In the Name of God Amen The xiijth daye of Julye The xvjth yeare of the Reynge of o[u]r Sourayngne Ladie Quene Elizabethe
I Wyllyam Gervise of Tenterden in the countie of Kente yoman being weke of body but of good and p[er]fecte Remembrance, thancks be unto God, do ordeyne and make this my present Testamente & laste will in forme following (That is to saye)
Firste I comende my soule unto the mercie of the lorde hoping to be saved onelye thorowghe the meritts of christes passion loking also for the Resurrection of the bodie unto lyfe imortall, my bodye to be buried in Christian buriall

Item I bequethe unto fower poore men to carie me to the churche to every of them xijd
Item I will and my mynde is that Mr. Elye vicar of Tenterden shall make some godly sermon at my buriall suche as it shall please God to move hym unto whome I give vjs viijd
Item I bequethe unto the poore people of Tenterden aforesaid xxvjs viiijd to be Distributed by the discretion of myne Executor in the daye of my buriall

Item I Give and Bequethe unto Katherine my wife my best Joyned Bedstedell, my best truckle bedd wth the hangings to the same And also the one half of all my other howsholde stuffe wch I shall have at the tyme of my decease excepte suche howseholde stuffe as hereafter is specially appoynted to Remayne to my howse wherein Edwarde my sonne nowe dwellethe
Also I give and bequethe unto the said Katheryne my wife the some of Thirtie Poundes of lawfull money of Yngland to be payed unto her or to her assignes in forme following (That is to say) wthin one half yeare next after my Decease the some of Fifteene Pounds and wthin one hole yeare next after my decease other Fifteene Pounds in full paymente of the said Thirtie Poundes

Item I bequethe unto John Gervise my sonne the some of Fower skore Poundes of lawfull money of Yngland to be paied unto him the said John or to his assignes in forme following (That is to say) wthin one half yeare next after my Decease the some of Fortie Poundes and wthin one hole yeare next after my decease other Fortie Poundes
Item I bequethe unto my two Daughters Amy & Alce to everye of them Tenne Poundes of lawfull money of Yngland to be paied unto them wthin two yeares next after my decease

Item I Bequethe unto Edwarde Gervise my sonne the some of Fortie Poundes lawfull mony of Yngland being p[ar]cell of one hundred Poundes wch the said Edwarde dothe owe unto me
Also I do further give and bequethe unto the said Edwarde my sonne other Fortie Poundes of like lawfull money of Yngland to be paied unto hym the said Edwarde his executors or assignes wthin one yeare next after my decease
Item I bequethe unto Wyllyam Gervise my sonne the Some of three skore Poundes of lawfull money of Yngland being the residue of the said Hundred Poundes the wch the said Edwarde my sonne doethe owe unto me

Item I give & bequethe unto the said John Gervise my sonne my greate Caldron
Item I bequethe unto him Also my worste Corcelett wth all furnyture to the same Corsslett belonging, one skull & an Armynge bowe

Item I will and bequethe unto Thomas Manynge, Robert Ruddall, John Donney and to the other poore people of Tenterden aforesaid yearely during the terme of Tenne yeares next after my decease the some of xxiiijs to be paied & distributed unto the said Thomas Manynge, Roberte Ruddall, John Donney & to the other poore peopple aforesaid yerely at the discreation of the Churche wardens of Tenterden aforesaid for the tyme being And of my three sonns, And to be yerely borne and paied at the equall charges of my said three sonnes or the[i]r Executors or assignes on Good frydaye

Item I will all suche bedstedles excepte suche as before are specyally given unto the said Katherine my wife, and all tables, formes, trestels, shelves, Copbords & planckes nowe belonging and being to my said house wherein the said Edwarde my sonn nowe dwellethe And also three of my greatest braches?, my two best dreping [dripping] pannes, one payer of Cobyrons and my beste brasse pott shall Remayne & contynue to my said howse to the use of the said William my sonne and his heyers

Item I bequethe unto Katherine Hudson iijs iiijd
The Residue of all my moveable goodes & cattells, my debtes, legacies and funerall expences firste contented, satisfied and paied, I give & bequethe unto the said William my sonne
the wch said William I do constitute, ordeyne & make my sole Executor of this my presente Testamente and laste will

Item I give unto Richarde Arnold wiffe of lyd? the some of Three poundes of lawfull monye of Yngland upon condicion that he the said Richarde Arnolde shall acquite and discharge my saied Executor and his assignes of for and concerning the some of Twentie pounds wch was given unto the wife of hym the said Richarde by the laste will & Testamente of Margaret Dorborne late deceased, to be paied unto the said Richarde wthin one yeare next after my decease

Item I bequethe unto John Woodgate & William Woodgate to either of them the some of xxs of lawfull money of Yngland to be paied unto them Imediatly after my Decease

This is the Laste Will of me the said William Gervise made & declared the day & yeare Above wrytten concerninge All & singuler my leases, landes, Tenements and herditaments wth Thapprtennces [The Appurtenances] whatsoever or whearsoever set Lying and being wthin the Countie of Kente or ells where

Firste I will and give unto Wyllyam Gervise my sonne all that same my Messuage or Tenements and all the lands therto apperteyning wth Thapprtennces nowe in the tenure and occupacon of John Holman or of his assignes the wch I lately purchased of George Frowdes to be had to him the said Wyllyam & to his heyers for ever
Item I will and give unto the said William Gervise my sonne one little Tenement, one barne, one garden and one peace of land wth Thapprtennces lying and being in Readinge wthin the hundred of Tenterden aforesaid the wch I late purchased of John Rede to be hadd to hym the said William and his heyers for ever
Item I will and give unto the said William my sonne All and singuler the yssues Revenues and profittes of my farme or lease called Frenge haye during all the terme of yeares yet to come of the same leas(e) wch I shoulde by Indenture or Roberte Downes gent[leman] towardes the p[er]formance and Execution of this my prsent testament and last will

Provided allwayes and my Will and mynde is that Edwarde my sonne & his assignes shall have and occupie the same Farme called Frenge haye during the said terme of yeares yett to come of the same lease Excepte suche lands therof nowe in the occupacon of George Potter or of his assignes
The said Edwarde my sonne to paye therfore yearely unto my said sonne William or his assignes the Some of three Skore Poundes at two termes in the yeare (That is to say) At the Feasts of Thannunciacion of the Virgeyn And St. Mighell Tharchangell or wthin Fourteene dayes next after any of the said Feasts And my said sonne Willm or his assignes shall ever dischardge & pay the Rents & farme therfore yearely due unto the said Robte. Downes or his heyres

Item I will that John Gervise my sonne and his assignes shall have and occupie fower peaces of m[a]rsheland nowe in the tenure & occupacion of the same John Gervise & farme wch I houlde of Raphe Hetherington gent[leman], the said fower peaces of lande do conteyne Three Skore and Tenne Acres whether of the same be more or lesse he the said John Gervise or his assignes paying for Three Skore Acres p[ar]cell of the same unto my Executor or to his assignes the some of Six poundes of lawfull mony of Yngland everye yerare during the terme of the olde lease and for everye other Acre of the same over and above the same Three Skore Acres after the rate of the oulde lease
And after thende [the end] of the oulde lease untill the full ende of the newe lease of the sme for everye Acre therof viijs during all the terme of the newe lease of the same landes At the Feasts of Thannunciacon of our ladie And sainte Michaell Tharchangell by equall porcions or wthin Fourteene daies next after any of the said Feasts

Item I will that Edwarde my sonne and his Assignes shall have and occupie Five pcells of mershland being also pcell of the aforesaid lease wch I houlde of the said Raphe Hetherington conteyning by estimacion Three skore & fouer Acres whether of the same be more or lesse during all the terme of the oulde & newe lease, he the said Edwarde or his Assignes paying therefore yearely for every Acre during the oulde lease unto my saied Executor or to this assignes after the rate of the oulde lease, And for everye Acre thereof yerely during the newe lease viijs to be paied at the Feastes & termes Aforesaid or wthin Fourteene dayes next after the same Feastes, whiche saied Five peaces of mershland are nowe in the occupacion and Tenure of William Marden, John Gervise, Erasmus Giles and Welle's widowe

Item I will to the said William my sonne the profittes & yssues of Five pcells of mershland Also pcell of the said farme & lease conteyning by estimacion Three skore & five Acres more or lesse in the occupacion of me the said William Gervise, George Gervise and William Longe's widowe

Provided Allwayes that my Executor or his assignes shall from tyme to tyme Acquite, Discharge and pay the Rente and farme of all the lands aforesaid Due & to be due to the said Raphe Hetherington or his heyres & therof shall allwaies acquite and Discharge the said John and Edwarde ther heires and assignes

Provided Also that they the said John and Edwarde and there heires and assignes shall beare like and equall charges withe my said Executor or his assignes towardes the pareing upp of the same aforesaid to London
Provided Also that yf my moveable goods be not sufficiente to paye and Dischrage all my Debtes, legacies & bequests then I will the profittes of the lands and Tenements wth thapprtenncs before given unto Wyllyam my sonne shall goe towardes the pformannce of this my prsente Testamente and Laste will untill my said Debtes, Legacies and bequests be fully Satisfied, contented and paied Any thing before to the contrarie in any wise nottwthstanding

Also I will that yf the said John Gervise and Edward Gervise or theire heieres or assignes or any of them do not Satisfie contente and pay unto my said Executor or to his assignes the sevrall farme and Tente before appoynted to be paied for there sevrall porcions of mersheland of the lease aforesaid wthin Five weekes next after any of the said Feasts in whiche as afore ys lymyted to be paied That then and at all tymes after suche Defaulte or defaultes of payment it shalbe lawfull to and for the said William my sonne his heyers or assignes into the p[ar]te or porcion of hym or them so makinge Defaulte to Reenter And the same to have and enyoye to his and theire owne use Any thing before to the contrarye nott wthstandinge

"The 11th [September 1574] was Willam Jarvis buried" at St. Mildred, Tenterden, Kent.
Edward Gervis was baptised 16 Feb 1549, s. of William, at Tenterden.
