ELLSWORTH
Mary Higgins
Barron, 95, died Dec. 23, 2000, at a Mount Desert Island
hospital. She was born April 30, 1905, in Bar Harbor, the daughter
of J. Murray and Ida (Stover) Higgins.
She was a former
member of the Unison Rebekahs of Bar Harbor.
Mary is survived by
a daughter, Sylvia and her husband, A. Kenneth Potter,
of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Mary Helen and her husband, Robert
Davis, of Ellsworth, Carol and her husband, James
DeWitt Jr., of Ellsworth, Gerry E. and her husband, John
Chipman, of Birch Harbor; nine great-grandchildren, 14
great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter
E. Barron, in 1981; and a grandchild, Robbie T. Davis.
A graveside funeral
service was held Dec. 27, 2000, at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth,
with the Rev. Darlene Springer officiating. Contributions in
Mary�s memory may be made to the Mary Dow Clinic, care of Maine
Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union St., Ellsworth 04605. Arrangements

SEAL COVE
Irene Celia
Savage, born July 6, 1967, in Concord, Mass., the daughter of Walter
and Linda Robbins Higgins Jr. of Seal Cove; beloved mother of
Nichole (14), Matthew (12) and Thomas Savage
(10), all of Seal Cove.
In addition to her
parents and children, Irene is survived by one sister, Laura
Higgins of Taylor, Mich.; maternal grandmother, Ethel Robbins,
paternal grandparents, Walter E. and Leola M. Higgins
Sr., all of Seal Cove; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many
friends.
Irene�s greatest
joy in life was her children. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund will
be established for her children at the Southwest Harbor branch of
the Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Co. A service of remembrance was
held May 22, 2001, at Hill Rest Cemetery, West Tremont. Arrangements

ELLSWORTH and SURRY
Frances Isadora
"Dora" Smith, 91, died Dec. 16, 1999, at an Ellsworth
health-care facility. She was born Nov. 2, 1908, in Surry, the
daughter of Della M. Handy.
She attended the
Surry Methodist Church and was a member of Arbutus Grange No. 456
and the Surry Historical Society. Dora loved children and took care
of them for many years; she was also a caregiver to others who were
less fortunate.
Dora is survived by
a daughter, Juanita Higgins and her husband, Lewis;
one granddaughter, Sherylin L.H. Bouschee and her husband, Rodney,
of Franklin; one grandson, Christopher A. Higgins of
Sullivan; two great-grandchildren, David E. Pinkham Jr. of
Bangor and Bobbi Lee Pinkham of UMO, Orono; nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Llewellyn Smith.
A memorial service
was held Dec. 28, 1999, at the First Congregational Church of
Ellsworth, UCC, with the Rev. James Wood officiating. Interment was
at North Bend Cemetery, Surry. The family suggests that friends who
wish may make contributions in Dora�s memory to the Courtland
Living Center, Court Street, Ellsworth. Arrangements by Jordan

LAMOINE
Elmer C. Davis
Jr., 88, died July 17, 2000, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born
April 10, 1912, in Northeast Harbor, the son of Jennie (Eaton)
and Elmer C. Davis Sr.
He was the former
owner of Associated Builders, Inc., selling to Eugene F. King in
1973. He was a former president of the Ellsworth Lions Club, a
56-year member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM of Ellsworth,
Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor and the Shrine Club. He served on the
board of Meadowview Retirement Homes for 27 years.
He is survived by
his wife of 62 years, June (Bragdon) Davis; one sister, Edith
Davis Higgins; four nephews, David, Kendall, Carroll and Sherwood
Higgins; two nieces, Elizabeth Reaves Herring and Charlotte
Reaves Chillura; also his wife�s two nephews, Merle and
Jasper Bragdon; and niece, Jill Bragdon Murphy and
their families; goddaughter, Ann Lord Gleason; godson, Jake
Markos; and by many kind and loving friends. He was predeceased
by a sister, Dora Davis Reaves.
At his request,
there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at
the convenience of the families. Friends who wish may make donations
in Elmer�s memory to the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, 50 Union

DEER ISLE
Bruce P. Flagg,
50, died June 19, 2000, at a local health-care facility. He was born
April 20, 1950, in Sedgwick, the son of Vance and Eliza
(Moody) Flagg.
He is survived by
two sisters, Hope Young and Jenny Joyce, both of
Stonington; two uncles, Michael Hardy of Stonington, Morton
Higgins and an aunt, Lillian Higgins, both of Ellsworth.
Graveside services
will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Mt. Rest

BLUE HILL
Paul Edwin
Sylvester, 76, died Oct. 17, 2000, at a Blue Hill hospital. He
was born April 13, 1924, in Blue Hill, the son of Leon F. and
Prudence B. (Saunders) Sylvester.
He served in the
U.S. Army during World War II in Japan. Paul started his first
career with his father as a poultry farmer. Later on, he and his
wife, Helen, worked together on the farm for 30 years. In
Paul�s later years, he worked for numerous oil companies
delivering oil. He retired in 1989. He was an extremely avid
baseball fan, who played in his youth and young adult life. He
enjoyed watching his grandchildren play and was the holder of season
tickets for the Dodgers of Vero Beach, Fla. He was a member of the
following organizations: a 53-year member of the Ira Berry Lodge No.
128 AF & AM of Blue Hill, Blanquefort Commandery No. 13 of
Ellsworth, King Solomon Council of Belfast, Acadia Chapter No. 31
R.A.M. of Ellsworth, Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor and the Odd
Fellows of Blue Hill. He was a former trustee of George Stevens
Academy. Paul was a very active member in South Blue Hill community
organizations. He was extremely kind and generous with his time.
Paul is survived by
his beloved wife of 53 years, Helen (Hodgdon) Sylvester;
four daughters�his first daughter, Leona Gray and husband, John,
of Blue Hill and their children, Lydia Gray Garrant and
husband, Steven, Gerald Gray and wife, Rebecca, and Liza
Gray; a second daughter, Linda Sylvester and partner, Thomas
Lynn, of Vero Beach, Fla., and her children, Teresa Higgins
and husband, Michael, and Jennifer King and husband, Heath;
a third daughter, Louise Cole and husband, Allen, of
Blue Hill and children, Seth and Toby Cole; his fourth
daughter, Laverne Redding and husband, Dana, of Calais
and children, Heather, Jason and Brandi Redding; a
very special great-granddaughter, Nicole Higgins; two
brothers, Arthur Saunders and wife, Ann, of Derry, N.H.,
and Stephen Sylvester and wife, Geneva, of Belfast and
both their families. Paul was deeply devoted to his family and will
be greatly missed.
Private
family services were held and interment was at South Blue Hill
Cemetery. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

SURRY
RuthAnn
Ellen Davis, 56, died April 16, 2002, at her home in Surry. She
was born April 1, 1946, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of S. Andrew
Davis Jr. and Bertha M. (Hodgdon) Higgins.
RuthAnn was
actively involved with her children in the Surry and George Stevens
Academy school systems. Her children and grandchildren were the
central part of her life.
She is survived by
her father, and wife, Avis, of Ellsworth; and by her mother
and husband, Elmer Higgins, of Lamoine; four sons, Mike
Gatcomb and wife, Laura, of Blue Hill, Vince, Rick and
Ryan Ramos of Surry; two daughters, Angela Mora and Rebecca
Ramos of Surry; three brothers, Fred Davis and Chuck
Turnbull of Town Hill and Ed Davis of Ellsworth; a
sister, April Connors of Petersburg; three grandchildren, Caleb
Mora, Desiree Gatcomb and Olivia Mora; three
stepgrandchildren, Crystal, Duane and Garrett Carter.
She was predeceased by a son, Teddy Gatcomb; and a daughter, Michelle
Ramos.
A memorial service
will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2002, at the Surry
Methodist Church, with Pastor James E. Blanchette presiding.
RuthAnn�s family would like to extend their thanks and

STONINGTON
Capt. Calvin
"Cal" Lawson, 75, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000,
surrounded by his family at a Blue Hill hospital. He was born Jan.
7, 1925, in Seal Cove, the son of Carl C. and Daisy M.
(Stockbridge) Lawson.
He served in the
U.S. Naval Air Force from 1943 to 1946, stationed in Rhode Island,
California, and Hawaii as an aviation ordinance man, second class.
Throughout his life he worked as a lobster fisherman, seiner,
scalloper, welder and stone cutter. For the last 12 years, he was a
captain and later manager of the Isle Au Haut Boat Co. in
Stonington.
He was a member of
Marine Lodge No. 122 in Deer Isle and American Legion Post No. 102
in Stonington.
Calvin is survived
by his beloved wife of 52 years, Betty (Johnson) Lawson of
Stonington; two sons, Kim Lawson and his wife, Kathie,
of Stonington, Todd Lawson and his wife, Sarah, of
Little Deer Isle; four daughters, Cindy Coombs and her
husband, John, of Stonington, Debby Oliver and her
husband, Ben, of Stonington, Sally Pierce and her
husband, David, of Nobleboro, Trudy Higgins and her
husband, Mark, of Penobscot; 13 grandchildren, Kim Lawson,
Kelly Bartlett, Barry Oliver, Marcie Bishop, Matthew Coombs, Sasha
and Bridgett Konitzky, Jared, Corey and Danielle Brown,
Travis Higgins, Anna and Calvin Lawson; four
great-grandchildren, Blake, Tyler, Reid and Kinsey Lawson
Bartlett; two brothers, Carl Lawson Jr. of Southwest
Harbor and Benjamin Lawson of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Isabel
Forand of New Bedford, Mass., and Helen Butler of Dexter;
a brother-in-law, Neil Johnson and his wife, Bonnie,
of Newburgh; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Boyce of Deer Isle
and Brenda Witham and her husband, Larry, of Sebec;
several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. He was
predeceased by his parents and three sisters, Thelma Garzarelli,
Wilhamine Butler and Dorothea Lawson, and a
brother-in-law, George Boyce.
A celebration of
Calvin�s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the
Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main Street, Stonington, with

Maud Evelyn
Robichaud, 91, died at a Blue Hill hospital, April 15, 2002. She
was born in Bar Harbor, March 12, 1911, daughter of Edwin C.
and Maud E. (Hodgkins) Mitchell. Evelyn was an avid reader.
She is survived by
one brother-in-law, Paul Higgins of Town Hill; 11 nieces and
nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Mary
Louise Higgins, Florence Ober, Grace Norwood; and two
brothers, George and John Mitchell.
A funeral service
will be held 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2002, at Jordan-Fernald, Bar
Harbor Chapel, Eden Street, Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Joseph Daniels
officiating. Interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar
Harbor. The family suggests that if friends desire, they may make
contributions to the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Evelyn�s
memory.

Paul E.
Farnsworth, 76, died at his home April 27, 2001. He was born in
Machias, Feb. 15, 1925, the son of Ulysses and Betsy
(Reynolds) Farnsworth.
Paul loved his
family very much and looked forward to the family gatherings. He
enjoyed collecting model cars, talking, storytelling and socializing
with his friends, as well as fixing lawn mowers.
Paul is survived by
two sons, Joel Farnsworth and his wife, Betty, of
Windsor, Alan Farnsworth of Bucksport; two daughters, Priscilla
Gilley and her husband, George, of Hancock, Linda
Higgins and her husband, Edward, of Bernard; one brother,
Herbert Farnsworth and his wife, Verna, of
Connecticut; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, several
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline;
a daughter, Rebecca; and a brother, Eugene.
A funeral service
was held May 1, 2001, from the Jordan-Fernald Bar Harbor Chapel, 48
Eden St., Bar Harbor, with Pastor Bob Baker officiating. Interment
was at Mountain View Cemetery, Town Hill. The family suggests that

ELLSWORTH
Mary E. Clough,
86, died Aug. 10, 2001, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Nov. 11,
1914, in Ellsworth Falls, the daughter of William Ezra and Anna
Adelia (Googins) Clough.
Mary was a member
of the Union Congregational Church, Ellsworth Falls. She was a
former member and past grand noble of the Nokomis Rebekah Lodge and
was an office manager and secretary of Jordan Funeral Home for many
years.
She shared her
later years with her loving sister, Ella F. Clough, who
predeceased Mary in October 2000. Mary is survived by the family of Ed
and Peggy Youngblood, Leslie Youngblood, Mike, Tammi, and Matthew
Youngblood, all of Bangor; her cousins, Ruth Youngblood
of Milo, Frank Turner of Guilford, Coris Higgins of
Winterport; and special friends and neighbors, Steve Peskoe
and Ernie.
A funeral service
was held Aug. 13, 2001, at the Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin
St., Ellsworth, with Pastor Robert Maddocks officiating. Private
interment will be held at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.

Ruth Agnes
Sargent, 92, died Oct. 3, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care
facility. She was born Dec. 11, 1907, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of
Luray Victor and Edith (Calor) Higgins.
Ruth was a member
of the Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove, and the Eastern Star of Bar
Harbor. She worked for many years with her husband at the Old
Homestead Dairy. She was a charter member of Salsbury Cove Mothers
Club.
Ruth is survived by
a son, Walter "Bud" Sargent III and his wife, Ann,
of Bar Harbor; a daughter, Barbara Gray and her husband, Brad,
of Bar Harbor; five grandchildren, Wally and Ted Gray
of Bar Harbor, Glen Sargent of Lincolnville, William
Sargent of Oak Point and SueAnn Sargent of Lamoine; six
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth was
predeceased by her husband, Walter W. Sargent Jr.
Graveside
services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Hillside
Cemetery, Hulls Cove, with the Rev. Robert Raymond officiating.

SOMESVILLE
Daniel Somes
Smith, 88, died Jan. 26, 2000, in Somesville. He was born Nov.
2, 1911, in Somesville, the son of Hollis and Georgia (Somes)
Smith.
Daniel was a member
of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Town Hill and a former
member of the Sportsman�s Alliance of Tacoma, Wash. Daniel enjoyed
writing for fun. He was a wonderful poet and wrote a book of poetry,
as well as writing Fin and Feather short stories. Daniel loved to
fish and hunt and he was a great reader, especially Westerns.
He is survived by
his beloved wife of 33 years, Rosemary (Higgins) Smith; two
sons, Norris Smith and wife, Donna, of Bremerton,
Wash., and Jeffrey Smith and friend, Sue, of Keizer,
Ore.; two daughters, Denice Fenno and husband, Lincoln,
of Bar Harbor and Sandra Smith of Tacoma, Wash.; five
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service of
remembrance was held Jan. 29, 2000, at the Pentecostal Lighthouse in
Town Hill, with Pastor John Churchill officiating. Spring interment
will be at Brookside Cemetery, Mount Desert. If friends desire, they
may make contributions to Hospice of Hancock County, Box 224,

BAR HARBOR
George C. McKay
Jr., 80, died March 25, 2002, at MDI Hospital.
He was born July
19, 1921, in Bar Harbor, the son of George C. and Ethel
(Thomas) McKay Sr.
He graduated from
Bar Harbor High School and attended Boston University. George served
in the Army Air Corps as 1st Lt. from 1942-1945.
He was a member of
the Bar Harbor Masonic Lodge No. 185.
George worked at
the Criterion Theatre, at Hinckley�s Boat Yard after the war, and
as an independent photographer until moving to The Jackson
Laboratory. He was head of the photo department at Jackson
Laboratory and owned and operated McKay Cottages from 1970-1987.
George was an
outdoorsman who especially enjoyed bird hunting and sailing.
He is survived by
his son, George McKay III of Mount Desert; a daughter, Catherine
and her husband, Michael James of Bar Harbor; a
brother-in-law, Donald Higgins and wife, Betty of
Ellsworth; a sister, Dr. Marguerite Dwyer of Bangor; two
grandchildren, Christopher James and wife, Amy of Bar
Harbor and Thomas James and fianc�e, Susan McLaughlin
of Northeast Harbor; one niece, three nephews, and several cousins.
He will be sorely missed by his special friends, Abbe and Bagheera.
A memorial service
will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002, at St.
Saviour�s Church in Bar Harbor, with the Rev. Edwin A. Garrett III

�Posie� A. Norwood Griffin, 75, died Jan. 8, 2002, at Mount
Desert Island Hospital. She was born in Seal Harbor, Sept. 24, 1926.
She attended Bar
Harbor High School. Her favorite hobbies were beano and playing
cards.
She was predeceased
by her husband of 53 years, Karl R. Griffin Sr. of Bar
Harbor; her parents, Lloyd and Isabelle (Higgins)
Norwood of Town Hill; stepmother, Janett (Farnsworth) Norwood;
sister, Elsie Potter of Berwick; brother, Harvey Norwood
of Town Hill; and granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Griffin of Bar
Harbor.
She is survived by
her seven children, Patricia Otten and her husband, Jim,
of Arizona, Karl �Whitey� Griffin Jr. and his wife, the
Rev. Mary-Carol, of Bar Harbor, Mary Hennessy and her

William Harley
Brown, 84, died April 17, 2000, at his home. He was born April
27, 1915, the son of Leon Higgins and Alta (Quinn) Brown,
at Ellsworth Falls, where he lived his whole life.
He was a graduate
of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1934, and attended Maine School
of Commerce. William was a forester and a farmer and enjoyed
gardening. He attended the Ellsworth Falls Congregational Church and
was a director of Hancock County Creamery for 11 years. He was a
life member of Lygonia Masonic Lodge No. 40 AF & AM and the
Order of Eastern Star, Irene Chapter No. 97, as well as Mariaville
Grange No. 441.
William is survived
by his wife of 62 years, Rhoda (Carr) Brown of Ellsworth
Falls; a son, Howard O. Brown and his wife, Evelyn, of
Westminster, S.C.; a brother, Lincoln Brown of Ellsworth; a
sister, Jeanette Brown of Middlebury, Vt.; seven nieces and
nephews.

Johnson, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at a Deer Isle
health-care facility, surrounded by her loving family. She was born
in Manset, March 26, 1910, the daughter of John T. and
Dorothy A. (Russell) LeMoine. Harriet married Oscar L.
Johnson Sept. 8, 1928, on Swan�s Island.
She is survived by
her children, Barbara Boyce of Stonington, Betty Lawson
and her husband, Calvin, of Stonington, Brenda Witham
and her husband, Larry of Sebec, and Neal Johnson and
his wife, Bonnie, of Newburgh; 14 grandchildren, Ted,
Jeffrey, George, and Cathy Boyce, Becky Gray, Cindy Coombs,
Kim Lawson, Debby Oliver, Sally Pierce, Trudy Higgins, Todd Lawson,
Tammy Campbell, Melissa Beaton, and Sandi Johnson; 29
great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ethel
Robbins and her husband, James; and many nieces, nephews,
and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband; two brothers, Everett
and George LeMoine; a sister, Violet Sadler; a
grandson, Jim Campbell; and a son-in-law, George Boyce.
She was a beautiful lady with a true joy of life, which was
reflected in the great love she shared with her children and many
grandchildren. We will each miss her, and hold her in our hearts
always.

Sylvester, 83, died April 2, 2002, at a Blue Hill hospital. She
was born April 8, 1918, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Walter W.
and Flora L. (Duffy) Hodgdon.
Helen graduated
from George Stevens Academy. She was a member of Eastern Star and
the South Blue Hill Ladies Public Improvement Society and attended
the Blue Hill Baptist Church. Helen had worked at the Barnacle
Lobster Restaurant and Fairwinds Florist and was also in the poultry
business. She enjoyed baking and doing craftwork.

Brooksville and their children, Lydia Gray Garrant and
husband, Steven, Gerald Gray and wife, Rebecca and Liza
Gray; Linda Sylvester and her partner, Thomas Lynn

Klausky, 88, died at an MDI health-care facility, July 12, 2000.
She was born in Sorrento, March 3, 1912, daughter of Granville S.
and Ida (Stover) Higgins.
Miriam was a
bookkeeper for her husband�s lobster business for many years. She
loved to play the piano and organ as well as being an avid golfer.
She also supported many local organizations. Miriam was a member of
the MDI Lioness Club, the Manset Gleaners, Cranberry Island Ladies
Aid and was a member of the Manset Congregational Church.
Miriam is survived
by her husband of 67 years, Joseph L. Klausky of Southwest
Harbor; three sons, Wallace Klausky of Venice Fla., Joseph
Klausky Jr. of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Allan Klausky of
Southwest Harbor; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews. Also a special friend, Nancy Bulger.
She was predeceased by a son, Michael, in 1999.

78, died Aug. 1, 2001, at a Bangor hospital. She was born April 16,
1923, at Whitensville, Mass., the daughter of Walter E. and Mary
(Higgins) Barron.
Sylvia was an
office secretary for the Maine Sea Coast Mission for four years and
was an associate clerk for Maine District Court in Ellsworth for 24
years. She was a mother adviser for Rainbow Girls of Ellsworth, a
member of Irene Chapter No. 97, Order of the Eastern Star, and a
Girl Scout leader. She was also a member of the Sunshine Club of
Anah Temple Shrine and a member of the United Baptist Church of
Ellsworth. For the past 11 years, she and her husband, Ken, have
enjoyed their winters at New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
She is survived by
her husband of 57 years, Ken; three daughters, MaryHelen
and her husband, Robert E. Davis, of Ellsworth, Carol and
her husband, James DeWitt, of Ellsworth, and Geraldine
and her husband, John L. Chipman Sr., of Birch Harbor; nine
grandchildren, Bonnie Mouland, Terri Bruch, Kenneth Davis, Troy
Davis, Wesley DeWitt, Karen Hussey, Debra Worden, Laurie Floyd
and John L. Chipman Jr.; 14 great-grandchildren, many nieces
and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and a grandson, Robbie

Charles Melvin
Colwell, 76, died Dec. 21, 2001, at an Ellsworth hospital. He
was born June 21, 1925, in Hancock, a son of Emma S. (McCrellis) and
Charles Stuart Colwell I.
He was educated at
Hancock schools, Higgins Classical Institute and Maine Central
Institute. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1943 and
Wentworth Institute in 1946. From 1946-1952 he worked for
Consolidated Lobster Co. as port engineer, traveling the coast from
Massachusetts to Canada. In 1952, he founded Colwell Diesel Service
and Garage. For 44 years he was a dealer for International Trucks.
Charles served as selectman for the Town of Hancock for 12 years and
on the school board for three years. He enjoyed his work, his family
and his homestead.
He is survived by
his beloved wife of 50 years, Vivian Nash Colwell of Hancock;
two sons, Charles Stuart Colwell II and his wife, Mimi,
of Ellsworth, and George Wayne Colwell and his wife, Brenda,
of Hancock; one daughter, Merredith Ellen Colwell of
Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Gladys C. Donahue of Bangor and Caroline
C. Parkhurst of Sun City Center, Fla.; five grandchildren, Daniel
Charles Colwell, Emily Ruth Colwell, Elaine Anne Colwell, Kimberly
Jean Colwell, and Katherine Lee Colwell; and many nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, G. Albert,
Arthur E., and Alfred H. Colwell; and one sister, Mildred
C. Stevens.

Joseph Andrew
Linscott, 71, died Nov. 30, 2000, at Collier�s Health Care
Center in Ellsworth, following a lengthy illness. He was born July
22, 1929, in Lamoine, the son of Merle Francis and Josephine
(Luchini) Linscott.
He
attended Ellsworth schools and graduated from Ellsworth High School
in 1947. He served in the Navy from 1948 until 1952. He was a Navy
veteran of the Korean War, having served on a destroyer off the
coast of Korea. On Oct. 25, 1954, Joe married Christine Anne Davis
of Ellsworth and was a devoted and loving husband, father and
grandfather. From 1956 until 1980, Joe owned and operated Joe�s
Mobil Service Station on High Street. His business prospered and was
built on customer service. He was then employed by Ellsworth Carwash
until he retired in 1990, due to illness.
Joe was an avid
sports fan. He was a coach/player for a men�s softball team for
several years, an avid golfer and bowler. He and his wife won
individual city bowling championships in the same year during the
sixties. They also won a husband/wife golf championship in the 80s
at Bar Harbor Golf Course. As most people in the area know, Joe was
a diehard Yankee fan and enjoyed Celtics basketball.
In addition to his
wife of 46 years, Christine, Joe is survived by a daughter, Victoria
Montgomery and her husband, Michael, two granddaughters, Lynn
Marie and Ashley Elizabeth Montgomery, all of Hollis; a
sister, Rita Linscott and her husband, Sidney, of
Ellsworth; many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as several
aunts and uncles; and a godson, Andrew Joseph Higgins. He was
predeceased by a sister, Teresa Sargent.
A Mass of Christian
Burial was held Dec. 4, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church,
Ellsworth, with the Rev. Leo James Michaud officiating. Interment
was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Ellsworth. Contributions in Joe�s

Winonah Chapman
Young, 85, died at the Ellsworth hospital Nov. 16, 2000. She was
born at Mount Desert, June 28, 1915, the daughter of Alden
and Vivienne (Havey) Havey.
She graduated from
the Somes Sound School. She had worked for the Asticou Inn in
Northeast Harbor as a young woman and the Fraley Cottage before it
was purchased by the Miller family and continued there for more than
30 years, retiring due to her health this spring. She attended the
United Baptist Church in Ellsworth.
She is survived by
her granddaughter, Janice, and her husband, Girard Pinkham,
and a special great-granddaughter, Lisa, all of Surry; one
sister, Wilda Higgins of Ellsworth; her daughter-in-law, Laverne
of Ellsworth; many nieces and nephews. Her cat, Rusty, will also
miss her. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest F. Young,
in 1977; her son, Austin Young, in 1991; and by an infant
son.

Julia Bryant
Smith, 86, died March 25, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care
facility. She was born Sept. 16, 1913, in the Kennebec District of
Machias, the daughter of Samuel W. and Effie (Morse)
Bryant. Julia was the last of 10 children.
Julia graduated
from Washington State Normal School. She was encouraged by her
sister, Ruby, to move to the Somesville area, where she worked for
Mrs. John Somes. Julia later worked for the United States Postal
Service for 35 years, retiring in 1972.
Julia was a member
of the Somesville Union Meeting House UCC. Her faith and conviction
was an important part of her life. During her years in Somesville,
she was a strong supporter, active member and faithful parishioner
of her church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star No. 20, the Somesville Sewing Circle, the Somesville Library,
and the Women�s Literary Club of Mount Desert.
Her immediate
family, niece Elaine H. Reddish and husband, Norris,
survive her. She was a great-aunt to Julianna L. Reddish-Smith
and husband, Jeffery, Ryan N. Reddish and wife, Susan.
In the last years of her life she was able to enjoy the company of
her great-grandnieces, Courtney Higgins Reddish and Delaney
Victoria Smith. She is survived by a niece, Dencie Fenno of
Bar Harbor, and many other special nieces, nephews, their children
and grandchildren. She is survived by many special friends whom she
kept in contact with, including Guy Nason. Julia was
predeceased by her husband, Hollis M. Smith in 1968.

Lurvey, 90, died Oct. 5, 2000, at a Bar Harbor health-care
facility. She was born March 9, 1910, in Roxbury, Mass., the
daughter of Ezra W. and Mary Elizabeth (Donahue) Lurvey.
Charlotte graduated
from high school in Roxbury, Mass., and went to secretarial school.
She worked for the Lawrence Robinson Agency for 50 years. She was a
member of the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church and Rowena
Rebekah Lodge for many years. Charlotte was also an avid knitter.
She is survived by
her niece, Terri Lanpher of Seal Cove; a nephew, Anthony
Higgins of Fryeburg; two close friends, Carolyn Dolliver
and Gladys Townsend.
A graveside
memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at Mt.
Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with the Rev. Joseph Palmer
officiating. Contributions in Charlotte�s memory may be made to
the Southwest Harbor Congregational Church, High Road, Southwest
Harbor 04679. Arrangements by Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.
