In the name of God Amen the xxijth day of October the xx yere of the reigne of kyng henry the vijth [1504]
I Thomasyne Coke of the p�yshe of the holy crosse of Westgate of Cantbury [Canterbury] by the assent will & agremet [agreement] of Robert Coke my husband make my testament conteynyg my last will in manr [manner] & forme followyng / that is to say /
First I comende my Soule to allmyghty god my Creator to oure blyssed lady virgyn and all his saintes and my body to be buried in the Churche yarede of the holy crosses of Westgate of Cantbury (sic) forsaide beside the sepulture [sepulchre] of William Shorte late my husband

Item I bequeith to Agnes Bovier a gowne of tawny & a rede kertill withoute slevus [sleeves]
Item to Dronyse Ansell a blak gowne of tawny which is at Brownynde
Also to every of my sisters children a plater of pewter and a candlistik of latten [latten is polished lead]

Item to Juliane Frethe A kertill of muzzey and a gowne of tawny
Item I bequeith to Marion A Kertill of violet
And to every of my godchildren viijd a plater of pewter and candilstike of latten

Item to my fythers son beyng a Chanon [Canon] at Sainte Gregoryes * withoute the wallys of Cantbury a little chasee [chest] for to sett by the fyre a little maze harnessed with sylver iJ spones of sylver & a chafyng dysshe of latton
* This is the Priory of St. Gregory � the church was found in the 19th century and thus did not exist at this time.

Item I woll that I have at evry day of my buryeng and monethes mynde a dirige & xxx masses in the said pyshe churche of the holy crosse of Cantbury

Item I bequeith to Agnes my s....te [servant?] a marezas a bolster a payre of sheets a payre of blanketts & a dou�let [doublet] & when she is maryed a new gowne & a new kirtill a bras pott & a bras panne a plate a disshe a faward? of pewter & a candilstyk of latten

Also I bequeith to William Haznett ij platters & a disshe of pewter
Also I bequeith to the said Agnes Bovyer a blewe gyrdill harnessed with sylver & barred after the olde Fassyion [fashion]

Further more I will that all my lands & tents. [tenements] which that I have in the pysshe of saynte maries beside Cantbury [St. Mary Northgate?] & the holy crosse of Westgate of Canterbury, except my messuage wth theapp�tnce [the appurtenances] sett in the said pysshe of Sainte Martens next Hasshi hal ? hooly sheall remayne to the forseid Robt. Coke my husband [for the] terme of his lyffe duryng

& after his discease I will that my hous wt theapprtentce sett in the same pysshe of sainte marten next agnes Foffees [feoffees] shall remayne for evr in the hands of the wardens of the pyshe churche of sainte Martens forseid for the tyme beyng so that they with the Issues and p�fetts [profits] comyng of the same do or cause to be done every yere yerly forever for my soule and al cristen soules and obits / that is to saye / a dirige by note & v masses in the forseid churche of sainte marten the sonday [Sunday] before Sainte Martens day and then to be at dirige iij prests the curat and the Clerke there & the same iij prests to have every of them iiijd & the curat ijd & the clerke vjd & to the wardens of the same Churche for their labors to evry of them iiijd yerly comyng of thiuuses & pfitts [the issues and profits] of the same hous

and the Resydues of mony comyng of the issues of the same hous to be employed by the same Wardens yerly aboute the reparacons of the same hous and about the repation [reparation] of the said Churche of Sainte Martens provyded alway(s) if the samewardens of sainte martens for the tyme beyng be necligent and kepe nott the saide obit yerly ater the forme as is above demfied if the yssues and p�ffites of the same house will yerly extende thereto then I will that the wardens of the pysshe churche of the hooly crosse of Cantbery for the tme beyng shall have the yerly pfitts of the same hous doyng the said obite in althyngs as is afores Specified in the said pyshe churche of the hooly crosse if the same yssues & profitts will extende thereto
and if the same yssues & pfitts will not extende to the p�formance of the said yerly obite then I will that the said wardens & every of them shalbe charged with no further charges than the same yssues will extende

And I will that my said Messuage next Nasshis afore expressed hooly shall Remayne to the said Robert Coke my husband his heires and assignes for ever

Also I will that my messuage with thapptences sett in the said pyshe of the hooly crosse of Westgate of Cantbury after the discease of the said Robert my husband shall be solde by my executors to the best p�ce [price] that it can or may and I will that my feoffees shall delyr [deliver] a lawfull state to such p�sone of p�sonys [person or persons] as shall frtewne to bye hit when they shalbe Requyred by y executors and of the money thereof comyng I bequeith towards the Reparacion of the same Church of the holy crosses where most nede is xxs and towards kepyng of a Kowe which cape for the same church of the holy crosses fyve pownds of lawfull money of england so that my name may be sett theryn and towards maynteyng of the masse holdyrs in the same churche of Saint Mary Magdaleyn in canterbury xxs

And to William Hylls vjs viijd
and the Residewe of the money comyng of that sale I will that hit shalbe bestowed in diriges and masses in the said Churche of the holy crosse and in other Charitable workes of evry [kind] after the distression [discression] of my executors as longe tyme As the Reydewes of the same money thereto will extende

Also I will that my messuage with theapptennys [the appurtenances] sett in the said pyshe of our ladye of Northgate of Canterbury [St. Mary Northgate] hooly shall remayne to the said agnes Bovier duryng [the] terme of her liffe and after her decesse I will that the same messuage with thappurtenacnes hooly shall remayne to the said Robert my husband duryng [the] term of his liffe And after the discease of the said Agnes Bovyar and Robert my husband I will that the same messuage with thappten�cs by my executors shalbe solde to the best p�ce that it can or may & of the mony thereof comyng I beueith towards the Repation and Amendyng of the hyge wat at Saint m�tens Hill xxl [�20]

And the Resydewes of the mony comyng of that sale I will that I have an honest frenle [friendly?] preste for to synge pray and be at all dynyne [dying?] by mee in the said Church of Sainte Martens for my Soule the Soule of my husband and Faders and moders bnfactors [benefactors] and all cristen (souls) as longe tyme as the Resydewes of the same mony comyng of that sale thereto will extende

And of this my p�sent testament conteynyng my last will I ordeyne and make the said Robert my husband Sir William Garnell John Agare and Willia. Hills my executors and I bequeith evry of theym for ther labour xvijd

Notes: Thomasyne Coke was the widow of William Shorte when she married Robert Coke.
William Short(e) died, leaving a Will dated 1492 and Proved 1493, and was of Holy Cross, Westgate, Canterbury. Ref.: PRC/17/5/372a.
