| Lucinda Cook , was the daughter of Stephen Cook and Patience Marshall Cook of Jefferson County, Tennessee, Hendricks-Morgan Counties, Indiana, Otoe County, Nebraska, and Johnson County, Kansas. An extra unidentified daughter had shown up with Stephen in the 1840 census but no way to prove her name. Now Eleazar Bales married Lucinda Cook 14 October 1841 in Washington County, Iowa (adjacent to Keokuk County). In 1850 Stephen and family are found in District 26 in Keokuk County, Iowa #157 Stephen Cook, 51, farmer, born NC; Patience, 47, NC; Joshua, 20, farmer, IN; William, 16, IN; John, 14, IN; Stephen B, 12, IN; Lydia E, 12, IN; Jesse, 6, Iowa. And only a few doors from Nathan with wife Scintha [Cynthia], 29, born NC (Stephen's daughter) and Charles Woodward with wife Lovina, 22, born In (also Stephen's daughter and Charles' second wife). Also in District 26, Keokuk County, Iowa in 1850: #44 Eleazor Bales, 26, farmer, IN; Lucinda, 24, IN; Sarah J, 8, IN; Wm A, 5, IA; Lydia, 1, IA (no doubt named for Lucinda's sister Lydia). But the real proof comes from the 1860 census in Otoe County, Nebraska Territory where Stephen Cook, Charles Woodward, Nathan Woodward, and Eleazar Bales are scattered rather evenly in the Nebraska City Post Office Area: #694 Stephen Cook, 62, farmer, North Carolina; Patience, 59, N Car; Stephen B., 22, Ind; Lydia E, 22, In; Jesse, 16, Ia; Wm M., 26, In; #684 Nathan and Cynthia and #700 Charles and Lavina; then #727 Eleazar Bales, 36, farmer, 400, IN; Lucinda, 34, IN; Sarah J, 17, IN; Wm A, 15, IA; Lydia M, 10, IA; Addison C, 8, IA; Stephen O, 4, IA. Lucinda's naming a son Stephen is the clincher. Note they went back to Indiana after the marriage - most certainly Eleazar's relative is the Eleazar Bales/Beals, 74, born NC found in Hendricks County in 1870 so it would make sense that they visited. They did not follow the family to Kansas and are found in 1880 in Liberty Precinct, Cass County, Nebraska (next to Otoe) #125 Eleazar Bales, 57, farmer, rheumatism, born IN, parents NC; Lucinda, 54, In, NC, NC; Adison C, 26, son IA; Hattie, 18, NE; Mollie M., 18, NE; Eddie, 10, Iowa (note a visit back to Iowa). Next to them is son Stephen Bales, 23, farmer, IA, parents Indiana, Miranda, 21, NE, parents VA; Perry, 2/12 (Apr), son, NE, IA, NE. Note that Lucinda has the correct birthplace for Stephen and Patience and her birthplace matches with their moving to Indiana in 1825 as proven in Quaker records.
