About
the
University High School
Web Page and Mailing List
The mailing list and the web page were started at RootsWeb.com in March
2001 by Margaret Edmondson Olson (class of '52). In July
2002, the mailing list was moved to maddoc.net, but the web page
remains (for now) at RootsWeb.
What is RootsWeb?
RootsWeb is mainly a genealogy site, but had some non-genealogy mailing
lists until July 2002, including several for school alumni and college
alumni.
What is MadDoc?
Maddoc.net is run by a couple who were once on staff at RootsWeb with
Margaret. They host mailing lists and web sites and it's a
good place
to be.
How much does this cost?
Subscribing to the mailing list and participating on this web page
costs nothing. The web page is on Margaret Olson's RootsWeb
Freepages page, which, as it says, is free. The mailing list
started as part of the
"non-genealogy communities" at RootsWeb where it was free.
When the
non-genealogy lists were closed in 2002, the list was moved to another
server.
Margaret pays a very small amount to have resources on maddoc.net, but
the
cost of the UHS list is not going to be passed on to list members.
This stuff is free to the users.
Subscribers to the mailing list (when it was at
RootsWeb) got subscribed automatically to RootsWeb's weekly mailing
list, the
RootsWeb Review.
If you are interested in genealogy you may find those
newsletters interesting. If you are not interested, you can
remove yourself by following the instructions found in those
newsletters. Those subscriptions are no longer automatic now
that the list has moved to maddoc.net.
This web page will have banners both at the top and the
bottom. Compared to other sites I have visited,
like YahooGroups, the advertising and taglines are quite
reasonable. Let me know if something concerns you.
Why A Mailing List?
I didn't see any similar resources anywhere, so I decided to start the
mailing list so members of the class of '52 might talk to each other,
but it's bigger than just '52. Join in! The mailing
list is not
usually busy, but does allow announcements by email. If you
have something you want everyone on all classes to know, go ahead and
write. The
web page seems to be the busy part of this endeavor. Keep the
information coming!
The Class of '52 has a separate mailing list, too.
If you
are from '52 and are interested, contact
[email protected]
.
WhyRootsWeb?
I worked for RootsWeb until the end of February, 2001 so I know a bit
about it. I am using my freepages account at RootsWeb for
this. It costs me nothing, and I already know how to use it.
WhyMaddoc?
I worked with Dale and Bridgett and know they understand the mailing
lists as I have known them. They are people I know and trust
and
can ask questions of. Their site should be just fine for the
list.
If you'd like a mailing list or website and don't know where
to get
one, look at
www.maddoc.net .
What now?
I need contact addresses for different classes,
and if you have any history or photographs you want me to include, send
them to me. If you have ideas for things we should include,
let me know. If you have links to existing sites for UHS, let
me know that, too, and I'll add them. If you have genealogy
links for your family, put them on RootsWeb's WorldConnect.
Why
Register
There are links on the main page where we ask alumni and
faculty to register. When you register, your name and
hometown and email
address will be added to the web page for your class. We hope
that
by being there you may hear from people you knew at UHS. If
you want
to be removed, please contact Margaret
Olson . If you have additions or corrections,
please contact me. I want these lists to be useful.
The form asks for your class, address, phone number and
email address. I will use that information to update our database of
UHS alums and to
help your class contact you whenever they are planning a reunion.
The
addresses and phone numbers will never be placed on web pages or
provided
to anyone except the class representatives for your class.
To register, fill out this "Registration
Form ", or to change your information, use the "Change Form ".
Address Lists
Don Donham ('52) for several years kept a list on his computer of
addresses which were used to send the announcements of past All School
reunions through 1998, and the list was in need of updating.
This mailing list/web page is being used to help do that and to help
individual classes update their lists. The addresses
collected are being used to inform people about an All School Reunion
which will be held in October 2005. Thanks to
everyone who has helped update these addresses.
Reunion committees from each class update their lists
from time
to time. They probably have the best information.
If you want
to know about your class, try contacting your committee. You can also
email
me, and I will contact your class rep. We need to
be concerned about keeping lists in the hands of people who have a
legitimate
reason to have them. I will be glad to share what I have with
classes,
and hope that they will share with me. This has worked pretty
well
since the web page was started. I would like feedback,
though. Let
me know what you think.
I can be reached at [email protected].
