3/12/11 | Marsha Jo (Mahaffey) Deckard, of
Bloomington, died March 11, 2011. She was born in Bloomington. A
graduate of University High School, she worked for numerous beauty
salons in the Bloomington area as a hairstylist and also worked for
several years with the Indiana Real Estate Certification Program as an
administrative assistant and registration coordinator. She especially
enjoyed taking the annual trips to Mexico and other warm climates to
help conduct seminars for the company. Marsha especially loved
doing for her family. She felt a pride in getting ready for holidays,
being the “hostess with the mostess” and preparing Christmas dinner.
She took pride in gardening around her home, attending little league
baseball games for the grandkids, knitting scarves and just doing
crafts. Anything to be more sociable was what she enjoyed. Her survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law; her longtime companion, Amy Holte of Bloomington; her parents, Richard and Velma Mahaffey; her sister, Sharon (UHS '65) Belcher and husband Chuck; two grandsons; and two nieces. |
3/08/10 | Meg Arnold Graham (writing from [email protected] - but try leaving .com it that doesn't work) says: "Would like to find out about a future Reunion for the class of 1968. Also would like email addresses of former class mates." |
1/15/10 | Beverly Watkins posts from Indianapolis: "Hi fellow UHS Graduates of 1968!!! Stay tuned...more info to come!! [email protected] |
11/15/09 | Chris Westland writes on Nov 14: "I will be visiting Bloomington with my sister (who was Class of 70) on Nov 15-16th 2009 and would like to catch up with old classmates. Please feel free to call me at 312 860 0587 if you would be around and would like to catch up -Chris" |
6/29/09 | Gregory Lane Mongold,
58, died unexpectedly Tuesday June 23 of an apparent heart attack while
riding his tandem bicycle with his wife Linda. He was a longtime math
teacher for the MCCSC and currently the Math department chair at
Bloomington High School North. He graduated from University High School
in 1968 where he played in the Take 5 band. He graduated from the
honors math program at I.U. in 1972 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and
then received his Master’s of Science from I.U. in 1982. His passion for bicycling and math were only second to the love and dedication towards his family and friends. He was known throughout the community as a devoted parent, son and husband, as well as a gifted teacher. He brought to his students his passion for mathematics and was known for using song and colorful T-shirts to gather his students into his love of mathematics. He was never too busy to help a friend, fix a bike, or just be there for his many friends. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda Martin Mongold, of Bloomington; his father; two sons; father-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother. |
5/14/09 | Sandy Lynch wrote: "I'm glad to see this webpage! A quick update: attended Oberlin College, then IU, taught briefly, spent a few years in publishing in New York City, got homesick for Bloomington, came back, went to work at the RCA television factory in employee relations, then spent 23 happy years at Ford/Visteon in Bedford in human resources. Wrote employee newsletters for nearly 30 years. And guess what, I'm producing a newsletter now for IU's Physical Plant department. Have a great husband of 20+ years, Jack Shelton, and four cats. Spend time with my parents who live in Bell Trace. |
6/10/08 | David Leffler writes: "After graduating from UHS in '68 I spent two years at IU and then joined the Navy in '70 during the Vietnam conflict. After four years touring the Far East, training and working with nuclear weapons, I returned to the US and worked for eight years as an administrator for Palmcrest Nursing Home in Santa Cruz, CA. I married Sandy Tompkins who was working on the Macintosh project at Apple and began working at Apple Computer in Cupertino, CA in 1983 on the first Apple Macintosh Test Team as a Test Engineer focusing MacPaint and on the LaserWriter project. Later I managed the HyperCard Test Team and various other Apple projects. I moved up to Manager of New Products in the User Programming Group before leaving Apple when Bill Atkinson asked me to lead the test group at General Magic. As "User Champion" I designed and built Video-based Usability Labs all over the world for our business partners (Sony in both Japan and Germany, Phillips Electronics in England, France Telecom, British Cable & Wireless, AT&T in New Jersey, OKI, Fujitsu and others). I wasn't home much and Sandy and I were amicably divorced. I left General Magic and moved to Paradise, CA when Tom Clancy (the author whom I had met when working for Apple) asked me to design computer based teleconferencing systems for the Kyle Foundation. The Kyle Foundation was an organization for little sick or badly burned kids who were home and in bed, generally looked after by distraught parents. Tom thought that we could give their kid a computer and video connect them right back into the classrooms. The Rand Corporation assisted up in determining that the one thing kids feared the most was falling behind in school. For little kids the ability to see and talk to all of their friends and beloved teacher everyday was priceless. I left the Kyle Foundation and created a business plan to open the Apple Macintosh Franchise in Chico. I called in a few favors and ran that business for a few years. I have finally semi-retired and am still living in Paradise, CA just a few miles above Chico. In the evening I still rewrite papers for the Chief Scientist at OKI, Nat Hosono in Tokyo, Japan, for his presentation to various IEEE and HCI conferences. These are mostly based on cutting edge Human Interface experiments using OKI designed medical emergency procedures, hand-held PDAs and kiosk based banking systems. Recently I rewrote his Doctoral Thesis and he gave me credit in his acknowledgments. I was greatly honored. I still have a few Macintosh office based clients these days but mostly I hike in the beautiful surrounding Sierra Foothill area nearly every day and love nothing more than to be away from computers and out in nature. Basically my life is idyllic and I wouldn't change a single second of my whole life as all my diverse experiences have brought me here." |
9/02/07 | Nancy Wayne Scott
(BHS '68) writes: "I went to University School for Kindergarten,
7th, 8th and 9th grades, but the cost to transfer was too high for my
parents so had to go to BHS for the rest of high school. It was
nice seeing so many people's names I remember. Even though I didn't
graduate from UHS, it would be nice if there was a secondary list
somewhere for those of us who went there and went to school/were on
Bloomington swim team/etc with kids form UHS, but who had to go to
another shool for some reason or other later on, but would like to have
contact. Also do you know anything about a page like this for
BHS? thanks. webmaster comment - We are happy to have anyone with a connection UHS register here. You were part of our lives, as we were of yours. Nancy is now listed and identified below as a BHS grad. If you'll look at the Home Page you will find links to pages for BHS (South and North) . They may help you find more info. |
7/27/07 | Michael McDonald Yoakam
of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at his home
surrounded by his wife, Caroline Beebe, and daughters Crystal Yoakam
and Genevieve Pritchard. He is preceded in death by his parents
Mary Bob and Dick Yoakam. He is survived by his brothers Rick Yoakam
(UHS '66) and Steve Yoakam (UHS '71) and sisters-in-law; a nephew and a
niece; and his mother-in-law; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins,
and extended family that he cherished dearly. Michael was one of the early managers and builders of the original Bloomingfoods on Kirkwood Ave. in Bloomington, then continued for a number of years as Campbell-Yoakam General Contractors, building and remodeling homes and offices in the greater Bloomington area. He shifted gears in 1992 after completing a Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications and worked as Director of Distance Education in Continuing Studies at Indiana University and later at North Carolina State University. He coordinated cooperative training programs with a coalition of universities in Russia and travelled there several times to establish technology for early classroom links between the U.S. and cities such as St. Petersburg, Moscow, as well as the MIR Space Station. Michael was an amazingly gentle man with fierce convictions about the power of peace and understanding as opposed to war and ignorance. He had a subtle off-key sense of humor which kept his family and friends in stitches, and a personal honesty and integrity that was admired by all. He loved swimming, gardening, and mowing on his tractor. He had a great talent for re-using and recycling materials in his homes and as a craftsman was a funky minimalist. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and fondly remembered by his friends and colleagues near and afar. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends commemorate Michael’s interests in learning, media and young people with a gift to the Harmony Education Center’s Youth Media Project. Please send contributions to P.O. Box 1787, Bloomington IN 47402. |

Greg Mongold writes "Regarding what I'm doing - I'm still teaching mathematics in the local schools: Bloomington HS South in particular. I also work with the other schools as the corporation's math curriculum coordinator. My wife and I are active bicycle riders. We began taking dance lessons two years ago - wish we had done that years ago. Our oldest son has graduated from IU and our youngest son is a sophomore at Purdue." |
4/8/05 |
Ann McDonald Clark writes: I spent two years at IU. Then I moved to Texas and graduated with a degree in Nursing from Texas Woman's University. I married at age 28 and spent the next 17 years traveling in the Army with my husband. We spent 7 years overseas. I have four children. My oldest daugher just graduated from IU with a degree in computer science and math. My middle daughter is a manager for a fine jewelry department in Bloomington. My third daughter and son are still at home in High School. We live in a multi-generational home (three separate living quarters) with my sister, and my aging mother. I am currently the director of Lactation Services for Bloomington Hospital. |
2/18/05 |
Stephen Burks writes: " I am currently an assitant professor of economics and management at the University of Minnesota, Morris, a small liberal arts college in the west central Minnesota prairie run by the University of Minnesota. My wife Laura and I have a daughter, 6, and a son, 3." |
10/14/04 |
Laura Gilligan Reed writes that Cathy McNamara Korenich died on Oct 12, 2004 at University Hospital in Cleveland. Laura had written that Cathy was waiting for a lung transplant. |
10/1/04 |
Hallie White Sepsi writes: "I spent four years at the University school as a member of the class of '68, when my father was stationed at N.A.D. Crane IN. He was then due to be transferred to a new base, which would have meant that I would be a senior in a new school (perish the thought!). So I took Jr.& Sr. English during my final year at UHS, and graduated early, with the class of '67. Made many wonderful friends in both classes. |
