The Flying Flocks

Okay...these boys are direct decendants of Leonard "Peachtree" Williams... Mama was a Flock by her Dad and a Williams by her Mom...Peachtree was at one time the biggest bootlegger in Atlanta, GA. The Flocks were in Fort Payne, AL and Lee Flock died in the late 1920's leaving Maude with a herd of children ( there were 9 of them all told). Carl was the oldest boy and he went to live with Peachtree, and when Peachtree was gunned down, well Carl Flock took over. As you may or may not know, back then the moonshiners all got together in empty fields and pitted their cars against one another....and this is how Bob and Fonty got started. I am afraid I don't have a lot of pictures, but I do have some real strange stories. The boys used to go to Sears on Friday and buy a set of tires...race them all weekend, and return them Monday morning...because they were so badly worn. Uncle Fonty used to race in shorts. Uncle Tim lost a race because he had to pit to drop off his monkey..Jocko Flocko. And this is a reprint of an old (1952) ad staring my uncle Fonty.

My mother raced from about 1936 to 1952 when my sister came along, and daddy put his foot down, he didn't mind raising one girl, but two was a bit much. Bob, Fonty and Tim all started in the early 30's and Tim raced till 1961. Tim was the baby of the family, he was also the one who won a couple of NASCAR championships. "Tim Flock was one of NASCAR 's early pioneers. He finished 5th in NASCARs inaugural Winston Cup race at Charlotte, North Carolina in 1949 . NASCAR's first official season ended with Tim in eighth, Tim's brother Fonty Flock in fifth, and Tim's brother Bob Flock in third in the overall points standing. Tim sat out the 1950 NASCAR season recovering from a four car pile up at Charlotte. Returning to racing in 1951, Tim won seven races. 1952 brought eight wins and four poles. At the end of the 1952 NASCAR season, Tim Flock had 106 more points than Herb Thomas , earning Flock his first Grand National Championship title. 1955 was a record setting year for Flock as well as NASCAR. On the way to Flock's second Grand National Championship title, Flock had 19 poles and 18 victories in 45 races. The 18 victories stood as a record until broken by The King, Richard Petty , in 1967." This is one of the short aritcle on the web about him. If you google Ethel Flock Mobley you may well come up with a picture. And there are a couple with me in them. We were in the papers a bit back then...racing mama and all that.
