THE MOBLEY HISTORY Printed By THE TATTNALL JOURNAL Reidsville, Georgia 30453 (1) Page 2 = Copy of Mobley Coat of Arms Arms: Argent, two chevrons gules, on a canton of the 2nd a cross crosslet fitchee of the first. Crest: A demi-lady in the character of justice, holding in the dexter hand a pair of scales. Colour Meanings: Argent: (silver) The metal argent represents peace and security. It also signifies everlasting charity and clear conscience. Gules: (red) Military valour and courage. Red is the warrior's colour and symbolises the desire to serve your country to the utmost of your ability, to shed blood if necessary. Character Meanings: Chevron: The chevron is significant of protection, and was awarded to one who had achieved some notable enter- prise. It represents either the saddle of a war horse or the roof-tree of a house, and has sometimes been given to those who have built churches or fortresses, or who have accomplished some work of faithful service. Canton: The canton is a very high and honourable bearing and was granted by the sovereign as a reward for eminent service. Cross: The cross crosslet fitchess was used by pilgrims in their travels, when they could not avail themselves of village churches or market crosses; they therefore stuck their little crosses in the ground as a preliminary to their daily devotions. The soldiers of the crusading armies are said to have used their sword hilts of this purpose. (6) THE MOBLEYS AND THEIR CONNECTIONS How the Name Mobley Originated By William Woodward Dixon It was during the Crusades in England, about the year 1189, when the Crusade was well under way. Someone detected a small mob gathering just outside the camp. A man by the name of Blaunt went to investigate the furious gathering. He found that this mob had planned to revolt and do hurt to the king. (We would say "harm" or injury instead of hurt.) This man, Blaunt (pronounced Blunt) calmed the mob, or quelled the mob, and reorganized it into a fine fighting force for the king. (According to the dates this was Richard the Lionhearted.) The king told Blaunt that because he could lay the mob he was changing his name to Mobberly, now spelled Mobley. (We still use the word "lay" in the same manner as the above, sometimes. An illustration of this is seen when someone uses the expression, "I think that the wind will lay tonight." (be calm, etc.) There is a Parish in Chester County England named Mobberly. John Mobberly, son of Augustine Mobberly was Lord of this Parrish, in the reign of King John (he signed the Magna Carta) whose reign was from 1199 to 1216. From: Media Research Bureau, Wash., D. C. Know Your Name By John C. Downing Mobley There is a place, name and a variant spelling of Mobberley--a parish in Cheshire, England. This place was spelled Motburlege in the 1086 Domesday Book and Modberleg in 1260. It is from the old Saxon Gemotbeorh meaning "clearing with assembly mound". This mound or high place could have been used as either a place of worship or other tribal gatherings. Some of the early Englishmen who lived at or near this place were Patrick Moberlegh, 1220 and William de (of) Modborlegh, both of East Cheshire 1565 and John Moberley was baptized in the same church in 1568. The will of Edward Mobberley, yeoman of Norley, was probated in Chester in 1585. Richard Moberly and Jane Adams were married in St. George's Church, London 1756. Burke's General Armory describes the Mobberly and the Moberly or Mobdurly arms. The 1790 census records list the spelling Mobely in Maryland, North and South Carolina and Virginia. Moberly in South Carolina and Mobly in Maryland and South Carolina. (7) THE MOBLEY FAMILY IN AMERICA By William Woodward Dixon [Pages 11,12,13] "Encouraged by Charles Fox in the year 1680, a new sect had arisen in England styling themselves Friends, but called in dersion by all other religious denominations, Quakers. William Penn was one of these, a nobleman who had been four times imprisoned. He petitioned for a grant of land in America with the result that history tells. Connected with the first settlement of Pennsylvania is the love story of the first Moberly, now spelled Mobley, who came to this country and from whom our family descended. He came direct from England with William Penn. It has been thought for a long time that this Moberly was the son of a baronet. He was descended from a baronet, Sir Edward Moberly, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. This Moberly had three sons; one succeeded to the title and Estates and became Sir Edward Moberly. He had one brother who went into the church and became a bishop; the third bought a commission in the English Army. His name was William, he went to India, amassed a fortune, returned and bought an estate near Sheffield. His son Edward purchased a large estate in Cheshire and was a country gentleman." 1. Sir Edward-Lived in Queen Elizabeth's time (1533-1603). 2. Three Sons-Sir Edward Moberly II, succeeded to titled estate. Another son became a bishop in the church {of England). William went to India, returned, bought an estate near Sheffield. 3. Edward - Son of William, above, Cheshire Country Gentleman. 4. William-Son of Edward, above. Married Phoebe Lovejoy and had eight sons. No known daughter. Four sons came South. 5. Sons of William above-One settled in North Carolina. One settled in Edgefield County, S. C. One settled in Lancaster County, S. C. One settled in Fairfield County, S. C. THE MOBLEY FAMILY REUNION The Mobley Family Reunion grew out of a birthday celebration for Nellie Mobley, widow of John Washington Mobley. The birthday get-togethers had been going on for a number of years when, on June 18, 1954 her daughter, Bertha Mobley Ludlam (later Morris} suggested that it would be nice to have a family reunion where all members of the Mobley clan would meet together and renew fellowship or get acquainted. (8) The first Reunion was held the next year at Stafford Memorial Park in Hinesville, Ga. On July 19; 1959, Clayton Mobley was elected Historian. Inez DeLoach was elected, July 16, 1961. Interest in family relationships began to grow and soon Inez Mobley DeLoach, first daughter of Nellie Mobley, began digging into old records, talking to living Mobleys, visiting cemeteries, inquiring of Mobleys she met by chance or talked to on the phone, and presently had a portfolio of information to include the family of James N. (son of Edward) and Elizabeth {Grandma Betsy) Peacock, who their children married, and many of their names, spouses and children. Mrs. Lucille Anderson Mobley, wife of Rev. Cleon Mobley, drew a huge {some six feet tall) tree on cardboard; its trunk representing James and Elizabeth, and its main branches, their children. Secondary branches she drew for James' grandchildren and tertiary branches for their children, etc. From year to year much new information as was collected was entered on the branches until, now, some James N. branches are relatively complete, while some are sparsely leaved and others have no information at all. When Arthur Mobley, brother of Cleon was appointed Family Historian, July 18, 1965, he set about diligently to inspect old records, visit cemeteries, talk to living Mobleys, and correspond with other historians and added immeasurably to the historical data of the Mobley family. He managed to obtain information dating back to the time King Richard the Lionhearted. As much as has been done, we have hardly scratched the surface of what may be known about the Mobleys. But it is no time to get the existent records put down in permanent form and it is sincerely hoped that this, the First Edition of the Mobley Family History, will encourage family members, wherever they are, to collect their family data and submit it to the Liberty County, Georgia, Mobley Family Reunion, Hinesville, 31313, so that a second, much more complete document may be published in the near future. (13) LOVE STORY OF WILLIAM MOBERLY "On one occasion the father, Edward Moberly, was about to go on a trip to London with one of his dependents, Adam Varnadore. He called his son William to superintend the planting of some apple trees in his absence in a certain field during his stay in London. The son objected to the spot in which he was directed to plant the trees, saying the site selected did not suit him, and the trees should be planted elsewhere. The father insisted and enjoined that the trees should be put out as he directed while away. With that the elder Moberly and the elder Varnadore went on to London. Adam Varnadore had a son, Adam, the companion of young William Moberly. William Moberly, the father, and Adam Varnadore, the father, returned from London to find the trees set out against the wishes of Mr. Moberly. In concert both fathers pulled up a scion of the trees with which each whipped his own son soundly. The boys, enraged under the lash, ran away together. They got into a ship belonging to William Penn, the founder of the colony of Pennsylvania. On board Penn's ship was a beautiful girl, Phoebe Lovejoy, a governess of Penn's household. She was a girl of good family, educated and refined. Phoebe Lovejoy was a Quakeress, and to her must be ascribed the oft repeated statement that the Mobleys have Quaker blood in their veins. In tales around the fireside, down from one generation to another, Phoebe is said to have been a relative of Penn or his wife, and that she was as accomplished as she was fair and beautiful. She and William Moberly loved in secret, and when reaching America were married without the knowledge of Penn, the Proprietor of the Province of Pennsylvania, and of course all-powerful. Fearing his displeasure, not to speak of his anger against young Moberly, they fled to the Indians and concealed themselves among them. This is not strange for the Indians lived toward Penn and his people in the spirit of their chief's address to the colonists, "We will live in love with Penn and his children as long as the moon and sun shall shine." That promise was never broken. When William Moberly landed in Pennsylvania he was 18 years old. After the marriage and uncertain life to two years, he moved to a point in Maryland near what was called a few years ago Point Tobacco. He and his wife settled down in that state and raised eight sons. How many daughters we cannot find out. We cannot ascertain whether there were any daughters at all. (14) When the youngest son was five years old and after the death of this wife whom he deeply mourned, William Moberly, stricken with loneliness and sorrow, craved the sight of father, the old home, and native land. He returned to England, sad at heart and much changed in physical appearance. He had left a beardless youth; he returned a bronzed, hardened pioneer of the New World. So great was the transformation of physique, of manner and expression, that his father not only did not know him but pronounced him as an impostor. The matter of his identity the father could not for the moment be brought to believe. He had sought him for over a third of a century and as one whom his enfeebled eyes would never behold again. William Moberly with the tales of his childhood, of how he incurred his father's displeasure about the apple tree scions, his flogging, his running away with young Adam Varnadore; and at once going to the window and pointing out the orchard and the very spot he was whipped, convinced his father that he, indeed, was his long absent boy, whereupon it may be imagined there was a scene of affection and reconciliation . William Moberly remained but a short time in England and returned to Maryland, died there and was the first of our Mobley ancestors whose body, given to him in the Old World, returned to its Mother Earth in the New." (15) DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD MOBLEY [As researched by Inez Mobley DeLoach and Arthur Chester Mobley] Edward Mobley lived in Effingham County. He was born in the late 1700's and when he died in Effingham in 1820 he left the following minor children: James N. Mobley [1810] Nancy Mobley Levy E. Mobley T. Mobley Matilda Mobley His daughter, Lydia, had married Burris Brewer on November 25, 1819, according to records of Effingham. The records of Jones Creek Baptist Church, Liberty County (later Long County) show that they were granted a letter to a church in Hamilton County, Fla. In Hamilton County they raised a family. One daughter.was named Mary; she married a Geiger. George M. went to see Lydia, and met Catherine Caroline (Katy) Powell and married her. George was a son of James N. The minor children of Edward Mobley (whose wife was apparently deceased) were made wards of Lewis Lanier on April 20, 1820. Samuel Ridgedale was his security in the sum of eleven hundred and fifteen dollars. Page 30, Book 2, Miscellaneous Records of Effingham County 1819-1834, Ordinary's Office, Effingham Co., Ga. At a Court of Ordinary held at Springfield and for the County of Effingham on Monday 3rd day of July, 1820 appeared Mr. Lewis Lanier and asked leave as guardian of the orphan children of Edward Mobley to sell four Negroes belonging to the estate of the late Edward Mobley; also the rest of the personal property so that a distribution may be made among the orphan children. Book 2 further shows that on Monday the 7th day of May, 1821 Mr. Lewis Lanier appeared and entered into bond with Mr. Henry Strickland as his security in the further sum of two thousand two hundred dollars as guardian of the minor children of Edward Mobley deceased. On pages 37-38, Minutes of Effingham County, Book 3, 1827-1950, the following is recorded: On the first day of March 1830 on the complaint of James Mobley, a minor heir of Edward Mobley deceased, stating that Lewis Lanier his guardian is mismanaging his estate, it is ordered that the said Lewis Lanier do appear at the next regular term of court on the first Monday. A later entry showed that on the complaint of James N. Mobley minor heir of Edward Mobley deceased that Lewis Lanier his guardian has not attended the court agreeable to notice. It is ordered that the clerk cite the said Lewis Lanier to attend the next regular term to give (16) an account of his actings and doings as guardian of minors, otherwise the court will proceed as the law directs. On May 30, 1831 James N. Mobley applied for letters of administration on the estate and effects of Levy E. Mobley late of Effingham County, deceased. Issued citation admonishing all concerned to come forward and file their objection if any they have, otherwise letters of administration will be granted the applicant within the time prescribed by law. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Liberty County History shows Edward Mobley supplying horses and saddles to the United States Government, November 22, 1783 for Colonel Jackson's Corps. Mobley (18) JAMES N. MOBLEY James N. Mobley was born in 1810. The earliest record we have was after the death of Edward in 1820, when James, Nancy, Levy E., and Matilda, minor children of Edward, were made wards of Lewis Lanier. James was still described as a minor when he complained to Effingham County Court on March 1, 1830 that his guardian was mismanaging the estate. But on May 30, 1831, he applied to the court for letters of administration on the estate and effects of his brother, Levy E. who apparently died in 1831. So James became 21 some time between those two appearances in court. James N. Mobley and Elizabeth (Betsey) Peacock were married in Liberty County on January 17, 1832. She was the daughter of Samuel Peacock. James gave Effingham as his home. The Liberty County records also show that he was an extensive landowner. Deeds for 1900 acres were found and there was at least one more tract, since the first one was bounded on one side by lands of James N. Mobley. He was a member of Gum Branch Baptist' Church and was a delegate to the Baptist Union Association for five consecutive years as follows: (From Minutes of the Baptist Union Association) Church County Date Tom's Creek Liberty September, 1860 Oak Grove Bulloch September, 1861 Hines Meeting House Emanuel September, 1862 Mount Zion Tattnall September, 1863 Watermelon Creek Tattnall September, 1864 Tradition says that there were 17 children in the James N. Mobley family. A John Mobley who fought in the Civil War and was probably killed, is thought to be a son of James, but this is unsubstantiated. Known children include: Albert, Nancy, Matilda, Samuel E., William I., Mary Elizabeth, Lucy Ann, James A., Richmond D., Sara Penelope, Lavinia Caroline, Hiram Jesse, Martha Eveline, George Madison and Joe Cephas. (1) 1874 Susan Cornelia Wells b. Nov. 19, 1856. She has 22 brothers and sisters. William and Cornelia lived in a log cabin on a farm in Liberty Co. (edge of Ft. Stewart) near Hinesville, Ga. Before their family grew to 12 children, they cut big pine trees and the sawmill made them lumber to build barns, stables, and an 8-room house with lightening rods on top. (27) They raised cows, hogs, chickens, corn, cane, potatoes, cotton and planted a vegetable garden. From the cotton they made pillows, mattresses and spun thread for cloth weaving and knitted socks. The boys helped their father rob bee hives for honey in the spring and chipped pine boxes for turpentine. Their double team wagon-took the family to Gum Branch Baptist Church once a month. When William's health kept him from working the farm, he drove a horse and buggy selling Bibles and religious books house to house while the rest of the family took care of the chores. She d. Dec. 8, 1960; he d. Sept. 29, 1969; both bd. Elim Baptist Church Cemetery, Long Co. There were six teachers at Taylors Creek School; Mr. W. L. Flannagan, principal, Miss Grace Martin, Miss Tempie Reynolds (now deceased), Miss Dorothy Hodges (deceased), Mrs. W. L. Flannagan and Miss Grace Rimes. (41) The yearly main event at Taylors Creek was Methodist Church Camp Meeting, held two weeks every fall. Everyone looked forward to this and families, friends and relatives camped on the grounds. Services were held day and night with gospel singing and many preachers preaching by bon fires and lamp lights. A school bus picked up the school children and returned them to the camp in the afternoon. The community had three stores. The Post Office was in Mr. Jack Martin's store and the Barber Shop was in Mr. Ed. Martin's store. The barber was Mr. Charlie Strickland who now resides in Hinesville; When there were no customers in the store the young people would move the chairs back and dance on Saturday nights. There was only one church, the Methodist, which everyone attended. Sunday afternoons they would gather at the home of Mrs. Bonnie Elder for fellowship and sing while she played the piano. Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Porter owned and operated the third store and had a turpentine still. The main recreation was the croquet games played across from Mr. Jack Martin's store most afternoons and especially Saturday. On Friday nights the young people would play bridge at Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin's home. Memories like these you don't forget. In 1939-1940 all the families who lived in and around Taylors Creek and Willie, Ga. (another small community about 6 miles away) were notified that they had to move out to make room for the big Army base, Camp Stewart (now Ft. Stewart). As the government bought homes and land the people began to move, some with heavy hearts and some to later reap better incomes. Christopher and Julia bought a home at Crescent, Ga., on the coast, and lived there several years before moving to Hinesville where most of their family had settled. Each year a reunion is held for the people who lived in Willie and Taylors Creek. There was usually a barbecue at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marcus May but since his death the reunion has been moved to Beulah Baptist Church in Bryan County where Harry Sikes is the president. There are different religions in this family-Baptist, Methodist and Catholic. All are avid sportsmen and enjoy hunting, fishing and camping together. Just one big happy Mobley family! 1. Tom's father died when he and his two brothers were quite young. Tom and Harry Williams came to live with the Clarence Mobleys for a time. Harry returned to his mother but Tom remained with his uncles' household until his graduation from Bradwell Institute in 1940. World War II was upon our Nation and Tom enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps. His was a brilliant career. He saw combat duty in the South Pacific and nearly gave his life for his country on Guadalacanal when the Japanese almost over-ran the island. He retired from the Marine Corps and lives in Warner Robins, Ga., with his family. (See family listed under Fannie Williams). Tom received his B.A. degree from Georgia College, Milledgeville, Ga., and is employed in the Civil Service Supply System at Warner Robins Air Force Base. He is a Baptist deacon and a very active worker in Gideon's International. This branch of the family tree has made a substantial contribution to society. Christian principles established early in the home have (49) affected for the better all who have been touched by it. Soon the old house will be sold but memories both good and bad will remain. Georgia remarried after the death of Marion to D. F. Wells now buried in Wells Cemetery. Georgia d. Sept. 8, 1894 during childbirth at the age of 36 years. After the death of his mother, Georgia Groover Mobley Wells, (57) Stanton had little incentive to remain at his new home, so he began making plans to leave. He recounts how his step-father offered him a farm and mules if he would stay, but he replied, "I must be where the wheels are turning", giving an indication even in his teens that he desired work with machinery. This teen-age dream became a life-time reality, for he became a machinist and continued at that trade until his retirement at about age 72. Until his retirement he worked a full schedule each day. Stanton left Liberty County at about the age of 16. He did not remember distinctly. For a while he worked for his grandparents, but they would not give him any of the fruits of his labors, so he left with friends for awhile. He traveled to Savannah, Georgia where he worked in the boiler room of the DeSoto Hotel without pay. He finally was given a job there in that position. During the day he milked and delivered milk, rising at 3:00 a.m. each day. From there he went to Sylvania, Ga., made bricks and worked in the gin houses (cotton gins), also in an oil mill, for about 5 years. Stanton moved to Atlanta, Ga. and worked in an oil mill. After a time he moved back to Sylvania and worked for Millhaven Company for about a year. In 1908 Stanton moved to Fayetteville, Ga., to work in an oil mill. While there he became strangely drawn toward two sisters- actually half-sisters who worked in the post office in Fayetteville where their father was postmaster. The two young ladies were Georgia and Irene Kitchens, daughters of J. W. Kitchens. Stanton dated the sisters alternately, but finally Georgia called upon him to make up his mind between the two of them.- He did-he married the other one, Lola Irene Kitchens. Stanton relates several humorous experiences with regards to his romance, courtship and marriage. Since Stanton was already 30 years of age before his marriage, it was felt by the father, J. W. Kitchens that surely this man must have a wife and family somewhere. He could not imagine a man that old not being married. In order to capitalize on the situation, Stanton turned to his newly acquired bride on their wedding night and asked, "Did you know that I have a living wife?" His new wife sprang from the bed and grabbed a broom and started for him and shouted, "Where is she? I'll kill you and her!" Whereupon Stanton shouted, "Why, you of course. You don't think I married a dead wife, do you?" During Stanton and Irene's courtship the father would indicate it was time for Stanton to leave by throwing a pair of shoes down the steps. One night Stanton was pestering Irene for a goodnight kiss, and finally Irene became very angry and said, "If you don't leave me alone I'll go and tell Papa to bring his shotgun!" Stanton replied, "Go ahead. Tell him to bring his ole gun. I'm not afraid of him or his gun! " Irene said, "Well I will." She left the front porch and went into the house and told her father that Stanton wanted to see his new shotgun, (58) so the father, wanting to show off his new shotgun, proceeded to the porch with gun in hand. As soon as Stanton saw the gun he did not bother to go down the steps-he leaped over the banister and into the bushes and hit the ground running Stanton toll it for a joke and his wife denied it, that they became engaged as she was sitting in his lap on the front porch and she was teasing him by asking, "You don't love me." Where upon he replied, "Sure I do" She asked again, "You don't love me enough to marry me! " He replied again, "Sure I do! " She supposedly jumped up and shouted, "I'll run tell Papa we're engaged " At any rate, Lola Irene Kitchens and Stanton Alonzo Mobley were m. Dec. 22, 1910. Sorry we did not have access to all genealogy of the Mobley descendants who have helped this world be a better place to live in with their attributes. Many will be born and many will pass into eternity before this book will be published. But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; wilt favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield. Psalms 5:11-12 (103) -------------------------------END OF BOOK------------------------------ OBITUARY Mrs. Mary Peacock died May 2nd, 1881, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Mobley, in Liberty county, Ga., at the advanced age of 98 years. She was confined to her room near nine years, and suffered much from old age and afflictions. She had been a member of the Baptist church for over fifty years, and died trusting in the Lord. She was the mother of nine children; she had about fifty-two grand-children, and, as far as we can learn, 157 great-grand-children, and forty known of the fourth generation. Some have long since gone before her, but to those yet behind be the memory of her who is now failed to be as a beckoning hand to lead you and those who loved her, to a higher life in Christ. Children, prepare to meet your mother, Friends, prepare to meet her, too, Be you ever also ready When the Master calls for you. Meet her where life's tree is blooming - Meet her on the other shore; Meet her where the Saviour calls you - Meet her where you'll part no more. Where the angel's harps are tuning, and the loud hosannas ring; Death, oh death, where now thy victory, Grave, oh grave, where now thy sting! J. D.
