RE: THOMAS ROSE

Thank you for your request for research on the above. I enclose print-outs from our microfilm copies of The Shrewsbury Chronicle for 22"d. and 291h. March 1793 concerning the trial of Thomas Rose. I am afraid that at that date the newspaper only recorded the bare details unless the case was very sensational.

Although the trial took place at the Assizes whose records are held at the Public Record Office at Kew (from where I presume you obtained the extract) we do have amongst our Quarter Sessions records, calendars of prisoners held in the County Gaol, including those awaiting trial or transportation as well as those imprisoned. I enclose, on a separate sheet details from these calendars. Later, details of the place of birth of the prisoners were sometimes given but unfortunately not for this period. I have searched the baptism registers of Newport and the adjoining parish of Edgmond for the period 1770-76 but have not been able to find the baptism of Thomas Rose. I have also looked at the I.G.I. for Shropshire which has very good coverage of baptisms for the period but without success. The baptisms you have found at Great Yarmouth seem promising. The letter was very interesting but suggests a very wealthy family. 250 pounds was a very large sum at that date and 5000 pounds a fortune.

Charged on suspicion in company with William Trevor with having feloniously and burglariously broken open the shop of Mr. Ellis Morris at Newport in the County of Salop and stolen thereout various articles of the value of œ 10 and upwards the property of him the said Ellis Morris. Committed 24th. December 1792 by William Smith Esq.

Lent Assizes 19th. March 1793

Thomas Rose aged 19 Charged upon the oath of Ellis Morris of Newport on suspicion of feloniously and burglariously breaking open (in company with William Trevor) his shop at Newport aforesaid and burglariously stealing therein various articles of the value of œ 10 and upwards. Committed 241h. December by William Smith Esq. Condemned and reprieved

15th.JUly 1793

Sentenced to be transported, Condemned and reprieved, Thomas Rose aged 19, William Trevor aged 49

7th. October 1793

Sentenced to be transported. Thomas Rose aged 19, Lent Assizes 19th. March 1793. To the eastern coast of New South Wales during the term of their natural lives. Last appearance of Thomas Rose in Calendar of Prisoners.

Shrewsbury Chronicle, 22nd March 1792

Schewsbury: Friday, March 22.

Fifth paragraph…………………At our fair on Saturday last, cheese sold from 35s. to 42s. per hundred: horses and cattle sold very well.

At our Assizes, William Trevor and Thomas Rose, for burglariously breaking open and robbing the shop of Mr Morris, mercer of Newport; Edward Swift and John Mabrey ……..were found guilty of felony. The assizes are expected to end this day.

Shrewsbury Chronicle, 22nd March 1792

Schewsbury: Friday, March 22.

Fifth paragraph: ………………………Our Assizes ended on Friday last; when the six capital convicts (mentioned in our last) received sentence of death, but were all reprieved.

Guilty; To be hanged.

"Shropshire, The Jurors for our Lord the King upon their Oath present that Thomas Rose late of the Parish of Newport in the County of Salop Laborer and William Trevor late of the same Laborer on the Twenty second day of

December in the :thirty third year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lords George the third King of Great Britain &c about the hour of one in the Night of the same day with force and Arms at the parish aforesaid in the County

aforesaid the Dwelling House of One Ellise Morris-there Situate feloniously and burglariously did break and Enter and forty Silk Handkerchiefs of the value of four Pounds forty seven cotton Handkerchiefs of the value of four pounds seventy nine yards of Cotton of the value of six Pounds eighty Laces of the value of four shillings and three yards of other Cotton of the value of two shillings of the Goods and Chattels of the said Ellis Morris in the said Dwelling House then and there being found then and there feloniously and burglasriously did steal take and carry away against the peace of our said Lord the King his Crown and Dignity",
