Place names

Brief descriptions of places including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Mid North, Murraylands, South East and Yorke Peninsula areas of South Australia are provided on this site.

In 1917, During the First World War, many German or German-sounding place names in Australia were changed.  The use of German-derived place names was seen as being at odds to the war efforts and offended the sensibilities of many in the Australian population at the time.

In some cases, the original names have since been restored.

Names of such towns in South Australia and in Victoria that appear in on this site are listed on the linked pages.  In general, the place name used in my database for births, baptisms, deaths and marriages is that which prevailed at the time of the event.  However, the current place name is used in the case of burials.
