Civil War pension records show Henry H. Higgins received an invalid's pension (Application # 516752 & Certificate # 467390) on June 28,1884 for his service in Company "G" 11th Maine Infantry. He died June 20, 1910. His wife Nettie E. Higgins received a widows pension August 1,1910. (Application # 946659 & Certificate # 717992)

Source: Congressional serial set, Issue 5843 By United States. Government Printing Office

S. 9433. Nettie E. Higgins, of South Hancock, Me., is the widow of Henry H. Higgins, late private of Company G, Eleventh Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry.

Claimant's husband enlisted October 14, 1861, and served faithfully throughout the Civil War, being honorably discharged February 2, 1866. He obtained pension at the bureau under the act of June 27, 1890, at $12 per month, which pension he drew until his death June 20, 1910.

Claimant was married to the soldier August 28, 1887, and had by him one child, who died in the spring of 1909. She obtained a divorce from the soldier in October, 1892, on account of his intemperate habits. They were remarried, however, August 13, 1894, and she was his wife until the date of his death.

Solely and entirely because her last marriage occurred subsequent to June 27, 1890, she is denied a pension at the bureau. She was his wife continuously for about 23 years, with the exception of two years from 1892 to 1894, and she is now his widow and was the mother of his child.

The claimant is upward of 57 years of age, in poor health and in very poor circumstances, being left without property or other means of support. She had two brothers in the Army during the Civil War, both of whom were killed in battle.

Your committee are of opinion that she is equitably entitled to a pension and we recommend $12 per month, which is the amount she would have received had her claim been allowed at the bureau.
