In the name of God Ame in the first day of Julye in the yere from thincanacon [the annunciation] of oure Lord Jesus Christe a Thowsande fyve hundrithe Trescore and Seaven [1567]
I Henry Holmes of the towne and porte of Newe Rumney [New Romney] in the countye of Kent and in the Dioces of Canterburye sycke in bodye but whole and perfecte of remembrannce thanked bee allmightye God do make my testament and Last Will in manner and forme followinge
First I give and bequithe my Sole to allmightye God my Maker and Redeemer and my bodye to be buryed in the pyshe [parish] chuech yearde of St. Nicholas in Newe Rumneye (sic) aforesaide

Imprimis as towchinge my Lands and tenements I will that Thomas Taplyn and Thomas Goddarde my brothers in lawe or one of them shall so muche of my house Barne Lado and [microfilm damaged here] and beinge in Smarden in the county of Kent as they the saide Thomas Taplin and Thomas Goddard or eyther of them thinketh so shall thinke goode to suffice to pay my Legacyes and within one whole yere next after my deceasse to what persons or person they or eyther of them will, and shall receyve the money payable for the same house and lands & olde? to the accompelyshemente [accomplishment] and fulfilline of my Legacyes and the paymente of the same Legacyes in manner and forme as herefter is expressed

First I give and bequiethe of the same money recyved to Willm. Padyam sonne of Martyn Padiam Fyve pounds of good money of Englande to be paide to the said Willm. Padyam within one yere after my decease And if the said Willm. do dye before thend [the end] of the said yere then I will the said Fyve pound shall remaine to Henrye Taplyn sonne of the said Thomas

Item I do geve to everye Childe of the foure children nowe whereof the one childe is unborne, of John Morrys of Snargat [Snargate] Twentye shillings of good and lawfull money of Englande to be pide unto them and evry [every] of them as they do come to ther ages if fiwrtene yeres and if anye of them do dye before ther said age then I wyll that the Survyvour and Surveyvours of them shall have ther Legacyes that shall be dead before ther said Ages

Item I geve and bequithe to my Brother Thomas Goddarde Fortie shillinges of good money of Englande to be paid within the yere aforesaide
Item I geve to Henrye Taplyn foresaide Forty shillings of goode money of Englande to be paid him within the yere aforesaide

Further I will and do geve and bequithe unto my Sister Marye Holmes thone [the one] halfe of all my said house, Barne, Lado, orcharde and Lands wch [which] shall remaine unsolde, on condicon that the said Marye shall agre and be contented that her Legacie of Thirtye shillings wch my Brother Arthur dyd geve hyr and remaine towards the payeinge of thes my Legacyes To have and to hold the saide halfe of all my said house, Barnes, Lado Orchard & Lands soulde unto my said Syster Marye to her her heires and assignes on condicon aforesaid forever

And the Residewe of all my said houses Barnes Lado orchards and Lands wth thappurtenannces [the appurtenances] I do geve and bequithe to Margarett Taplyn my Syster to her heyres and assignes for ever

Item I do geve and bequithe to the pore people of Newe Rumney (sic) aforesaid Twentye shillings of good money of Englande to be distributed amonge them by the said Thomas Taplyn and Thomas Goddarde wthin [within] thafforesaide [the aforesaid] yere, of the wch xxs I will that mother Hennam shall have fyve shillings

Witnes heareof Richard Godfrey thelder John Eyore? John Bucklyn and John Forrett

And I do ordeyne and make my said Brother Thomas Taplyn and Thomas Goddarde my Executors to this my last Will and testamente trewely [truly] performed

Item I doe geve and bequithe to Thomas Adames and William Adames sonnes of Thomas Adames of Smarden fower pounds of goode money of Englande to be paid unto them wthin one hole yere nexte after my decease
Item I do geve unto Stephen Bickerstafe my blacke coate my russett hoses and my worst hat
Item I do geve to Henrye Tomkyns my Browne Jerkyn and my worst bootes
Item I geve to Xpofer [Christopher] Gyllett my canvas dublett and my ruff Lether Jerkyn
Item I geve to Willm Padyam my cheste

I will that my best hoses my best chiste and my gowne and my Sworde & my bowe shall be soulde And all my other apparell I geve to my Brother Thomas Taplyn whom I do ordeyne and appoint to see my debts paid owte of my Lands being soulde
Item I do geve and bequithe unto Willm. Padyam and Henry Taplyn my beste two napkins

Notes: New Romney Parish Registers commence in 1567. There are no early CMB for Holmes (sic) in this parish.
