Thomas Coveney of Hinxhill, Gent, will dated 5 March 1685/6
My body I commit to the earth to be decently interres at the discretion of my loving Son John Coveney whome I doe hereby make and Constitute the sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament
40 shillings to the poore of the parish of Hinxhill

�20 to my dear and loving wife Elizabeth and all such householstuffe and plate as was hers at the time of our Intermarryage

I give and devise unto my said deare wife and her assignes for and during the Terme of her naturall life One Annuity or yearely rent Charge of �30 to be issueing and goeing received and taken out of all that my six peeces or parcels of Meadow and pasture land with their appurtenances containing in all by estimacon 22 acres more or lesse, one of which is commonly called or knowne by the name of Chalkers; three other of the said peeces or parcels of land are called or commonly knowne by the name of Roger Brooker or by whatsoever other name or names the same or any parte thereof and are together scituate, lying and being in the severall parishes of Wye and Hinxhill aforesaid to the lands now or late of Sir George Chute towards the East to the Kings Highway there towards the South to the Lands now or late of Paul Lofty, gent Lord to the lands now or late of Mr Peter Marsh towards the West and to the lands now or late of the said Peter Marsh towards the North, and now in my own occupacon; And out of all those my 25 acres more or lesse of Fresh Marshland with the appurtenances scituate, ling and being in the parish of Snave in Romney Marsh and now in my occupacon; And out of all those my Four messuages or Tenements with the Stables, Outhouses, Gardens, Orchards and appurtenances thereunto belonging or therewith used or injoyed, scituate lying and being in the parishes of St Mildred and St Mary de Castro or in one of them in or neere the Citty of Canterbury in a Street there called Wincheape Streete and now or late in the tenure or occupacons of John Parker, John Rigden, Samuell Wood and Samuell Ellit or their assignes
Payable quarterly by even and equall porcons
Which said Annuity or yearely Rent Charge I doe hereby give unto my said wife in liew Recompence and satisfaction of and for her Dower and title of Dower which she may clayme out of all or any the messuages, lands or Tenements which I shall be seised of at the time of my death And that if my said wife shall not be contented with the said Annuity in full of her said Dower but shall clayme or sue for dower of in or out of my said Messuages, lands or tenements or any part thereof, then my will and meaning is that the said Annuity or yearely rent charge of �30 shall cease and determine And that then she shall have noe benefit by this my will nor what is hereby given, devised or bequeathed unto her

Item, I give and besueath unto my loving Daughter Elizabeth, the wife of Herbert Woodward, Gent, the summe of �20 over and above the portion of �1000 I have agreed to give her in Marriage already

Item, I give and bequeath unto my three servants William Colvell, William Shervall and Mary Wood to each of them 20 shillings apeece if they shall continue my servants until the time of my decease

And I do desire my loving Friend Joseph Webb of the Citty of Canterbury, Gent, to be the Overseer of this my Will and to be ayding and assisting to my said Son and Executor John Coveney in the due execution and performance of this my Will And I doe give to my said Overseer the summe of �10 for his trouble therein

All the Rest and Residue of my personall estate not herein before given and bequeathed, my debts, legacys, funeral expences and the probate of this my Will being first payd and discharged, I give and bequeath unto my said Son John Coveney, his heires and assignes for ever All my aforesaid Messuages, lands and Tenements and other the premises with the appurtenances (charged as aforesaid) And also all other my Messuages, lands, Tenements and hereditaments whatsoever

Thus having settled my worldly estate, I wholly recommend my selfe unto Almighty God waiting with patience until he shall please to take me out of this transitory life and translate me into his everlasting Kingdome of Glory

In witness whereof to this my last Will and testament contained in three sheetes of paper, I have to every of the said sheetes sett my hand and seale this fifth day of March in the year of our Lord 1685
