- WILL C. HIGGINS -
(William Corydon Higgins)
Among the journalists and newspaper editors and owners of the west none enjoys
wider or more merited fame than Will C. Higgins, the editor and co-owner of the
Salt Lake Mining Review, a sixty-two page, semi-monthly paper devoted to the
interests of the mining industry of the west and enjoying a wide circulation.
Mr. Higgins is a native of Spencer, New York, born June 21, 1856. His father,
the Rev. Corydon W. Higgins, was born in Massachusetts and became a
minister of the Presbyterian faith. He was graduated from Williams College and
also from the Auburn (N. Y.) Theological Seminary. He wedded Hattie C.
Chapin, a native of Rochester, New York. She died in Osborn, Missouri, after
rearing a family of six children. Rev. Higgins, having devoted many years of his
life to the work of preaching the gospel, spent his last days in honorable
retirement in Salt Lake, where he passed away. The children of the family still
living are: Mrs. Caroline McKinley; Will C.; Hon. E. V. Higgins,
who was judge of the fifth judicial district of Utah for a term, 'and assistant
attorney general of the state for six years; Mary B., the wife of Rev.
W. T. Scott, of Salem, Oregon; Charles C., who is engaged in mining
at Reno, Nevada; and Lucy T., living at Portland, Oregon.
Will C. Higgins was educated at Park College of Hannibal, Missouri. He then
turned his attention to newspaper work at Kingston, Missouri, and later at Udall
and at Syracuse, Kansas, and at Denver, Colorado. In Denver he worked on the
News and Times. In 1889 he came to Salt Lake City to engage in newspaper work,
becoming telegraph editor of the Tribune, with which he was connected- for a
short period. He then established the Daily Mining Journal, which he conducted
successfully for two years, after which he sold the paper. He then established
the Iron County Record at Cedar City, Utah, and continued its publication for
two years, when he again sold out and returned to Salt Lake. He then became
mining editor of the Daily Herald, with which he was thus connected for five
years, on the expiration of which period he founded the Salt Lake Mining Review
in 1899. The business has now grown to extensive proportions. Mr. Higgins is
half owner and editor of the paper, a sixty-two page publication, devoted to the
interests of mining in the west, presenting every question that is of value to
those identified with the development of the mineral and oil resources of this
section of the country.
In 1880 Mr. Higgins was married to Miss Isabel A. McAfee, of Evans,
Colorado, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McAfee, and to them were
born two children: Mrs. Marjorie C. Ireland, who was born in Evans,
Colorado, educated in Salt Lake and now resides in Golden, Utah, with her
husband and their one child, Isabel; and Corydon W., who was born
in Udall, Kansas, and died in Salt Lake in 1909. The wife and mother passed away
in 1912 and on the 28th of December, 1916, Mr. Higgins was again married, his
second union being with Mrs. Eva I. Cook, the widow of Orlando Cook.
In politics Mr. Higgins is an independent republican. For one term he served as
probate judge of Hamilton county, Kansas, but has never been a politician in the
sense of office-seeking, although at all times he keeps well informed concerning
the vital issues and problems of the day. He belongs to the Salt Lake Commercial
Club and is interested in every plan and project for the upbuilding of the city,
the extension of its business connections and the advancement of its civic
standards. His own record has been marked by constant progress, resulting from
the wise utilization of the opportunities which have come to him, and in the
publication of the Salt Lake Mining Review he is giving to mining circles a
magazine of the greatest interest and worth.

REV. C. W. HIGGINS - (Proprietor of the Caldwell County Sentinel, Kingston).
Rev. C. W. Higgins bought the Caldwell County Sentinel about five years ago, and
has since had control of that paper as proprietor, though its editorial
management is chiefly in the hands of his son, C. C. Higgins. The Sentinel is
one of the old and well established country journals of this portion of the
State, and has ever exerted a potent influence in public affairs and the general
interests of Caldwell county never more so than in late years whilst under the
direction of its present proprietor. It has a good patronage, and as a journal
commands the respect and confidence of the entire reading public among whom it
circulates. Mr. Higgins is a gentleman of culture and large general information,
scrupulously conscientious in all he says and does, and one who does as much
good for the community as lies within his power, and as little harm. These are
qualities which he esteems to be of the first importance in any calling in life.
For many years he was engaged in the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, and
did valuable work for that denomination while occupying the pulpit at different
places. Rev. Mr. Higgins came originally from Massachusetts, having been born in
Hampshire county, January 18, 1823. His father was Luther Higgins, also
of an early colonial family of that State; he married Miss Lydia King,
and of the family of children born of this union C. W. was the fourth child. The
senior Higgins during life was occupied in both farming and pursuing his trade
as mechanic. His death occurred in 1846, his wife departing this life in 1866.
The subject of' this sketch was reared in Massachusetts, and as he grew up
learned farming upon the old homestead. His school advantages were, perhaps,
superior to those of the general average of youths in that part of the country,
and he succeeded in obtaining a good education. He attended Williston Seminary
and also Williams College, and after this, having decided to devote himself to
the ministry, he took a theological course at Auburn Theological Seminary,
commencing his studies in 1850. After three years of close and studious
application he was graduated in 1853. Mr. Higgins began at once to preach, and
subsequently was engaged in the State of Wisconsin for two years, as well as in
New York for some time. In 1868 he accompanied a colony from Binghamton, N. Y.,
to Osborne, DeKalb county, Mo., and remained there as pastor of the Presbyterian
Church until 1880, in the meantime preaching to various congregations. In 1881
he came to Caldwell county and purchased the Sentinel, and from that time to
this he has been identified with the interests of this community in different
capacities. Mr. Higgins has been twice married ; his first wife was Miss
Hattie Chapin, of Rochester, N. Y., a daughter of Judge Chapin. She
died in 1872 leaving six children: Carrie, now Mrs. McKinlay; Willie,
editor of the Udall (Kas.) Sentinel; Mary, now the wife of Rev. W. T.
Scott, of Laclede; Edward, an attorney at law; Charles and
Lucy, at home. Mr. Higgins second marriage occurred in 1874 to Miss Mary
Frazier, a native of Ohio, and of Scotch parentage. Mr. Higgins is devoting
much attention to bee culture, an occupation in which he is greatly interested.
He is meeting with success in this departure, and is recognized as one ot' the
most prominent apiarists in the county.

-Salt Lake man presumed dead in avalanche
Search suspended: A Salt Lake City man is presumed dead, but a missing teen is found near Snowbird
By Jason Bergreen - The Salt Lake Tribune
Marshall Higgins (Courtesy of the Higgins family)
ASPEN GROVE - Just before Marshall Higgins headed out
for a snow shoeing excursion into the high mountains
east of Provo, Jeff Frederick took a photo of his friend in the pre-dawn darkness of Aspen Grove.
On Sunday, that photo was tacked to the inside wall of a Utah County sheriff's mobile command center as
helicopters waited to get to the mountainside where
Higgins had been swept away in an avalanche on
Saturday. By mid afternoon, authorities told Higgins'
family that the search had been deemed a search and recovery, not a search and rescue. A short time later,
weather and snow conditions forced temporary
cancellation of the search.
Earlier, Higgins' brother Adam Higgins, said the family was aware that change in the status of the
search meant Higgins likely had died. "It was disheartening but expected," he said. ''We're so
grateful Jeff came out of it.'' Higgins, 31, and Frederick, both of Salt Lake City,
had hiked for more than five hours to an altitude of about 10,300 feet near Hidden Lakes when the slide
engulfed them. Frederick was able to ride it out,
clutching a tree to stop. He searched for his friend, then used his cell phone to call for help. A Utah
Department of Safety helicopter plucked him to safety at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Also on Sunday, a 16-year-old California boy who had gone missing in an out-of-bounds area of Snowbird
ski resort was found alive and in good condition at
about 11:20 a.m.
Snowbird spokeswoman Laura Schaffer said the boy
built a snow cave in Mineral Basin, in the north fork
of American Fork Canyon, and emerged at about 10 a.m. Sunday and flagged down a search helicopter. "He was a smart kid, and the clear weather today,
those were the saving graces in this situation," she said. The boy's parents declined to release their and
their son's names and hometown, she said.
In the search for Higgins on Sunday, Wasatch Powderbird Guides dropped 29 explosive charges to
knock loose any potential avalanches before search crews were to be flown in. But shifting winds and
intermittent cloud cover forced authorities to call off the search, and Utah County Sheriff James Tracy
said forecasts of another storm system meant it would
not resume today.
Tracy said weather and conditions would determine when the search would continue.
Higgins' brothers described him as a sociable guy who made friends easily. An experienced snowshoer and
outdoorsman, he had ventured into the area several times in years past, his brother
Brandon Higgins said.
This was his first foray there
this winter; Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Darren Gilbert
said Saturday neither man had an avalanche beacon on
this trip. Frederick declined to speak to reporters Sunday at Aspen Grove.
Higgins is survived by his wife, Kelly, and
daughters Hannah, 3, and 2-year-old Emilee.
His presumed death is the first this season. By
this time last year, four people had died in avalanches, and a total of eight would perish, making that season one of the deadliest since records have
been kept. Saturday's avalanche was near where three men died on Dec. 26, 2003. They were among a group of five who
were swept down as they snowboarded in the Roberts Horn Chute of Aspen Grove, about 2 1/2 miles north of
Sundance Ski Resort.
The California boy apparently slipped through two
rope barriers at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday to get to
the out-of-bounds backcountry, Snowbird's Schaffer said Sunday. He was reported missing about 4 p.m., and
the ski patrol and dogs searched for him until 11:30
p.m., when conditions were deemed too unsafe, Schaffer said.
During that time, the boy carved out a snow cave
for refuge, she said, adding that he had heard
snowcats about 100 yards away at about 10 p.m. that
night but was "too tired" to flag them down. The boy slept in the cave through the night, awakening at 10
a.m. Sunday to the sound of a helicopter. He waved to
it and was rescued about 90 minutes later. The boy and his parents had been skiing and
boarding, but when he went missing he was with some cousins, Schaffer said.
Salt Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Todd Griffiths said
the boy would not be penalized for leaving the
resort's boundaries. ''He basically got lost, went off
a small hill and got in an area where he felt he could not hike out,'' he said.
In all, the ski patrol, Wasatch Powerbird Guides
and representatives of five counties - Salt Lake, Weber, Utah, Davis and Wasatch, contributed to the two
searches.

women of Utah tendered their thanks for signing the
female-suffrage bill. See Deseret News, March 2, 1870.
