Israel Knapp, c. 1734-1796

Israel Knapp, circa 1734-1796

Someone chopped down his family tree

1. ISRAEL2 KNAPP was born 1733-1734 in Phillips Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY, and died 11-7-1796 in Phillips Precinct, Dutchess Co., NY. He married MARY HANNION c. 177

Israel Knapp was born about 1733-1734, probably in Dutchess County New York (1) His occupation was that of a miller and a farmer

Mary Hennion or Hannion was probably born about 1745-1750 in New York State. While here ancestry remains unknown, she was perhaps descended from Nathaniel Peters Hennion, a French Huguenot who came to America in the 1600's and married Anneken Ackerman (2).

Israel and Mary were married in about 1770, and settled in Phillipstown, Dutchess County New York. Both were were members of the Dutch Reformed Church, and many of their childen were baptised in the church of that denomination in Fishkill, Dutchess County. Israel and Mary were baptised into this same church on November 28, 1786.

During the American Revolution, Israel served as a Captain in the Dutchess County Militia from Phillips Precinct (3).

Israel Knapp made a will on August 1, 1795, as a resident of Phillips Precinct. The will mentioned but did not name his children and stated that his wife, Mary, was to manage everything until the younger children came of age.

Israel died on November 7, 1796 at the age of 62 (4) and Mary followed him in death on January 14, 1797. Israel's will was proved on February 3, 1797.

Both are thought to be burried in Fishkill.

(1) The family bible of his son David Knapp records that he was 62 when he died in 1796. The "Nicholas Knapp Genealogy" states that he was born in 1727, apparently an error based upon the death date given. See (3) below.

(2) Anneken was the daughter of David Ackerman. Among his descendants was Thomas Alva Edison.

(3) The geography is somewhat confusing, due to the redrawing of County boundaries that has taken place since Israel was alive. Philipstown (with one l) is now in Putnam County, although it is very close to the border with Dutchess. Fishkill is just across this border. About 10 miles north of Fishkill is a very small area called Knapps Corner (not even big enough to be plural) which may or may not have been connected to our Knapp family. Phillips Precinct no longer exists.

(4) The "Nicholas Knapp Genealogy" gives his date of death as November 7, 1789, at age 62. This was apparently the author's interpretation of the David Knapp bible, the transcript of which contains an obvious error, giving the date of death as November 7, 1769. A. A. Knapp must have felt this should actually be 1789, but my view is that it should be 1796 due to the will mentioned above which indicates Israel died between August 1795 (when he made the will) and February 1797 (when it was proved).
