Summary of Edenbridge Wills

To the best of my knowledge this table contains all wills proved before 1857 written by persons belonging to the parish of Edenbridge which survive.
Originally most wills were proved by a local clergyman and registered in the court of the bishop of Rochester (Drb) or of the archdeacon (Dra). Where a person held property in more than one diocese the will was proved in the court of the Archbishop of Canterbury (PCC), presumably at Lambeth, near London. As time elapsed an increasing number of the wills were proved in the archbishop's court and by the end of the 18th century the Rochester courts were virtually extinct as far as southwest Kent was concerned. It is interesting to observe that the total number of wills peaked in the period 1625-49, with an earlier peak 1550-1574. By the early 19th century the number of wills was less, despite the increasing population. In 1858 the PCC was abolished.
Early wills are partly in Latin and I do not claim to be able to understand them fully. As well as the wills described below there are, of course, hundreds of wills of people from other parishes who owned property in Edenbridge.
