9.2 Elizabeth MARKS ( Sarah MICHELMORE , Mary Ann , William (4) , William (3) , John (5) , Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born in 1868 in Prestleigh, Doulting, Somerset [near Shepton Mallet], and died there in 1930.

Elizabeth married Robert John WADMAN in 1891, probably in Doulting.  Robert was born in 1857 in Horsington, Somerset, son of agricultural labourer George WADMAN and his wife Julia.

Elizabeth and Robert had the following children.

	10.1	M	i	Walter Leonard WADMAN was born in 1891 in Prestleigh. He married Amy Nellie Treasure WADMAN, the widow of his brother Robert, in 1950 in Droxford, Hampshire and died in 1977 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
+	10.2	M	ii	Robert Wilfred Harry WADMAN was born in in 1894 in Prestleigh.
	10.3	M	iii	Wilfred Edward Luke WADMAN was born in 1903 in Prestleigh, married Emma Mabel GOULD in 1933and died in 1966 in Portsmouth. Emma was born on 19 Sep 1900 in Wells, Somerset, and died in 1972 in Hailsham, Sussex.

9.11 Georgina LEAR ( Harriett MITCHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 12 Dec 1855 in Dartmouth, Devon. She was christened on 10 Feb 1856 at Dartmouth St Petrox as Harriet Sophia but was generally referred to as Georgina. On 17 Sep 1882 she was re-christened as Georgina at a ceremony where her half-sister Caroline was also christened. Curiously, the baptism register records her twice, once under her maiden name and once under her married name. She died in Dartmouth in 1894.

Georgina married naval shipwright Charles TUCKETT in 1881. Charles was born in 1851 in Exeter, son of hatter Thomas TUCKETT and his wife Harriet, and died in 1912 in Exeter.

Georgina and Charles had the following children.

	10.5	F	ii	Laura Violet Cecilia TUCKETT, known as Violet, was born on 14 Aug 1883 and christened at Dartmouth St Petrox on 26 Aug 1883. In 1901, she was living with her aunt Emma in New Road, Kingswear and in 1911 was a domestic nurse at Torbay Hall, Chelston, Torquay.

9.12 Charlotte LEAR ( Harriett MITCHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) , Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born in 1859 in Dartmouth and died there in 1898.

Charlotte married Dartmouth tailor Philip Henry PEPPERELL on 4 Oct 1884 at Dartmouth St Saviour, with her half-sister Caroline as one of the witnesses. Philip was born in 1862 in Stoke Fleming, Devon, son of tailor Joseph Blatch PEPPERELL and his wife Hannah, and died in 1925 (probably in Dartmouth).

Philip moved to Dartmouth to be apprenticed to tailor William SPARKES and then became a tailor himself. Within 18 months of Charlotte's death, he married Annie BUNCROFT and accepted her 15-year-old daughter Elsie into his household. In 1911, his four children by Charlotte LEAR were still living with him in Dartmouth. Also in the household at this time was his step-daughter Alice's future husband, Frederick JARVISS.

	10.8	M	ii	William Allen PEPPERELL was born on 2 Apr 1891 in Dartmouth and was christened on 3 Sep 1891 at Dartmouth St Saviour. He died early the following year, probably in Dartmouth.
+	10.9	M	iii	Percival Lear PEPPERELL was born on 27 Oct 1893 in Dartmouth.
	10.10	M	iv	Philip Allen PEPPERELL was born on 15 Apr 1895 in Dartmouth and christened at Dartmouth St Saviour on 27 Jun 1895. He died in 1967 in Chard, Somerset.
				Philip married Jessie Celia COAKER in 1924. Jessie was born in 1892 in Widecombe in the Moor, daughter of hind Jonas COAKER and his wife Mary Grace, and was christened there on 12 Jun 1892. She had married Richard Ernest William FRENCH  on 27 Dec 1909 in Princetown, Devon. Jessie died in 1963 somewhere in the Newton Abbot district.

9.13 Caroline JOSLING ( Harriett MITCHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born in 1866 in Dartmouth. She was christened as an adult on 17 Sep 1882 at Dartmouth St Petrox along with her half sister Georgina. She appears to have died in Surrey in 1946.

Caroline lived with her parents in Lower Street, Dartmouth until she married... In 1891 she was living at Above Town, Dartmouth with her daughter and her sister-in-law Laura ROWE, and in 1911 she was living with her daughter Bertha and her new husband at Beach Cottage, High Street, Chobham, Surrey.

Caroline married fitter William Pearce ROWE on 20 Apr 1889 at Dartmouth St Petrox. William was born in 1866 in Dartmouth, son of mariner Walter Pearce  ROWE and his wife Sarah Jane.

William was not often at home at census time. In 1901 the family were living at 115 Riverdale Road, Erith, Kent, where William was a gun fitter.

9.14 Emma Williams JOSLING ( Harriett MITCHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 26 Jun 1869 in Dartmouth and christened on 1 Oct 1882 at Dartmouth St Petrox along with her sisters Ann and Laura. She died in Croydon, Surrey, on 16 Dec 1950 and was buried at Longcross Cemetery, Dartmouth, in the same grave as her husband.

By 1891, she was an assistant schoolmistress in the parish school at Harberton, Devon, and boarding in The School House. At the time of her marriage a year later was living at Spring Terrace, New Road, Dartmouth. In 1901, she was a teacher in an unidentified board school.

Emma married tailor Richard Watts FERRIS of Clarence Street, Dartmouth in 1892. Richard was born in 1867 in Dartmouth, son of sawyer George FERRIS and his wife Elizabeth. George FERRIS of Blackawton and his wife Elizabeth.  He died in Hampstead on 1 Sep 1927 and was buried at Longcross Cemetery, Dartmouth.

Emma and Richard moved to Kingswear soon after the birth of their daughter. In 1901 they were living in New Road and in 1911 at "Bryn-Mor", Kingswear.

Iris Guinevere Joselyn FERRIS was born on 9 Dec 1893 in Dartmouth and christened on 13 Jan 1894 at Dartmouth St Saviour along with her cousin Percy. She died unmarried on 3 Aug 1977 in Croydon and was buried at Longcross Cemetery in her parents' grave.

9.15 Ann Elizabeth JOSLING ( Harriett MITCHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 23 Mar 1872 in Dartmouth and christened on 1 Oct 1882 at Dartmouth St Petrox along with her sisters Emma and Laura. She died in 1938 in Surrey.

In 1891, she was a shop assistant living with her mother on Lower Street, Dartmouth, and presumably working in her mother's greengrocery shop. By 1901, she had become a bookkeeper and was working in a greengrocery at 35 Sharsted Street, Newington, London. In 1911, she was living with her new husband at 1 Chestnut Villa, Brookwood, Surrey.

Ann married grocer's assistant Levi Stephen HAWTHORNE, known as Stephen, on 18 Aug 1909 at St Michael's, Aldershot, Hampshire. Levi was born in 1877 in Chobham, Surrey, son of labourer Levi HAWTHORNE and his wife Naomi Esther née EACOTT, and died in 1957 in Surrey.

Ann and Stephen had the following child.

9.17 Caroline MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 27 August 1857 in Dartmouth and christened at St Petrox Church, Dartmouth, on 23 Sep 1857. She died on 19 Sep 1927 in Dartmouth and was buried at Townstall.

In 1881, Caroline inherited "all the houses and premises known as the Island (late Lindsay's) situate at Bearscove", the premises next to what is now the Lower Ferry slip, from her father. Memorial windows in St. Barnabas Church, Dartmouth, celebrate her life and that of her husband:

Caroline married Robert Thomas PILLAR, son of builder Langmead Casey PILLAR and Amelia Rebecca Tucker CAME, on 5 Sep 1878 in Dartmouth. Robert was born in the third quarter of 1857 in Dartmouth. He died on 3 Apr 1931 and was buried in Townstall.

Robert joined his father's South Town business as carpenter, builder and undertaker (making it "L. C. Pillar & Son") as a young man. His brother Richard Came PILLAR joined the same firm in about 1883, making it "L. C. Pillar & Sons", but when their father died in 1893 Robert and Richard both set up their own businesses. Robert was living at "Homeleigh", Lower Street in 1891 and 1901; at Island House, Lower Street in 1906; and at "Bellevue", South Town, in 1911. He then built the family home at 21 South Embankment (or South Parade). His son William Thomas joined the firm in his turn, continuing it under the name of "R. T. Pillar & Son" until 1945.

Robert was a councillor in the Dartmouth Town Council from 1910 to 1920.

				Amelia married Clifford Trist CRANFORD on 20 Feb 1906 at Dartmouth St Saviour. Clifford was born on 27 Nov 1875 in Dartmouth, and in 1914 was living in Fairfax Place, Dartmouth. He died in Birmingham, England, on 3 Dec 1938 and was buried at Townstall.

	10.19	F	vi	Caroline Charlotte (Lottie) PILLAR was born in 1890 in Dartmouth and baptised at St Petrox on 10 Apr 1890. She lived with her parents at least until 1911. In 1926, when she was living in  Chancery Lane, London, she visited her brother Lionel in Brisbane, Australia. Lottie died on 23 Jul 1963 at Cardiff, Wales when she was living at 69 Kimberley Road, Penylan.
				Charlotte married insurance broker Frank HYDE in 1921, probably in Dartmouth. Frank died in 1973 in Cardiff, Wales.

9.18 William Henry (2) MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was christened on 19 Oct 1859 in Dartmouth and died in 1910 in Plymouth, Devon.

William married Sarah Betsy Pellow CRABB in 1880. Sarah was born in 1859 in Devonport, Devon, daughter of Frederick Edward and Ann CRABB, and died on 28 Apr 1942 in Plymouth.

William and Sarah had the following children.

9.19 Eliza MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born in 10 Apr 1861 at Bearcove [Bayard's Cove], Dartmouth and christened on 15 May 1861 at Dartmouth St Petrox. She died on 13 Feb 1902 in Brixham, shortly after the birth of her last child, and was buried in Brixham St Mary.

At age 19, when her father died he left her "my two Dwellinghouses and premises situate in Newcomin Road Saint Petrox ... except the Cellars thereunder which I have given to my son William Henry Mitchelmore". After her marriage, she moved with her husband to Fore Street, Brixham.

Eliza married John Putt DECENT on 24 Mar 1885 in Dartmouth. John, son of master mariner William DECENT and his wife Jane Poole née PUTT, was born on 8 Aug 1860 at Manor Terrace, Brixham, and christened as an adult on 30 Mar 1905 at Brixham St Mary. He died on 8 Mar 1930 in Brixham and was buried in St Mary's churchyard.

9.20 Kate Mary MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 31 Mar 1863 and christened on 24 Apr 1863 in Dartmouth. She died in 1949.

Kate married William Henry HAWKE on 9 Jan 1882 in Dartmouth. Henry was born on 15 Jul 1860 in Dartmouth, son of coal and corn merchant William Aysh HAWKE and his wife Rebecca née MUMFORD, and died in 1946.

William started his working life in his father's business in Foss Street, Dartmouth. After his marriage, he moved to Higher Mount Galpin, Townstall, where he also became an agent for Royal Exchange Insurance. About 1893, the family moved to South Brent, Devon, where William ran his own business as a coal and corn merchant. In 1914, he was reported to be a railway goods delivery agent and a "miller (water)" in South Brent.

	10.37	F	iii	Edith Augusta HAWKE was born on 8 Nov 1885 in Dartmouth and christened on 8 Jan 1886 at St Saviour. In 1901, she was a pupil at The College, Bridgetown, a girls' boarding school, as were her sisters Kate and Daisy. She died in 1970 at Richmond upon Thames.
				Edith married engineer Frederick William Barnard SAUNDERS, son of William Loveday SAUNDERS, on 27 March 1913 in South Brent. Frederick was born in 1886 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and died in 1962 in Sturminster, Dorset.

+	10.39	M	v	Frederick Herbert Ayshe HAWKE was born on 9 Jun 1891 in Dartmouth.
	10.40	M	vi	Harold Ayshe HAWKE was born on 8 Jul 1893 in South Brent and baptised on 16 Feb 1894 at Dartmouth St Saviour. Harold emigrated to the USA, arriving at New York aboard the Caronia on 20 Nov 1909 en route to Chicago to stay with uncle George DUDER at Grand Ridge IL. He must have returned to England, because in Mar 1913 he arrived at Halifax NS en route to Winnipeg MB. By 6 Nov 1917 he had become a US citizen and registered for the WW1 draft at the US consulate in Winnipeg MB. He stated that he was a mechanic working for the Dominion Motor Car Company, Winnipeg, but gave his home address as Grand Ridge, Rockwood Farm, Ottawa IL and also Halandale FL.

9.21 Edith Augusta MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 9 Nov 1864 and christened on Christmas Day 1866 in Dartmouth. She died in 1950 in Hendon.

Upon her father's death in 1881, Edith inherited "the two houses in Carlton Terrace, New Road, Dartmouth [now Victoria Road] which I lately purchased from Mr Ashford". In 1890 her mother was living in one of these houses and in 1897 her brother Charles was living in the other.

In 1891, Edith was visiting Kate SEWELL, a sister of her future husband, at 4 Pembridge Villas, Kensington, London. After the marriage, the couple moved to 2 Grove Villas, Regents Park Road, Finchley.    

Edith married Walter Manning SEWELL on 23 Dec 1893 in Dartmouth. Walter was born in 1866 in Middleton, Suffolk, son of farmer William Hullen SEWELL and his wife Sarah Ann née MANNING. He died in 1958 in Hendon.

Walter was recorded as a warehouseman in 1891 and on his marriage certificate. In 1901, he was a "warehouseman ladies under clothing" and in 1911 simply a warehouseman.

	10.41	M	i	Sidney Walter SEWELL was born in 1896 in Finchley, Middlesex, and died in 1972 in Tonbridge, Kent.
				Sidney married Amy Sarah GRANDFIELD in 1923 in Finchley. Amy was born in the St Saviour district of Southwark, London, in 1895, daughter of hatter John GRANDFIELD and his wife Ellen née NORTHCOTT. She died in 1958 in Uckfield, Sussex.

	10.43	M	iii	Edward George SEWELL was born in 1900 in Finchley and died in 1990 in Tunbridge Wells. He is believed to have married Hazel but no marriage record has been found.
	10.44	M	iv	Robert SEWELL was born in 1903 in Finchley.
				Robert married Doris Ivy READER in 1932 in Finchley. Doris was born in Wandsworth in 1900 and died in 1990 in Bracknell, Berkshire.
	10.45	F	v	Margaret Edith SEWELL was born in 1905 in Finchley and died in 1933 in Dartford, Kent.

9.23 Frederick George (1) MITCHELMORE ( William Henry (1) , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 28 Dec 1869 in Dartmouth and died on 19 Jul 1920 in Durban, South Africa.

After his father's death when he was only 12, Frederick moved with his mother to 2 Carlton Terrace, Dartmouth. In accordance with his father's will, in which he also inherited fields and premises at "Ridges", he was given "a good boarding school consistent with [his father's] position in life for the term of three years". Between 1886 and 1896, he played rugby for Dartmouth and for Devon; and in 1888-1889 he rowed with the Dartmouth Amateur Rowing Club.

In 1891 he was a boarding clerk, but by 1895 was running the Dartmouth Arms Public House in Lower Street and living at The Island, Bayard's Cove. In 1900 he was still running the Dartmouth Arms but had also started a coal merchant business.

Later in 1900, Frederick went to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. He enlisted in the Natal Mounted Rifles and then the 27th Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. He judged to be "inefficient" in 1901 and was to be sent home; but this order was clearly rescinded, for he was wounded at Kalkfontein in 1902 and received the Queen's and the King's South Africa Medal with clasps. After the war ended, he returned to Dartmouth to continue running his coal merchant business on the North Embankment.

Frederick returned to Natal with his wife in 1906. His funeral at Stellawood Cemetery, Durban, in 1920 was attended by several members of the League of Comrades.

Frederick married Mabel Augusta Mary ATHERTON, on 27 Dec 1893 in Dartmouth St Petrox. Mabel, known in the family as Augusta, was born in Dartmouth in 1872 and died in Basingstoke in 1947. She was a daughter of Thomas William ATHERTON, a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy, and his wife Susan Elizabeth Wotton NILLING.

Augusta ran the Dartmouth Arms Public House while Frederick was in South Africa. She went to South Africa with Frederick in 1906, but by 1911 had returned and was working as a housekeeper in a public house in Plymouth. In the 1940s, she lived in Basingstoke with her son George for a time but then moved up to Burton-on-Trent to live with her other son, Fred. After this, she went to Leicester and got a job as a housekeeper. Presumably she died at George's.

9.30 Charles Frederick MALLETT ( Anne Elizabeth MICHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 26 Apr 1870 in Babbacombe, Devon, and christened there on 20 May 1870. He died in 1962 in Plymouth.

On 25 Feb 1878, he was admitted to Brixham British School along with his brothers John, William and George. In 1901, Charles was a seaman in the Royal Navy and living with his son in Devonport, Devon. By 1911 he had taken his Navy pension and was working as an assurance agent and living at 38 Ford Hill, Stoke Damerel.

Charles married Minnie Emma DAVIS in 1895. Minnie was born in 1871 in Devonport and died in 1951 in the Plympton district.

	10.50	M	ii	Herbert George MALLETT was born on 9 Oct 1901 and died there in 1902.
	10.51	M	iii	Albert James MALLETT was also born on 9 Oct 1901 in Devonport and died there in 1902 less than six months after the death of his twin brother.
	10.52	F	iv	Kathleen Eva MALLETT was born on 31 Jul 1904 in Devonport and baptised at Devonport St Michael on 22 Sep 1904. She died in 1978 in Plymouth.
	10.53	M	v	Arthur Bramwell MALLETT was born on 13 Mar 1907 in Devonport and baptised at Devonport St Michael on 21 Apr 1907. He died in 1977 in Plymouth.
	10.54	F	vi	Marjorie D MALLETT was born in 1912 in Devonport.

9.33 Alfred Mitchelmore MALLETT (Anne Elizabeth MICHELMORE , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry )  was born on 1 Feb 1877  in Brixham and christened on 25 May at Brixham All Saints. He died in 1944 in Teignmouth.

Alfred started his career as a pupil teacher in Newton Abbot, but later entered the Royal Navy as a gunner. He became a Lieutenant in 1923 and by 1935 had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. According to his cousin Charles Frederick MITCHELMORE's 1918 funeral announcement, he was also a Teignmouth Councillor.

Alfred married Emma Annie AUSTIN in 1899. Emma was born in 1872 in Devonport and died in 1951 in the Newton Abbot district.

Alfred and Emma had the following children.

	10.55	F	i	Eunice MALLETT was born on 25 Aug 1904 in Devonport and died in 1986 in Boston, Lincolnshire. She married (1) Evzen ESTERAK in 1943 and (2) Robert Leslie TAIT in 1967. Robert was born on 3 Jul 1904 in Sunderland, Durham, and died in 1971 in Boston.

9.34 Augustus John MITCHELMORE ( Nathaniel , John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5) ,  Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 6 Mar 1863 in Dartmouth and christened at St Saviour's Church, Dartmouth, on 3 May 1863. He died on 10 Mar 1929 at the Chilton Nursing Home, Plymouth, as a result of an enlarged prostate, nephritis and cardiac failure, and was buried in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.

Augustus was recorded as a boat builder in 1881. After a few years in the merchant navy, he entered the Royal Navy in 1889 as a carpenter and rose steadily through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as shipwright lieutenant commander in 1926. In 1919, he was awarded the MBE for his services during World War I.
