The Department of Defense
announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation
Iraqi Freedom.
Sgt. Andrew J. Higgins, 28, of Hayward, Calif., died June 5 in
Baqubah, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with
enemy forces using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 5th
Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry
Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.

(CBS 5 / AP) HAYWARD A U.S. Army soldier from Hayward died this week
from injuries he sustained during an attack in Iraq, the U.S.
Defense Department said Thursday.
Sgt. Andrew J. Higgins, a 28-year-old member of the elite
Ranger corps was on his second deployment in Iraq when he was killed
by small arms fire Tuesday while fighting insurgents in Baquba, the
Department of Defense said.
Higgins wanted to be a soldier and serve his country from the time
he was a boy, his father said. "He was a wonderful person, the
kind of soldier who chooses to go to someplace like Iraq for his
country," Jerry James Higgins said of his son. While still in
high school, Andrew Higgins took army basic training and spent two
years in the U.S. Army Reserves after graduating.
Higgins was part of the first U.S. troop deployment to Afghanistan
to fight the Taliban. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division from Ft.
Lewis, Wash. "He was more and more disappointed with what was
happening to the troops over there. He had made up his mind that he
was not going to re-enlist when his enlistment was up in 2009,'' Jerry
James Higgins said.
Higgins is survived by his father, mother, Cheryl Higgins,
and his wife, Rachel Higgins.

Harry J Higgins
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Harry Joseph Higgins, 86, of Santa Clarita, Calif., passed away peacefully on
Sunday, July 15, 2007.
He was born on Dec. 10, 1920, in Watertown, Wis., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Higgins. Harry served his country during World War II in the Marine Corps, then came to
California in 1951 to raise his family. He worked for General Motors for 35 years.
After retiring, Harry purchased an RV and indulged his love of travel by traveling all over the United
States. He also loved music, dancing, sports, studying old trains and, most of all, his family. Harry was
such an inspiration to all who knew him. He was very spiritual, always positive, always supportive, and
always the consummate gentleman.
Harry always kept Watertown in his heart and loved to return to the community to enjoy visits with family
and friends.
He is survived by the love of his life, Millie Terranova of Santa Clarita; a son, Stephen (Jan)
Higgins of Santa Clarita; two daughters, Deedra (Steve) Hart of Agoura, Calif., and Geri Higgins of
Sarasota, Fla.; six grandchildren, Shannon Neubert, D.J. (Jean) Ouimette, Aimee Gallagher, Kathrine Hart,
Jeffrey and Jonathan Parkhurst; four great-grandchildren, Sara Gibbons, Cory
Neubert, Maya and Jack Ouimette; one great-great-grandaughter, Tilly; three sisters, Jan (Ken) MacIver of La Canada,
Calif., Ann Phelps of Glendale, Calif., and Virginia (Ben) Sobolesky of Watertown; a brother, Dan Higgins
of Watertown; and many other relatives and friends.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Eleanor Hoppe of Watertown.
Visitation was held at Eternal Valley Mortuary Chapel, 23287 N. Sierra Highway, Newhall, Calif.
A funeral Mass was held July 20 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Newhall.
His grandson, D.J., writes �I always try to ask myself, �What would Grandpa Harry do?' That code of
ethics is a wonderful guide to live by.�

Robert E. "Bob" Higgins Passed away at the age of 84 on May 22, 2006 at the Sutter Hospital, Oakland. Born
in Upton, MA, August 18, 1921, he was the son of Gilbert and Myrtle
Higgins. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1940, served in the Pacific Theater in World War II
and retired as a chief storekeeper in 1956. He was the owner of Oceanic Gifts, Inc., from 1956 until his
death. He was married 41 years to the late Emelie "Millie" Higgins until her death November 1, 2005.
Father of Mary Ann Kessinger, brother of Shirley Lambert, Charlie Higgins and the late
Gilbert Higgins and June Blau along with many nieces, nephews, other
family members and numerous caring friends and business associates. Friends of the family are invited
to attend a Memorial Service at the Colonial Chapel, 2626 High St., Oakland, CA, on June 10, 2006 at
3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

DECATUR HIGGINS.
In the present complex state of modern civilization the purveyor of food for the multitude is
an important factor. The grocer, the baker and the retail dealer in meats are as useful members of
society as the financier and the professional man, even though they are not so widely known. Decatur Higgins, proprietor of the Pioneer
Meat Market, located in the city of Visalia, California, was born on a farm in the state of
Missouri, April 19, 1889. He received a good practical education in the public schools of his native state,
after which he entered the employ of the Waters-Pierce Oil Company of St. Louis. . During the three and a
half years he was with this company he heard much about California, which influenced him to seek his
fortune on the Pacific coast. In 1908 he located in Tulare. Six years later, in 1914, he came to Visalia
and opened the Pioneer Meat Market. His previous experience, his judgment in the selection of meats,
and his well known reputation for fair dealing have enabled him to build up a lucrative business.
While in Tulare Mr. Higgins was married to Miss Mabel Green, a native of that place, who has made
many friends in Visalia. Mr. Higgins is a democrat in his political affiliations, but he is not especially
active in political work. He is a member of the Visalia Rotary Club and belongs to the Masonic
fraternity. During the ten years of his residence in Visalia he has shown a disposition to aid every
movement for the general advancement of the community interests.

JOHN M. HIGGINS
John M Higgins, foreman of the bindery department of the state printing office and a member of the general
assembly of California, is a native of New Jersey, born September 3, 1863.
He pursued his education in the grammar and high schools of San Francisco and was graduated when
seventeen years of age. He then entered upon his business career, by being apprenticed to the
bookbinder's trade under A. Buswell. After the retirement of Mr. Buswell in 1885 Mr. Higgins
purchased the business of his employer, which he conducted under the firm style of J. M. Higgins &
Company until 1889. In that year he sold out and came to Sacramento to accept an appointment in the state
printing office, where he continued until March, 1903, as a journeyman. At that date he was appointed foreman
of the bindery department and is now acting in the latter capacity, his practical and comprehensive
knowledge of the business well qualifying him for the discharge of the duties which devolve upon him in this
connection. Mr. Higgins is a member of the bookbinders' union, No. 35, and he also holds membership relations with the
Benevolent and Protective of Elks and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In his political views he is an
earnest and stalwart Republican, having taken an active interest in local and state politics. He has
labored earnestly for the success of his party and has frequently been a delegate to county and state
conventions. In 1903 he was a member of the thirty-fifth general assembly from the eighteenth
district of California. He has a wide acquaintance among the leading statemen of California as well as in
business circles and merits the high regard in which he is universally held.

Perry HIGGINS, Wells-Fargo railway messenger on the Yosemite Valley railroad, died in the hospital in
Yosemite Wednesday, following an illness from influenza. His two year old daughter passed away a few
hours before his death. Mrs. HIGGINS and another child are also seriously ill in the Yosemite hospital from
the same disease. Mrs. HIGGINS was formerly Miss Mamie BAKER of Mariposa.
