First I do give and bequeath unto my loving wife Joane the summe of Twenty pounds of good
English money to be paid to her by my said executor within three months next after my decease if
she shall so long live
Item I do give and bequeath unto her my said wife Joane and her assignes for and during the term
of her natural life all that my messuage with the buildings gardens orchards and about ten acres
of land therewith now used being in the occupation of Humphry Baldwin or his assignes situate
lying and being in Plaxtall aforesaid in the said parish of Wrotham
And after her decease then I do give and devise the same messuage and premises with the
appurtenances unto my said son William Hodsoll and to his heirs and assignes for ever
And whereas I am and stand possessed of a certain term of divers years yett to come and unexpired
of and in the messuage or tenement wherein I now dwell and of the Orchard thereto belonging which
was heretofore granted unto my said wife Joane by her late deceased Master Captain Stanley
which said Lease and term therein she my said wife formerly assigned unto me Now my will and meaning is
and I do so will and order that she my said wife Joane and her assignes shall have hold and enjoy
the said messuage tenement and orchard and receive and take the rents and profits thereof to her
and their own use and uses for so long of the said term therein to come after my decease as she
my said wife shall live she my said wife keeping the said messuage in repair paying the rent and
performing the Covenants contained in the Lease thereof
And after her decease then I do give and bequeath the said messuage and orchard with the
appurtenances and all the term of years therein then to come and unexpired unto my said son
William Hodsoll his executors administrators and Assignes during all the continuance of the said
Lease
Item I do give and bequeath unto my younger son Francis Hodsoll one of my Feather beds now
being in the kitchen Chamber in my now dwelling house together with the bedsteddle bolster pillow
blankets coverlett and all things thereto belonging three pair of sheets two pillowbeers one table
in the hall chamber in my now dwelling house and one chest and one chair being in the same room
and two silver spoons all which said goods and chattles I do appoint my said executor to deliver
to him my said son Francis Hodsoll within one week next after my decease
Item I do give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Joane and my said son and executor William
Hodsoll all other my household stuffe plate and linnen whatsoever not by me before herein given
and disposed of equally to be divided and shared between them share and share alike within one
month next after my decease
Item I do give and bequeath unto my good friend and kinsman Mr Edmund Hodsoll of St Mary Cray in the said County of Kent one Guinea piece of gold of the value of one and twenty shillings and six pence to buy him something to keep in remembrance of me
Item I give to the poor people of the Congregation at Maydstone in Kent whereof I am a Member the
summe of three pounds which I so will and appoint my said executor to pay into the hands of
David Browne of Langley within one month next after my decease whom I desire to distribute
amongst the said poor people as he shall think fitt within one month next after he shall have
received the same
Item I do give and bequeath to the poor people that shall be inhabiting in Plaxtall aforesaid at
the time of my decease the summe of twenty shillings
And I do also give to the poor people of Ightham in the said County the like summe of twenty
shillings which I do order my said executor to distribute amongst them within one month next after
my decease
Item I do give and bequeath unto my said son Francis Hodsoll the summe of one hundred pounds of good English money to be paid unto him one year after my decease (if he shall be then living) upon condition that he my said son Francis Hodsoll do give unto my said executor a full discharge for all such money as I shall owe unto him at the time of my decease
Item I do give and bequeath unto my said son Francis Hodsoll and to his assignes for and during
the term of his natural life one annuity or yearly rent charge of sixteen pounds of lawfull money of
England to be yearly issuing and going out of and in all those my six severall pieces or parcells
of land comonly called or known by the several names of the lower Grounds Hornes Lodge Westfield
Rockyfield and the Thouge containing altogether by estimation Twenty acres more or less which I
lately purchased to me and my heirs of Mrs Miller and her son Humphry Miller gent. lying
and being in Plaxtall aforesaid in the parish of Wrotham aforesaid and now in my own occupation
and also out of and in all my barn workhouse cartlodg and buildings and my lands thereunto
belonging and adjoining called Sheetes Mead Theobalds Deane and the Shawes of Wood and the Grove
thereto belonging being now in my own occupation situate and being in Plaxtall aforesaid in the
parish of Wrotham aforesaid And also out of and in all those my four parcells of land called
Hareland Field the Old Hopgarden the Brookes and the four acres which I purchased of John Yopp
lying and being in Plaxtall aforesaid in the parish of Wrotham to have hold leavy receive perceive
and take the said annuity or yearly rent charge of sixteen pounds unto him my said son Francis
Hodsoll and his assignes for and during the term of his natural life payable on two of the most
usual Feasts or dayes of payment in the year (That is to say) the Feasts of St Michael the
Archangell and the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary half yearly by equall portions at or
in the messuage wherein I now dwell situate in Plaxtall aforesaid the first payment thereof to
begin and be made on that Feast of the Feasts aforesaid which shall next come after my decease
And my will and meaning is that if it shall happen the said yearly rent of sixteen pounds or any
part thereof to be behind and unpaid by the space of fifteen dayes next ensuing after either or
any of the said feasts or dayes of payment on which the same ought to be paid as aforesaid being
lawfully demanded That then and so often it shall and may be lawfull to and for my said son
Francis Hodsoll and his assignes for and during the term of his natural life to enter into and
upon all my said barne workhouse cartlodge buildings lands and premises before herein mentioned
or intended to be hereby chargeable with the said annuity of sixteen pounds and to distrain for
the same and the distress and distresses then and there found and taken to lead drive bear have
take and carry away impound detain and keep untill he and they shall be fully satisfied the said
yearly rent so behind and unpaid together with his and their costs and charges by that occasion
sustained
Item I do give and bequeath unto my brother John Hodsoll and his assignes for and during
the term of his natural life one annuity or yearly rent charge of forty shillings of lawfull money
of England to be had taken received issuing and going out of and in all my said Barne workhouse
cartlodge buildings lands and premises whatsoever before herein mentioned or intended to be
chargeable with the said annuity of sixteen pounds per ann. to my said son Francis Hodsoll and his
assignes To have hold leavy receive and take the said annuity or yearly rent of forty shillings
unto my said brother John Hodsoll and his assignes for and during the term of his natural life
payable on two of the most usual Feasts before mentioned by equall portions at or in the said
messuage wherein I now dwell And my will is that the first payment thereof shall begin and be made
on such of the said Feasts as shall next come after my decease
And my will and mind is that in case it shall happen the said Annuity or yearly rent of forty
shillings or any part thereof to be behind and unpaid by the space of Fifteen daies next ensuing
after either or any of the said Feasts on which the same is or ought to be paid as aforesaid
(being lawfully demanded) That then and so often it shall and may be lawfull to and for my said
brother John Hodsoll and his assignes to enter into and upon the said Barne workhouse cartlodge
buildings lands and premises before herein mentioned or intended to be hereby chargeable with the
said Annuity of Forty shillings per Ann. and to distrain for the said Annuity and all arrearages
thereof and the distress and distresses then and there found and taken to bear lead drive have
take and carry away impound detain and keep untill he and they shall be fully satisfied and paid
the said yearly Rent of Forty shillings so behind and unpaid together with his and their costs
and expences by that occasion sustained
And I do hereby will and order that both the said Annuities by me before herein given to my said son Francis Hodsoll and my said brother John Hodsoll shall be alwaies paid free and clear of all manner of deductions for taxes charges or any other impositions whatsoever
And all the rest and remainder of all my reall Estate Messuages Lands Tenements and hereditaments
whatsoever and wheresoever and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders thereof I
do give and devise unto my said son William Hodsoll and to his heirs and assignes for ever
(chargeable with the said Annuities herein given to my said son Francis and my said brother John)
And I do give and bequeath unto my said son William Hodsoll also all the rest and remainder of my
personal Estate for the performance of this my last Will and the overplus thereof I do give him
for his own use
And I do revoke all former wills by me made and do appoint this to be my last Will and Testament
contained in three sheets of paper In Witness whereof I have to every sheet of this my Will sett
my hand and Seal this eight Day of October in the Fifth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady

published and declared by the said William Hodsoll the Testator for his last Will and Testament
in the presence of us who subscribed our names hereto in his presence
