Charles W. Higgins enlisted at Memphis Tennessee on April 21,1862 for 3 years or war in Hiram Miller Bledsoe's Company, of Palmer's* Battalion Missouri Light Artillery. Elected 1st Lieutenant. On the descriptive roll of this officer it states:
Age 22, Born in Kentucky. Remarks: Appointed from Missouri, entered service from Missouri State Guard as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 11,1861.Elected 1st Lei tenant December 21,1861 and appointed that rank in Confederate service. Compiled record shows service up to the 1st quarter of 1865.
Otherwise no further record of his service.

*This company served at different times with Palmer and Martin's Battalions of Reserve Artillery. These battalions were composed of batteries from various states which subsequently became independent commands.

Smith for 3 years or war. Personal description given as: Blue Eyes. Light Hair,5 ft 11 in tall, Fair complexion. Joined for duty and enroll at Washington County Arkansas on September 20,1862.Sent to hospital August 26,1863. On Jan/Feb 1864 roll he is listed as Musician of the 8th Mo. Infantry. Name appears on a roll of prisoners of war from Company "A" 8th Missouri Infantry who surrendered at New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26,1865 and paroled at Alexandria Louisiana on June 7,1865.

John Higgins, a native of Chicago, Illinois (resident of Memphis Tn at time of enlistment and a laborer by trade, enlisted at age 23 ,at Memphis Tennessee, as a Private on August 10,1861 in Company "C" 1st Missouri Infantry for 3 years service. (later in Company "G" when the 1st & 4th regiment were consolidated)
On Nov/Dec 1962 roll he is listed as absent on detail as an orderly and courier. Captured (July 4,1863) and paroled at Vicksburg, MS on July 6,1863 On Jul/Aug 1863 roll is is listed as sick in hospital at Demopolis, Alabama. Listed in 1st Mississippi C.S.A. hospital at Jackson, Ms on August 25, 1863 and returned to duty on September 3, 1863. Back with company on Nov/Dec 1863 roll. Killed on skirmish line near Atlanta, Georgia on August 19,1864.

Timothy Higgins enlisted as a Private June 25, 1861 at New Orleans, La in Company "A", 1st Missouri Infantry for war ( Consolidated November, 1,1862 into 1st & 4th Consolidated Infantry Regiment). He was enlisted by Captain J,K, Sprague. The Jul/Aug 1863 roll states he was captured at Battle of Baker's Creek on May 16, 1863 (Champion Hill is also noted as place of capture). His name is on a list of prisoners sent to Memphis, Tn on May 25, 1863. He was then sent to Camp Morton, Indiana and then to Fort Delaware on June 22, 1863. Sent from Fort Delaware to City Point Va for exchange. Name appears on a list, dated August 1,1863, of prisoners who were discharged and joined U.S. Service. Record states he was mustered into Captain George W. Ahls Heavy Artillery on July 27, 1863.

3rd Infantry: The Misssissippi 3rd Infantry Regiment was formally organized in October 1861 and merged with the 31st and 40th Infantry Regiments in 1865 to form the Misssissippi 3rd Infantry Regiment, Consolidated. See Stewart Sifakis, Compendium of the Confederate Armies: Mississippi (New York: Facts on File, 1995), pp. 74-76; H. Grady Howell, Jr., To Live and Die in Dixie: A History of the Third Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. (Jackson, MS: Chickasaw Bayou Press, 1991), pp. 63-65.

45th Infantry: The Mississippi 45th Infantry Regiment was originally organized as the 3rd Infantry Battalion (known as "Hardcastle's" from its commander, Aaron R. Hardcastle) in 1861, which became the 33rd Infantry Regiment in 1862. The regiment was renamed the 45th Mississippi Infantry in 1863. See Sifakis, pp. 73, 136-137.

Jeff Davis Legion: This unit was originally established as the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, consisting of three companies from Mississippi and one from Alabama, in October 1861. With the addition of companies from Alabama and Georgia, the unit was renamed the Jeff Davis Legion later that year. See Sifakis, p. 60.

Same on roll through February 1864.On Sept/Oct 1863 roll notes he is in Hospital at Okolona Mississippi.

On July 31,1909,George W. Higgins, a resident of Florida since Nov 27,1881, filed for a pension in  Citrus County Florida for his service in Company "C" of the 3rd Mississippi Infantry C.S.A..
His application states he was born in Newberry S.C. on July 5th 1838. 
He enlisted at Vicksburg Mississippi on November 13,1861.
On an application filed on Jan 22,1904,at the age of 65, he stated his Confederate service as; That he enlisted November 13,1861 and re-enlisted Feb 9,1864 in Captain Nunn's Company of the County of Noxubee in the state of Mississippi. He states he was shot in the head, through the left ear, at the battle of Nashville Tennessee. He states that his hearing has never fully recovered from that wound. He also notes that he was shot through the calf of the right leg at the Battle of Shiloh.
He was discharged in April 1865 at Greensboro N.C.

On Nov/Dec 1862 roll is absent on 40 day furlough at his home, having been wounded at Sharpsburg. Furlough began November 11, 1862. Furlough was extended and ended on February 6, 1863. Service length extended for the war. On May/Jun 1863 roll he has been detailed as a Commissary Clerk for the regiment. On Nov/Dec 1863 roll states he is absent and has been detailed as Post Commissary Clerk at Mt. Carmel, Mississippi.

On April 2nd, 1906,in Polk County, Florida, Sallie Elizabeth Higgins, born in Winston County, Mississippi, a resident of Florida for 25 years, applied for a Confederate widows pension for her husband's Civil War service. http://www.floridamemory.com/fmp/fpr/A12692/002.pdf 
Her husband, John J, Higgins, according to her application served since 1861 in Company "C" 32nd Mississippi, also known as "Mississippi Rebels"* which she states they were assigned to Bragg's Division and remained so until the end of the war.
The application mentions service for a short time in the Noxubee Rifles. She stated that she and he were married Oct 23,1859 in Winston County North Carolina. Her husband died at Winter Haven Florida in March of 1906.
John J. Higgins applied for his pension June 24,1902 http://www.floridamemory.com/fmp/fpr/A12692/008.pdf at the age of 73. He states he was born Dec 2,1829 in Newberry, South Carolina. He notes he is suffering from rheumatism. He was then a resident of Hernando County, Florida. He stated that he enlisted Jan 12,1861 in the 32nd Mississippi.
States he took part in the battle of Atlanta Georgia about Jul 27,1864 and was wounded in the head which made him unfit for service for about 40 days.
Surrendered on or about the last day of April 1865 in Raleigh North Carolina.

On temporary duty as a brick mason with quartermaster Corp on July 1864. Surrendered at Citronelle Alabama on May 4,1865 and was paroled at Meridian Ms. on May 16,1865.

Name appears on a register to General Hospital (Soldier's Home Hospital) Shelby Springs Hospital for Chronic Diarrhea from Sept 4, to Oct 15,1864. Admitted to Way Hospital at Meridan Mississippi on March 18,1865, over 45 years old, discharged.

Thomas Higgins enrolled on June 20,1861 as a Private in Captain Daniel R. Russell's Company (Carroll Guards) Mississippi Volunteers* at Carrolton by Captain S.E. Baker for the war. He was mustered into service on July 10,1861. Captured at Ft. Donelson on February 16,1862 and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois. Name appears on list of prisoners dated Aug 1,1862.He was then sent to Vicksburg, Miss on Sept 2,1862 to be exchanged. Present on all other rolls until Jul/Aug 1864 roll where it list him as absent, having been wounded at Kennesaw Mountain on June 21,1864 and sent to hospital. No further record this source.

W. N. Higgins enlisted at age 33 August 24,1861 in Captain G.W. Paris' Company, (later designated Company "D") 4th Mississippi Volunteers at Grenada Mississippi by General West for 1 year service. He is listed as 3rd Sergeant on muster in roll. Discharged on April 15,1862 by order of General Bragg. On some undated pages he is listed as a Musician, and that he had escaped from Fort Henry immediately prior to being discharged. No further record.
