P C HIGGINS
a rancher of Carpenteria Valley, was born in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1842. His father had large farm interests in the locality of Galesburg and much city property. His father and mother are still living, each at the age of seventy five years, and they are looking forward to their golden wedding in April, 1891.
P. C. Higgins was married at Galesburg in 1864, to Miss Mary Jenks, and they then moved to Altona, Knox County, Illinois, to take charge of one of his father's farms. In 1867 they moved to Forest, Livingston County, where Mr. Higgins bought 160 acres of land, and carried on general farming for thirteen years, dealing largely in hogs, which he fattened for market. In 1880 they sold out and moved to Prairie City, Iowa, where he engaged in the hardware business, and remained three years. Through an unsatisfactory partner they made no progress, and in 1883 Mr. Higgins sold out and came to Carpenteria Valley, where he bought 108 acres of cleared land, all under cultivation. His main crop is Lima beans, the leading industry of the valley, of which he plants about ninety acres, with an average yield of from 1,500 to 2,000 pounds per acre. Mr. Higgins has a bituminous rock bed on his place, bordering on the sea, which, after careful examination is found to cover several acres in area, at an average depth of sixteen feet. They have taken out about 5,000 tons, which was used in the paving of State street in Santa Barbara. In boring for artesian water he struck natural gas, at a depth of 500 feet, although not in paying quantities: still by storing it was found to burn very rapidly. He raises, lemons and other fruits, but only for home use. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have six children, all living.

E  R  Higgins

E. R. Higgins, the well-known photographer of Fresno, was born in Canada, in 1845. In 1864 he came to California, his family having located here two years previous to that time. He made the voyage via the Isthmus of Panama, the trip consuming twenty-one days, nine days less than the steamer now requires to make the journey. On his arrival in San Francisco, in March, 1864, he entered the high school and took a business course. He subsequently attended the business college, where he acquired a thorough practical education, his schooling advantages having been limited in Canada. While pursuing his studies, Mr. Higgins also devoted some time to work in photography with his brother, who was established in that business in the city, and developing no little ability in that direction, he adopted the business himself.

Locating in Sacramento, he did a successful photographic business there for three years. Then he divided his time between working for several of the leading galleries in San Francisco and making periodical trips to the interior, until September, 1882, when he came to Fresno. He did not remain here long, however, and a few months later went back to San Francisco. In the spring of 1884 he again came to Fresno, and this time established himself permanently in the photograph business, which he still conducts. He is the pioneer photographer in Fresno and his work in justly celebrated throughout the valley.

Mr. Higgins is actively identified with the fire department of Fresno, and was the prime mover in the organization of the present department, which was effected in October, 1887. In March, 1889, he was elected chief of the department, and to him is generally conceded the greatest measure of credit for its present high state of efficiency, good management and excellent discipline.

He was married in 1876, to Miss Williams, a native of California. They have one child.

Orient C. Higgins, M. D.

O. C. Higgins, M. D., is one of the oldest practicing physicians of Porterville. He was born in Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine, in 1855. His father, Josiah H Higgins, was a school teacher by profession, and a boat builder by trade. For twenty-five years he taught winter schools about Hancock County, and his summers were devoted to his trade on Union river, where Ellsworth was situated. In 1875 he came to California, accompanied by his son Charles R., and together they worked at ship carpentering at San Francisco. O. C. Higgins was educated in common schools, and at the age of sixteen years he began the trade of boat-building and ship-joining, which he followed at Ellsworth until the fall of 1876, when he, too, started for California to join his father at San Francisco. They then took a house and followed boat-building by day, while the subject devoted his evenings to study, and in the winter of 1879 he took up the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Alexander McRea, paying all fees of tuition and expenses from his personal savings. He graduated from the California Medical College--Eclective--at Oakland, April 26, 1882. He was married in San Francisco, November 1, 1881, to Miss Hattie G. Perry, a native of Maine. The doctor commenced practice on Mission street, San Francisco, and came to Porterville in June, 1882, upon the suggestion and recommendation of Dr. G. G. Gere, a professor of the medical college, and a former practitioner at Porterville. Dr. Higgins rented Dr. Gere's house on the corner of Oak and Gum streets, and after five years of practice the location seemed so desirable, that he purchased the property. The doctor built up an extensive practice, traveling in every direction within a radius of forty miles. While he has made much money, he has also performed much gratuitous service; the circumstances of the applicant were never considered, as the appeal from the poor when suffering or in distress, received the same prompt attention. He is a devoted attendant to business, and either at his office or in professional attendances, is constantly engaged. He was elected coroner and public administrator in 1888, but after six months of service, was obliged to resign, owing to professional duties. Dr. and Mrs. Higgins have three children: Robert M., Eloise L. and Hattie M.

Obituary: Dennis Owen Higgins, respected defense attorney
By Ramon Coronado -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PDT Thursday, October 7, 2004

Sacramento defense attorney Dennis Owen Higgins struggled with cancer for nearly five years, but he didn't stop coming to court until two weeks ago. "He was courageous how he fought for his clients, and he demonstrated that same courage in his fight with cancer," said Sacramento County Assistant Public Defender Linda Parisi.

On Monday, on his 18th wedding anniversary and the day before his 57 birthday, Mr. Higgins died of esophageal cancer.

He was the junior and varsity girls' basketball coach and president of the parents' board at St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School. He was a member of the president's advisory board of California State University, Sacramento. But Mr. Higgins was best known as a popular defense attorney in Sacramento Superior Court.

As word of his death passed this week through the Ninth Street main courthouse, a somber mood fell upon attorneys, prosecutors, clerks, stenographers, interpreters and judges, some of whom have known Higgins for the past 26 years.

"So many are saddened. We all knew what he was going through, and he wouldn't give up," said Judge James L. Long, who presided over one of Mr. Higgins last murder trials.

It was during the May trial of Deondre Terrell Hudson that Higgins received news that a special treatment he was receiving was no longer working on his growing cancer. The judge halted the trial one afternoon and sent the jury home for what was going to be a four-day break.

Mr. Higgins, however, notified the court the same afternoon and insisted upon finishing the trial without the long break. The jury was phoned and returned the next day.

The son of an Irish immigrant, Mr. Higgins worked his way through Lincoln Law School as a bartender and clerk at the Pine Cove Tavern and Bottle Shop at 29th and E streets, establishments that have deep roots in Sacramento.

He became a lawyer in 1978 and after a short stint as a Sacramento public defender, Mr. Higgins went into private practice, filing personal-injury lawsuits and defending people charged with crimes ranging from bribery and burglary to rape and murder.

"He dealt with some of worst people in jail," said Philip E. Carey, who shared office space with Mr. Higgins for the past 12 years.

"In some personal-injury cases where people were out of a car and needed to get around, he would lend his credit card so the client could rent a car. At the end of the case he would get his money back, but most attorneys wouldn't do that," Carey said.

Daniel P. Whaley, who was Mr. Higgins' partner for nine years, said their law firm was more than a business.

"Our annual law firm party was held on Halloween. We worked hard, and we goofed off hard," Whaley said.

Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully, who went to law school with Mr. Higgins, said the ever-smiling man didn't take long to develop a reputation.

"He didn't assume the role of us against them. He developed relationships," Scully said.

Deputy District Attorney Hilary Bagley Franzoia has known Mr. Higgins since his family moved to Sacramento from Woodland in 1959.

"He was very opinionated. But he had a sweetness about him. He was very giving, generous and supportive of others," Bagley Franzoia said.

"I know of 10 of us he told we could go to law school and make it, and we did. I owe him for that," the prosecutor said.

Mr. Higgins remained a defense attorney despite being surrounded by others who selected careers in law enforcement. His older brother is a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles; one nephew is a Sacramento prosecutor; and another nephew is a Sacramento policeman.

Parisi, who also went to law school with Mr. Higgins, said successful defense attorneys like him are unusual.

"What he recognized in people was that they were more than the sum of their bad acts," Parisi said. "As defense attorneys we come to see our whole client, not just their acts. He would truly open his whole heart to that."

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Gerald S. Bakarich, who has known the family for more than 30 years, said Mr. Higgins was not only a good lawyer, but also a good man.

"He loved his family and adored his wife and two girls," Bakarich said.

"I never heard him swear or say anything bad about anybody. He knew every day was a gift from God," Bakarich said.

Obituary Tom J. Higgins, 77: cartoonist,  ' Believe It Or Not' contributor
For professional cartoonist Tom J. Higgins, trivia was a lifetime pursuit.

By the time he died March 11 in San Diego, a record of 487 of his items had been published in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not!", a daily syndicated cartoon panel.

In stretching the bonds of credibility and making oddities accessible, Mr. Higgins became a cartoon character himself.

When his 100th item was published in 1981, his cartoon likeness was included in the "Believe It Or Not" panel. And Mr. Higgins had become a trivia addict's hero, sought for media interviews from New York to Australia.

Mr. Higgins, a San Diegan for the past 16 years, died of pulmonary failure at Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 77.

In 1984, he moved from Solomon County in New York to San Diego in search of a better climate for his health, which began to decline after he suffered lung damage in the Army during the post-World War II occupation of Japan.

As a youth in his native Far Rockaway, N.Y., Mr. Higgins' fascination with unusual events and facts led him to submit his first "Believe It Or Not" item.

"Much to my surprise, it was used in one of the daily panels," he later said.

Each year, Robert Ripley, a former New York Globe cartoonist who originated "Believe It Or Not", would send Mr. Higgins an autographed copy of his latest hardcover book. It was both a reward for his contributions and a source of inspiration.

In 1943, Mr. Higgins put his hobby on hold when he was drafted into the Army. He served as an aircraft mechanic and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. Later he was assigned to Japan as a staff sergeant.

"It was right after the (atom) bomb had been dropped and he suffered scarred lungs," said his wife, Teresa. "He spent 2 1/2 years recovering in a hospital."

After returning to New York, Mr. Higgins attended a school in Manhattan for cartoonists and illustrators and began a career as a free-lance cartoonist.

In Far Rockaway, he found the career to be hit-and-miss, so he combined it with landscaping to make ends meet. He then moved to Maine, where he drew cartoons and worked as a newspaper pressman.

By 1957, Mr. Higgins was writing a gossip column and contributing cartoons to the Townsman, a newspaper in Grahamsville, N.Y. Working out of his home in the Catskill Mountains, he also supplied trade publications with cartoons. His specialty, as he put it, was "oddity panels."

Over the years, they included such titles as "Mutual Mirror" for insurance clients, Autooddities" for automobile dealers, "Matter of Fact" for dairy products and "Electrivia" for an electrical wholesaler.

Throughout his cartooning career, "Believe It Or Not" items remained his passion. "Tom was a trivia nut," his wife said. "He was always looking for something different and out of the ordinary. Every time he picked up a newspaper, something would catch his eye that nobody else would notice."

He was working on cartoons and researching oddities until the day he died, she said.

Mr. Higgins also was known for his skill in building birdhouses and carving walking sticks. "He handcrafted the houses out of driftwood he found on the beach and gave them to friends," his wife said.

As a member of the Southern California Cartoon Society, Mr. Higgins contributed a memorial cover to the organization's monthly newsletter, "A Slice of Wry." His cartoon put together the names of every society member in the form of a Santa Claus.

"Tom's knowledge of cartoon history was encyclopedic," said Jim Whiting, president of the Southern California Cartoon Society. "He knew who drew which strips, starting when, and what the names of the characters were in those strips.

"He sold some cartoons to the major markets but his bailiwick, really, was trade journals and house organs. He was good at cultivating his own clients, publishers represented minimally on the cartoon market lists.

"And, of course, Tom was the all-time champ when it came to furnishing items for "Believe It Or Not".

Survivors include his wife, Teresa; a daughter, Gail Higgins of London, sons, Timothy and Patrick, both of San Diego; a sister, Marilyn Higgins of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; brothers, Jim of Cedarhurst, N.Y., and Edward of Copaigue, N.Y.; and three grandsons.

Cremation was planned. Ashes will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at 10 a.m. April 13. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. April 15 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Clairemont.

Donations in the name of Tom Higgins are suggested to the National World War II Memorial Fund, Courthouse Plaza 2, Suite 501, 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201.
