Our Family's Century

1960-1980

HEY DUDE, ITS THE 60'S AND 70'S, YA GOTTA HAVE A LOUD BACKGROUND FOR THIS STUFF MAN! ALL WE ARE SAYIN IS GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!

IN THE DECADES OF VIETNAM, WATERGATE AND DISCO, OUR FAMILY SAW ITS SHARE OF LONG-HAIRED HIPPIES (SEE PICS OF MY DAD BELOW) BUT SOME OF US STAYED "SQUARE" TOO.

1960: Helen Dombrauskas Burkauskas dies in Rochester. She herself did not know her date of birth, and all efforts by family to find it thus far have failed. She was probably about 84 years old, and had been confined to bed for two years. (Right: Portraits of Helen are rare; this one was taken in 1917.)

1961: Povilas Burkauskas (Paul Berke/Burkow) dies in Rochester at the age of 76. A lifelong drunk, he was never a very good provider for his family. About the only good thing that can be said of him is that he quit drinking when he realized he was dying ("I no need that anymore," he said.) (Right: Paul in 1917).

1964: Joseph Bartash dies in Rochester, at the age of 81. He had led the hard life of an immigrant, but had learned to read and write and had made a good home for his family. Active in St. George's Lithuanian Church, he was secretary of one of the church groups for many years.

According to Lithuanian custom, he was photographed in his casket. Shall I post that?!
1969: Paul Miller and Lori Berke graduate from Bishop Kearny High School. They know eachother, but are not close. Also in 1969, Paul's brother Mark is ordained a Priest and his other brother Pete gets married. (Right: Paul as a freshman).

1973: Paul Miller and Lori Berke graduate from college. He went to Dayton, she went to SUNY Brockport. (Right: Paul in 1973).

 c. 1975: Paul quits his job at Sibley's Department Store to become a full time musician. The highlight of his career was playing "I Shall Be Released" to prisoners at the Monroe County Jail. I know that this is not a very important event, but I needed an excuse to use the photo at right of Paul on his last day of work at Sibley's. Thankfully, both his sense of fashion and his career have improved (not to mention the haircut!). He gave up music a few years after he started, although he and his former partner still meet for an annual rehersal "whether they need it or not."

1979: Veronika Gudelis Bartash dies in Rochester at about the age of 89.

1980: Paul Miller at Lori Berke are married in Rochester. They had met at one of Pauls concerts.
