1987 TRIP TO ENGLAND July 4-16, 1987, Trip to England with Cambridge Studies Program sponsored by the University of Mississippi Law School. July 6, 1987 visited University Library at Cambridge. This is a fabulous place, requiring more time than I had. Fairbairn's Crests: Plate 183.2 lists Mobberley Crest. There was no explanation. Burke's Landed Gentry 1972, v. 3 p. 659: Lists Richard Moberly of Knutsford & London, Born 25 September, 1725. Knutsford Parish joins Mobberley Parish in Cheshire. Victoria History of Chester, 1972, v. 111 p 103 recites that Quakers were established at Mobberly. No further information. July 9, 1987 at University Library, Cambridge. Misc. Lancashire & Cheshire Records, v. IV 1901: Will of Mobberley, George, of Plumley Parish, Great Budworth, Cheshire. v. VIII lists Sir Ralph (p. 30-31); William (p. 30 & 114). "Wilmus de Modburlegh vice comes cestr. 1341 cepit in us [sic] uxor Matilda Postea Nupt. Jo Dumvile Radus de Modburlegh Miles.' Ormerod's History of Cheshire filmstrips of several pages were ordered. I was told that they would arrive several months hence. Perhaps they can be printed. July 13, 1987, at Mobberley, Cheshire. Went by train from Harrogate. Visited with Rector of St. Wilfrid's Church, Michael Graham, Tony O'Connor, the church treasurer, Mr. Davies, the organist, and Mr. Gittins, the bell ringer. Had lunch at the Pluck and Flail pub. Nothing new was learned. Some pictures were taken of the church and the stocks, where Mobleys possibly spent some time repenting their sins. July 15, 1987, at London. Quaker Library, Euston Road, listed in phone book. Easily accessible by subway. A search was made with the help of the librarian. Not a single Mobley found who had ever been a quaker. Society of Genealogists 14 Charterhouse Buildings is listed in the phone book and easily accessible by subway. Note new address. Microfiche Cheshire, #143 lists Mobberrley, William, b. 17 Nov. 1669, son of Thomas, in Frodsham Parish, Cheshire, among others. There is also listed William, son of Edward, Nov. 9, 1623, and Edward, son of William, Aug. 10, 1593. Also listed were Thomas Mobberley, son of Thomas, Mar. 25, 1669, and Thomas, son of Elizabeth Mobberley, illegitimate, Mar. 6, 1710. East Cheshire, Past and Present, lists the usual Mobberley, Patrick, Matilda, William, Cicely, which could be source of "Sicily" name for daughters. The Oresby arms of Gawsworth are the same as the Mobberly arms except the canton does not have the cross. "Argent, two chevrons and a canton gules" or silver shield with two red chevrons and a red canton. I was unable to find the connection, if any. College of arms, Mansion House, Queen Victoria Street, is listed in the phone book and near a subway station. Has not been visited. Time ran out. Conclusions: 1. Probably the Mobleys were not quakers. 2. Probably the Mobleys came from Cheshire as Dixon wrote. However the connection with Mobberley Parish is remote, because of removal to other parishes in Cheshire. l T H E M O B E R L E Y F A M I L Y November 1987 Debrett 4157 THE MOBERLEY FAMILY The object of this report is to describe our research into the Mob(b)erl(e)y family, in both American and British sources. At the outset we received a good deal of helpful information, mostly in the form of data from two professional genealogists, namely Harry Newnan Wright and Fred Eggleston. The information we received showed that Clement Moberley senior was born in about 1721 in Maryland, the son of Edward Moberley and his wife Susannah De Ruel. Edward and Susannah apparently left Maryland and moved down to Virginia, where they were traced in the records of Lunenburg County in the middle of the eighteenth century. Thereafter the family moved down to Fairfield County, South Carolina, and it was here that Edward died on 11 April 1765. His wife Susannah died on 14 June 1761 also in South Carolina. b From the information supplied to us at the outset, there appeared to be two candidates to be Edward's father: firstly, according to family tradition, he was the son of William Mobley / Mobberley, who was born ca. 1660 in England, emigrated aged 18 to Pennsylvania with William Penn and married Penn's governess, Phoebe Lovejoy. However, it had not been possible to verify the existence of this William Mob(er)ley from contemporary records. A more plausible candidate was identified by Fred Eggleston. Edward Mobberly was born on 13 May 1696 in All Hallows parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the third son of John and Ann Mobberly. Edward's elder brothers were James Mobberly, born on 3 January 1691/2 and John, born on 2 March 1688/9. There were two younger brothers, William, born on 18 March 1693/4 and Thomas, born on 18 January 1698/9; all the brothers were born in All Hallows parish. Their mother was called Ann, but she probably died young, for by June 1708 John Mobberly was married to Elizabeth Robertson. On 28 February 1716, John Mobberly remarried again, in Queen Anne's parish, to Suzanna, widow of Aaron Scaggs. We know that John was born in about 1657/8 since he was aged 64 in 1722. He died shortly before 12 February 1728 in Prince George County, Maryland, and was intestate. During his lifetime, in June 1708, he granted by deed, livestock to his sons John, James, William, Edward and Thomas. By this date the family were living in Prince George County, Maryland. c It had been noted that on 30 December 1683 an elder John Moberly made his will in Maryland. Although he apparently only mentioned a daughter Margaret, it seemed probable that this represented an older generation. At the outset we should acknowledge that we have been able to draw upon the material supplied to the genealogist Mr F. Leeson by his former client Mrs Frank Harvey of Illinois. Mrs Harvey requested Mr Leeson to carry out a search on the name Mobberly from his Surname Archive. From this file we have drawn some of the material from Maryland sources and from Cheshire sources in England which are contained in the Appendix to this report. Apart from analysing this material, we have also carried out our own wider programme of research in early emigrant sources, and in a range of English sources apart from Cheshire. As with so many early American cases, the Mobberly family have proved to have been very challenging, and our research has raised as many questions as it has answered. In the first place, it must be stated that a careful survey of Maryland sources has thrown into question whether Edward Mobbberly, the husband of Susanna De Ruel, was in fact the child born 1696, the son of John and Ann Mobberly of Anne Arundel and later of Prince George County, Maryland. In November 1721, Edward Mobberly, a schoolmaster of Prince George County, Maryland, made his will. He mention his wife d Rebecca and three children Rebecca, Edward and Francis. will will was not in fact proved until fourty years later, in August 1761. This Edward is mentioned several times in Prince George County Maryland deeds and other records, from 1718 onwards. We know that he had married Rebecca daughter of Samuel Griffiths of Calvert County, Maryland, by December 1718. All the evidence we have points to Edward Mobberly the schoolmaster remaining static in Prince George County; there is no evidence that he moved to Virginia or South Carolina, or that he remarried to Susanna De Ruel and had a second family. On the face of it, therefore, we have two roughly contemporary Edward Mobberlys. Harry Newman Wright attempted to solve the problem by suggesting that Edward Mobberly the schoolmaster and Rebecca Griffiths were the parents of Edward Mobberly who married Susanna De Ruel. However, this is impossible if Edward and Susanna's son Clement was born in about 1721. We would expect Edward and Susanna to have been roughly the same age as Edward and Rebecca. We know only the precise date of birth of Clement's younger brother, Benjamin, born on 25 December 1735. Even if Benjamin was the eldest, his father could hardly have been a son of Edward Mobberly the schoolmaster. We must next ask who the child born on 13 May 1696 in Anne Arundel County, the son of John and Ann Mobberley, went on to marry ? e Was it Rebecca Griffiths or Susanna De Ruel ? Unfortunately there is no clear-cut answer to this question; no record of the marriage of either Edward Mobberly seems to have survived. Circumstantial evidence, however, strongly suggests that the child born in 1696 grew up to be the schoolmaster. John Mobberly appears to have moved into Prince George County in 1697 (just after its creation out of Charles and Calvert Counties). The schoolmaster seems to have lived all his life in Prince George County. There are, however, important clues which suggest that Edward Mobberly, the husband of Susanna De Ruel, had his roots in Maryland. Firstly, family tradition, as recorded in printed sources such as George A Hill's Hill & Hill-Moberly Connections of Fairfield County, South Carolina (1961) and William W Dixon's The Mobleys and their Connections (1907) asserts that Edward's father, known as William Moberly, settled at Point Tobacco, Maryland. Secondly, in 1742, Edward, Clement and William Mobberly are recorded as having signed a petition, urging the creation of a new parish (All Saints) in Prince George County, Maryland. Clement is a distinctive name, and we know the schoolmaster's sons were called Edward and Francis. Finally, it is worth noting that Edward and Susanna Mobberly named a daughter Dorcas. Thomas Mobberly (in his will dated 1769, which we have abstracted) also called a daughter Dorcas. Thomas was without any doubt the youngest son of John and Ann Moberly of Anne Arundel County. f In our searches of sources relating to early immigrants to America, we have traced a passenger list of the ship "Peter & Phillip", which sailed from London, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, in June 1712. One of the 18 passengers was "Edward Mobeley" (see Passengers to America by M. Tepper (1978), p.131). The name is spelt slightly differently from the Mob(b)erley family in Maryland and South Carolina, but the discrepancy is not Vital. It is certainly possible this is a record of the entry of Edward, the husband of Susanna De Ruel, but we cannot be sure. Certainly an entry through Boston does not tally with either family tradition or with the results of previous research into the problem of the origins of Edward Mobberley. However, this passenger list must be borne in mind as a possible reference to the ancestor until proved otherwise. Finally, we have looked closely at the earliest Mobberely record in Maryland; the will of John Mobberly of St Marys County, dated 30 December 1683. This mentions only his wife Elizabeth, and his "brother" (probably meaning brother in law), Richard Nenns. Richard Nenns' daughter, Margaret Nenns, is also mentioned. The testator mentioned no children, but it is possible they had been provided for during his lifetime, and it is even possible that Edward, the husband of Susanna De Ruel, was a son of his. The second phase of this report concerns the Mob(b)erl(e)y family in England. The material contained in Mr Leeson's file related to g Cheshire sources. The most famous Mobberley family is recorded in Ormerod's History of the County Palatine and City of Chester (1875 edition, volume I). This gives the pedigree of the original family Mobberley of Mobberley, Cheshire, from the twelth to the fifteenth centuries. The male line appears to have become extinct with Sir Raufe (Ralph) Mobberley who died in 1361, leaving only an illegitimate daughter. However, there were certainly other families of the name in the immediate area, who perhaps descended from remote younger sons, or illegitimate sons. The parish registers of Frodsham were searched from 1558 to 1750, and this showed an extensive Mobbereley family, which favoured the names Edward, William and John. There was no baptism for a John in about 1657/8, but it is interesting to note that William, son of Thomas Mobberley was baptised in 1661. He was not apparently married or buried in the parish, and hence he is a candidate to be the emigrant to America. From the 1660s onwards, this family seems to have gradually faded out or moved away from Frodsham. There was one will, proved in Diocese of Chester, for the Frodsham family; in 1585 Edward Mobberley, yeoman of the hamlet of Norley, made his will. This is obviously too early to be of direct relevance to our search, but it gives an interesting insight into a yeoman family at this time. A further Mobberley family was identified in Plumbley, a hamlet in the chapelry of Lower Peover, in the parish of Great Budworth, h Cheshire. Here the most interesting discovery was the will of George Mobberley the elder of Plumbley, made by word of mouth on 12 June 1628. He requested to be buried with his ancestors in Lower Peover Chapel, and mentioned his wife, Ellin, and his four children, William, John, George and Ellin. The son William was away from home, and was perhaps not expected to return. Here it is very tempting to speculate that William Mobberley of Plumbley had emigrated to America, and was perhaps the original immigrant ancestor of the Maryland Mobberleys. He Was probably of the correct age to have been the father of John Mobberley of St Marys Country, Maryland, whose will is dated 1683. However, we must be cautious since 1628 is a very early date for anyone to have been in America, particularly Maryland, where the first contingent of settlers arrived in 1634. There was, nonetheless, a good of movement from Virginia to Maryland in the 1630s. Printed sources relating to early Virginia and Maryland families do not mention any Mobberley in the 1620s or 1630s, although the names Moby and Mowbery occur a little later. The early registers of Lower Peover show the baptisms of four children of George Mobberley between 1594 and 1619, but George Mobberley junior was not among them, and hence we cannot be certain when he was born. We widened the search by consulting the Mormon International Genealogical Index (IGI), which is an index of baptisms and marriages extracted from parish register, and arranged i alphabetically, county by county. Not every parish' register in Cheshire is included, but those of Lower Peover after 1628 are. This gave us a good indication of where else in Cheshire the name Mobberley occurred, and it will be seen that Prestbury, a large parish to the east of Mobberley and Lower Peover, contained a large concentration. However, it was disappointing to find no John, William or Edward Mobberley of potential significance. We supplemented the search by noting Mobberley burials at Prestbury from 1560 to 1638, and in this way it is possible begin to build up a' detailed picture of each family. Finally, in Cheshire we looked at the herald's Visitation of Cheshire, 1613, but found no mention of members of the Mobberley family after the fifteenth century. Widening the search beyond Cheshire, the IGI for Lancashire, the county adjoining Cheshire, showed a few Mobberley entries, particularly from Liverpool and Warrington, and it is likely these families moved up over the border from Cheshire. We searched for Mobberley wills and administrations proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury between 1620 and 1700. This was the superior probate jurisdiction in England and Wales, used by those with property in more than one diocese, and by those who died, or had property abroad. There were only two wills of particular interest; those of John Moberley, a yeoman of Plumbley, Great Budworth, Cheshire, proved in 1654. and that of his wife, Anne, described as a widow when she made her will, although her will was in fact proved j before that of her husband, in 1653. This couple apparently left no children, and it was disappointing that they did not mention any cousins or relations in America. The testator, John Mobberley, was probably the son of George Mobberley of Plumbley, whose will of 1628 we have already described. The main beneficiaries from Anne Mobberly's will were members of the Wood family. It is therefore interesting to note that Thomas Wood witnessed George's will in 1628 and that John Mobberley married Anne Wood in 1625 at Great Budworth. However, is unfortunate that neither John or Anne Mobberley mentioned John's brother, William, whom we have identified as a possible candidate to have been the original immigrant to America. We examined two further wills from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, those of Lawrence Mably of Halsted, Essex (1645) and of Rebecca Mabberly of St Bartholomew the Great, London. This last will looked promising in view of our discovery that an Edward Mobeley had arrived in Boston from London in 1712. However, Rebecca's will, dated 13 July 1681, mentioned no son called Edward. We pursued London sources further, by noting Mobberley and Mabberley entries from IGI before 1680 from London and Middlesex. There were very few Mobberley entries; none of any obvious significance. There were more Mabberley entries, but again none seemed to be of great potential significance. Local London probate courts were searched for Mobberley wills, but with negative results. k We have searched other general sources, hoping to trace a reference to a Mobberley emigrating in the seventeenth century. The Great Card Index at the Society of Genealogists contains a huge number of references from miscellaneous sources. We noted all Mobberley entries before 1700, but nothing of importance emerged. Bernau's Index to Chancery Proceedings (legal cases usually concerning land or family settlements) did contain two references to a John Moberley, in 1680 and 1685, and it would certainly be worth following these up in the original papers. In conclusion, a wide range of sources in both America and England have now been searched for the origins of Edward Mobberley and his family. We have made considerable progress towards building up a complete picture of each family of this name on both sides of the Atlantic. In this way, a clear answer should emerge, since the name is a relatively rare one and seems to have been concentrated in relatively few parishes in Cheshire. However, perseverance is needed since more groundwork should be done to clarify the parentage of Edward Mobberley, who married in Susanna De Ruel, in America. In particular, we would recommend work in Virginian sources, and that the Edward Mobeley who arrived in Boston from London in 1712 be investigated more thoroughly. Once the sequence of generations in America has been clarified, the origins in England may become evident without too much difficulty. Nevertheless, we should continue to seek a reference in English sources to a brother / son / kinsman in America.
