Notes for Rev. Magne Langeland
Magne Langeland was born in Big Canoe, Iowa, March 24th, 1954. His parents were Magne H. and Gertrude Langeland.

After his common school eduction he attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa from 1869 to 1875 and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri from 1875 to 1878.

He was ordained Minister in 1878 and appointed pastor of the Lutheran Church at Cresco, Iowa where he remained for 5 years.

In 1883 he came to Rothsay as Pastor of Hamar and Hedemarken churches. He served these two congregations for a period of 38 years. He also served as pastor of Campbell and Manston churches for many years.

Shortly after Mrs. Langeland’s death which occurred September 28th, 1931, Rev. Langeland became seriously ill, and passed away in November 1921, just seven weeks following the death of Mrs. Langeland. The funeral was held November 16, 1921 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamar Church and at Hedemarken Church at 2:00 p.m.

During his many years of service he never faltered in his duties and traveled many miles in stormy weather to hold a service, meet with the confirmants, or make a sick call.

Rev. Langeland kept a written account of each trip and had traveled a total of 75,000 miles with horses, buggy, and sled.

He was beloved by his parishioners and all who knew him and held in highest esteem by the whole community.

His life was consecrated to God and his Country and his demise was a great loss to the entire community.

He was survived by six children: Gertrud, (Mrs. O. H. Ekeren) who died Sept. 1944, John, who died in 1949, Anna (Mrs. J. C. Serkland) Eunice, (Mrs. Rev. Strandjord), Esther (Mrs. Amundson), Ruth (Mrs. B. L. Hudtloff).

Mrs. Langeland (nee Miss Sigrid Pederson) was born in Wisconsin in 1861. While a child she made her home with her Aunt Mrs. Johnson in Iowa. Later, Mrs. Johnson made her home with the Langelands at Hedemarken.

June 22, 1880 she was married at Cresco, Iowa to Rev. M. Langeland.

In the fall of 1883 they came to Rothsay, Minnesota, Rev. Langeland having accepted a call as Pastor in Hedemarken and Hamar Congregations. The parsonage was located near the Hedemarken church, and it was here that Rev. Langeland brought his wife to make their home.

Mrs. Langeland soon endeared herself in the hears of the entire community. A visit at the parsonage was one to always be remembered because of the hospitality shown.

She was a true helpmate to her husband. She also served as organist in both churches for many years. As organist of the Hamar congregation she endured many hardships as the mode of travel in early days was by team. She was always willing to help at all community and church activities.

Seven children were born to Rev. and Mrs. Langeland. A son, Walter, died in infancy, Gertrude (Mrs. O. H. Ekeren) passed away September 1844, John, passed away in 1949, Anna (Mrs. J. C. Serkland), Eunice (Mrs. Rev. Strandjord), Esther (Mrs. Amundson) Ruth (Mrs. B. L. Hudtloff).

Mrs. Langeland was afflicted with cancer of the stomach from which she suffered for some time. Her death occurred Wednesday, September 28, 1921 at Fergus Falls. She was 60 years of age at the time of her death. Her funeral was held at Hamar Church October 3, at 10:30 a.m. and at Hedemarken Church at 1:00 p.m. the same day.

Mrs. Langeland was a woman of sterling character and her death was a great loss to the community.
