(From the) New Haven News: Word was received yesterday of the death of Charles Higgins at his home in Maysville, Indiana, Tuesday January 3.
The funeral will take place Friday at 1 o'clock. It was the request of the deceased to be buried with the honors of a soldier, by the G. A. R., and his widow has requested Jesse Adams post, G. A. R., to take charge of the services. They have arranged to go and attend the last sad rite, the burial of a dead comrade. Charles Higgins joined Company "B" *, Forty-Fourth I. V. I. (Indiana Volunteer Infantry) in 1861, at the age of 14, and served faithfully for more than four years, being discharged in 1865. It is desired that all soldiers turn out. This includes soldiers of the late war.

I have the pension records for George Patrick Higgins Company B, 7th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers 1861-1864 near Winchester, Indiana.
Enlisted date is 30 Aug 1861 private infantry, discharge 20 Sep 1864. There is a letter from the adjutant generals office dated 7 Nov 1874 for the pension. I believe that the assistant Adjutant General that signed the document is J P Walther or Martin (it is difficult to read).

Isaac Higgins, of Company F, was captured by having his bridle rein seized by a rebel cavalryman near the river bank some distance below the ford. While being led away captive, his pistol, cocked, was held by him under his coat cape, and in an unguarded moment he shot his captor, whirled his horse and leaped into the river and escaped.

Civil War pension records show Isaac Higgins received an invalid's pension June 5, 1876 (Application # 220450 and Certificate # 144925). It notes his death as April 24, 1925 at Brooksburg, Jefferson County, Indiana.

Bridget Higgins (nee Logan), widow of James Higgins, of Company "B" 15th Indiana Infantry, filed for a pension for the death of her husband on January 28, 1863, he died of Chronic Diarhea at General Hospital # 4 at Louisville, Kentucky on January.19, 1863. They had been married January 25, 1854 in Bertrand Township, Berrien County, Michigan. They had two childrem; Mary Higgins , born April 15, 1856 & Anastasia Higgins, born March 3, 1860. On September 9, 1914, she was living at 738 Cleveland, Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana. The pension bureau notes Bridget;s death date as May 13, 1918. The pension file notes her birth as October 7, 1840 in ireland.

Dorcas Higgins (nee Lafferty), then a residebt of Kick's Church, Martin County, Indiana, filed for a widow's pension on October 7, 1867. Her husband was James W. Higgins who was a 1st Lieutenant (Later a Captain) in Company "K" 49th Indiana Infantry. He was injured by a tree limb falling on him near Proctor, Kentucky on September 21, 1862. The limb broke 2 of his ribs causing hemorrhages that eventually took his life on February 23, 1866. She married him on April 9, 1843 at Orange County, Indiana. The marriage was performed by David Osborn, a Minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The children of this marriage, who are under the age of 16, are; John L. Higgins, born February 18, 1854; Sarah E. Higgins, born July 17, 1856; Nancy J. Higgins born June 30, 1859; James E. Higgins born October 10, 1861 and William F. Higgins born August 6, 1865. She later moved to Lebo, Kansas. Dorcas Higgins was dropped from pension rolls after her death on May 19, 1908.

Sarah Higgins (nee Martin), widow of John W. Higgins who was a private in Company "A" 47th Indiana Infantry filed for a pension on February 9, 1863. She was then a resident of Hartford Township, Adams County Indiana.
She married John on November 1, 1861. They had no children.
John W. Higgins died August 16, 1862, from a gunshot wound to the head that he received during an attack by guerrillas on August 11, 1862, while he was guarding cotton near Helena Arkansas.
His description; Age 20 at enlistment, 5 ft 71/2 in tall, Light complexion, Grey eyes, Brown hair, a farmer by occupation.

POW records show that he was captured at James City, Va on January 27, 1864 and was confined at Richmond, Va on January 29, 1864. Transferred to Americus, Ga on March 14, 1864. Confined at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was admitted to hospital there on July 2, 1864 where he died on same day of dysentery.

Her maiden name was Mary Malinda Eatons . They had a son named William Alexander Higgins who was born January 29, 1861.
She states her husband died of starvation and exposure at Libby Prison in Virginia. Official records show he actually died at the prison at Andersonville Georgia on July 2, 1864.

She Mary M. Higgins) later married Bowman Hess on September 17, 1865 at Ripley County, Indiana. Left him for reason of cruelty.
She (Mary M. Hess) later married Joseph Butler on March 19, 1872 at Jennings County, Indiana. Joseph left her for reason unknown.
Assuming after ten years of separation and learning of Mr. Butler having remarried, she got married to Hugh Foley on June 3rd, 1882. Mr Foley later drowned at Bedford, Indiana. Date unknown.
She (Malinda Foley) later married Samuel Lutz on August 12, 1890. She divorced him in 1907. She did not remarry. She died August 16, 1913.

Mary Carr applied for a pension for the loss of her son on March 27, 1868. Her son Richard H. Higgins died of Chronic Diarrhea on September 20, 1862 at Manchester, Kentucky. He was also buried there. Mary Carr had previously been married to George Higgins on December 3, 1837. George Higgins died on April 24, 1842. She was later married to Moses Carr on November 26, 1850. Moses Carr died on February 24, 1867 of slow consumption. On September 15, 1873 while living in Cook County, Illinois she married Aaron Amos.

Richard Higgins had enrolled on August 23, 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. He was mustered in on September 16, 1861 as a Corporal into Company "I" 33rd Indiana Infantry for 3 years service.

On August 9, 1865 Margaret Higgins (nee Hess), age 49, applied for a widow's pension for the loss of her Husband Thomas Higgins. She at the time was a resident of Liberty Township, Parke County, Indiana. Thomas Higgins was a Private in Company "A" 85th Indiana Infantry. He died of Chronic diarrhea at the hospital at Bridgeport, Alabama on May 9, 1864. Thomas and Margaret were married on February 3, 1857 at Parker County, Indiana. Thomas Higgins had previously been married to Nancy Jane Sanderson on May 20, 1850 at Parke, County, Indiana.
Thomas and Nancy Jane had 3 children; Henry A. Higgins, born May 10, 1851; Mary E. Higgins, born January 11, 1853; Joseph B. Higgins, born March 23, 1853. All were born at Parke County, Indiana. Nancy Jane Higgins died March 23, 1856.

Higgins, William O., enlisted in Company I, 71st Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry August 1862- afterwards changed to 6th Indiana Cavalry, was in the battle of Richmond, Kentucky in which battle the Union forces being outnumbered and flanked broke in confusion, General Nelson, by whom the Union troops were commanded, was not on the field at the beginning of the engagement, but came up just in time to meet the retreating forces under his command and with threats and curses, with drawn sword, attempted to rally troops and dis so, Mr. Higgins receiving two strokes of the General's sword in common with numerous others who were dealt with in like manner; was captured, paroled and exchanged, captured a second time in a cavalry fight in Kentucky, was in the Macon raid in the rear of Atlanta, and is still in the service (May 1865).Son of John J. Civil War pension index shows William O. Higgins received an invalids pension May 7, 1883 for his service in 6th & 41st (also 71st) Volunteers.  (Application # 482548 & Certificate # 311254) in Indiana. Pension records show his date of death as October 9, 1925 at Halton, Indiana.
