Feb. 9th, 1867, to rank from Oct. 4th, 1862, in recognition of distinguished gallantry displayed by him at the battle of Corinth, Miss., where after twenty-seven of the cannoniers had been killed or wounded and the enemy had captured four of the guns of the Battery, and after the order to fall back had been given, Corporal Higgins, assisting a sergeant in charge, loaded his gun with a double charge of canister and fired in front of the captured guns into the flank of the enemy who were rapidly forming in line for a further advance, doing fearful execution and checking the advance until our second line of battle could complete its formation

Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on February 03 1862 in Company F, 17th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Received a disability discharge on August 25 1862. 

Civil War pension index shows Roger Higgins' widow, Elmira Higgins, received a pension (Application # 15473 & Certificate # 4450) on March 19, 1863 for her husbands service in Company "F", 17th Wisconsin Infantry. A pension for a minor was also granted on May 25, 1866. (Application # 127273 & Certificate # 104480)

A pension was applied for on behalf of the minor children of Roger Higgins, who was a Private in Company "F" 17th Wisconsin Infantry. He died of chronic diarrhea on September 9th, 1862 at his residence in LaPrairie, Wisconsin. His discharge papers state the following personal information; He was born in Ireland, As of August 25, 1862, he is listed as 48 years old, 5 ft 8 in tall, Fair complexion, Blue eyes, and had light hair.
A marriage record in this file states; On January 31st, 1848 at the Church of the Mission at Dunham, Montreal, Canada a marriage was performed between Roderick Higgins, a resident of Farham, who was a widower of the late Bridget Murphy, and Elmire (Mary) Jasmin, who was the daughter of Charles Jasmin and Marie Masson. The service was performed by a priest named B.J. LeClaire.

Of the marriage of Roger (Roderick) Higgins and Bridget Murphy was born six children. One of which was Katherine (Kate) Higgins. Kate's affidavit states that her mother Bridget Higgins died in February of 1847.

Of the marriage of Roger and Elmire Higgins the following children were born;

After Mary Higgins died at LaPrairie, Wisconsin on February 14, 1865, Thomas Rooney was appointed guardian of the children.

Higgins was slightly wounded in the leg.
