Vernon R. Higgins

1913 -- 2009

Vernon R. Higgins, 96, of Kenosha (WI), passed away Wednesday, May 13, at Claridge House Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 24, 1913, in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., the son of the late Freeman and Lina (Pofahl) Higgins. He was a lifelong resident of Kenosha, educated in local schools.

On June 2, 1945, in Bristol, he married Kathryn Wilcox.

He had been employed by Johnson Motors for many years, retiring in 1979.

A member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bristol.

Surviving are his wife, Kathryn of Kenosha; his eight children, Melodine Borom of Racine; Aleita (Mike) Antongiorgi of Racine, Elaine Higgins of Zion, Ill., Robert Higgins of Kenosha, Lloyd Higgins of Kenosha, Dale Higgins of Kenosha, Curtis (Patricia) Higgins of Racine, and Jerry Higgins of Kenosha; five grandchildren, Connie, Samantha, Richard, Dwayne and Melissa; nine great grandchildren. Vernon was a loving husband, wonderful father, grandfather and a great friend. He was loved and adored by everyone who knew him.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Jacoby and Ermina Ellingson.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 18, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Proko Funeral Home and on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral services on Tuesday, May 19, at Zion Lutheran Church 7931 Highway 45 in Bristol at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.

               MICHAEL HIGGINS, Jr., a manufacturer of wagon and carriage springs and axles, and largely interested in other important industries of Racine, is a prominent, progressive and public-spirited resident who has advanced to the front by sheer force of personal determination and ability. He was born in Oswego, N. Y., June 28, 1855, son of Michael and Bridget (Malone) Higgins, natives of Ireland, the former of Cork and the latter of County Limerick. The paternal great-grandfather, Patrick Higgins, remained in his native land, but the grandfather � also named Patrick � emigrated to America in 1840 and settled at Little Falls, Herkimer Co., N. Y. Two years later he was killed by being struck by the falling branch of a tree. His wife, formerly Nancy Condon, survived him until 1866, when she died at an advanced age, the mother of the following children: James; Patrick; Joanna, who married Michael Lannan; Michael; Mary, who died in infancy; and Elizabeth, wife of Martin Geany, who resides in Ireland.

Michael Higgins, the father, was born in Young Grove, County Cork, Ireland, in February, 1834, and was brought to America by his parents when six years of age. He remained with the family at Little Falls, N. Y., for about two years, and resided in the State of New York for a period of twenty-one years. In 1856 he located in Chicago, but he returned to the East in 1857 and about six years later became a resident of Canada, where he remained for thirteen years. Afterward he removed to Missouri, and engaged in farming until 1889, that year marking the date of his settlement in Racine.

Michael Higgins, Sr., married Bridget Malone, who died Dec. 7, 1897, aged sixty-three years. She was a daughter of Cornelius and Nancy (Cliffe) Malone, who emigrated to America many years ago, settling near Kingston, Ontario, where Mr. Malone died at an advanced age. His wife lived to be upward of ninety years old. Mrs. Higgins was a member of the Catholic Church, to which her husband also belongs. They had these children : Michael, Jr.; Mary, the wife of Judge Daniel Murphy, of Mexico, Mo.; John, of Manila, Philippine Islands, in the United States government employ; Elizabeth, the wife of Timothy Connolly, of Racine; and Agnes, deceased, who was the wife of James Welsh.

Michael Higgins, Jr., was five or six years old when his parents removed to Gananoque, Canada, near Kingston, and at that place he grew to manhood, attending the common schools there. For several years he was employed on the steamers running on the St. Lawrence river and the Great Lakes, and then was employed at a spring factory in Gananoque. From there he removed to Kalamazoo, Mich., where for five years he was employed in spring factories, and then went to Bridgeport, Conn., where he followed the same occupation for four years. In 1885 he came to Racine and engaged in spring manufacturing on his own account, in a small way. His business has grown so that he now employs 150 men, and the factory is 320 x 180 feet in dimensions. Mr. Higgins is vice-president of the Commercial Savings Bank; vice-president of the Racine Malleable & Wrought Iron Company, which employs between four hundred and five hundred men; president of the Racine General Manufacturing Company, jobbers, and a director of the Racine Shoe Company.

Mr. Higgins was married Jan. 5, 1879, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Miss Mary Fitzgibbon, daughter of David and Catherine (Sullivan) Fitzgibbon, natives of Ireland, the former of Limerick and the latter of County Cork. David Fitzgibbon was a railroad man. and, on coming to America, met, in. Buffalo, N. Y., Miss Sullivan, and there they were married. For some time they were located at various points in Michigan, and lived for some time in Kalamazoo. He died in 1895, aged seventy-six years, and his wife in March, 1904, in her eighty-second year. They had three children: David, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; John; and Mary, Mrs. Higgins.

Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Higgins, Jr., namely: James, George, Agnes, Joseph, Frank, and Leo (who died Nov. 24, 1904). Of this family, James is superintendent of his father's plant; George is employed in the axle plant. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are members of the Catholic Church, belonging to the St. Rose congregation. He is fraternally connected with the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Royal League. Mr. Higgins has been very prominent in political matters. He was the Democratic alderman from the Sixth ward in 1889, serving two years; in 1899 was elected mayor, and was re-elected in 1901, serving altogether four years; and was president of the park board in 1905-06. Mr. Higgins's home, at No. 1900 Washington avenue, was erected by him in 1893. His father resides at No. 1229 Eleventh street.

When about five or six years of age Michael Higgins, whose name introduces this review, was taken by his parents to Gananoque, Canada, where he pursued a common school education and grew to manhood. After spending several years as an employee on steamers on the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes he secured a situation in a spring factory in Gananoque and afterward spent five years as an employee in spring factories in Kalamazoo, Michigan, during which time his knowledge of and experience in the business was constantly broadening and winning for him deserved promotion. He then went to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he was employed for four years, becoming foreman of a factory. It was with this experience that he came to Racine in 1884 and joined E. W. Ansted in organizing the Ansted 82; Higgins Spring Company, mentioned above. The business continually grew and developed along substantial lines and following the establishment of a branch house in Indiana the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Ansted taking over the Indiana establishment, while Mr. Higgins retained the ownership of the Racine business. From the beginning the enterprise has grown and developed until between one hundred and seventy-five and two hundred workmen are employed in the factory, which is three hundred and twenty by one hundred and eighty feet in dimensions. Mr. Higgins has long been recognized as one of the capable and foremost business men of the city and his co-operation has been sought alone other lines which have led to the city's commercial growth and development as well as to individual success.

Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are communicants of St. Rose Catholic church and he belongs also to the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Royal League and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He has long been a recognized leader in democratic circles and has on various occasions been called to public office, serving for two terms as alderman in the city council from the sixth ward, beginning in 1889, while in 1899 he was elected mayor of the city, being continued in the office for four years through his re-election in 1901. His administration was characterized by various plans that prevented useless expenditure, that promoted progress along beneficial lines and that introduced needed reforms and improvements. In 1905-06 he served as president of the park board and his activities for the benefit of the city have been far-reaching, his labors contributing much to the municipal progress and to the material development and up building of Racine. He belongs to that class of substantial American citizens who owe their progress to personal effort, diligence and determination and his life record should serve to inspire and encourage others, indicating what may be accomplished by persistent, earnest effort intelligently directed.

James Higgins, secretary of the Higgins Spring & Axle Company, was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan. September 6. 1880, while his father, Michael Higgins, mentioned above, was a resident of that city. He supplemented his public school education by study in Niagara University, in which he spent two years, and later he engaged in business with his father, entering into active connection with the Higgins Spring & Axle Company. in which he is now holding a position of administrative direction and executive control as secretary and manager. He has acquainted himself with every department of the work and is familiar with the business in principle and detail, so that he wisely directs the work of employees and as wisely controls the introduction of the products to the markets, being thus active in the management of one of the important industrial concerns of Racine.

On the 21st of November, 1911, Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Florence M. Malone, a native of Janesville, Wisconsin, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bartholomew Malone, who came to Racine several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have one daughter. Helen Jean. The family attends St. Rose Catholic church and James Higgins holds membership with the Knights of Columbus and also with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He was but four years of age when brought to Racine, so that practically his entire life has been passed in this city, where he has a wide acquaintance and where he is accorded a creditable and enviable position as a business man.

The History of Higgins Spring & Axle Company

The Higgins Spring & Axle Company is successor to the Ansted & Higgins Spring Company, which was established in 1884 by Michael Higgins and E. W. Ansted. Their plant was located at Racine Junction and there they began the manufacture of springs, putting upon the market a product which found immediate favor, as indicated by the continued growth of their business. This led to the establishment of a branch plant at Connersville, Indiana, which was afterward taken over by Mr. Ansted, and the partnership was then dissolved, Mr. Higgins remaining in charge of the Racine establishment. The company was incorporated under its present form in 1892, with Mrs. Mary Higgins as the president, James Higgins as secretary and Michael Higgins as treasurer. They are engaged in the manufacture of springs and axles, doing special work for various companies, and their output is sold all over the United States. The business has become one of large proportions, as indicated in the fact that employment is now given to from one hundred and severity-five to two hundred people, mostly skilled labor. The plant covers about, half a block, most of the building is two stories in height and the equipment of the shop includes the latest improved machinery necessary for their line. Their business methods have ever commended them to the confidence and support of the public and they are just in their treatment of debtor and creditor alike, while to their employees they are considerate, advancing those in their service in recognition of talent and fidelity whenever opportunity offers.

Dr. Samuel George Higgins, an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, practicing successfully in Milwaukee, with offices in the Wells building, was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, May 14, 1880, and is the only son of Dr. Samuel G. and Tealie M. (Beatty) Higgins. The father was born in Sligo, Ireland, and for many years engaged in medical practice at Wausau following his graduation from the medical department of the University of Michigan. He died in 1886, at the age of forty-six years, and was long survived by his wife, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and who departed this life in 1905. There was one daughter in the family, who is now Mrs. Mary Hilgerman of Minneapolis.

Dr. S. G. Higgins of this review was reared in Wausau and in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and was graduated from the high school of the latter city in 1898. His more advanced education was acquired in the University of Wisconsin which conferred upon him the Bachelor of Science degree in 1902. He then studied in the medical department of the University of Illinois at Chicago and completed his course by graduation in June, 1905. He afterward spent a year as intern in St. Ann's Hospital of Chicago and then turned his attention to his specialty�the treatment of diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat. He practiced along that line in Chicago for a year, being assistant to Drs. Casey Wood and Frank Allport, and since 1907 has been located in Milwaukee. Here he was first associated with Dr. H. V. Wurdemann for a year and later became a partner of Dr. Nelson M. Black, the two being thus associated until 1917. Since that time Dr. Higgins has maintained a separate office on the eleventh floor of the Wells building and has continued in practice with marked success. He has taken postgraduate work in London and Vienna, where he studied in 1913. During the World war he became a member of the Medical Reserve Corps of the United States navy, being made a lieutenant senior grade. He belongs to the Milwaukee Medical Society, the Milwaukee County Medical Society, the Wisconsin State Medical Society, the Tri-State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Oto-Laryngology. He is likewise a member of the American Academy of Medicine and he is widely known as the author of many treatises on the eye, ear, nose and throat, which have appeared in the leading medical journals. He also belongs to the Milwaukee Oto-Ophthalmic Society and he has utilized every available means to promote his efficiency and broaden his knowledge concerning the most scientific methods of medical
treatment in the field of his specialty. He is now on the teaching staff of Marquette University as assistant professor of the eye, ear, nose and throat and is serving on the staff of the Milwaukee County Hospital. He is likewise visiting surgeon of the northwest branch of the National Soldiers Home at Milwaukee. At one time he served as president of the Milwaukee Oto-Ophthalmic Society and he is chairman of the eye, ear, nose and throat section of the Wisconsin State Medical Society. He utilizes every opportunity to advance the work of the profession through the proceedings of its various societies and he is continually advancing his own standards in practice.

On the 26th of June, 1918, Dr. Higgins was married to Miss Frances Laacke of Detroit. He is well known in club circles, having membership in the University Club, the Milwaukee Athletic Club, the Wisconsin Club and the Milwaukee Country Club. He also belongs to the Milwaukee Rotary Club. He greatly enjoys golf and fishing and turns to outdoor sports of this character for his recreation. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Episcopal church, while fraternally he is identified with the Masonic order, in which he has attained the Knights Templar degree of the York Rite and the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. He is also a member of the Mystic Shrine.

FRANCIS M. HIGGINS. The newspaper profession in Walworth county has an able
and worthy representative in the person of Francis M. HIGGINS, editor of the
News at Lake Geneva, whose success since locating here has won him a high
place among his contemporaries and many admirers in the city and county for
his straightforward and public-spirited policy, and his influence has been for
the general upbuilding of this locality in every way possible, for he
evidently has unswerving faith in its future and its interests at heart.

Mr. HIGGINS was born in LaSalle county, Illinois, May 23, 1861. He is the son
of James and Ellen (EGAN) HIGGINS, the father born in county Donegal, Ireland,
and was there reared and educated, emigrating to America in 1837, and located
in LaSalle county, Illinois, in 1838. He was a stone cutter and there he
assisted in building culverts and viaducts on the Illinois & Michigan canal,
and he was living there when he married Ellen EGAN, a native of county Mayo,
Ireland, who came to America when young and at the time of her marriage was
living at Joliet, Illinois. When these parents came to northern Illinois they
found a wild, sparsely settled prairie. James HIGGINS took a prominent part
in public affairs, in organization and general civic duties in LaSalle county,
of which he was commissioner at the time the county was laid off as a separate
county. He bought land and turned his attention to farming. His family
consisted of twelve children, all born and reared on the farm in LaSalle
county. The death of James HIGGINS occurred in 1889; his widow is still
living, being now eighty-seven years of age. After spending fifty-five years
on the home farm, she moved to Seneca, Illinois, in 1905, where she still
resides.

Francis. HIGGINS grew up on the home farm on which he worked when a boy,
attending the district schools in the winter time, later attending the Grundy
County Normal at Morris, Illinois. When nineteen years of age he obtained a
certificate to teach school and he taught near home during the winters for
several years. In 1884 he went to Kansas, where he spent six years, part of
the time in Nebraska, handling horses. Returning to the home farm in LaSalle
county, Illinois, he remained there five years, managing the same in
partnership with his brother, then he bought a newspaper at Seneca and has
been in the newspaper business ever since. In 1899 he leased the plant of the
Fair Dealer, a newspaper at Ottawa, Illinois, and he remained at that place
until the spring of 1903. In October of that year he came to Wisconsin and
took the management of the Lake Geneva News, and here he has continued his
efforts to the present time. He has made his paper an important factor in
local affairs, increased its circulation constantly, rendered it valuable as
an advertising medium and brightened very materially its mechanical appearance.

Mr. HIGGINS has long taken an active interest in politics, and before leaving
Illinois he took a hand in public affairs. He is at present chairman of the
Republican county central committee of Walworth county. He is president of
the Wisconsin League of Progressive Republican Newspapers. He is also a
member of the executive committee of the State Progressive League. He is
heart and soul for the progressive movement, believing it to be the fight for
the people, although he was reared a Democrat and was with that party in his
earlier career.

Mr. HIGGINS was married in 1895, at Seneca, Illinois, to Katherine McCORMICK,
daughter of James and Johanna (SHEEDY) McCORMICK. She was a native of LaSalle
county, Illinois, and her death occurred in 1902, leaving three children,
Mildred, Florence and Francis. She was a member of the Catholic church, to
which her children and Mr. HIGGINS also belong. In 1904 Mr. HIGGINS was
united in marriage with Mrs. Cora (GIFFORD) HANSCOM, daughter of E. P. and
Marietta (CHAPIN) GIFFORD, and widow of P. L. HANSCOM, deceased. She was born
in Walworth county, of which her parents were early settlers. Her mother was
born on the "Maple Glen Farm," near Lake Geneva, seventy years ago. Her
father came here from New York about 1840, being among the very early
settlers. Mrs. HIGGINS had one daughter by her former marriage, Winnifred.
Her first husband, Mr. HANSCOM, died in 1901.

Mr. HIGGINS' hobby is scientific agriculture. Before leaving Illinois he spent
a week each year at the state agricultural experiment station, and he has
endeavored ever since to disseminate knowledge and arouse interest in
experiment work along these lines. He gives much time to farmers' institute
work and in organizing corn contests, distributing seeds, etc. He is well
read, keeps fully abreast of the times in all scientific and research work as
well as the world's best literature, and he is known as an earnest worker for
any cause which he espouses.
