My Gr-Great Grandfather James Newbold Jones
James Newbold Jones
b. 17 Sept 1813 Jonestown PA
d. 2 Jan 1891 Jonestown PA
James Newbold Jones was the oldest son and second child of Benjamin and Nancy Jones, born in the newly established village of Jonestown in Fishing Creek Township, Columbia County, Pa.
James' Working Life
Benjamin's two living sons James and Richard inherited their father's land, grist mill, and saw mill after his death in 1850 and ran them together until 1857, when they divided the property. Richard took the sawmill and farm; James took the grist mill, which he rebuilt. He then took his brother-in-law John Merrill as his partner, who later sold out to William Mears, then James sold his interest to Ira Thomas and retired. When he came of age he was commissioned as postmaster of Fishing Creek under the Jackson administration (1829-1837) and held that office for 40 years. James was a Henry Clay Whig, thus his first son's name, and then became a Republican. James was of draft age when the Cival War came to Pennsylvania. He reputedly paid someone else off to take his place in the draft, this person survived the war and returned home to claim his land. There is an IRS Tax Assessment on his land for the tax year 1864.

What happened to the children?
- Henry Clay Jones may have married twice, but he is always living with his family at census time. His first marriage was brief and was reportedly to Marilda Buckalew (1851-1879). They had 3 children Kentley Rollins (11 Jan 1873-17 Feb 1940); Harry Buckalew (6 Feb 1874011 Nov 1877) and Benjamin McKinney (5 June 1875-9 March 1897). Possibly he married again to Adelaide "Addie" Williams (Jan 1863-?). They had 4 children: Carrie M. born August 1887, James N. (Newbold?) born May 1889; Estella b. Oct. 1892; William M. born May 1896.
- Estella married John Kimble, a miller, in 1870 and they moved to Benton, where they had two boys: Lawrence M. (b. 1872) and Clinton L. (b. 1876-d. 1929)
- William Wallace Jones married Anna Eliza Fahringer in 1885, became a mine engineer and moved to Wilkes-Barre. They had 2 girls who lived, and 3 babies that died. The girls were Ruth (b. 1892) and Grace (b. 1896)

Caroline Merrill
Though her brother is identified as being a partner of James N., I have not been able to find ancestry for her or where she was living before her marriage to James. There is a Richard Merrill who lived in the Burlington New Jersey area; perhaps they followed to the new settlement in Columbia County. New Jersey's early censuses have been lost.
