In the Name of God Amen I John Bates of Linsted in the County of Kent Shoemaker being sick in Body, but of sound, perfect and disposing mind and will, I thank my God therefore, do this Fourteenth Day of February Anno D'ni 1702 and in the First Year of the Reign of our Soveraign Lady Queen Anne over England &c make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner following

Impris I give and bequeath unto my Son John Bates the full Summe of Ten pounds to be paid unto him Twelve Months after my Decease by my Executor hereafter named.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son James Bates the full Summe of Twenty pounds to be paid unto him Six Months after my Decease by my Executor hereafter named. I also give unto my said Son James Bates the Bed I now lye on as it now stands with the Furniture thereto belonging as also the Chest of Drawes in the Best Chamber with two pair of Sheets one New and one Old.

Impris I give and bequeath unto my Son Josias Bates the full Summe of Twenty pounds to be paid unto him Six Months after my Decease by my Executor hereafter named. I also give unto my son Josias Bates the Bed in the Middle Chamber as it now stands, as also One of the Chests in the best Chamber, with two pair of Sheets one new and one old.
Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Byfleet Twenty Shillings to be paid unto her Six Months after my decease.

Item my Will and mind farther is, and I do hereby give & bequeath all the rest & residue of my goods Chattels and personal estate (after my Debts Legacies, Funerall Expences, probate of this my Will, and all other Charges incident thereunto are fully paid and satisfied) unto my Son Richard Bates whom I do hereby make and ordain full and whole Executor of this my Will.
And I hereby revoke all former Wills and Testaments by me here tofore made, And do declare this to be my last will and Testament;

Signed Sealed Published and Declared by the Testaor John Bates, to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us whose names are hereunto subscribed; In the presence of the said Testator (the word Twelve being first interlined)

Notes:
John Bates, shoemaker aged 64 was buried 25 Nov 1705 at Lynsted.
Frances the wife of John Bates was also buried there 20 Mar 1693/4.
Josias son of John & Frances Bates was baptised at Lynsted in 1683.
Mary Bates married Francis Byfleet, sailmaker of Chatham, at Eastling 26 Jun 1700.
