In the name of God Amen The xxiijth of Februrie and in the yere of our Lord God [1556]
I John Holmys of the parish of Appuldore do make this my Laste will and testament in man[ne]r and forme followinge
First I bequethe my soule to allmightie God and to all his hollie companey in heaven And my bodie to be buried in the churche yarde of Apledore aforesaid

Item I bequethe to the high aulter for my tithes forgotten a xxd
Item I give at my owt bearinge [e.g. my burial] to the poore iijs iiijd
Item I will to have at my owt bearinge ij masses and one dirige [Roman Catholic service for the dead.]
Item I bequethe to Father Cartar and to Father Richard to either of them one old cote

Item I give and bequethe to William Holmys my brothers son and to William Grannte the sone of Xpofer [Christopher] Grannte to either of them one ewe Lambe to be delivered to them at midsomer next after my decease

The residue of all my moveable goods and cattall I give and bequethe to Johan my wife whome I make sole executory of this my Last Testament
And Rawlen Parnell to be my ovrseer [overseer] of this testament and to have for his labors [labours] vijd and his expenses

Item I will and ordeigne that Johan my wiff shall ymediatlie [immediately] after my decease selle and deliver a sufficent lande unto Thomas Holmys my Brother for the dischardge of one obligacon that he standeth bonnden in for the payment of certen summes of money to my Wives children as in the Last will of their father more at Lardge it dothe appere And allso for a certene money given by ther mother as in that obligacon it doth appere

This is the last Will of me John Holmys declared and made the daie and yere first above writen

Item I will to Johan my wif all my Landes dureing her naturall Lif And after her decease I will all my Lande shall remaine to Edward Bunce the Younger son of Richard Bunce late of Appledore deceased for the terme and space of ij integrate yeres if he be then liveinge And after that ij yeres be fullie completed ad ended I will that all my saide Lande shall remaine to Thomas Holmys my Brother and to his heires for ever

Item I will and forgive my Brother Thomas Holmes (!) all manner of debtes and other demaunds had movinge? or dependinge betwene me and my Brother from the beginninge of the Worlde unto the date of this pntes [presents]

Notes: Early Appledore CMB have not been transcribed. A quick look shows they are in a terrible state, so it is understandable!
