6/26/11MUNCIE — Dr. Joseph Burton (J.B.) Black Jr., died June 23, 2011, at Westminster Village in Muncie. He graduated from University High School, Bloomington, IN and Kemper Military School and Junior College in Boonville, MO.   He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, and with the Indiana National Guard until he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He received his B.S., MBA, and Doctor of Business Administration degrees from Indiana University. J.B. worked in the family’s business, Black Lumber Companies, recently serving as a director and chairman of the executive committee.  Dr. Black first taught at Indiana University and then Miami University. He served as USAID Economic Advisor to the government of El Salvador. Dr. Black was dean of the College of Business at Wright State University and President of Kemper Military School and College. He was appointed Dean of the College of Business at Ball State University in 1973, and led the college to its first national accreditation.  He was a Bloomington city councilman from 1947-1951, and a state delegate to the 1956 Indiana Democratic Convention.

He married Sue Catherine Stone of Boonville, MO, who bore him three sons, Joseph B. (Jay) III (wife-Janice), Dallas, TX, William M. (wife-Jane), Kewanee, IL, and J. Douglas, Bloomington, who survive. J.B. is also survived by his grandsons, Joseph B. Black IV (wife-Nicole), and David J. Black. After the death of his first wife, he married Mary Jane Hughes, who survives him, as do his stepdaughters, Claudia Covalt Auger, Bali, Indonesia, and Ann Covalt, Arlington, VA.

Marilyn Seward Warden, 80, died on Feb. 5th, 2004 at home in Bloomington, Indiana.  She was born May 3rd, 1923 in Bloomington, Indiana to Edith Regester Seward and William Austin Seward.  The Seward family was one of Bloomington's founders.  Austin Seward settled in Bloomington in 1821 as a blacksmith and forged the fish which has served as the weather vane for the Monroe County Courthouse since 1826. Marilyn was the fifth generation of the Seward family.

While serving as a teaching associate for the School of Business, Marilyn met Lt. Wayne Warden, Jr. (USAF) and they were married on June 8th, 1947. In addition to her husband, Marilyn is survived by her sister Nancy Seward Taylor (UHS '43), her four children, all IU graduates, and their spouses.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 10th, 2004, at the First United Church, 2420 E. Third St. in Bloomington. Private burial services will be at Dunn Cemetery on the Indiana University campus. Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home on Monday, February 9th, 2004 from 4:00-8:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the IU School of Music or the Monroe County Humane Association in care of Allen Funeral Home.
