Early RANSOM Immigrants

EARLY RANSOM IMMIGRANTS

updated 27 November 1999

1635 Virginia: Robert RANSON immigrated, by patentee or party Richard BENNETT; county not known. Found in the book, Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666 by George Cabell GREER, [1912].

1652 Virginia: Peter RANSOM (or RANSONE) born 1615 in England, owned land in Gloucester Co VA [Mobjack Bay, 1652], and was a member of House of Burgesses at Williamsburg VA in 1652. Died before 10 Feb 1663; at least two sons, James b 1640, and George. See reprints from 1902 & 1905 William & Mary Quarterly in Genealogies of Virginia Families [Baltimore: GPC, 1982], vol IV pp 255-258; also Genealogy of the RANSONE Family in Richmond Times-Dispatch 25 Feb & 4 Mar 1906. Extensive files in JER Collection at Buffalo NY.

1654 Plymouth, Massachusetts: Robert RANSOM, probably age 18, filed a complaint against his master, Thomas DEXTER. He took the "Oath of Fidelitie" in 1657 (age 21?) and married Abigail --- not Susannah! about 1659.

1677-1701 Virginia: Robert RANSOM or RANSON, apparently a ship captain, on the Planters Adventure in July-Aug 1677, July 1679, July-Aug 1680, & Oct 1681, bound from London to Virginia. Also on the ship Lyon Nov-Dec 1695, and the ship Golden Lyon May 1701. These references are from the Public Records office in London, as reported in The Complete Book of Emigrants 1607-1776, by Peter Wilson COLDHAM.

1681? Connecticut: Matthew RANSOM probably born 1659-1660 or earlier. He was a "dresser of leather" ca 11 April 1681, according to a land deed, thus implying he was at least age 21. His only known child is Joseph RANSOM born 1682. This Matthew is not shown to be connected to Robert RANSOM of Plymouth, despite the misinformation in many books.
