7. Juozapas BARTASEVICIUS "Joseph Bartash" 1 (Teofilis , ) was born on 15 Feb 1883 in Uzventis, Lithuania. He died on 22 Nov 1964 in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY.

Jouzapas had absolutely no education as a child--there was little available where he grew up. Yet when he decided to come to America, he was suddenly seized with a desire to learn. He taught himself to read and write, working by candle light and getting help from some people he knew who were literate. Once in the United States, he attended several night school classes and was able to write many letters back to Lithuania. His one surviving signature--from his 1916 certificate of citizenship--is written in a smooth, firm hand. In old age Juozapas used to muddle his way through the paper every day; he kept a dictionary by his side and was always looking up English words that he did not know.

Jouzapas Bartasevicius (or Joseph Bartash as he was known in America), is said to have come to the United States in 1903. Like many of his siblings, he first settled in Rumford, Oxford County Maine before coming to Rochester, Monroe County New York.

He and his wife Veronika first lived in a four family home at 19 Vose Street in Rochester; among the other occupants was Joseph's brother and his family, who co-owned the house. Later, Joseph and his family moved to a small house at 5 Dudley Street, where they remained until his death.

Upon arriving in Rochester, Joseph worked for a time in the optical division of Bausch and Lomb, as an inspector. He later got a job as a cabinet maker for a company called Stromberg-Carlson. He had a great deal of skill with wood; he built a porch for his home as well as several cabinets that are still in the posession of the family. During World War Two, he was in the habit of carving small wooden skunks with Hitler's face and the flags of the axis nations painted on them anf giving them out as gifts. From a surviving example it appears that he had at least som artistic talent--and that he was most definitely against the Nazis!

Although Joseph took great prde in his Lithuanian heritage, he became a United States citizen in 1916.
He was one of the founding members of St. George's Lithuanian Church in Rochester and was active in St. George's Society as well as serving as secretary of the St. Peter and Paul Society of that parish for many years.
Both he and his wife are buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

A son-in-law, Maurice "Andy" Anderson stated that Jonas arrived in New York on 9/26/1889 in a typed letter. More than likely this was a typo for 1898 or 99, which is the traditional date of his arrival. He settled in Rumford, Oxford County Maine, where he worked in the paper mills.
