ANCESTOR SPOTLIGHT
VICTORIA ELLIS MOBLEY

Winter, 1979 THE ELLIS COUSINS NEWSLETTER PAGE 5

Victoria B. Ellis was the first child of Mary Clark and James Pleasant Ellis. She was born June 7, 1852 near Ripley in Lauderdale County, Tennessee.

Just a few years after the end of the Civil War (Nov. 26, 1869) , she married R. Alonzo (Lon) Mobley in Lauderdale County. The newly married couple spent about a year in Tennessee, where their oldest child, William Dean Mobley, was born.

In about 1870, Victoria and Lon joined his parents, the William J. Mobleys, and his brother, L.L. Mobley in a migration to Texas, stopping in Yell County, Arkansas for about three years, where their oldest daughters, Mary and Cornelia, were born.

By 1873, the Mobleys were settled in Montague County, Texas , where the rest of their children were born.

It was actually a return trip to Texas for the Mobleys. The William J. Mobleys had come to Texas in about 1850, homesteading in Tarrant County. They lived there and in Parker County, Texas until after the Civil War broke out, at which time they returned to Tennessee to check on family members.

Children born to Victoria and Lon in Montague County were James E., 1876, Walter A., 1979, Effie, 1882, Nora, 1884, Ruth, 1886, Alba, 1889, Marion E., 1892, and Ruby, 1895.

Victoria was a small person, about 5-4 tall. She, was a likable, hard-working woman, typical pioneer stock. Lon was a handsome, slender man, who was bothered by a pulmonary (lung) problem, which hampered him considerably in his farming activities.

Lon apparently passed down his asthmatic tendencies to some of his sons, and it is said that "Vick" and her daughters did much of the work on their firm near Forestburg in Montague County.

This was especially true after Lon died of his lung ailment in 1905, leaving Victoria with four of their 11 children at home.

But "Aunt Vick" Continued the rearing of her children, and for a number of years managed the farm and tended the livestock.

In fact, within two years of her husband's death, tragedy again struck this valiant woman. Her oldest son, William Dean, lost his wife Mollie (Welch) in 1906, and Victoria began to help with his children.

Then, late in 1907, William Dean died of blood poisoning, and Victoria had these grandchildren as added responsibilities.

She is credited with at least helping to raise Oma, Jordan Lonnie, Eva, Walter, Sam and Ruth, who was less than three years old when her father, Wm. D. Mobley died.

In later years, after she had "retired," Victoria spent some time with various of her children. One recalled that she would. bring her featherbed with her when she visited and that she was a pleasant person, and liked to tell about her early life in Tennessee.

Victoria B. Mobley died on 3 March 1941 near Muleshoe in Bailey County, Texas, while living with her daughter Ruth (who married her first cousin, Wade Ellis). She is buried at the Muleshoe Cemetery.

(We wish we had more on this lively lady. It sounds like she was a fascinating Person-B.E.)
