5. Photo Julia (Joran) MOGEN was born on Feb 8, 1886 in Numedal, Norway. She died of Typhoid Fever on Mar 8, 1928 in Cole, SD. The following research was done by Jean Mogen Wold.

"Julia was born in Norway on the Mogen farm near Lyngdal, Neumadal, Norway, the fourth child of C.K. and Berit (GRONBO) GROTERUD on 2/08/1886 and came to America with her mother, three siblings and her Aunt INGEBORG in August of 1886. C.K. had gone to America in 1885. Julia's death record in Perkins Co. at Bison, SD states that she died 3/07/1928. My records show that she died 3/08/1928. The death record also shows that she was from Cole, SD and died at the age of 42 from Typhoid Fever. She married Peter UGLEM in 1915. Peter was born 8/02/1888 and died 11/20/1939. They are both buried at Lebanon Cemetery in Grant Co.,SD near Summit, SD. I am still checking these dates also.

Julia proved up her homestead, the NW quarter of Sec. 30, T 20N, R 13E on 12/14/1918. Peter proved up the SW Quarter of Sec. 19 same township and range 7/13/1915. These homesteads are about 12 miles SE of Lodgepole and about (5 miles NW of Bison. These were adjoining quarters and records show that Peter sold his quarter of land to Nels Underland on 7/09/1928. On Julia's Final Decree it states that her quarter of land went to her husband Peter. He sold that quarter of land to Nels Underland on 2/02/1929. So both quarters were sold to the same individual. Current owners of the property are Donald and Rose Archibold. Shirley Mogen Stephens and her husband Fred are friends of Gerry and Jan Sailer and they currently own adjoining property. Gerry is a retired Dr. from Hettinger, ND who has become a rancher. He states in an e-mail to Shirley that this land is REMOTE--right in the middle of everywhere.

I think that Julia taught at the Cole School at one time. I don't know if Cole was a post office, school, church, town or all of these. It was about 5-6 miles northeast of their homestead. In 1925 Peter and Julia lived at the Lundeen Ranch while that family was in Norway for the summer and I think they stayed there the following winter so the Lundeen children could go to school in Hettinger. This is where Peter and Julia herded sheep and were outdoors every day riding horse and checking sheep. She also drove a horse and buggy and was deeply tanned. From a picture I have of their homestead buildings [ think they had mostly cattle on their ranch as there are no sheep in the picture.

Thomas Holme a great nephew of Peters sent an UGLEM Family history site and he has inserted the pictures I have of Julia and the homestead into their history."
