Third Generation
33.
Beatrice Corrine HANSON was born on May 11, 1921.
Beatrice Hanson is truly a "prairie" girl, born on the family farm
near Lajord, Saskatchewan. Schooling was in the town of Lajord and later Regina,
where she gained her secretarial knowledge. Family and her heritage are her
passions. Beatrice now lives in a care facility in Langley, BC and struggles
with Parkinson's. Beatrice Corrine HANSON and Arthur Sydney JAMES were married
on Aug 17, 1942 in Lajord, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Arthur Sydney
JAMES was born on Jul 29, 1915 in Revelstoke, B C. He died on
Mar 10, 1998 in Surrey, BC. He was buried in Valleyview Cemetery,
Surrey, BC. Art loved finding willing listeners for his stories.
They were of the first home he could remember in Yale, BC, of his siblings,
the historic town, the one room school house, his mother's loving care, and his
father's interesting life as a CPR lineman.
High School years were spent in Vancouver. When the family settled in North
Bend, Art moved on to work in the Okanagan, and finally underground in the Primer
Mine in Northern BC. Tragedy struck the family in 1940 when his mother and sister
Loretta drowned in the Fraser River at North Bend.
Art joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was posted to "14X" an
explosives Depot in Regina. Later he transferred to the Construction and Maintenance
Unit in Calgary where he gained invaluable experience for his chosen trade of
carpentry.
Art joined the Cabinet Maker's Union, transferring to the United Brotherhood
of Carpenters in 1950 as a charter member. He worked in residential construction
in British Properties, and industrial construction. His expertise was evident
in the building of Wilson Heights United Church as Carpenter-Foreman in charge
of day crews, as well as weekend and evening volunteers. Art eventually enjoyed
the independence of self employment. In his retirement he was still willing
to lend a helping hand.
