A South Devon TUCKER family

Seventh Generation

7.2 John (1) TUCKER (John (2) TUCKER , Thomas (3) TUCKER , John (7) TUCKER , Thomas (5) TUCKER , John TUCCAR , Gilbert TUCKER ) was christened on 21 Sep 1834 in Brixham, Devon. He died there on 4 Dec 1915 and was buried at Brixham St Mary.

Like his father and grandfather before him, John was a mariner. Also like his father, he was away from home on most census dates. In the 1861 census, he was recorded as mate of the Antelope moored near Cardiff. In 1901, he was a general labourer living in Brixham.
John married Mary Grace WARD in 1854. Mary was christened on 7 Oct 1827 in Brixham, daughter of Brixham stonemason Philip WARD and Elizabeth née BELL. She died on 13 Dec 1904 and was buried at Brixham St Mary.
In 1881, Mary was working as a nurse and living in Burton Steet, Brixham.

John and Mary had the following children:

+
8.1 F i Margaret TUCKER was born on 22 Oct 1854 in Brixham.

Mary Ann (1) TUCKER was also born on 22 Oct 1854 in Brixham. She was christened on 10 Dec 1854 but died a couple of months later and was buried on 22 Feb 1855 in Brixham.

8.3
M ii John (3) TUCKER was born in 1865 in Brixham. By 1881, he had become a shipwright and was living with his sister Margaret and her family at 4 Upton Cottages, Brixham. He died in 1892 while on a voyage to Valparaiso, and was buried at Brixham St Mary.

7.3 Robert (2) TUCKER (John (2) TUCKER , Thomas (3) TUCKER , John (7) TUCKER , Thomas (5) TUCKER , John TUCCAR , Gilbert TUCKER ) was christened on 29 Jan 1837 in Brixham and died on 3 Dec 1909 at 15 Hilda Street, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, of stomach cancer.

After his marriage, Robert lived initially in Middle Street, Brixham, but by 1871 was living in Brown's Buildings, Strand Street. He was recorded variously as a shipsmith and a journeyman blacksmith.

The family then moved to Grimsby, no doubt after Robert or one of their many mariner relatives had visited the town on a fishing trip. In 1881, Robert was a blacksmith resident with his wife and five children at 15 Hilda Street, Clee with Weelsby (now called Old Clee), Grimsby, where he continued to live until his death.

Robert clearly retained his family's connection to the sea. In 1881, his son George was already employed on a fishing boat and he had a fisherman as a lodger. Also, his daughter Mary Ann married a fisherman.

Robert was recorded as a shopkeeper in Clee in 1891 and a draper in 1897. In 1901 he was the caretaker of a hall, and in 1903 and 1909 he was a chapel caretaker.

Robert married Elizabeth Millman ROBERTS on 30 Aug 1860 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Brixham. Elizabeth was born in 1836 in Brixham, the daughter of  Brixham fisherman John George ROBERTS and Mary Anne née MILLMAN. She died on 28 Nov 1903 at 15 Hilda Street, Grimsby, after a long fight with cancer.

Elizabeth's sister Phyllis married another Brixham fisherman, John Carlile SALSBURY. She moved to Grimsby to live near Elizabeth when her husband died.

Robert and Elizabeth had the following children:

+
8.4 F i Mary Ann Roberts TUCKER was born on 13 Feb 1863 in Brixham.
+
8.5
M ii George Henry TUCKER was born in 1867 in Dartmouth, Devon.
+
8.6 F iii Elizabeth (1) TUCKER was born in 1872 in Grimsby.
+
8.7 F iv Hannah George TUCKER was born in 1875 in Grimsby.

8.8
F v Melina TUCKER (called Melena in the 1881 census, Amelia in 1891 and Helen in 1901) was born in 1877 in Grimsby. In 1901, she was still living with her parents.

7.4 Mary Yandell TUCKER (John (2) TUCKER , Thomas (3) TUCKER , John (7) TUCKER , Thomas (5) TUCKER , John TUCCAR , Gilbert TUCKER ) was born on 22 Apr 1839 in Brixham and christened on 5 May 1839 at Brixham St. Mary. She died in 1898 in Paignton, Devon.

Mary was a dressmaker. After her first husband's death, she and her daughter Fanny returned to live with her parents. In 1881, she was a domestic servant in the household of John BROWN in Stafford Villa, Paignton. In 1891, Mary was living with her second husband, her daughter Fanny, and her husband's 5-year-old granddaughter Fanny FREER (daughter of John's daughter Elizabeth Ann) at 1 Collyend Terrace, Paignton.

Mary married (1) George Richard Henly HEATH in late 1861. George was born in 1840 in Totnes, Devon, the second son of auctioneer and corn dealer John HEATH and his wife Rachel. He died in 1865.

All his life before his marriage, George lived with his parents in Fore Street, Totnes—possibly in the Seven Stars Hotel, which belonged to his parents in 1861. He became a land surveyor.
Mary and George had the following child:
+
8.9 F i Fanny Tucker HEATH was born in 1868 in Brixham.

Mary married (2) John PARNELL in Paignton in 1883. John was born in Paignton in 1827 and died in 1916.

This was also John's second marriage. He had married Elizabeth PALMER (born in 1828 in South Brent) in 1949, but she died in 1880. In 1891, he was recorded as a market gardener and in 1901 as a "carter jobbing".

7.5 Thomas (2) TUCKER (John (2) TUCKER , Thomas (3) TUCKER , John (7) TUCKER , Thomas (5) TUCKER , John TUCCAR , Gilbert TUCKER ) was born on 30 Nov 1841 in Brixham and christened at Brixham St Mary on 12 Dec 1841. He died on 11 Dec 1930 at the Devon Mental Hospital, Kenton, and was buried in Townstal Cemetery.

Thomas moved to Dartmouth about 1860 and lived there for the rest of his life. He is recorded as living in Townstal in 1863, in New Road [now Victoria Road] in 1864, in Lower Street in 1871, in Bear's Cove Hill [now Bayards Cove Hill] above the Dartmouth Arms Hotel in 1881, 1887 and 1891, at "Culloden", Higher Victoria Road, in 1915, and in Lake Street at his death in 1930.

According to his obituary in the Dartmouth Chronicle, in the 1860s Thomas went to sea with Capt. James Reed TOLMAN, a well-known Dartmouth master mariner who later founded the Dartmouth & Torbay Steam Packet Company. However, Capt. Tolman sailed to the West Indies and the Mediterranean, and not to Newfoundland as stated in the obituary. (It was his father, another James TOLMAN, who sailed to Newfoundland.)

The great Torbay gale that Thomas survived actually took place in 1866. As the Chronicles of Dartmouth reports, "At sunset on 10 January, hurricane force winds struck a fleet of seventy-nine merchant and fishing vessels sheltering in Torbay. Only eleven rode out the strorm and over 100 lives were lost; eight boats driven ashore were recovered, several were sold where they lay. Many vessels could have made Brixham harbour but trawlers obstructed the entrance."

In 1867, Thomas gave up seafaring and became a Trinity House pilot in Dartmouth. With one brief interruption, he remained a pilot until his retirement in 1900. Thomas would travel up to London every fortnight and board a Castle Mail Packet Company (Donald-Currie line) steamer. With a pilot on board, there was no delay finding a pilot when the steamer arrived at Dartmouth so that it could make a more rapid turnaround. After picking up late mail that had been sent from London to Dartmouth by rail, the steamer would proceed to Cape Town, South Africa.

The Drummond Castle, built in 1881 for the Castle Line's mail service to South Africa,
called regularly at Dartmouth. Thomas may well have piloted her.

She died on 23 Aug 1921 in Dartmouth and was buried in Townstal Cemetery, her death being reported in the Dartmouth Chronicle.

Sarah married (2) Harry REA some time after 1930; they lived in Lake Street, Dartmouth. Sarah was renowned for the woollen socks she knitted, the speed with which she answered letters, and her walking endurance. She originated the family saying, "It's just around the corner, m'dear" (without saying which corner).

Fred was another Brixham mariner. He went to sea in 1857 as an apprentice on the local vessels Secret, Salem and Symmetry, becoming an able seaman in 1865. After sailing for two years from other ports, he returned to Brixham to serve as a boatswain on the Psyche and the Barbara. He obtained his certificate of competency as an Only Mate on 27 Jan 1869 and as a Master on 27 Jul 1871. He was away from home at the time of the 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses, presumably at sea.
