FRANCIS WESLEY HIGGINS, M.D.  February 7, 1857 - December 18,1903

Dr. Francis Wesley Higgins was the son of a Methodist minister, and was born in Plymouth, Chenango Co., N. Y., February 7, 1857. After he was fourteen years of age he supported himself by farm work, clerking and teaching country schools until prepared to practice medicine. He was educated in the public schools, at Cazenovia seminary and Colgate academy, Hamilton, N. Y., where he displayed marked ability. Before his graduation he was for two years principal of the McGrawville academy.

He studied medicine with Dr. H. C. Hendrick, at McGrawville, and attended medical lectures at the University of Michigan and the medical department of the University of the City of New York. He was graduated from the latter institution in 1881, and began the practice of medicine in that same year at Truxton, N. Y. Here he remained for four years and a half, and then moved to Chemung, N. Y., where he practiced for a year and a half, and then removed to Cortland, in the same state, where he resided till the date of his death, December 18, 1903.

On November 26, 1879, he was married to Miss Kittie M. Smith, of McGrawville, N. Y., who, with three sons and a daughter, survive him.

Dr. Higgins was prepared for special work on diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat by attendance at post-graduate schools and hospitals in New York, Philadelphia and London. He was also an accomplished surgeon, being the pioneer in abdominal surgery in his vicinity, and long one of the surgical staff of the Cortland Hospital. He was a careful and conscientious student of medicine, an active worker in the local scientific society and a public-spirited Christian citizen, active in all that concerned the welfare of the community in which he lived.

He was a member of the Cortland County Medical Society, of which he was for several years the secretary, and of which he had also been president. He was also a member of the New York State Medical Association and at the time of his death president of the Third District Branch and a member of the Committee on Arrangements. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Medical Association of Central New York.

Dr. Higgins had been a member of this Society only since 1898, but was deeply interested in it and his untimely death is a source of keen regret

Dr. Francis Wesley Higgins dropped dead in his office December 18, 1903, at 10 A. M., after having made his usual morning professional calls. He was taken without warning, save experiencing a few tinges of pain in the region of the heart, some minutes before his loyal and manly spirit took its flight.

Dr. Higgins was the son of a Methodist minister, and was born in Plymouth, Chenango County, N. Y., February 7, 1857. After he was 14 years of age he supported himself by farm work, clerking and teaching country schools until prepared to practice medicine. He was educated at the public schools, at Cazenovia Seminary and Colgate Academy, Hamilton, where he displayed marked ability. Before his graduation he was for two years principal of the McGrawville Academy.

He studied medicine with Dr. H. C. Hendrick, at McGrawville. It was fortunate for Dr. Higgins to be associated with so genial and thorough a physician as Dr. Hendrick, whose influence and counsel helped to fashion his life. He also attended medical lectures at Michigan University, Ann Arbor, and the medical department of the University of the City of New York. He was graduated from the latter institution in 1881, and began the practice of medicine in that same year with the late Dr. Judson C. Nelson, of Truxton. For four and a half years he remained in Truxton, and then moved to Chemung, Chemung County, where he practiced for a year and a half, and in the spring of 1887 came to Cortland, which has since been his home.

On November 26, 1879, Dr. Higgins was married to Miss Kittie M. Smith, of McGrawville, N. Y. Four children were born to them R. Paul, now a medical student in Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Md.; Max S., a student at Cornell University; George H. and Winifred, who are students at home.

He prepared himself for special work in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat by spending some time in post-graduate schools and hospitals in New York, Philadelphia and London.

Dr. Higgins was a member of the Cortland County Medical Society, and was for several years its secretary, and was also its president. He was a member of the New York State Medical Association, and at the time of his death President of the Third District Branch and a member of the Committee on Arrangements. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Medical Association of Central New York.

He was sought for in council outside his own city. He was philanthropic in his work, bringing to the Cortland Hospital its first patient. He had been one of the surgical staff since the hospital was organized, and was fully prepared in surgery, being the pioneer abdominal surgeon of the county. He was a most careful and conscientious student of the science of medicine, and his loss will be greatly felt in the community in which he lived and worked.

He was at one time President of the village, being elected in 1895 on a reform ticket. He was one of the organizers of the Cortland Science Club, and for the first two years its president, and from the start has been one of its Advisory Board.

The funeral of Dr. F. W. Higgins, which was held in the First Methodist Church, at 2.30 o'clock, Monday, December 21st, was one of the largest ever held in Cortland. No one was present through curiosity. Every one came as a friend to pay the last tribute to a loving friend, a faithful physician and a thoroughly whole souled Christian man. The large concourse not only packed the auditorium to the doors, but filled the corridors, the overflow even extending down into the Sunday-school room. Some idea of the number present may be obtained from the fact that it took nearly an hour for the friends to view the remains and pass out. He was laid away in Cortland Rural Cemetery, at the going down of the sun.

MEMORIALS.

At a meeting of the Cortland County Medical Association, held at the York Hotel Friday evening, the following memorial tribute was adopted:

A great sorrow has fallen upon the medical profession of Cortland County, in the sudden death of Dr. F. W. Higgins.

In order that we may pay a slight measure of justice to his memory, we, the members of the Cortland County Medical Association, put upon record our high and unqualified appreciation of his worth as a man, his ability and attainments as a physician, and his loyalty as a member of this society of which he was one of the founders. His energy and progressive scientific spirit were an inspiration to those of us who were intimately associated with him. His activity in the community and his deep interest in all public affairs, were some of his estimable characteristics. We could not help feeling that he was ambitious, but always from a desire for higher attainments and not from a mercenary motive.

"For even as we knew him, smiling still,
Somewhere, beyond all earthly ache or ill,
He waits, with the old welcome. Just as when
We met him smiling, we will meet again."

We, the members of the Cortland County Medical Association now convened, do sincerely condole with his afflicted wife and children, upon whom this great sorrow has so unexpectedly fallen, and we offer them our heartfelt sympathy. Because of the respect in which we hold the memory of Dr. Higgins, this memorial shall be recorded in the secretary's book of the Association, a copy of it sent to the bereaved family, and also printed in the city papers.

Whereas, The Supreme Ruler of the Universe has received from earthly life Dr. Francis Wesley Higgins, an honored member of the Cortland County Medical Society, taking him from his labors, his friends and family, while still in the prime of his years, and in the midst of a most useful career, that this sad event brings to each of us the sense of a personal loss, the rupture of ties made very close by professional and friendly association, therefore, be it

Resolved, That in the death of Dr. Higgins is sustained the loss of one of the most useful, energetic, intelligent, and capable members of the Cortland County Medical Society; That while his demise brings desolation and sorrow to his home and family, and the community mourn for him as one who was, but is not; comfort cometh in the possession of loving memories to those who came close "to him in life or profited by his skill and service.

Resolved, That the sympathy of this society be extended to the bereaved family of our deceased associate, remembering that while his death brings desolation and sorrow to his home, there remain loving memories in the hearts of his friends and those of the community that knew him well.

Resolved, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of Dr. Higgins, and also that they be engrossed in the records of the society.

The end of an earthly career has come. It came with startling sadness. Life ceased at its meridian. Patient years of toil and study had built for him a place in the heart and confidence of the community and of his fellow-workers in his chosen profession. He had energy plus. Work to him was akin to recreation. But the inevitable came. He is gone and we mourn for him.

Edward F. Higgins, who is engaged in the conduct of coach, livery and sale stables, at Rochester, was born in this city May 7. 1861, his parents being Timothy G. and Mary (Powers) Higgins, the former a native of Ireland and the latter of Canada. The father came to Rochester in his youth and resided here for about forty years, after which he removed to Hamilton, Ontario, where he now resides. He was "the first man to run a public vehicle in Rochester, on Buffalo street, now West Main street, and also on Lake avenue, conducting his business before there were any street cars. He also ran a stage to the camp here during the Civil war and was the pioneer stage man of Rochester. He likewise engaged in milling for a number of years and later turned his attention to the wholesale butcher business, being thus connected with several business enterprises which were an element in the city's growth and development. His wife died in June, 1881. They were the parents of eight children, six of whom are living: William; Edward F.; Jane; George, a blacksmith of Rochester ; Florence; and Henry. One son, John, was killed by the cars in Buffalo.
Edward F. Higgins was reared in the city of Rochester and was educated in the public schools. He afterward worked as an employee in a wholesale butchering business and later in a coaching business. Seeing opportunities for himself, in 1883 he established an enterprise of his own in a small way, at No. 35 Atkinson street, and his patronage rapidly increased until in April, 1899, it necessitated his removal to larger quarters. He then opened a stable at his present location, where he has since remained, and he now owns this property, ninety-nine by one hundred and sixty feet, and another place, sixty-six by one hundred and sixty feet. Mr. Higgins has one of the best equipped livery barns in the city. He has the latest vehicles of every kind, including everything from a one-passenger vehicle to those which will carry fifty passengers, and keeps on hand all the time from one hundred and twenty-five to one hundred and fifty head of horses, all of which are good animals. His patronage now is very extensive, making his business profitable and he deserves much credit for what he has accomplished, for ho had no assistance when he started out in life.

Mr. Higgins was married April 11, 1882, to "Miss Bridget Slyncs, of Oswego, New York, and they have two daughters, Alice and Emily. Mr. Higgins is a member of the Rochester Club. He has many friends in the city who admire him for his business success and for his business integrity, and his life is proof of what may he accomplished when one has determination and is not afraid of hard work.

RICHARD HUTCHINGS  HIGGINS

Richard Hutchings Higgins was born in Meade County, Kentucky, October 13, 1869. He was educated in the public schools of Louisville, Kentucky, and at the age of thirteen years left school and entered the employ of the Citizens National Bank of Louisville, Kentucky, where he remained for six years, when (in 1888) he accepted the position of Cashier in the private banking house of Clifton Rodes Barrett & Co., where he remained until 1890, resigning in that year on account of ill health. During the year 1891, he again became associated with the Citizens National Bank of Louisville, and afterwards became Cashier of the First National Bank of Middleborough, Kentucky, and Treasurer of the Louisville Hotel Company of Louisville.

In February, 1893, Mr. Higgins went to New York and entered the service of J. W. Henning, of the New York Stock Exchange firm of J. W. Henning & Company. In August of that year, he resigned and accepted a position in one of the leading banking and brokerage houses in New York City�that of the firm of Harvey Fisk & Sons, and on January 1, 1900, was admitted into partnership.

On May 2, 1905, he became a Director of the Phoenix National Bank of New York City, and on January 9, 1906, was elected a Director of The First National Bank of Scranton.

Mr. Higgins, on October 15, 1895, married Letitia Shelby Holloway, of Louisville, Kentucky. One child, a daughter, Rhoda Anderson Higgins, was born to them.

My name is Kathleen Higgins formerly of Dutchess County NY. My father was George Robert Higgins of Teresa NY. He was born to Louise Bacon and George W. Higgins on Aug 28, 1918 and died June 18. 2008. His father died in the same year, I know his mother remarried and had several children but we never heard from them so I don't know who they are. I know there was a half sister in illinois but I have no idea where. I welcome any contact with people who may have known any family members.

George Higgins
WASSAIC, NY - George R. Higgins, 89, a longtime resident of Wassaic, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at New Milford Hospital, New Milford, CT. Mr. Higgins was a safety officer at Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY for 25 years and later worked as a physical therapy assistant for 12 years, retiring in May 1977. After his retirement, he was a bus driver for the Dutchess County LOOP Bus System. He was born August 29, 1918 in Theresa, NY, the son of the late George William and Louise Bell Bacon Higgins. On September 22, 1956 in Plattsburgh, NY, he married Doris Sprague who survives at home. Mr. Higgins was a professional middle weight boxer who fought in approximately 40 professional fights and was also a Town of Amenia constable and worked part-time with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. He was a World War II Army veteran. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Frank G. Higgins (Mabel) of Sarnia, Ontario, Terry L. Higgins of Columbia, PA, and Kevin L. Higgins of Dover Plains, NY; two daughters, Maureen A. Ortmann (Steven) of Hogansville, GA and Kathleen K. Higgins of Pine Mountain Valley, GA; four step sisters, Gladys of Deferit, NY, Georgia and Mary of Utica, NY, and Barbara of Rochester, NY; three stepbrothers, Warren Lawton of Solvay, NY, Lloyd Lawton and Carlton Lawton of Deferit, NY; five grandchildren, Emily Fortney-Blunt (Paul), Eric Higgins (Bonnie), Darcy Higgins, Klya Higgins and Hunter Quinn Higgins and three great grandchildren. Sister Albert Higgins died June 30, 2002. 

Sister Albert Higgins died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Thursday, June 27, 2002. A member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 76 years, she would have celebrated her 100th birthday on November 5. 
Sister Albert began her many years of ministry as a teacher at Marymount Academy, Tarrytown, NY, and Marymount School, New York City. In 1928, she was sent to Brazil. Vaccinated against yellow fever, with one or two lessons in Portuguese, she arrived in Rio de Janeiro on September 7, after a thirteen-day boat trip. There, she taught English for four years at Sacred Heart of Mary School. 

Just after making her final vows in August 1932, Sister Albert was named novice mistress, a position she filled for 22 years. When asked what about her emphasis in forming the novices , she answered, "the spirit of faith and the spirit of obedience." When speaking about her years in Brazil, she said, "These were the happiest years in my religious life. Brazil was for me a real spiritual font. You could drink deep. People didn't preach religion; they lived it." 

Sister Albert remained in Brazil until 1950 when she was sent to teach English at Marymount on Via Nomentana in Rome. It was during that time, that she also had the opportunity to spend a few months at the Motherhouse in B�ziers, France, working on the preliminary stages of the cause of Jean Gailhac, founder of the RSHM. It was there that she nurtured her interest in the spirit and spirituality of Father Gailhac, and for the rest of her days, her devotion to him was an ever-present part of her ministry. 

In 1952, Mother Agnes de Jesus Teixeira, former provincial in Brazil and later provincial in Portugal, asked that Sister Albert be sent to Mozambique with her to establish the first RSHM foundation in Africa, at Quelimane. She spent six years in Mozambique, first in Quelimane, and then in Guru�, where she was superior and founder of the second RSHM school in Africa. 

Sister Albert's final mission in Africa, began in 1960�a nine year sojourn in Southern Rhodesia, now know as Zimbabwe�teaching at Marymount School in Umtali (now known as Mutare) and at St. Kilian's Mission in Rusape. Speaking about Marymount, the first school in Rhodesia to be integrated, she commented, "That spirit of openness to receive any child who comes along, who is in a condition to learn or to be educated, is really an expression of our spirit of zeal that belonged to Father Gailhac." 

In 1969, Sister Albert returned to Rome to teach again, before retiring. But even when she was no longer teaching full-time, she continued to teach one or two classes, to tutor students in English, and to care for the chapel. 

In 1996, the year of her 70th anniversary of her first vows, she returned to Tarrytown, NY, where she had begun her religious life, to live with the retired sisters at Marymount Convent. Sr. Albert is survived by a sister, Sister Gertrude Higgins, RSHM, of Tarrytown, NY; [SEE NEXT OBITUARY) a niece, Eileen Higgins Harris in South Africa; a nephew, Michael Higgins in England; and cousins, Sister Nora Grace, RSHM, and Sister Catherine Grace, RSHM, both of Tarrytown, NY; Sister Francisca Grace, RSHM, of Rome, Italy; Loretta Higgins and James Higgins of Edison, NJ; Margaret Higgins Connell of Jamesburg, NJ; and Patrick Priest of Manasquan, NJ. 

Funeral services were at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown on June 30 and July 1, 2002. Sister Albert was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in White Plains, NY.

Sister Gertrude Higgins died in Tarrytown, NY, January 19, 2003 

Sister Gertrude Higgins died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Saturday, January 18, 2003. She was 97 years of age and would have celebrated 75 years as aReligious of the Sacred Heart of Mary later this year.

She was born Rosaline Carmel Higgins in Dublin, Ireland on May 9, 1905, to Michael and Margaret Mary Morgan Higgins. 

On October 5, 1926, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY. She made her first vows at Marymount, Tarrytown, on July 12, 1928 and her final vows, also at Marymount, on August 27, 1933. 

After first profession, Sister Gertrude was sent to Marymount School in New York, NY, where she taught from 1928 to 1934. In 1934, she was assigned to Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, where she taught art and art history until she retired in 1970. At that time she was named professor emerita. In 1993, she moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY where she was living at the time of her death. 

Sister Gertrude had many gifts�teaching education, speech and especially art�and a great love of music and all things Irish. She was an artist and taught hundreds of students to love art and the old Masters. She was a wonderful calligrapher, and like a medieval scribe, she could patiently and painstakingly letter words with graceful lines and dots of color with perfection. After retiring from teaching at the College, she devoted her time to CCDprograms in Immaculate Conception Church in Tarrytown. She also kept in touch with the Mother Butler Center in South Dakota, and the Mother Butler Guilds, which had been one of her interests in her years at the College. 

Sister Gertrude is survived by several cousins who are Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary: Sister Nora Grace and Sister Catherine Grace both of Tarrytown, NY and Sister Francisca Grace of Rome, Italy. Her sister Sister Albert (SEE PREVIOUS OBITUARY), also a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, died in June 2002. 

Funeral services were at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY. Sister Gertrude was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in White Plains, NY.

Obituary - Mrs. Daniel Higgins died at her residence on Exchange street yesterday forenoon. By this dispensation three little children, the oldest only about eight years old, are made orphans, their respected and lamented father having died about a year ago. Mrs. Higgins has a wide circle of relatives and acquaintances in this community who mourn their great bereavement. Her death was caused by heart disease. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church with a solemn requiem mass.

Mrs. Julia A. Higgins, widow of Patrick Higgins, died at the home of her son-in-law, John Connolly, 579 Exchange street, last Tuesday, aged about 70 years. She was the daughter of Patrick Moore, who in old times resided about opposite the house where she died. She was a cousin of D. E. Moore. Her father was one of about a half dozen of the earliest Irish emigrants who settled in Geneva; the others whom we call to mind were Michael Ryan, Patrick Dillon, Thomas Nevins, and her own brother, Matthew Moore.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT - Mr. Rody Higgins, a brakeman on Northern Central Railway, residing in this village, was so severely injured at Penn Yan on Tuesday of last week, that he died from his injuries on Friday. He was engaged in coupling cars, and in some manner two of them missed connecting, and caught his head between them, a large nut on a bolt crushing into the side of his head, making an ugly wound. His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of friends.

A Sudden Death - The death of Thomas Higgins, a well-known drayman of our village, occurred last Monday under peculiarly sad and distressing circumstances. About two months ago Mr. H. met with an accident in being thrown out of his wagon. He fell striking his side upon a large boulder by the roadside, causing severe internal injury which developed in an abscess. He has been steadily failing ever since, all treatment proved unavailing. Recently a consultation of physicians was held over his case, at which the conclusion was arrived at that a surgical examination, and possibly an operation, afforded the only hope of cure, and without speedy relief the patient's life could be prolonged but a few days. Dr. H. K. Clarke was the attending physician, and Dr. Dox was associated with him when about to perform the operation. Dr. Dox put his patient under the influence of chloroform. He states that the anaesthetic took effect with the shortest application within his experience in case of an adult. Just as they were about to make an examination of the abscess, Dr. Clarke noticed an alarming change in the countenance of the patient. Immediate measures were adopted to revive him, but all effort proved unavailing. Death ensued within a few moments. The physicians attributed the fatal result to paralysis of the heart. An inquest was held by Coroner Weyburn, but the family protested so strongly against a port mortem examination that it was waived. Deceased was married and leaves children. Their sudden and sad bereavement elicits universal sympathy.
