today.  Dreadful wind & rain during the night.  I fear there have been some wrecks. I wish Miss Bremer would make her good characters act more from religious than philosophical feelings as they do.  Today we had Major Taylor, Mr. W. Lumsden, Dr. Mackie & Willie M'Grigor at dinner. Mrs M'G very ill.  

Sunday 12th January 1845 

Fine.  We went to church. May goes to Mr. Davidson's Free church. Mr. William Forbes ! walked up from church with Will & me.  Al read one of Ridochs sermons in the evening.  

Monday 13th January

Wet.  I went out to ask little Mary & big Mary to come in the evening as we had a small party.  The Farquharsons Haughton the Piries, etc etc.  We dined in the evening. I played the whole night.  

 

14th Jany  45

Not fine.  We went out  & had a walk with Miss Nuttall.  Mama called at Seton.  Mr. W.F> called!  We went to a tea, polka & scandle party at Mrs Murrays!!  We were very merry.  

Wednesday 15th Jan y /45 

Fine.  Papa Will & I went to Denmore.  We had a very interesting evening. !!

16th Jan 45 

Fine. We had hosts of callers.  Mamma & I then went  to make some calls.  My cold is very bad indeed.  We are busy practising very pretty music.

17th Jan

Damp.  Will & I selected a beautiful Bible for Kemlo. Every body we met asked us why we had not gone to the assembly.  

18th Jan 

Wet. The Forbes Balgownie made a long call and we had a nice chat.  Mary Jane M'Grigor and the Smiths came to tea we had some amusing games.  

Sunday 19th Jany 45 

Fine cold.  We all went to church.  The Irvines Drum were in our Pew. I like Mr. Forsythe better & better.  Pat read aloud in the evening.  Mary Anne is suffering a great deal from pain in her eyes. 

20th January  1845 

Fine cold.  We walked out.  Mary Anne's eyes are very bad indeed.  Mamma called on the Thomsons Banchory.  Little Mary & Gordon Forbes & M. Tawes dined with us.   

21st Jany 1845 

Very fine.  It is little Indian Duncans birthday.  Papa & Mamma went to Inchmarlo in the morning.  We drank L Dunnys health in tea!!  I fear he will consequently be a tea-bibber.  Mary Anne Par & Al dined at Seton.  Will & I went to an evening party at Col. Forbes.  Al joined us in the evening.

22nd Jan 45

Very fine.  John Michells marriage day.  We went for a walk with the Forbes of Balgownie and met the wedding party so splashed!! flying!!  Papa & Mamma came home in the evening after enjoying their Inchmarlo airing.    

23rd January 45

Wet.  Mary Anne & Pat arranging the opposite house for the Jeffreys. They dined at Provost Blaikies & Al and we two went in the evening.  It was a very nice party indeed. 

24th January 

Very fine.  Mag & I went shopping. M.A. & Pat dined at Mr J. Blaikies. Papa & Mamma dined at the Skenes Lethenty where Will & I went to tea.  Al dined at Mrs Forbes Castleton. 

25th Jany 45 

Damp.  We called on Mrs. Forbes Inverernan, Miss Nutall and Mrs Cochrane.  I practised a long time in the evening.  

Sunday, 26th January 1845

Very stormy indeed. Papa Will & I only went to Church as none of the others are quite well. Henry Pirie called.  We read as usual at night. Mr. Forsythe preached in the afternoon on the Lords Prayer - very impressively indeed. 

Monday 27th Jany 45 

Cold a sprinkling of snow.  We had at dinner the Hays Innes Arbuthnots & Sir W Johstone. In the  evening the Forbes Balgownie etc etc.  Maggie did not come down. I had as usual to play a great deal. I am glad I can do something!  

28th Jan 45 

Fine deep snow.  Mr Forsythe called and gave us a beautiful exhortation  and prayer.  The Miss Chalmers & Mrs Gordon Newton & her son & Henry Pirie dined with us. It was Duncan's birthday.  

 

29th January /45 

Very fine.  We made some calls. In the evening we went to Col. Forbes. We had a very pleasant party indeed.  

Thurs 30th Jan 

Very hard frost.  Will & I went to Cornhill to search for fresh flowers.   We took Harriet & Mary Forbes with us  In the evening we went t Mrs Millars Grand ball.  Our dresses were everywhere admired!  We enjoyed ourselves exceedingly - there were about 80 people.  

Friday 31st 

Cold, more snow.  We went out for a short walk.  Papa & Mamma dined at Capt. Monro's. At Pat and Will & I went to the Murrays where we had a very pleasant party.  

Saturday 1st February 1845 

Fine.  We went to Berry bank and then for a drive.  The Ramsays and little Mary called.  We wrote cards for the 7th etc, etc.

Sunday 2nd February/45 

A thaw rain. We went twice to church. I like Dr. Forsythe very much indeed. Will & I read in Mamma's room.

 

3rd February 

Fine. Made some calls had a turn with Mary & Harriet.  Had a grand making of orange jelly!!  Pat dined at Mrs Farquhars.  Mary Anne is still suffering from her inflamed eyes.  The Ramsays called.  

4th February 

Fine. Henry Pirie called. We went out shopping, had a good deal of writing today & went to Major Grants in the evening.. Mamma & Papa went to dinner.  Al dined at Miss Brebners.  Reading History of Palestine. 

5th Feby

Showery.  We hear Mrs Forbes Castleton is ill. We were busy making jelly etc for our party.  We had a great deal of fun in the parlour in the evening.

 

6th February 

Exceedingly cold. Mrs. Forbes very seriously ill. Very little hope of her recovery. Papa & Mamma dined at Mrs Gordons Newton. We went in the evening.  We did not go to the assembly.  

 

7th February 1845 

Fine.  In the morning we half intended putting off our evening party as Mrs F. is not expected to live many hours but the time was too short.  We made all arrangements for the party which went on with a great deal of spirit indeed.  All seemed to enjoy themselves very soon.  It broke up around 1 o'clock.

8th February 45 

Fine.  Mamma went to Old Aberdeen but only saw Betsey - who says poor Mrs F suffers much. She died at quarter past 6 o'clock. It is a most striking event. 

Sunday 9th February 1845 

Damp day.  We went twice to church. Papa called at Westfield but did not see the Miss Chalmers. Will & I read in Mary Anne's room 

10th Feb 

Wet. We went out early to get some things as we are to wear slight mourning. We had numbers of callers today. We had a walk with Kate Millar, Henry Pirie and Anne dined with us. 

11th February 

Fresh snow!!  Busy writing read Conginsby. M dined with the Ross' we went to tea in the evening etc. Had pancakes trying for the ring!  We received a box full of little presents from dear Duncan & Kate yesterday. 

12th February 

Shower. We went to St Marys church but Dr Forsythe did not attend as his only little girl is just dying. Mary Forbes and I had a walk, such roads! 

Thursday, 13th February 

Fine.  I had first a turn with the Forbes Inverernan and then with Mrs. Hogarth. I called at the Adelphi. Will has such a cold she does not go  out.

Friday, 14th February

Very fine, cold. St Valentine's Day!  Papa & Al had each one.  I walked to the proint of the pier with Margt Forbes Balgownie. I called on Anne Pirie and sat some time with Katie.  The Forbes Migvie put off their party and never told Pat MA or Aleck who just by chance heard of it.

15th February 

Damp. Will & I made calls on Miss Arbuthnot, Lady Dunbar, Mrs Watson etc. MA and Pat dined at Mrs Gordon Newton, Mag at Unjcle Alexander & I took tea at Mrs Hogarths.

Sunday 16th Febnruary 1845

Very fine. We all went to church. Dr Pirie preached in the morning & Mr Edmund in the afternoon.

17th Feby 45   

very fine. Poor Mrs Forbes was buried today. We had a long walk up the Skene road. We had a little shopping. Mamma took Mrs Forbes Inverernan for a drive.  Little Mary had a walk with Margt. 

18th Feby

Gloomy. The children have all very bad colds.  Mamma Margt & I made no less than 6 calls.  Nothing particular happened. 

Wed 19th Feby

Very fine indeed. Papa & Mamma went to Inchmarlo in the morning and came home to tea at 8 o'clock. I walked with Margaret Forbes to the pier. Mag & Will called at Westfield.  Mary Anne Pat Al & I went to a small party at the Ross!! Wills cold prevented her going.  

20th Febry

Very fine. Margt & I had a delightful walk. Kate Leslie came on a visit today. I called Har. Forbes then had a turn with the Lindsays. Mr. Hays called. 

21st February/45 

Damp. Had a walk.  Mag & the Ballogies called.  Mrs William Lumsden is very ill indeed. Miss Arbuthnott sent me a song.  This was the night of the 88th Ball and a most delightful ball it was.  I danced the whole night!  Al Pirie sent us some beautiful flowers.

22nd February 

Showery. We went for a walk with dear Papa. We had bad accounts from poor Charles.  I do earnestly trust he may soon recover. We called on Har. Forbes.

Sunday 23rd February 1845

Not very fine.  Kate Leslie & I went to the Bishops. We were stupidly showed into the seat which the officers sit in!!  To repair our mistake we returned in the afternoon to Uncle Alexander's seat. All the rest went to the West church as usual.  

24th Feb 45 

A fine day but a sprinkling of snow.   Maggie Annie Pirie & I had a nice walk before luncheon. Willie has a swelled neck.  We went to a small party at Miss grants Monymusk. We acted charades, etc. etc 

25th Feby 1845 

Fine. The Doctor gave Willie a wash for her neck. We had a pleasant evening. Mary anne & Kate took tea at Mrs. Innes.

26th Feby 

Fine, cold, damp.   We called on the Inverernans.  Papa & Mamma dined at Miss Brebners. I called in the carriage for little Mary who then went with me to Miss B. We had a very amusing evening. 

27th February

Fine.  Mag & I walked to Louisville.  I went down to shop in the carriage.  We all went (except Margt) to the Bachelors Bal in the evening. Al went in his Kilt and looked very well.  Aleck Pirie gave us the most splendid bouquets, the finest in the room!!!  It was beautiful ball a number of fancy dresses.  Altogether it was an amusing ball. 

Friday, 28th February 

Windy.  I called and gave an account of the last night's ball to Mrs Innes & Miss Brebner. We had a most amusing evening at home at the expense of some of the people at the ball!!!!! 

Saturday, 1st March 1845 

Wetish.  Mary Anne Kate and Jane Annie went to Warthill at 2 o'clock. We hear that poor Charlie is better and has left for Forres.  The Forbes Inverernan called.  Poor Miss Catherine Farquharson Ballogie died this forenoon. She only took ill yesterday with inflammation. 

Sunday, 2nd Mrch 

Damp. Went twice to church.  Poor D. Forsyth seems to feel the death of his little girl. Read a beautiful sermon of Baptiste Noel in the evening. 

3rd March 

Weish.  We all had a good deal of letter writing. Mary & Harriet eat with us & chatted in the morning. Aleck & I went to Miss Murrays. We had a very nice party.  

4th March 45 

Fine, cold.  Mamma & Mag and I called at Balgownie Collate, Denmore & on poor Mrs. G. Hadden.  Mrs William Lumsden died at 10 o'clock.  Mamma & I called at Migvie House and on the Inverernans. We enjoyed a pleasant quiet eenig. 

 5th March 

A good fall of snow.  I went out called and sat with Kate Pirie and I then went to the Balgownies.  Will & I went in the evenign to Mrs Thos. Hogarths. We had a nice party. We brought Capt Farquhar home.  Al & M sang to us some of the party went to Col Forbes afterwards.  

Thursday, 6th March 

Fine, cold.  We made calls on Miss Grant, Mrs Mitchell Ogilive and at Mrs Millars.  Miss M made us turn and go down the street with her.  We had a merry walk.   The Inverernans all diend with us, also the Col George Forbes. 

7th March 

Wetish.  Mamma & I called at Westfield. Mrs Millar called here.  Papa Mamma & Pat dined at Uncle Alexanders.  May took tea at the Inverernans.  I went to enquire a bout a  cook!! 

8th March 45

Fine. We made a call at Elmfield. May & I had a very long walk with Papa up to Louisville etc.

Sunday 9th March 1845 

Fine. I have a bad cold. We all went to church. Pat went to Duncan.  Al read aloud. 

10th March 45 

Showery. We regretted much to hear of the death of our good friend Mr Chas Irvine. We were always glad to see him. Little Mary & Caroline Hay called. I played a great deal at the harp today.  I have a shocking cold. Will's neck is almost well.

11th March 

A cold showery spring day.  The Lindsays called. Har Forbes called. I have been reading some of Mrs Joanna Baillie's works.  Ane Pirie took tea here.  Aleck went down to Buchan at 5 morning. 

12th March 45 

Fine. Will & Mag walked out. Mamma and I called at Seton and had a drive.  Will & I went in the evening to Mr Thos Hogarths. A very small party.  As our carriage returned home there was a concussion between it and a cab. The carriage was damaged and the horses hurt. 

13th March

Fine, snowy, cold.  Will walked out by herself. There was a large party at Union Grove. It was a very nice one.

Friday, 14th March 

Deep deep snow. I dare say a foot deep all over besides wreaths.  We had a very stupid party. Capt & Mrs Munro, Mr & Mrs Pirie, Mr & Mrs Gordon Newton, Major grant, Mr & Mrs Watson!!!  They all played cards.

15th March

Beautiful day.  We walked as far as the Quarrys through the snow. We met a number of people walking. We had fun tonight and oysters for supper!! 

Sunday, 16th March 45 

Half a thaw. We all went to church. Al read to us as usual in the evneing. We had a sad letter from poor Charlie.  

Monday, 17th March.

Very cold. This is Papa's birthday. He is 72 years old.  May he yet enjoy many returns of this day, dear papa.  We set about getting Kate's commissions executed.  I forgot to mention last week that Julia Young wrote announcing her marriage to a Mr Carlyon an English clergyman.  We shall indeed be sorry to lose her.  Aleck Will & I went with cards which Dr Cruickshank had given us to the college Hall to see Mr Allison author of the History of Europe installed as rector of Marischal College. He gave us a beautiful speech but scarcely adverted to any religious subject which was a treat pity.

18th March 45

Fine a thaw.  I had the first of a short course of lessons on the harp from Mrs Browning. More shopping today/.  A M'Grigor & H Forbes called. I have been reading Miss striclands life of Queen Elizabeth.

19th March 45 

Frost very very cold.  We went to St Marys to Dr Forsythes class. It was so cold we could not take a walk so we called and sat a long time with the Forbes Balgownie. Margt  F is to go to India next winter to be married to her cousin Mr Kinloch Forbes.  Little Mary came to tea.  

20th March 

Very fine. We called at Granton Lodge and had a walk besides.  Nothing particular happened.

21st March

Wet kind of day.  We had plenty of time for reading, working, practising. There was a strong smell of fire in the Jeffreys drawing room. Pat went accross but it was a false alarm.

22nd March 45 

Damp.  Read practised etc. Mr Day called. Little Bessy Barns & Mary Jane M'Grigor came to tea. Pat went to Warthill.

Sunday, 23rd March 1845

Easter Day.  Most beautiful warm day. All the snow gone. We all went to church. Al took us for a tuirn after Church. Reading as usual. 

24th March 

Beautifully fine. We wre out a good deal with Mamma shoppping calling and walking for pleasure. We were caught in a shower and took refuge in old MissOgilvie's wehere met young Mr Irvine Drum.  Duncan Pirie dined with us.

25th March 45 

Very fine.  We called at Seton and afterwards wnet  out the Sken road. Papa & Mamma dined at Mrs Milns.  We 3 went to a small party at Grandholm (the Lindsays).  A lovely moonlight drive home we had.  Tehre were only officers at the party!!  I did not much like it. 

26th March 

Lovely day.  Ha Forbes had an early walk with us and the Balgownies our afternoon one. Papa & Mamma dined & we 3 went in the evening to Mrs Mitchell.  We had a very nice little party.

Thursday, 27th March 

Very fine. Mamma & Mag had a drive. Papa W and I went by the Innes to the pier.  We saw a whaler bound for Greenland going out.  We were dreadfully tied! 

28th March. 

Very windy.  We could not go out till late;  we were blown down Union Street. Pat going to Warthill.

29th March 1845 

showery.  Papa Mamma & Margt went to Inchmarlo but returned at night. Little Mary called. We went out a little, made a long call on Anne Pirie.

Sunday 30th March 1845

Rained in the afternoon.  We went to church.  Fanny is not very well poor wee thing. We had a beautiful sermon in the afternoon.  The text was "Prepare to meet thy God O Israel".  

31st March

Very fine.  We three had a long walk up the Skene road.  All our party from Warthill arrived to tea.  Al dined at Waterton, Papa at the G's Newton. 

 

Sunday 1st April 1845 

Fine.  I had my harp lesson from Mrs Browning. The Inverernans called at luncheon time and brought the Meiklejohns to see us.  Mamma Will and I went to Dunmoir.  Dear Mrs M really looks rather better. We afterwards called on Har. Forbes.

2nd April/45

Sea Fog.   This was the Fast day.  We all went to Chruch in the morning ,as Will had a bad headache I went alone in the afternoon.  Mr Bower of Maryfield and Mr Thomson BGelhelvie wer the officiating ministers.

3rd April

Fine.  Will not well.  May & I walked to the pier.  We went hunting for a nice showerbath. Mrs Forbes  took tea with us. We had a very nice evening.

4th April

Fine cold.  I went out a little and had a turn with the Forbes Balgowan. Nothing particular happened.

5th April 1845

Very cold.  We all went to Church. I was not at all well and obliged to keep bed.  Jane Hogarth  A.P and Mr. F Jane took tea here.

Sunday 6th April 1845 

Fine cold.  Sacrament Sunday. I was quite unable to attend.  All the rest went and were much pleased with Dr. Forsythe's excellent manner of conducting the service.  May they all have experienced the love of Christ in his wonderful condescension to the most unworthy.  We had distressing accounts from Forres. Poor unfortunate Charlie. 

7th April 45 

Fine.  I had fever all night. Al went down to Forres.  The rest went to Church. Magt has joined the Nonintrusionists so does not go to the same church. Very sorry. Pat & MA dined at Col Forbes.  We did not accept as it was a church day. It was a grand party. I am so glad we did not go.

8th April

Fine.  I do not know what passes downstairs but I read Life of Queen Elizabeth.  I was better rather. Will & May set about getting all Katies things.

9th April 1845

Fine.  May's birthday. Today has passed much the same as yesterday. Al came back from Forres with more faverable accounts of poor Charles. He4 has taken a religious turn and his mind is calm and of course happier.  

10th April

Showery.  Nothing particular happened. Pat & MA dined yesterday with the Jeffreys quietly.

11th April 1845 

Fine. I am rather better but weak from fever. Al & 'Will went to Grandholm to a party they were very late indeed. 

12th April

Very .  I had a little walkie and a long drive with Mamma & Mrs Forbes Inverernan. The Meiklejohns came to tea.  Al went to Alford.  

Sunday 13th April 45 

Showery.  They all went to church except me. I read a nice little book "Fruits of the Spirit".  Al came home at night.  Willie read one of Baptiste Noels beautiful sermons.

14th April

Very showery. The Balgownie Forbes came to tea. We enjoyed our evening very much.

15th April 45

Fine.  I have a dreadful cold and not able to come down.  Papa & Mamma went to Inchmnarlo and returned at night.  MA & Pat dined at Mr. Lumsdens Auchendon.

16th April

Fine. I read Derry one of Charlotte Elizabeth's works. Nothing particular happened. Al Pirie came and announced his marriage to Charlotte Lindsay. 

17th April

Fine.  I sat in Mamma's room.  Papa & Mamma went today to dine at Mr. Lumsdens. Al sold Hilda to raffle this morning. Mr. Weber was the lucking one and got Hilda for 8LLs and then sold her for seventeen!! 

18th April

Very fine.  I went out a very little with Mama and called for Mrs P. Pirie.  May went in the evening to the Inverernans where she found a levee!!

19th April

Very fine. Papa & Mamma went to Inchmarlo. They say it is looking beautiful.  I went out with Mary Anne. May & Will were busy packing the box to go to Bombay.  The M'Phersons called. Some little girls at tea.

20th April

Very fine warm.  We went ot Church. Mamma was tired.  The Jeffreys wer in our seat.  Papa dined at Seton.  Al went to hear Mr Noel at Saint Pauls.  

21st April 1845

Very hot.  I went out early with Fanny.  May & Will went to a meeting & hear Mr Noel.  They were much pleased with him.  MA 7 I shopped!  Papa & Mamma called for their new niece to be at Grandholm.  Al went to a party at Mrs. Miilnes given tot he gentlemen on the Circuit.

Tuesday, 22nd April 1845 

Very hot.  Will & I went out shopping. We ladies all met and went in a boxy carpet hunting.  I particularly wish to remember this evening in our room.  A and H. 

23rd April

East wind, hot sun.  Mrs Forbes Inverernan called early and sat a long time. Will May & I had a most satisfactory walk. We went into Granton Lodge at the window. I called at Mrs Millars for some music.  We have the most delightful letters from Charles who most wonderfully and by Gods almighty power alone has become a new man.  

24th April 

A fog, but very fine.  I wrote to Harriet Forbes.  We had a walk with Margt.  Forbes.  I suppose our last as she goes in Autumn to India.

25th April 45 

A fog.  We 4 & Mary Anne went to Murtle. Nothing particular happened. Mamma & Papa dined at the Revd Dr. Pirie. 

Saturday, 26th April 

Wet day. Aleck went down to see Charlie at Forres.  Anne Pirie took tea with us. the Chesnut was sent to Inchmarlo for its health.

Sunday, 27th April 1845 

Damp.  We went to Church. Mary Anne was not at all well. Will read aloud in the evening. 

28th April 

Very fine.  We took out the children for a walk.  The Lindsays called. We had a dinner party. Major & Mrs Jeffrys Col & Mrs Lindsay Mr & Mrs Hadden Mr & Mrs Clements Lumsden A Pirie Mr Maxwell, Provost Blaikie & Mr Henry Lumsden. Went on well 

29th April/45 

Very fine.  Mamma's birthday. May she see many happy days.  Mr. Leslie dined with us. Papa & Al dined at Waterton but poor Al Pirie was so ill that he could not leave bed. I hope he will not be very ill.

Fine.  Mag & I called for Mrs Jeffreys Miss Grant Drummuir Mrs Nuttall Mrs Mitchel and Miss Murrays!!!  We took a short walk - Isabella & Sophy Forbes took tea.  Papa Aleck & Mr Leslie dined at the Club.

Thursday 1st May 1845

Very fine.  I took my last lesso on the harp. We went to see the Lidnsays.  Poor Al Pirie is much better.

2nd May /45 

Showery.  Mamma & Will went to Inchmarlo and took Sheperd to do up the house.  Mag & I dined at Major Jeffreys. We spent a pleasant evening. 

3rd May 

Showery.  There was a fearful shower of hailstone. They came tumbling down the chimney. Papa went yesterday to warthill. Mamma & Will returned.  Al Pirie was t tea.

Sunday 4th May 1845

Fine. We all went to church. Aleck read aloud in the evening. While he was out in the afternoon, crossing the ferry, he assisted in saving the lives of 4 boys whose boat sank. 

5th May 

Fine, cold.  We went out shopppng. We called fro Mrs Johnstone.  Mary Anne took Mrs Jeffreys & Miss Agnew for a drive in the carriage to Countesswells.

6th May/45

Wetish.  We made calls at the M'Phersons Mr & Mrs Hogarths and the Leslies Berry Babnk.  May has been preparing as she may go to London on Saturday. 

7th May 

Cold wind.  Margt and I called for Julia Young who arrived yesterday.  Will & Mary Anne called at Banchory House. May & I shopped.

8th May 

Gloomy. May & Julia Young had a walk. Teh Jeffreys & Miss Agnew called etc etc.  Will & I selected cashmeres for our tablecloth.

9th May 

Very wet.  Last night the cart came from Inchmarlo only a week sooner than the time.  We had to pack everything and they left at nine this morning.  We executed a number of commsisions in the midst of the rain!!

10th May

Fine.  Mamma & Papa called at Coutnesswells. Charlotte Lindsay asked us to be her bridesmaids on the 5th. This is a most unexpected honor!  Pat went to warthill. MA is not quite well.  Al dined at Captain More's.

Sunday 11th May 1845 

Fine. We went to church twice. Mrs Johnston Kincardine was in our Pew.  We liked Dr Forsythe's sermon but especially his pratyers today. They were beautiful indeed. Mrs Innes Raemoir & the Piries called between sermons.

12th May 45 

Fine but windy and dusty.  Will & I set out for Grandholm in a Minabus.  We walked back with Mary Lindsay. After luncehon we went to call for the Mansfields at Heathcot then we went down the street, so we had a good days work. John Ross just eturned from India called.

13th May 

Fine.  In a bustle!  Called for Jeanette Lumsden. At Seaton and at Denmore.  We stayed  a long time at both places.  We saw Bernard. We walked about a good deal at Denmore.

Wednesday 14th May 1845 

Fine. We packed up and left for Inchmarlo at half past 10 o'clock. Will and I went on the back of the carriage.  Maggie's  projected trip to Leamington is all up as Jephson has left for a month.

Inchmarlo May 15th/45

Lovely day.  We are getting on most comfortably with only Shepherd & Kemlo.  We are so sorry K is going away at the term. The Ramsays called already. We were out a good deal.  

16th May 

Fine. Willie & I arranged and put out all the ornaments in the drawing room. The double blossom cherry tree is not out yeat & is later than last year. The garden is looking very pretty. 

17th May/45

Fine  I forgot to say that Aleck arrved from Strathdon on Thursday evening and stayed the night. We had an announcement from little Mary of her marriage to Mr. Cumine.  Pat came to breakfast today.  H. Lumsden called.  The Murrays and Miss Turner came from cArlogie and lunched with us. We have delightful letters from dear Charlie now at Fettercairn. 

Sunday 18th May 45 

Showery.  May went to Church at Banchory and all of us except Mamma went to Kincardine. We were as usual much pleased with Mr Browne's excellent sermon. We brought Mrs Christie as far as Barrowstone as it rained.

19th May 

Cold.  Pat left in the morning. We had a nice quiet day. I wrote letters to Miss Townsend, Fanny Farquharson etc. Willie & I worked hard at clearing the edges of the grass from gravel and had some fun! 

20th May 1845 

Showery.  Our accounts from Fettercairn are not quite so well.  Will & I worked hard outdoors and we flatter ourselves our work shows. Papa & I had our usual little concert in the evening - violin, harp or piano.

21st May 

Fine.   Much better accounts of C today. We went and called at Banchory Lodge Feugh Cottage and Mavis Bank (The Skenes) and on the Murrays. Mrs Farquharson and Miss Pople called here.

22nd May/45

Beautiful day. Very satsifactory accounts today. Papa was obliged to go in to Aberdeen to see Lord James Hay.  May accommpanied him. We dined early and then payed a visit to Widdow Cooper poor body. After tea we went as far as the Bridge of Canny.  Poor Mary Williamson appears very ill. I practised on the harp a long time.  

23rd May 1845

Cloudy but fine.  I forgot tomention that the Campbells called yesterday. Capt Leith called also Col & Mrs Gordn.  May and Papa returned from Aberdeen in the evening bringing a load of things.  Mamma had her silk dress all greased from the up setting of a jar of mince collop!! 

24th May 

Gloomy.  May and Eliza Ramsay had a walk. Mag did not return till 4 o'clock. It was damp.

25th May

Aleck came to breakfast and went wit us to Church/. Mr. Milne preached.

26th May - term day 

No sun yet.  Papa & Mamma called at Feugh. Shepperd and Calder left us also poor Will and Jessie at the Lodge. 

27th May

No sun.  We were very busy. The whole of the new servants came in the car, Crichton driving them.

28th May

Fine no sun.  We went to Banchory Lodge Dee Bank Invery and Feugh to ask how young Mrs Gordon was. We were stopped going to Blackhall by seeing the Campbells at the gate. 

29th May 

Fine no sun yet. We called at Arbeadie.  Nothing particular happened. Crathes and Dr. Oggs.

30th May 

Fine, no sun. Papa Mamma and I went to Campfield and Glassel. We had a walk through the woods in the evening. I have got my neck so bitten.

Sunday, 1st June 1845 

Very fine day.  Papa, Mamma Wilhemina and I went to the church of Kincardine. Margaret walked to church at Banchory. We dine early on Sunday. Papa Will and I walked on the lawn in the evening. Will read aloud to us.

2nd June 

Fine. We are in want of rain. Will & I walked to the Cottage and returned by the river. We sat a long time. Mrs. Young Julia & Capt Young called.  J gave May a beautiful pen. After tea, we three and Papa sallied out to cross the river and walk about Blackhall.  May & I began to row but we were at cross purposes so she gave both oars up to me.  I got half accross but also went down the river till the boat stuck on a rock.  John Dower and Papa worked hard to get us pff and john Dower was just summoning up courage to jump in and haul us, when we got off and arrived safely at the other side, with our tails dripping dirty water. We enjoyed a beautiful walk up the river and Inchmarlo looks lovely from the hill.  John Dower had been practising while we were away so took us home in a most masterly style!!!

3rd June

Fine.  Papa made calls in and about Banchory.  Nothing particular happened. 

Wednesday, 4th June

Fine.  We started for Aberdeen at 9 o'clock and got there about quarter to 12 o'clock.  We went about and did all our business as we spend some days at Grandholm.  Mr Brown our clergyman at Kincardine took tea with us.  

5th June 

Wet.  It cleared about 2 o'clock.  We dressed and went to Alick Pirie's marriage at quarter to 3 o'clock. Charlotte looked uncommonly sweet and interesting.  After the ceremony the whole party went to luncheon and then dispersed, each had a piece of the beautiful bridescake.  We then had our dinner viz the Lindsay family Mr & Mrs Farquharson and Mr & Mrs Thos Hadden.  We undressed and put on our morning dress then went for a walk.  The evening passed very pleasantly. 

Friday, 6th June 1845 

Very boisterous.  We bridesmaids were busy cuttung up the cake and sending it off.  We went out in the midst of rain, crossed the Don and called at the Cottage. We only saw poor little Kate. Gordon Pirie spent the day at Grandholm.  Mamma and the rest went home and took wee Fanny with them.  

7th June 

Windy. Will & I left Grandholm and came to Aberdeen. I was packed off by the evening coach here and Will stayed with M.A,  What am I to do without Will? 

Sunday 8th June 1845 

Wet.  Old Provost James Hadden died at 10 o'clock.  Mamma and I with Fan went to church.  Fan got sick coming back.  Mag remained at Banchory both sermons at Mrs Farquharsons. 

9th June 

Fine afternoon.  I forgot to say Pat who came on Friday left today. I read prayers today without my specks, having lost the key of my dressing case.  We walked in the garden.

10th June 

Very fine, hot, damp.  The Ramsays came to luncheon.  We walked part of the way back with them. Mrs. Young called. We went to the Crow nest at night.  

11th June 

Very hot.  Fan and i had a long walk over the lawn. We went up to the top of the house after tea to enjoy the view and the lovely evening.  We had a nice walk.

12th June.

Not fine.  Papa Mamma and I went to Raemoir there is only Mr Innes there. We went through the new house. We called at Glassel to ask for Mrs. Leith.  Fan was ill the morning but was better at night.

13th June 

Dreadfully hot.  Mamma Papa & Margt dined at Col Gordon's they met Dr. & Mrs Roebrtson! and the James Forbes. Fanny & I went up the road and made some calls, on the cottagers!

14th June 

Fine. Papa went to Aberdeen to old Provost Haddens funeral. We took tea under a birch tree!!  Fan & I went down in the car and met Papa.  We saw the Ramsays and walked about with them.

Sunday 15th June

Showery. We went to church all except Mag.  Mr Brown did not preach as he is not quite well. Papa read a sermon and Margt read prayers.

16th June 

Cloudy. Fan & I had an early walk saw the cows milked.  Nothing particular happened.

17th June

Fine. We went to Kincardine Lodge and saw Mrs. Gordon. We could not get out in the afternoon for the rain.  

18th June 

Showery.  We went to the cottage in the midst of the rain.  Papa collected the rents and was busy from 10 till nearly 6 0'clock.  Mr. Day called.

19th June/45 

Fine.  Papa went to town in the morning. Mag Fanny and I called at the Ramsays and at Invery. We had an early dinner and then walked down to Mavis Bank to see the Skenes.  

20th June

Very fine. The Ramsays came at 12 o'clock and took lunch at our dinner then the Irvines from Drum stayed and walked about. The Campbells payed us a flying visit.  Lastly the Innes spent an our with us before going to Banchory Lodge!!!.  Margt & I had a lovely walk after tea.  

21st June 45 

Fine.  I had a turn before breakfast.  We dined early and went to Aberdeen at 3 o'clock.

Sunday 22nd June 1845

Showery.  Fanny's Birthday, 5 years old. We went twice to church and had a very excellent sermon from Dr. Forsythe. Pat read aloud at night. 

23rd June 

Cloudy.   We were very busy paying accounts etc etc.  Poor Mary Anne was not at all well.  We went ourselves to the Bank!!

24th June

Showery.  Both bad colds. We came home in the evening and brought Anne Pirie with us. Nothing particular happened. 

25th June/45 

Showery.  We walked out a good deal and gathered a number of roses in the garden. 

26th June 

Showery.  The boys old Tutor Dr Grieg came to breakfast and spent the day here.  We walked by the river to the Cottage.  

27th June

Fine.  Will & I called at Banchory Lodge and on the Ramsays.  The Campbells and Major Farquharson.  We made calls in the afternoon on the East Mains Cottagers.  

28th June 

Wet all day.  During the night there was most frightful noise made by the heavy rain and thunder.  Will and I at 2 in the morning went round to the West Wing in case A.P. was afraid.  We were busy braiding our squares for the tablecloth all day. This is the anniversary of Papa & Mamma's marriage-day.  

Sunday 29th June 1845

Fine. We all went to Church. Aleck rode out of town. The housemaid thought he was a stranger. We walked to the Cottage.  Aleck read aloud at night.

30th June 

Shower.  There was a woman on stilts and two men dressed so oddly came here. The woman danced!   What a way of making ones bread.  We went with vituals to the Widdow at night.  Al left in the morning.  

July 1845

1st July 

Wet.  Papa went down to the Church to a meeting. Nothing particular happened. We were very stupid just now,.  The weather is depressing.  Mamma has not been well.

2nd July 

Fine.  We had a few strawberries and green peas today. We had a lovely walk to the Glen. Papa rode to Dalhaikie. 

3rd July 

Wet wet.  I read Rokeby and Will wrote letters.  We are very stupid.  There was such a mist at night we could not see Blackhall or the Hills. 

4th July

Fine, windy.  Papa & Mamma crossed in the carriage to Fettercairn by Stonehaven.  We took a very long walk all round  the glen.  They gave, on their return from Fettercairn a very good account of Charlie.

5th July 1845

Fine.  We gathered some excellent flowers. Aleck came out here.  Mary Anne had a darling little girl this morning at 5 o'clock.  She is doing well. I had a nice walk with Al in the garden smoking about half past 10 o'clock but I was much the worse and got a pain in my chest.  

Sunday 6th July 1845 

Fine.  We all went to church and heard a Mr. Smith. There were a good many of the people in churcch, Innes etc.  Mamma and Will called at Feugh Cottage. Nothing particular happened. 

7th July 2003

Fine. I suffered much from pain in my chest and had leeches put on Mamma and Will called at Feugh Cottage. Nothing particular happened.  

Tuesday 8th July 

Fine. There was a fearful storm of thunder & lightening. It was right over our heads and a tree at the back of the larder was smashed to atoms. It was very fearful. The Forbes, H & M, came from Glassel. We all took refuge in Mamma's bed during the storm.  Miss Morrice & Kinloch lunched here.

9th July/45

Showery.  The Doctor came to see me . Mamma & Papa went into town and took A P with them. She was distressed at leaving us. We had fun at night.

10th July 

Showery.  The Forbes & Will called at Banchory Lodge. Mamma Papa & May came back and brought Jane Anne with them. Papa Mag & Mary went to dinner at Glassel to meet the Leith Hays.   

Friday 11th July 

Fine. I went out today. There have been a  number of people to see the tree. Mrs. Mitchell & Mrs Leith called.  Papa May & mary Dined at Feugh Cottage.

12th July

 Showrey.  I was very ill indeed today,  rheumatism, stitches, etc,  etc.  Aleck came out to dinner. I read Anne of Grierstein

Fine till evening. They all went to church. I was very weak but the pain was gone in my chest.

Showery.  Papa Mag and Will went to Murtle to meet the Drum family.  I went down to tea. Al Mary & Harriet walked to Banchory at night. 

15th July/45

Fine.  Papa Mag and Will returned from Murtle and brought the Thurburns, they all called at Drum.  They walked to Cairnton to see the Burnetts and ask them to dine here on Friday. We had dancing in the evening and a good deal of music.

Fine.  Nothing particular happened.  They walked about at the grounds. May & Papa dined at Blackhall. Willie & Harry Forbes went to tea in the evening.

18th July 45

Fine but cold.  Papa & Mr. Thurburn went to Dr Morrison's funeral. Papa came back to dinner and we lead a party viz the Youngs and Mr Carlyon and the Burnetts.  Al came and drove Gordon Forbes out here. The Thurburns left after luncheon. Mary Lindsay came to spend some time with us. We were arranging flowers the whole day. I am rather weak still.

19th July 

Very fine. A large party went up to Aboyne and had strawberries etc and a great deal of fun.  Papa Mamma & Mag dined at Crathes. the Innes called and looked at the "stricken tree".  The Aboyne party did not return till about 6 o'clock.

Sunday 20th July 1845

Fine no sun. Mamma Will & Harry Forbes went to church./ It was sacrament Sunday.  They said that Mr. Brown was very impressive and they never saw such an attentive congregation.  Dr. Thom called to see me. Al read aloud at night. 

Monday 21st July 1845

No sun .  Aleck left in the morning.  Mary Lindsays Uncle John died on Saturday.  Nothing particular happened. Stupid.

Tuesday 22nd July

No sun.  Mamma, Papa & Will left at 8 o'clock for Aberdeen to be present at the baby's christening. We had a great deal f fun.  We startled some of party by putting things in their beds!  The whole of them went to Raemoir but me. 

23rd July

No sun.  I am quite well now.  Papa Mamma & Will came back from Aberdeen and brought beautiful christening cake.  Bay's name is Katherine Helen.  Papa went to dinner at Cairnton.  The Forbes called at Blackhall.  We afterwards took a lovely walk to Woodhall.

Thursday 24th

No sun yet.  The Forbes & Mag dined at the Skenes.  Mr Innes dined here.  My pony Effy deans came down and threw Crichton and cut its knees.  We frightened Mary Forbes by causing a commotion moving the bed curtains after she was in bed. 

Friday 25th July 45

Fine.  We had a walk to Glen Canny.  The Forbes lunched at Glassel. Nothing particular happened.

Saturday, 26th July

Fine. We sat in the crooked birth tree reading then went to the rocks.  We had a great deal of fun. Pat came ought and brought a Mr Gibb engineer whi was looking at the line for a railway!!!

Sunday, 27th July 1845

Fine. We young people all went to Church. We dined early and had an evening walk to the Cottage.  There hav been a number of people looking at the tree.

Monday  28th

Fine.  The Forbes went in the morning by the Banchory coach but Harry could not get a seat so returned.  There were that day 26 people disappointed of seats. We had a very nice little picnic to the Glen.  Mary Lindsay got in to the burn.  The Campbells called.  Pat breakfasted at Raemoir, lunched at Mr Days.  The Skenes and Mr. Weber dined here.

29th July

Finish.  We worked hard in the Garden gathering withered roses.  The Ramseys called.  We then went to Kincardine in the Car. We were nearly drowned with rain returning though Miss Morrice gave us cloaks, etc.

30th July

Fine.  Mag left to go to Julia's marriage and took Harriet Forbes.  Jane Anne and Duenna Campbell with her. Nothing particular happened.

31st July

Showery. Julia Young's wedding day.  Mrs Noble Morrice, Miss Mary Young came her and spent the day.  We were all very busy in the evening working.  Mrs Col. Gordon called.

August 1845

Friday 1st August 1845

We had a nice walk . Capt Farquhar unexpected came to dinner on his way to Carlogie.  Maggie returned & gave us all the news of the marriage.

2nd August

Fine. e went the half way to Cairnton and at Invercanny we met a most interesting blind boy.  We were very

late for dinner!!

Fine. We went to church.  We dined early . Will read aloud in the evening.  Mary Lindsay & I sat in the small drawing  talking.

4th August

Very fine.  We walked to Banchory and met there Mamma in the carriage. We then went to Feugh and Invery to call.  Mr Innes & Mr Thos Innes & Mr Abercrombie called and walked about.

5th August.

Little Dunny died.  Fine but cloudy.  Mr Innes , Mr Thos & Mr Abercrombie & Capt Leith dined here.  We danced in the evening and had great fun.

6th August

Very fine.  Papa, M L and I went to call on Mr Day & Mrs Young .  We then joined the grand turn out of beauty & fashion  at the flower show.  We had some good prizes. The whole country side from drum to Kincardine were there.  Papa & Mamma dined and we went in the evening to the Skenes.  We were a large and pleasant party. Margt Pirie came by the evening coach.

7th August 1845

Fine.  Papa went to  Kincardine and we had a long walk. Mary Lindsay left us in the morning. Nothing particular happened.

8th August

Fine.  We had the old Miss Forbes Capt and the two little Skenes to luncheon.  Papa went to the Cattle Show at Kincardine. He returned to tea and brought young Mr Irvine Drum with him.

9th August

Wetish. Papa, Maggie myself, Mr Irvine  & Margt Pirie set off for Aberdeen at 9 o'clock. Mr I went up to drum. We went out about our commissions.  Harry Forbes took tea with us and Mag at the M'Grigors.

Sunday 10th August/45

Pouring, but cleared after tea.  We went twice to Church. We had letters from India.  All well.

11th August

Poured all day.  Could not go out.  Left town at 4 o'clock and arrived to tea here at 7 o'clock. 

12th August

Damp, cold.  Worked a long time in the garden.  Papa and Maggie dined at Raemoir and met the Haddns.

13th August

Fine.  We spent the day at Learny  The party fromRaemoir were there.  The Gordons Parkhill & the Thos Innes are living there. We came in the evening by kincardine to bring Mrs M Morrice home to spend a day with us.

14th August

Showery.  The Haddens came to luncheon. They were only abel to take a short turn on acocunt of the rain. We had an early dinner and had a nice quiet evening.

15th August

Showery.  Mamma &      went to Blackhall etc!!  Mr Rose Innes called.  We went and called for the Widdow.  Duncan Pirie came by the evening coach to see us as he leaves for London by steamer tomorrow.

16th August

Cloudy.  Miss Morrice & D.P> left by the morning coach.  Papa & I dined at Col Gordon's  Dr. Mackey and Mr. Taylor, son of Lady Jane Taylor.

Sunday, 17th August 1845

Fine. We went to Church as usual there were a number of carriages and people there.  Papa Will & I had a nice walk by Woodhead.  Papa in the evening read a most beautiful sermon on the necessity of prayer by Douglas.

18th August

Rain.  Mr Ross and a Mr Murray came to breakfast.  We ventured out and were caught in the rain.  Col. & Mrs Gordon and party and the Campbells dined with us.

19th August/45

Cloudy.   There was a show at Kincardine - Mr Ross & his friend left and other two friends came.  There was a great turn out of people at the flower show. We did not go up to the Lodge.

20th August

Poured from morning till night.  Worked, read, practised eat and drank!!  A man came and tuned the piano.  Aleck came in the evening from Corsindae. The gents played whyste.

21st August

A nice wind and fine day the ground drying very fast. Aleck left early and the other gents left per mail.

22nd August

Drizling rain.  Dr Mackie & Mr Taylor called. We played the piano and harp a great deal today.  Nothing particular.

23rd August

Fine. Mag & I lunched at Feugh.  Mamma & Will called at Raemoir.  Mrs Farquarsho & Miss Pole called and Capt Skene.  Papa & Mag dined at Blackhall.

Sunday 24th August/45

Showery. We went to church came home , read, dined early as usual. Papa read one of Mills'  (Trails'?) sermons to us. We had a turn in the Garden.

25 August/45

Showey. We went after breakfast with Papa to superintend some farm improvements. We two walked to Mvis Bank after luncheon.  James arrived from London and brought his friend Mr Fenwicke with him.  Aleck also came here.

26th August 45

Pouring. We braved the wet day and set out for Learny. The skenes went with us After the luncheon we went out to shoot with bow & arrow. There was a large party. I shot next to the best  among the ladies.  The Skenes on returning here  remained for a heavy tea. It was a little stupid at Learny

27th August

Cloudy.  The gents went fishing. We paid visits to some poor bodies.  Papa Mag and I dined at Arbeadie. We danced the polka etc when we came home at night.

28th August

At long last a beautiful hot day. The young  gents left for Aberdeen to attend the  Cattle Show at 100 o'clock. They returned to a late dinner. We went to a long walk at Dalhakie. It was too hot.

29th August

Fine, Hot !!  We breakfasted early and the gets set off for Braemar at nine o'clock.  Mrs Kinloch of Park called. I was busy learning new music.

30th August 1845

Fine Hot.  Papa, Mama and I went to Kincardine and made some calls and then to lunch at the lodge.  The gentlemen returned about 5 o'clock.  Aleck set out for Aberdeen at half past 5. At 8 o'clock Miss Forbes & Mr James Forbes arrived most unexpectedly from London. We were so glad to see them.  At 7 0'clock Mary Anne and Pat came!!!

Sunday 31st August/45

Fine.  We went  to church all except the Forbes & Mary Anne. The Innes came home this evening with their party -  Maacmroyston (?) , the Burn and Mr & Mrs Gorton. They stayed luncheon.  We all went for a walk to the Cottge in the afternoon.  Pat read a sermon in the evening.

September 1845

Monday 1st September 1845

Fine.  Mag I and the Forbes went to drum. The gents went to shoot.  Poor Mr Fenwick steppoing off a stone down into the laney and bruised his knee.  The George Forbes arrived from Edinglassie to dinner. We had music and danced a reel.

2nd Sep

Fine. We set off for Skolty at 12 o'clock. We took the ponies off of the carr and rode up.  The wind was very high on the top of the tower.  We succeeded in finding a nice sheltered place for luncheon. we were extremely merry.  Drank out of the salt cellar and out of a bottle!! In the evening we acted charades and were very much amused.  Mr James Forbes & Jim danced ballet fashion most effectively!!

3rd Sept

Fine, cool.  Mary Anne and Jane Annie left per mail. We had a railway deputation at breakfast. After a nice walk we had a drive.  Dr & Miss Moir came today. The young gents were busy arranging dresses for some tableaux vivants in the evening.  Will was Hermione and Jim Leontes.  I murdered Miss James Forbes with a carving knife as Gichaire.  Hermione looked so beautiful.  We had also a scene from the Merchant of Venice. We acted the word Pa-tri-mony . Mr F was Creative.

4th Sept/45

Cloudy. All the Forbes preparing to leave when Miss F. asked me to go with the which I was only too happy to do.  I got ready in a moment.  The George Forbes left at 12 o'clock.  Jim & Mr Fenwick followed us to Strathdon.  We arrived at 7 o'clock at Edinglassie and bustled about to get everything comfortable, in which we succeeded admirably by the time of the gents arrival. We had a most delightful merry evenint.  I could not sleep all night!!

5th Septbr

Fine.  Little Mary's wedding day. We went to call at Invernan and at the Manse. The gents went shooting and had excellent sport.  We had Jock M'Grigor to dance to us in his kilt in the evening.  We all dined  and learned several new reel steps. At Inchmarlo the Moirs left. Mr Henry Culdy (?)  went to breakfast and left again in the evening.

6th Sept

Lovely day.  The gents again went out shooting.  The Calls  called at Edinglassie  We went down to Newe and looked all over the house.  Miss F struck her head violently  on a part of the staircase.  It frightened me so much. We dined about half past 8 o'clock.

Sunday 7th August (sic

Fine.  I am sorry to say we were obliged to leave as Mr Fenwick had to be inEngland the middle of next week.   We had a pleasant drive home. After dinner I am sorry that Mr Fenwick left us as he is such a very nice person, but he is coming back next year perhaps.  Jimmy read a sermon aloud  in the evening.  All here went to  hurch.

8th Sept 1845

Cloudy.  Papa Mamma & Jim and Williamina went to drum.  They had a very pleasant party.  It rained very much at night.

9th Sept

Fine. Mr & Mrs Ferguson called.  Jim called at Cairnton and on the Ramsays. We played along time at Quoites.  Notihing particular happened.

10th Sept 45

Very fine. The Ramseys called .  Dr Ogg came in the afternoon and remained dinner which was early as Jim Will & I had to be in Aberdeen about tea time. We gathered lovely flowers to take with us.  Kate & Tom Leslie are with us just now. 

11th Sept-45

Very fine. We all went down to see the Races. OUr Carriage stood close to the winning post.  A number of gentlemen lunched at our carriage. The races were very exciting, a pretty sight.  We had a very nice party in the evening.  We danced a great deal.

12th Sept/45

Fine

We went down again to see the races.  Mary Lindsay came to our carriage. We had even a larger party than yesterday at the carrigage pic-nic.  We had a great deal of amusement.  Iwas much pleased with the races. In the evening we all went to the Ball.  It was a very pleasant one indeed and the music was very fine.  The band of the 87th played. 

13th Sept

Fine. Went out shopping and called on Annie M'Grigor.  Will & I came home alone in the carriage as Jim  stayled to see the Hurdle race.  He came however in time for dinner as we had the Sherrif  Burnetts Crathes at dinner.

Sunday 14th Sept

Showery. We went to church. Miss Turner said she and Col. Irvine were coming to see us but as we were all to leave home we put them off.   James read a beautiful sermon (one of Newmans) to us .  We retired soon as we had to be up early next day.

15th Sept

Very fine.  Jim, Will & I started for strathdon at 6 o'clock. We breakfasted at Aboyne and after a very pleasnat drive over Morven arrived at Edingallsie about 12 o'clock.  Aleck came from Aberdeen about an hour after  and we all went down to see the Lonach games.  There were a number of well dressed highlanders.  The Dancing and running was the most amusing for ladies but it was alltogether a pretty sight.  It was merciful no-one was killed by the accidental throwing of the hammer amongst a crowd of people.  We returned to dinner about 7 o'clock.  Mr James Forbes wore his splendid highland dress of the 45.  Jim and Al alone went to the Ball.

16th Sept er

Fine.  We all went to Inverernan and were joined in our walk through the wood of Dalhandy) by Kate & Harriet Forbes.  Jimmy had very bad sport today and would have enjoyed it better if Mr Fenwick  had been here to accompany him again. We had Jock & Williamina Grigor to dance to us and old Peter to play. They both dance beautifully.

17th Sept er

Wet. All our party except myself went to Inchrory and wre delighted with the scenery about the Avon.  Mary & Christina Forbes & Capt Call also went. They had been in Lord Hewnry Benticks cottage. I spent a very long day at inverrnan All the Inchrory party came to Inverernan to a heavy tea after which we danced and acted charades and got back to Edinglassie about 12 o'clock!!!

18th Sept

Wet. We were prevailed on to stay another day but as Jim was obliged to go .  He took Alecks horse and put it in the elegant old Dog cart.  We had a walk  in the rain round the hill of Knoclay.

19th Sept er

Showery.  We left our kind friends at Edinglassie about 12 o'clock and after having a cold but merry and ejoyable drive (I suppose because we drank so much wine) arriveed safe at home in to dress for dinner as Miss Jessie Chalmers and Mr Hervy Auld were here.  I sang and played and Mr Auld sang!!!

20th Sept er

Cloudy.  We had an Italian played an organ to see us.  Mr A.... left lunch.  Mary Anne Pat and their eldest and youngest daughter arrived also Jessie Russell who has been a servant in the family for more than 10 yers now. Will M'Grigor came with a horse to take back the Dog cart to Edinglassie. He put on his kilt and danced to us in the evening.  I forgot to say that last Tuesday. Mamma Papa & May were at Annie M'Gregors marriage.

Sunday 21st Sept 1845

Showery.  Mag & Miss Chalmers went to the free Church at Banchory in the car and walked home and all the rest of us went to Kincardine as usual. Al went to lunch at the Lodge and had to walk home in the rain.  Pat went to call at Mavis Bank and remained to dinner.  Al read aloud.

22nd Sept er

Still wet.  Dreadful weather for the country.  Pat & Aleck went to town in the morning.  Jim is at present paying some visits in the Garrioch.  Miss Jessie Chalmers left by the coach.

23rd Sept er  45

Fine.   Papa Mamma & I went first to Kincardine where we left Papa with Sir Thos in the Courtroom it being Mr Scott's trial.  We then went to call for Mrs Cochrane at Balfour. The Burnetts from cairnton walked over here. The Ramsays & Mr. Day called.

24th Septer

Fine.  Papa went to Finzean to call on Coll M'Intosh.  Mrs Gordon called here.  Thje celebrated Dr Wilson (Duncan'#s friend) kindly called to see us.  Uncle & Aunt Aleck Pirie and his wife and William came to spend a day or tw here. Jim came from Newton.

25th Septer

Turned out fine about 1 o'clock.  Mary Anne Will & I called at Invery and saw the Gardes.  We then joined the other party who had gone to Raemoir.  Miss Murray and her brother dined here and Aleck came out.

26th Sept

Dear Jim left us to return to London.  The Piriies left and we all went to luncheon at Carlogie.  we each had a sail the air boat and found it most agreeable.

27th Septer

Fine in the afternoon.   We received the sad accounts of the death of dear Duncan's little boy after a short severe illness.  Poor Kate & Duncan are wonderfully resigned and supported.  I hope and pray they may have cause to rejoice and may they be comforted.  We put off a large dinner party and Kate, Tom Leslie and the rest of the dear children came here today.  

 

28th Septer

Fine.  Kate & Tom Leslie Pat & Will and I went to church.  Mr Brown's sermon was beautiful on attending public worship.  We had a walk in the afternoon.  Pat read aloud at night.  Let us pray for poor duncan & Kate.

29th Septer

Fine.  M A, Kate & Pat went to call at Balnacraig.  We had Mrs Brown, Miss Turner Inverey and Mrs Morrice at luncheon.  Tom Leslie went to the Bog Loch and shot wild duck.

30th Sept

Fine.  All went and called at Invery, Feugh and Banchory Lodge except Mamma and I.  Pat left by coach and Tom went to Clova.  Mr Auldyo came  to luncheon. Mrs Murray & Capt Farquhar called but we persuaded them to remain to dinner.  we had music to a considerable amount at night.

 

OCTOBER 1845

Wednesday 1st October 1845

Fine.  C's birthday.  MA and the children Kate Leslie and I went to the flower show  at Banchory. We had the first prize for plums.  The Carlogie party called and returned my shawl. We had a nice walk.

2nd Oct

Lovely day.  Kate Leslie left for Aberdeen on her way home. Will and I had a most enjoyable walk through the harvest fields. They are only leading the crops in now. It is such a late sason.

3rd Oct

Pouring rain.  How sad for the country & crops. I taught the children to dance the polka. May read alooud. We were busy putting away all our coloured dresses.

4th Oct

It did not rain in the afternoon.  Jane Ramsay came to luncheon and we walked home with her.  We also went to the garden.  Nothing worth writing down happened.

Sunday 5th October 1845

Fine.  We all went to church as usual. We dined early and MA Will and I had a very nice walk after.  Will read aloud to us in the evening.

6th Oct 1845

Fine.  We breakfasted early and Papa Mary Anne Margt JA and baby left at 9 o'clock for Aberdeen.  There was a scene with Fanny.  We took the children for a picnic to the hill behind the farm.  Miss Margaret Burnett called and we walked half way home with her. We went to see Mrs Henderson poor body.  We had a very sad letter from Kate.

Tuesday 7th Oct

Very wet.  We read, worked, played and amused ourselves as people generally do non a wet day.

8th Octer

It cleared at 12 o'clock.    Will & I walked to Banchory for a little exercise.  Papa came out of town in the evening.  Nothing particular happened.  We wrote invitations. 

9th Oct

Fine in the afternoon.  Papa went to poor law meeting.  Will & I went to Feugh Cottage and stayed luncheon.  We walked home. The roads were shocking.  Capt Gordon called. We went to Raemoir to dinner. Sir M & Lady Bruce and the Arbuthnotts are there we had a pleasant enough party.

10th Oct

Damp wet day!   Papa went to another meeting at Kincardine. We went to Aberdeen in the evening.

11th Oct

Very wet. We went to Church. Mr Bowers preached. In the afternon we settled about a carpet.

Sunday 12th October 1845

Very fine.  Sacrament Sunday. We went at half past 9 o'clock and remained till one.  We went to the first table .  we returrned for an hourat 3 o'clock and we went agin at 6 in the evening.

13th Oct

We went to church and had a beautiful and appropriate sermon from Dr Gillan. After church we executed our commissions and after an early dinner came home to Inchmarlo in the midst of the rain.

14th Oct

Lovely day.  We had a long walk.  Saw the artist of Bogam's drawing s.  Mrs Innes & Miss Farqhuarson Haughton called.  Their carriage dog eat up all the sweet breads and a quantity of butter.

15th Oct

Very fine.  We have had refusals from 21 people for the 15th and 16th.  Capt Gordon Al & Mr Holland came here.  We had also the Burnetts and Smiths & Miss Pople to dinner.  Emma Forbes and her friend Miss Brem (?) walked up from Banchory. They stayed toluncehon.

16th Oct

Very fine  Mr Holland left us by the Mail.  Al and Capt Gordon called at Carlogie.  Mr & Mrs Skene and Col & Mrs Gordon.  we had a decidedly stupid evening although we danced, etc.

17th Oct 45

Showry.  The gents called and lunched at Glassel and then at Raemoir.  Will & I walked most determinedly.  The Miss Ramsays and Captain Farquhar dined.  We had really a very merry evening - a Bear Polka

18th Oct

Very windy but fine. Aleck left before luncheon and Capt Gordon after for Castle Fraser.  Mamma Will and I called at Feugh  and had sewing.  We walked home. We have had quite enough of Capt G although he is pleasant enough.

19th Oct

Wet. Dreadful for the crops. We went to Church and had a very good sermon.  We all read to ourselves the whole evening.  I read a beautiful essay on prayer by John Knox.

20th Oct

Stormy wind.  Papa Will and I had a regular constitutional. The stacks are nearly blown over.  Poor Bounce was blown across the green in his couch and was no doubt astonished at the revolving motion!  Several fine larches are laid low.

21st Oct

Very fine.  Papa Mamma & Mag went to Learney but missed Miss Brebener Capt Christy made a farewll call as he leaves tomorrow.    Will & I caled on several cottagers at the East Mains.  I taught Mrs Beg to knit a fancy pattern. Finished reading Mrs Trollope's "One Fault" a book which disappointed me from its stupid conclusion.

22nd Oct

Very fine!  We all except Mag went toMill of Kincardine and then waited in the village.  Papa was listening to Mr Scott's trial before the Presbetery.  We called on Mrs Brown & we lunched on biscuits from the Kincardine bakery.  Mr Harry Lumsden, Mr Skene & Mr Hunter talked to us a long time.  We had also an amusing argument with the School master on Mr Scott's merits and demerits.

23rd Oct

Very fine.  We were busy all the morning measuring the growth of handsome trees and making small ones for destruction.  We all drove up to Dalhaikie and made some calls.   On our return we saw people surveying the lawn, etc,  for  the railway.  How odious it will be to have it whisking past our very door!

24th Oct

Very fine indeed.  We, viz Mamma & I called at Raemoir.  Poor Mrs Innes not very well.  Will & Mag made sundry unimportant visits about Banchory. e hear poor Mrs Harry Lumsden is very ill.

25th Oct

Extremely fine.  Mamma not very well.  We three walked to Banchory and met Capt Farquhar and Mr Saville on their way to call on us.  They turned and walked back to Banchory where we treated them to 'inge breed'!!

Sunday, 26th October 1845

Cold, cloudy . We all went to church. Will & I had a short walk after dinner to warm us.  We read a nice book that Mrs Brown lent to us. 'Elisha'.

27th Oct

Very fine.  Aleck came out per mail and told us all about poor Charlie.  We started at 12 with him in the carriage for Aberdeen on our way to Warthill.  We shopped etc etc in the afternoon.  In the evening the Hon'able  Capt & Mr Drummond sons of Lord Strathallan came.  They seem pleasant and agreable.

28th Oct

Doubtful in the morning but fine on the whole.  The Drummonds and Pat started at 6 o'#clock to be in time for a fox hunt. We followed in the carriage with MA and Jane Annie and arrived at Warthill about 3 o'clock the carriage & horses went home in the evening.  Capt Gordon is at Warthill.  We make a very nice merry party.

29th Oct /45

Fine.  I forgot to say that Pat strained his leg riding yesterday.  Capt Gordon left after lunch.  The other gents went to shoot at Shelagreen. Capt Dalrymple dined at Warthill.  I sang a great deal.  Capt Drummond sang 'ame you by Athol' and 'Pibroch of Donald Dhu' most beautifully. Accompanied by me!!! I don't mean that.   He and his brother are extremely nice people. 

30th Oct

Very fine.

After lunch Kate Will & I called at Pitcaple where Mrs Lumsden was particularly kind.  We were determined to get an invitation there for Saturday and succeeded!!  We called at Glack for the purpose of seeing the laird thereof but were disappointed and only caught his sister in an exquisite state of deshabille.  Mr Chas Dalrymple (who is a very nice creature) dined with us.  He sang 'Baldy Fraser'.  I befooled myself most distinctly by singing nursery rhymes to the most lovely Opera Airs.  Pat left for Aberdeen.

31st Oct

Fine.  We spent a stupid morning and after lunch the Drummonds left for Westhill.  Miss Dalrymple and her brother called and took us all for a drive.  we walked home . Mr Henry Lumsden dined.  Tom Leslie & he went off to Pitcaple about 9 o'clock that their horses might be fresh for the hunt tomorrow. 

 

NOVEMBER

Saturday, 1st November 1845

Fine. We set off at 10 for Pitcaple and on receiving an addition to our number went to the meeting place.  There were 12 gents and they set about it very well but alas Reynard found it much too troublesome work for him and after drawing every cover within five miles they gave him up as a bad job.  Geordie Brown with 10 bodies on his carriage conducted himself in a most spirited manner following the hunters as far as he could poor man.  The carriage only holds 6 at most.  We returned to lunch and brought 5  Urquharts in addition to our party. One of these fell into extacies with Mr Harry Lumsdens picture.  we dined and then danced and played games till it was time to go home.  We spent a very happy and amusing day. 

Sunday 2nd November 1845

Drizling day.  We went to Chapell.  We read in the afternoon.  Thom and I had a very interesting conversation.  We had prayers and bid good bye as we leave in the morning. 

3rd November

Fine. We breakfasted at ½ past 6 o'clock  bid Mr & Mrs Leslie good bye in bed.  They looked like the babes in the wood and Thom in a most affectedly sleepy condition at the front door. We got safe to town and rebreakfasted.  Pat arrived from Inchmarlo.  Harriet Forbes came to tea.

4th November

Fine. Capt Gordon came to call about 11 o'clock and remained till 4.  Papa came from Inchmarlo. Will & I did no  end of business .  We concoted a prune jelly  for the party tomorrow!!.  We called on Mrs P. Pirie

5th November

Fine.  More and more commissions to execute.  We got everythin done satisfacotrily.  The drummonds and Tom came from Castle Fraser and we had the Hays and Miss Chalmers to meet the,m.  Our part went on remarkably well but Capt G - too noisy.  Tom forgot his dress clothes and cut a funny figure in Pt's   We received India letters all fine. 

6th November

Fine. We started homebound at 10 o'clock.  The Drummonds left per early coach.  I am glad we have met and got aquainted with such very nice people as they are.  Papa is highly delighted with Captain D.  On coming home we were told all about Papa & Mamma & Mag's very pleasant visit at Haughton last week.

7th Nov

Fine.  I began to read the 'Cothin' aloud it is travels most amusingly told.  Papa Will & I called at Blackhall.  We had a walk afterwards.

8th Nov

Lowering.  Too gloomy to go out.  I was uncommonly stupid.  Mrs Campbell and Capt Miller (enough to put Capts out of fashion) called and accepted an invite for Wednesday.  Capt M is like one of Punch's caricatures (e.g. Julien)

Sunday 9th November

Cloudy damp.  We all went to Church.  I like Mr B more and more as preacher. We read to ourselves and aloud as usual.

10th Nover

Cloudy wretched.  MA came to breakfast.  I am housekeeper just now so have been trotting about the whole day and looking after jellies Blancmanges, Prunes,  cakes and all manner of goodies.  An odious occupation. 

11th Nover  45

Fine.  Will and I had a pleasant walk. The Irvines, Drum, Col M'Intosh, Capt Gordon all came today. We had Mrs Young,  Mr James and Capt W Ramsay to meet them at dinner.  The Irvines sang exquisitely. We danced. Will and I went to the Irvines room and had a nightcap gossip.  It was near one when we left them. 

12th Nover

Very fine.  We had a walk after breakfast as the Irvines left at 12 o'clock.  Also Col M'Intosh Mrs Skene and 3 sons came to call but stayed luncheon.  we sent for a drive.  Capt Gordon treated us to 'sweeties'. The whole party at Blackhall came to dinner.  Capt.  Miller sang to us.  Al went to town in the morning but came back to dinner. 

13th  Nover

Fine.  Mr Innes came to breakfast and then took Papa to Kincardine. Capt Gordon left us.  Nothing particular happened, etc.

14th  Nover

Fine.  Mary Anne and the dear children left in the carriage and I accompanid her to get Kate's dresses to go to India.  I had an invite while at dinner to accompany Aleck to the Rosses.  I made myself as neat as I could in my mouling dress and Aleck made me go,.  As Mr Robertson Foveran was there we danced the Polka to perfection!  We really had a merry evening.

15th Nov 45

Fine.   I saw Henry Lumsden Pitcaple before leaving. I had time to see Mary Lindsay and congratulate her on having a nephew.  I came home alone in the carriage.  Met Mr Burnett at Drum.  Papa, Will & I dined at Mavis Bank to meet Mr Lumsden Balmedie as he is looking out for another wife !!! so we have had a chance.

Sunday 16th  Nover  a845

Rained the whole day.  Marg Will and I went to church. We liked Mr Brown's sermon so much. Thje text was 'Repent ye, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'  The Church was much crowded.

17th  Nover

Wet.  Will & I were busy arranging rooms and burning letters. We have kept a box full of our school and other letters.  The house is being 'done up' for the Winter.

18th November

Fine.  Papa wet to Aberdeen and we sent a cargo of boxes with him.  Read Esther (?)

19th November

Fine.  We  went to call on Mrs Young and then on  Mrs Gordon  Papa came home in the afternoon.  Nothing particular happened.

20th Nov

Fine.  We 3 went to Raemoir after lunch.  Mrs Innes recovering slowly.  Mrs Hadden was there and the Gordons Kincardine called. We took a walk in the garden to see the greenhouses. Willie's birthday.

21st  Nover

Fine cold.  Mamma and I went to lunch at Crathes .  While Mamma and Lady Burnett were talking, the Ramsays and I had a very amusing gossip.  I was congratulate don my marriage to Capt Gordon Fyvie!  We brought Eliza as far as Banchory and called at Arbeadie. Then we went to see the people at East Mains.  

22nd Nover

Fine.  Mamma & Mag  went to Blackhall and we went to Invery. We saw Georgie Lumsden the first time for years. Mrs Morrice still very ill. We then called at Mavis Bank.  William Murry left and William Walker our old gardener came back to his old quarters. 

Sunday 23rd November 1845

Fine. We all went to Church. Mr Brown finished the beautiful sermon begun last Sunday. It was the last tiem we shall hear him this season if ever.  For we may never see another.

24th Nov

Very frosty and a little snow.  We had  removed to the little drawing room some days.  Will and I walked to Banchory.  I fell on the ice.  we were very  much frightened by two men. We employed ourselves in the evening with household work interspersed with music.

25th Nov

Fine a thaw.  Papa Mma & May went to Park. The Ramsays sent their brother (a raw midshipman) lunched with us.  Will and I were "racketing about"  We hemed and marked a large quantity of Dusters!

26th Nov

Fine.  Packing going on everywhere  the house is in a stir!  Mamma and I contrived to go to Raem9ir to see the Innes again.  Mrs Innes not so well. We took Miss Pople home in the carriage and then Will adn I were sent on a mission with things for all the poor bodies.  It was dark before we accomplished our errand.  All ready to start for town.

Aberdeen 27th November 1845

Lovely day.  we with very bad grace got into the carriage at 2 o'clock and cramed in an approved fashion arrived in Aberdeen for the winter!!! We were in a bustle all the evening unpacking.  We succeeded in making ourselves comfy y 10 o'clock.

28th Nover

Fine.   I worked hard to get the small drawing room into usable condition with an old carpet.  Mama & Papa went to call for the Miss Glennies.  Aleck and Patrick dined at the Barracks. 

29th Nov

Fine  I wrote India letters.  Will and I went out to look for tartan dresses for ourselves.  We saw Capt G looking ill but we did not ask him to dinner.

Sunday 30th November 1945

Fine frosty. We all went to Church.  I liked Dr Forsythe's text in the afternoon.  He does not seem so formal.  It was a beautiful lecture from Rom VIII.  Will and I read and talked (I hope with much benefit to ourselves) in our own room. 

December

Monday 1st December 1845

Very cold but fine.  We went out with Harriet Forbes, who came to tea and we all went to Koenig's Concert. We really were much pleased with the operatic music which was much better than most Grand Concerts.

2nd Decer

Fine and Frosty.  We went out with Mamma shopping. Lady James Hay & Madame Gudin called.  Mamma called at Mrs Hadden Old Aberdeen, .  Seaton and Westfield.  Nothing particular. 

3rd Decer

Fine, frosty.    Mag and I walked to Westfield to see the Miss Chalmers.  We tried over new music.

4th Decer

Cold fine.  Capt Gordon came to luncheon and  after to dinner.  Mr Baillie and Mr Adams two Officers came also to dinner.  We had a stupid evening.  Mr Baillie is such a ridiculous creature. 

5th  Decer

Fine.   Capt Gordon left at last, for the South.  Mamma Mag and I went out I had new harp music to try over.

6th Decer

Fine.  I had a beautiful sachet given me by Harriet Forbes as she thought it was my birthday.  I went out with Mary Anne, Anna Bannerman accompanied us.  We two had a good deal of fun speaking our vernacular!!!  Papa Mag Will and Fanny went out for a walk together.

Sunday 7th December 1845

Excessively cold . We all went to Church and had very good sermons, etc.  Will & I read together as usual in our own room.

8th Dec

Fine.  Pat went to warthill.  Mary Anne and I walked together an made some calls. Mary Cummine called.  We cleared the small drawing room. 

9th Dec 45

Fine.  I went for a short walk with Mary Lindsay and had a turn with A. Bannerman as Willie has a shocking cold. The carpet is being put down .  The English nurse came.  Jane Anne came home.

10th December

Wetish .  I was the only lady quite well in the house!! How thankful I ought to be for my health.  Aleck left for Strathdon, to collect rents. I worked hard arranging the drawing room.  I flatter myself it is very nice indeed and all seemed to think so.  May went to church morning and evening.

11th December 1845

Very stormy indeed!  Chimney tops lamp osts, men, women and children  blown down.  The Cumines and H. Forbes called.  Nothing particular.

12th Decer 45

Calmer.  I this day attained my majority!  How very old I am becoming.  I hope if I am spared another yer to go on increasing in grace and preparing for eternity.  May God bless all my kind friends .  My health was drunk with all the honours and I made a speech for Papa myself, bu he would not  take the hints I insinuated!

13th Decer

Fine.  Will & I went out and Mamma. Tom Leslie and George Dalrymple took tea wit us. G.D. start for Ceylon tonight.

Sunday 14th December 1845

Very cold.  Wet.  We all went to church. Chas Dalrymple lunched and dined with us as well as I.L. who stayes here.

15th December

Showery.  We went out at 12 with HF poor thing!! We called on old Mrs Wilson. We were caught in a shower.  6 of us dined at Seaton where we had dinner a la Francais.  No  meat on table but only fruit and flower and wine. 

16th Dec

Fine. We were shopping.  The pole of carriage broken again. Anna Bannerman came to tea and her brother William in the evening.  Nothing particular.

17th Decer

Very hard frost.  Papa Will and I had a nice walk up the road.  We made some calls.  We went to call on the M'Phersons Old Aberdeen. Aleck came back from Strathdon.  He also was at Leith Hall and Warthill.  His poor old horse is quite done up.

18th Dec

Very fine but cold.  I have caught a bad cold so I am not allowed to go out.  So I have been busy reading and practising.

19th Dec. 

Wretched day.  Mary Lindsay made a long call. The Bannermans called and Anna sat some time with me.  I had a funny paper communication with her after dinner.

20th Dec

Wet.  Mr Leslie and Kate came from Warthill. We had an early dinner as all the gents went to the club.  It was Papa's club and Mr Innes in the chair.  He had a number of nice guests and it went off very well.  Sir Michael Bruce proposed Mamma's health!!!  Pat was proposed as a member by Lord James Hay.   

Sunday 21st December

Piercingly cold.  All went to church but me. Will says that dr Forsyth's morning sermon was beautiful.  Mr Leslie dined with us. Al read aloud at night.

22nd Dec

Showery.  Mamma called for Lady Hay and Mrs Mitchell.  The 4 heads of the family dined at Al Piries.  Everything in the house and at table beautiful.  Papa danced when he heard that Sir Robert Peel was sent for again.

23rd December

Damp.  I went out to shop with Mamma in the carriage. Mary Anne Will and I with Pat and Aleck went to the Assembly in the evening.  It was a very nice one.  We danced a great deal.  Mary Lindsay and Willie the two prettiest in the room in my opinion and in many others' also.  Lord James & Mr. Gudin called.

24th December

Fine.  We were busy paying accounts all day.  We had Mr Essen and Mr Whyte at diner also John Leslie and Mr W. Bannerman.  The Irvines called.

25th December 1845

Merry Christmas. Very fine day.

The Leslies were at Church all day.  We also went to St Marys .  Aleck presented us with a pair of  nice gloves!  We had a walk with him.  Letter from Duncan.

26th Decer

Fine.   Papa Mamma & Mag went for a day or two to Inchmarlo.  Mrs Skene called.  we went out a little.  The steamer has at length arrived and all anxiety ended as all are safe.  Aleck and William Bannerman went to Mrs Mills.  Mr Leslie dined with us.  We danced in the evening  Gilly Callum.

27th December

Fine.  Will and I made a number of calls.  Aleck and I went to a very slow party at Mrs F. Gordon.  I think I did for Mr. Lumsden Balmedie.

Sunday 28th December. 

Very hard frost. We all went to church. We had a sort of charity sermon and a most excellent one.  Aleck read aloud.  Uncle Alexander  came into tea with us.

29th December

Wetish.  I walked about the whole day.  The Hays and Gudins dined here also Capt Christy and young Mr. Irvine.  The Miss Irvines came to tea.  I had a gret deal of fun with Mr Irvine about a very particular friend of both!!

30th december

Wet.  We called on the Moirs, Par.  I am reading Court of The Georges.  Mamma & Papa went to dinner at Mr Thos Hogarth's. MA and Pat to Mr Cochranes and I by myself went to a musical soiree at Mrs Brownings.  Isabella Forbes was my only friend.  We had a pleasant enough evening.

31st December 1845

Fine.  We were out walking as usual payed quantitity of accounts.  we two and Kate Leslie went accross to the Bannermans to  tea.  We danced and had a very merry evening.  Will and I sat up till 12 o'clock together!
