This file, and the report, cover 5 generations of the
descendants of Thomas Higgins and Mary Shell.
Born in England around 1801, this family came to South
Australia, a new colony, from Gravesend, London on
Thames, Aug 26, 1837, on ship 'Navarino' arriving on
6th December 1837, embarking at Pt. Misery Pt.
Adelaide (now called West Lakes). A plaque now marks the spot.
Jill Brewer and Teresa Jack posted some of this
information about the families on internet.
Thomas Aubrey Higgins, is still living in Victoria,
Australia. Many notes came from his private family records.

Moved from place to place along the route as the
railway from Adelaide to Perth was built, and they had
the travelling boarding house, feeding the men building the line.
The boarding house was base for men working on the railways. It was moved from place to place along the

Notes for MARY CHENE PEARSONS:
Did wonderful crochet - using 40 sewing cotton when
she couldn't afford real crochet cotton - doilies for
the family birthdays, and huge cloths for weddings.
She was still crocheting when she was over 80.
When the first world war ended, she was in a movie
theatre. When the announcement was made everyone
walked out of the theatre into the street to celebrate.
One day when she dressed Tom in a cream suit, Nell
gave him a chocolate and it ended up all over Tom.
They had a shop for a while. She was a housewife,
ran a boarding house when she was younger.
When she was on the farm at Karrawinna she had more
than 100 hens to gather eggs from.
Sang in a church choir for many years.

In youth and when first married he worked on the farm
at Karrawinna, Victoria with his father.
Later, in East Gippsland, he became a Forest
Commission employee and officer for 35 years.
Inducted into legacy at Buchan 4th August, 1978
Tom played the accordion all his life, and he and Joy
joined a Bush Band when they became senior citizens -
and were very busy performing all around Gippsland and
at the Melbourne Show.
Tom attended Pine Field State School in South
Australia, Karawinna State School, Kinglake Foremen's
Forestry School 1946.
As a young adult in Mildura Tom bought a pair of
Oxford bags (pants that were all the rage) about 25 inches around the cuff.
Thomas Aubrey Higgins, son of Albert and Mary Higgins
was born March 3r, 1916 at Port Augusta, SA during the
period where his parents were conducting a travelling
boarding house for the workers on the east-west
railway line. When he was three years old, his
parents became farmers, first in SA and later in
Victoria. He attended school at Pinefield, SA and
later Karrawinna, Victoria. He left school 1931, to
work on the family property at Karrawinna.
He became a keen sportsman at an early age, playing
tennis, cricket, and football. He represented the
Millewa league in inter-league football, and on two
occasions was a representative of Millewa-Millewa West
country-week cricket.
At 17 years of age he also became superintendent of
.he Karrawinna Sunday School of 45 pupils.
He married Joy Trevaskis on 6th September 1937, and
they spent the early part of their married life at
Karrawinna, but shortly after Geoffrey was born they
moved to East Gippsland.
Tom worked 31 years with the Forests Commission of
Nowa Nowa, after doing a little charcoal burning in
that area. He spent another 4 years in war service.
He joined the AIF in January 1942, and, after a short
training period at Puckapunyal, was posted to the 10th
Field Regiment and sent, with an Army Division, to
Western Australia. Fear was held that the Japanese
may attempt a landing there, following the bombing of
Broome, Darwin, and other areas. He became a
Signaler Bombardier, and spent 18 months in WA before
the unit returned to Victoria and was broken up.
After completing a jungle-training course at Canungra,
he went as a reinforcement to the 2/2 Field Regiment
at Wondecla on the Atherton tableland. In Oct-Nov 4
he went with the Regiment to New Guinea. At this
time he was a signaler, grade 2. He was discharged
in February '45 and ordered by the Manpower
Directorate to work on the Trevaskis farm at Wairewa.
While in the army Tom did a forestry course from the
Melbourne Technical College passing in this. January
1946 the Forests Commission sent him to Kinglake for a
12-month training course, however after 6 months, due
to a shortage of staff several personal, including
Tom, were sent back to their areas. Now a Staff
Foreman, he later became an Overseer.
The forestry work included supervision of licensees
and employees, bush studies, surveys and traverses;
branding for sleeper cutters, saw mills, pole cutters,
logging operations, and others; and fighting bush
fires.
Three more children were added to the Higgins family,
although sadly, Mervyn only lived for one month.
Tom and Joy spent many happy hours with accordion and
piano, fished often, and Tom always loved his sport.
He played football till he was 40, cricket till 45,
and tennis to 50. He only gave up tennis because it
was interfering with his fishing. He had his own
boat, and with his family and friends, and apart from
fishing the local areas, had many happy fishing
holidays around the Snowy Scheme lakes, and also Lakes
Burrinjuck, Wyangala and Hume.
He kept very busy over the years for many
local organizations. For his works for ex-serviceman
and their dependants, at Nowa Nowa and Bruthen, he was
awarded a life membership of the RSL in 1978. He
also was awarded a life governorship of the Nowa Nowa
Community Health Centre. He was three years
Treasurer and 20 years President of the Nowa Nowa
primary school, and was for 14 years
Secretary-Treasurer of the Nowa Nowa-Lake Tyers
Aboriginal Parish of the Anglican Church. He served
on sports and hall committee and was a Justice of the
Peace for 28 years, this duty being terminated
September 1990 when all those over 72 years of age
were compulsorily retired.
In 1982 he retired to Lake Tyers Beach, having already
spent 8 years in retirement in Nowa Nowa. Having
joined the Lakes Entrance Uniting Church, he spent 5
years as an Elder, and some years as Sunday School
Treasurer. He joined the Lake Tyers Beach Progress
Association. IN 1974 he became a Legate. He was
always involved with music, and was a member of the
Pioneer Bush band, and later, the Aussie Pioneers.
Geoffrey, Yvonne and Bethne with their wonderful
spouses, his fine grandchildren, and their families,
find time to visit and bring great joy.

Joy attended Wairewa State School 3739 and Bairnsdale
high School. she taught at Omeo, Karawinna, Buchan
East, Meringur, Ryton, and Nowa Nowa.
Joy and Tom were married by Rev. Freeman after school
finished on Sept 6, 1937 (3:30 pm) at the "Banks and
Braes" farmhouse in Wairewa. They were attended by
Archie Trevaskis, Richie Trevaskis, Caroline appleby,
and Velma Vickers. Everyone from Hospital Creek,
Upper Hospital Creek and part of Nowa Nowa attended.
Joy and her mother cooked for the month before the
wedding in a baker's oven.
Joy nursed her mother for several years prior to
Bessie being hospitalized and dying.
Joy was always a strong advocate for her family and
friends. A great organizer, artistic, creative, and
always busy.
Joy Frances Jane Higgins, eldest daughter of Mark and
Eveline Bessie Orleana Trevaskis of Mt. Sabine, was
born on 29th April 1912, at the home of Alf and Marion
Holmes, Brighton, Victoria. Two years later Mark
selected property at Upper Hospital Creek, now named
Wairewa. Joy spent her childhood there, with sister
Birdie, and brothers Archie and Richie. Her education
was received there and later at Bairnsdale High
School.
Joy commenced teaching in 1930, at Omeo, and taught
also in the Mallee and East and South Gippsland, until
her marriage. She later did emergency teaching, until she was almost 70.
Joy married Tom Higgins at her parents' home, Wairewa,
on 6th September 1937, and they spent the first part
of their married life farming at Karawinna.
After their first child, Geoffrey was born, owing to
drought conditions they left there and went to East
Gippsland. Tom commenced employment with the
Victorian Forests Commission at Nowa Nowa in 1939.
Their son Geoffrey and daughters Yvonne and Bethne
completed a very happy and close-knit family. Their
second child, Mervyn Albert, had sadly only lived for 1 month.
The family spent much time in service to others.
Tom, Joy and family have always shared a strong
involvement in church, school, sporting, fishing and
other activities. They have enjoyed music with many
friends. Joy kept in touch with relatives all around
the country, and took a lot of interest in the family
histories and stories. She took her mother into
their home to nurse and care for her in her final years.
Joy was many years organist at St. George's church in
Nowa Nowa. She has loved her gardening, 53 years
with CWA, 52 years Red Cross activities, and earlier
years of school Mothers' Club and church Guild.
Joy has been very artistic and talented, enjoying
various crafts, and many voluntary hours spent
assisting at the local school with music and
handcrafts. She made many beautiful things

She is a great organizer, with a very quick and active mind.
