Mount Zion Cemetery
- Fyffe, DeKalb County, Alabama
To reach cemetery from
Fyffe, take Traylor Street NW for just over a mile. Turn west onto
CR 50 and continue about 3.5 miles. Turn right/north onto CR 539 for
about 1/2 mile. Cemetery will be on east/right side of road beside
the church.
This cemetery is northwest of Fyffe, near Green Chapel Community. It
is owned and maintained by the Mount Zion Church. It has the
following burials as well as several unmarked graves. The first
burial was that of Mary Coots in 1856, and it is still in use today.

HIGGINS, CHARLES JEFFERIES, business man and legislator, was born
December 20, 1859, at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England; son of
Charles Brailsford and Sarah (Jefferies) Higgins, of England, the
former dying when his son was three years of age; grandson of Jonas
Jefferies, of Wood Mills, Shropshire, England. He was educated in
the public schools and a private academy in England, and also took a
commercial course. He came to Cullman in the fall of 1881, where he
entered business and declared his intention of becoming an American
citizen. He represented Cullman County in the legislature of
1888-89; and was State senator from the third district in 1915. He
is a Republican; Episcopalian; and an Odd Fellow. Married: February
11, 1886, near Logan, Cullman County, to Dovie Lavina, daughter of
Jonathan and Martha (Powell) Walker, of that place. Residence:
Cullman.

Obituary
-Senator C. J. Higgins buried on Wednesday-
-Born in England, Solon came to this country in Youth-
Senator Charles Jefferson Higgins, age 76, died at the home of his
daughter, near here, on Monday evening, after an illness of several
months.
He was born in Suesberry, England, and came to America as a youth. He
had been a resident of the County for many years. Mr. Higgins served
this district as State Senator, one term, and was one of the best
known farmers in the county.
He is survived by two sons, Ed and Walter Higgins, and by a
daughter, Mrs. Alonzo Speegle, all of this county. His wife died last
fall. Mr. Higgins was a member of the Episcopal Church. The funeral
and burial was held from the West Cullman M.E. Church at 2.00
O'clock, Wednesday. Rev's T. M. Bailey, E. M. Dickerson and Rev Paul C.
Howle, were in charge of services. Interment will be in Protestant
Cemetery. The following were pallbearers; Judge A. A. Griffith, George
Stiefelmeyer, J. E. Oierce, Henry Nix, J. Humphries, John Luyben.

HIGGINS, ROBERT W., editor and public official, was born in Alabama
and died about 1862. He was reared in Jackson County, and attended
the U. S. military academy at West Point for some time. He studied
law, was admitted to the bar and lived in DeKalb County for a few
years. In 1854 or 1855, he moved to Talladega County, and became
connected with the editorial department of the "Watchtower." He was
elected to the State legislature from DeKalb County in 1857, and to
the senate from DeKalb and Marshall Counties, 1859. At one time he
was an unsuccessful candidate for secretary of state. At the
beginning of the War of Secession in 1861, Gen. Higgins entered the
C. S. Army, and was promoted until he reached the rank of major.
Before the second year of the war was over, he sickened and died.
Previous to the war he had been elected a brigadier general. He was
never married. Last residence: DeKalb County.

Location: Township 17 South Range 5 West Section 1
In the Shady Grove community; west of Adamsville;
north of Sylvan Springs. Directions: From the intersection of Shady Grove Road
(County Road 45) and Birmingport Road (Ala. Hwy 269) in Maytown (near Sylvan Springs), go north 3 &
9/10 miles on Shady Grove Road. Turn left onto Oak Leaf Circle and another left onto
Oak Leaf Drive. The cemetery is on the right (west) side of the road immediately after turning onto
Oak Leaf Drive.
