REMOVED TO MOUNT MORIAH CEMETERY

REMOVED TO MOUNT MORIAH CEMETERY

From St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery

I was very upset when I saw the condition of Mount Moriah Cemetery, and that was before I knew that Abigail Israel, the beloved sister of my 5th great grandfather Israel Israel, had been removed from St Paul's Cemetery in Philadelphia to Mount Moriah. I decided to honor her by doing this transcription of her tombstone and that of all her fellow removees from the St Paul's Church ground where their loved ones, I am sure, expected them to remain in perpetuity. I am hoping this list will help someone else who, like me, is searching for someone lost, but not forgotten. In addition, if one or more of these folks belong in your family tree or you would just like to help to clean up the deplorable situation at Mt Moriah there is a group working very hard to do just that. They would value anything you might be able to do to assist them. This is the most dedicated, nicest group of people you will ever meet. In just a year they have made amazing progress, clearing brush, trees and trash. There is, however, much work still to be done. They need many hands from hard workers to continue. All talents you have no matter how obscure are needed and would be much appreciated.

Her mother was Mary Paxton Lamplugh, Paxton being HER maiden name, Married to Nathaniel Lamplugh. This is clearly recorded in the marriage record of Trapp Lutheran Church, Trapp PA. Michael Israel and Mary Lamplugh were married, 22 Feb 1845/46 by Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg.) Israel, was Justice of the Peace for the 5th District of Philadelphia county, composed of Moyamensing, Passyunk and Southwark. (Phila. City Directory, 1819.) By his will, dated in 1817, he left an annuity to my sister Abby Israel. (Phila. Will Book 7 p. 460) A sketch of Israel Israel is given by Henry S. Morais, in The Jews of Philadelphia; p. 33. Though Michael Israel was a professed Jew, his children were baptized in the christian faith, including both Israel Israel and his sister Abigail. Poulson's American Daily Advertiser, for Sept, 1. 1828, says that Abigail Israel died on Friday evening last, aged 82 years. Her tombstone is the only one encountered by the writer, on which double-dating is employed. Since the inscription was copied, the upper part of the slab has been broken off by vandals.
