In the Name of God Amen on the sixeteenth day of february in the yere of our Lord God 1574(5) and in the seventh yere of the raigne of our Soveraigne lady Quene Elizabeth
I John Coppin of the parish of Deale in the Countye of Kent Yeoman being of good and perfect memorye praysed be to God do make my last will and testament in maner & forme following
First I acknowledge my manifold sinnes and offences comitted against the majesty of allmighty God hoping surely to be delivered from the due punishment of them and to be made an inheritor of the kyngdome of heaven only by the true mercy of God the father my creator, accompting the death and bloud sheding his sonne Jesus Christ my only saviour and redemer a full satisfaction for the same, my bodye I comitt to ye earth ther to remayne until the generall resurrection of the just to life eternall

Item I geve towards the repracons [reparations] of the churche of Deale fortie shillings the same to be bestowed at the discretion of my overseers wthin one yere after my decease; The wch [which] being done I will my overseers shall Imediatly yelde up an accompt unto the whole parishe of the bestowing and disposing thereof
Item I give to the poore of the parishe of Deale twentie shilings to be bestowed them wthin one yere after my decease at the discretion of my overseers
Item I will unto every other severall parishe wherany parcell of my land ar(e) now lying fyve shillings to be bestowed amongest the poore people ther at the discretion of my overseers

Item I will that on the day of my buriall ther shalbe a lerned man provided to make a sermon I meane my welbeloved freend Thomas Elgar, Parson of Deale if he be then lyving to whome I give for his paynes in that behalf ten shillings

Item I give unto Bridget Horne my daughter ten poundes and to my daughter Justine Man other ten poundes to be payd unto them wtin one halfe yere after my decease
Item I give and bequeath unto Katherine Coppin my daughter fortie poundes to be payd unto her at her age of one and twentie yeres or at the day of her mariage if she channce to marry before the sayd age
Item I give and bequeath unto Mary Coppin my daughter fortie poundes to be payd unto her at her age of one and twentie yeres or at the day of her mariage if she channce to marry before the sayd age
Item I will & bequethe unto Margaret Coppin my daughter fortie poundes to be payd unto her at her age of one and twentie yeres or at the day of her mariage if she channce to marry before the sayd age
Item I will & bequethe unto Martha Coppin my daughter fortie poundes to be payd unto her at her age of one and twentie yeres or at the day of her mariage if she channce to marry before the sayd age
And my will is that if any of my said fower daughters dye before their sayd tyme appointed for the receyt of their portions or legacyes, then the other that shalbe overlyving shall enjoye all suche legacyes as were bequethed unto their sister or sisters deceased
And if they all dye before the sayd tyme apointed for the receipt of their portions and legacyes Then I will that all suche legacyes as were bequethed unto them shall equally remayne to Bridget Horne and Justine Man my daughters if they be then lyving If they be then dead then the same to remayne to their children

Item I give and bequeath unto every of my sayd fower youngest daughters two Sylver spones to be delivered at suche tyme as they are to receyve their legacyes by this my will before bequethed
Item I will and bequethe to Willyam Coppin my sonne my Sylver salt, two sylver spones, the best mazer * bound wth sylver my best fetherbed wth the bedsted standing in the great parlor with all the furnyture to the same bed belonging to be delivered unto hym at his age of one and twentie yeres

Item I will and bequeath to Thomas Coppin my sonne my Silver drinking boule two Sylver spones, the second mazer bound wth sylver and one featherbed furnished to be delivered unto hym at his age of one and twentie yeres
Item I will unto John Coppin my sonne two sylver spones, the third mazer bound wth sylver and one fetherbed furnished to be delivered unto hym at his age of one & twentie yeres

Item I will & bequeathe that Mary Coppin my wife towards the performance of this my testament shall enjoye my lease wch I have of Deal pbend [prebendary?] untill such tyme as William Coppin my sonne shall or may accomplishe the age of one and twentie yeres, she keping the reparacons and paying the farme threof reserved And then I will that William Coppin my sonne shall enjoye the residue of the yeres then unexpired

Item I will if any of my sayd sonnes fortune to dye before their sayd ages of one and twentie yeres, Then the residue of my sonnes overlyving shall enjoye all suche legacyes as were before bequeathed unto them or any of them by this my testament

Item I will and bequeathe to John Coppin the sonne of George Coppin twenty shillings in mony to be delivered unto hym at his age of one and twentie yeres
Item I will unto my sister Molland of the towne and port of Dover twentie shillings to be delivered unto her wtin one moneth after my decease
Item I will unto Julian Usborne my daughter in lawe twentie shillings to be payd unto her wtin one yere after my decease

Item I will and give unto every one of my servants both men and weomen thre shillings & fowre pence a peice to be payd unto them wthin tow [2] monethes next after my decease to the intents that they shall contynue good servants unto my wife after my decease & during ther covenant

The Residue of all my goodes and Cattells my debtes and legacyes once payd and contented I give and bequeath to Mary Coppin my wife whome I make my sole executrix of this my last will and testament upon condicon following (That is to say)
that wtin sixe monethes next after my decease shall enter into bond unto my overseers And upon condicon that before she shall marry againe shall at the discretion of my overseers or the most part of them put in good and sufficient bonde wth sureties therein to be bound wth her to my trustye frends Vincent Denne, Thomas Denne, Willia Kingesmill, Thomas Elgar, Clerke and John Cookin whome I make overseers of this my last will and testament
That she shall paye all debts, legacyes and bequethes according to this my last will & testament & bringing up of all my sayd children wth sufficiente meate drinke apparell & learning according to the discretion of my sayd overseers
And as they grow up in yeres so to have some competent sume of monye in ther purses as my overseers shall thinke mete and convenyent

And my meaning is that the ten pounds by the yere for the use of the two hundred pounds hereafter specyfied shall go towards the education and lerning of my thre sonnes William, Thomas and John Coppin & discharge my sayd wife by so muche thereof and of the burden thereof as farreforthe as the same will stretche

And if that Mary my wife shall refuse to be executrix unto this my last will and testament upon suche condicon as is before mentioned, Then my mind that my trusty frendes Thomas Denne and John Cookin do take upon them to be executors of this my last will and testament in such sort and condicon as I have apointed unto Mary my wife, And then I will that they shall paye her one hundred markes in monye or mony worthe in full recompense of all other legacyes & bequethes before to her bequethed

Item I will unto William Coppin my sonne the sume of 100 markes pcell of that hundred pound of monye wch my brother Cookin oweth me
And I will unto John Coppin my sonne the residue of that sume of one hundred poundes, that is to say thirtie three poundes, sixe shillings & eyght pence,
And I will into Thomas Coppin my sonne the sume of one hundred markes pcell of that hundred poundes wch is in the handes of Thomas Dene my brother in lawe
And I will unto John Coppin my sonne the residue of that sume of one hundred poundes, That is to saye thirtie three poundes, sixe shillings & eyght pence

And my mind is that the sayd John Cookin enter into bonde wthin one moneth after my decease unto the sayd William Coppin for the payment of the same hundred markes on the day of the full age of one and twentie yeres of the sayd William Coppin together wth fyve markes by the yere for the use of the same monye during his sayd nonage [minority] towards his exhibicon in lerning
And I will that the sayd John Cookin shall enter one other bond wthin one monethe next after my decease unto John Coppin my sonne for the payment of the same thirtie three poundes, sixe shillings & eyght pence, on the day of the full age of one and twentie yeres of the sayd John Coppin together wth five nobles by the yere for the use of the same monye during his sayd nonage towards his exhibition in lerning or other education at the discretion of my overseers

And I will that the sayd Thomas Denne enter into bonde wthin one monethe next after my decease unto Thomas Coppin my sonne for the payment of the same hundred markes on the day of the full age of one and twentie yeres of the sayd Thomas Coppin together wth fyve markes by the yere for the use of the same monye during his sayd nonage towards his exhibicon in lerning
Item I will that the sayd Thomas Denne shall enter into one other bonde wthin one monethe next after my decease unto John Coppin my sonne for the payment of the same thirte three pounds sixe shillings & eyght pence or on the day of ther full age of one and twentie yeres of the sayd John Coppin together with fyve nobles by the yere for the use of the same monye during his nonage towards his exhibicon in lerning or otherwise at the discretion of my overseers

Item I will that the bondes wch the sayd Thomas Denne and John Cookin shall enter info shall remayne in the handes of my overseers to the use of my sayd sonnes
Item I will if any of my sayd sonnes fortune to dye before ther fullages of one and twentie yeres that then the one to be the others heyer of the sayd sonnes And if all my sayd sonnes fortune to dye before ther sayd full ages of one and twentie yeres, Then I will the same sumes shall remayne to my daughters then lyving equally betwene them to be devyided

Item I will unto the sayd Thomas Denne fortie shillings by the yere during his lyfe out of my landes in Deale Upon this consideration that he shall stand in defence of my sayd children their landes and porcons and to be an ayde an(d) helper to them both to se them brought up, And also to se them take no wrong as nere as he can
Item I will that as often as my overseers & executors shall travell about this testament or the execution thereof that then ther costs & charges be borne and allowed out of my moveable goods
Item I give unto every one of my overseers for their paynes fortie shillings

This is the laste Will of me the sayd John Coppin made the day and yere above written as touching the disposicion of my landes and tentes. [tenements]

First I will unto William Coppin my sonne and to the heyres males of his bodye lawfully begotten my messuage or tent. wher I now dwell wt al the landes that I purchased of Mr. Thomas Boyse lying in the parishe of Deale, And also my messuage or tents. & lands wch I purchased of Roger Usborne lying in the parishes of Deale and Sholden And my messuage contents & lands wch I purchased of Mathew Persey lying in the parishes of Deale, Sholden & Great Mongham
And one acre and ten foote of land wch I purchased of Leonard Raignoldes lying in the parishe of Deale, And one halfe acre of land wch I purchased of Raphe Smyth, And one halfe acre of land wch I purchased of John Best both lying in the parishe of Deale, and one messuage of tente. wth halfe an acre of land with thappurtenncs [the appurtenances] which I bought of Thomas Saunder late of Deale deceased lying in Deale aforsaide

All which landes, messuages or Tenements I will unto the said William Coppin my sonne & to his heires males of his body lawfully begotten together wth all dedes evidences writtings & obligacons touching or concerning the same,
And if he dy wtout issue male of his bodye lawfully begotten Then I will all the said landes tentes. and messuages shall remayne unto Thomas Coppin and John Coppin his brethren & to the heires males of their bodyes lawfully begotten

Item I will unto Thomas Coppin my sonne & to the heires males of his bodye lawfully begotten my landes & tenementes & hereidtaments whiche I purchased of John Palmer of Dymchurche lying in the parishes of Deale, Sholden & great Mongham And twentie fyve acres of mrshe [marsh] land lying in the parishe of lyme? wch I purchased of William Dilnot of Alkham, All whiche landes together with all dedes, evidences, writings & obligacons touching or concerning the same I will to the sayd Thomas Coppin & to the heires males of his bodye begotten
And for defaut of suche issue I will the sayd landes and other the pmisses [premises] shall remayne to his brethren William and John Coppin & to the heires males of their bodyes lawfully begotten

Item I will unto John Coppin my sonne and to his heires males of his bodyelawfully begotten my messuage or tente. & lands lying in the pishe of Rile [Ripple] and my messuage of tente. & lands lying in the parishes of East Langden, Westcliffe, Gustone and bewishfeild [East Langdon, Westcliff, Guston and Whitfield?] Al which landes and messuages or tentes. together wt all dedes, evidences, writtings & obligacons touching or concerning the same I will unto John Coppin my sonne and to the heires males of his bodye lawfully begotten And for default of suche issue I will they shall remayne to his two brethren William & Thomas Coppin And to the heires males of their bodyes lawfully begotten

And if all that my sayd thre sonnes fortune to decease wtout heire male of their bodyes lawfully bgotten And after that I shalbe deceased wtout issue male of my bodye begotten Then I will that all my sayd messuages lands & tentes. severally before bequethed shall remayne unto my sixe daughters Bridget Horne, Justine Man, Katheren Coppin, Mary Coppin, Margaret Coppin & Martha Coppin and to the heires of ther bodyes lawfull begotten

Provided alwayes that if Mary my wife shall take upon her to be executrix of this my will & Testament wt suche condicon & forme as before in my Testament is declared Then I will that the sayd Mary my wife if she so long live towards the bringing up of my said children & payment of my detts and legacyes shall severally take the issues and profitts of all the parts of my sayd messuages landes and tentes. before to my said three sonnes severally bequethed untill suche tyme as my said sonnes shall sevrally accomplishe the age of twentie and one yeres wthout any accompt do be made for the same, the sayd Mary keping the reparacons of the howsing standing upon the same and paying to the lords of the fee their severall rents customes and services during the sayd tyme

And if she do refuse to take upon her to be executrix as before is limited or that she fortune to dye before that my sayd sonnes shall accomplishe ther ages of one and twentie yeres, Then I will the sayd Thomas Denne and John Cookin shall severally take the issues and profits of all the partes of the sayd messuages lands & tentes. & lease land of Deale prbend untill suche tyme asmy sayd thre sonnes shall severally accomplishe the age of one and twentie yeres, towards the bringing up of my sayd children both sonnes and daughters as before n this my testament is set forth and declared & towards the payment of my detts & legacyes, they keping the reparacons and paying to the lordes of the fee their sevrall rents customes and services as before is limited

Item I will that if any sute arise hereafter about any of my landes that the costes and charges in defence thereof be borne out of the profits of my said landes And if any ambugnotye [ambiguity] or doubt hereafter happen to growe about the disposecion of the wordes of this my last will and testament then the exposicion thereof be referred to the discretion of my sayd overseers

* Mazer - a special type of wooden drinking vessel, a wide cup or shallow bowl without handles, with a broad flat foot and a knob or boss in the centre of the inside, known technically as the print or boss.
John Coppin married Mary Denne 13th May 1560 at St. Leonard, Deal. The actual entry reads: “John Coppyn & Mary Denn”. He was allegedly buried on 23rd May 1581 at St. Leonard, Deal.
