Will of John Holmes

of Eltham, Kent

In the Name of God Amen I John Holmes of the Parish of Eltham in the County of Kent Surveyor being of sound disposing mind and memory (thanks be to God for the same) do make and ordain this my Will in manner and form following that is to say
First I commend my Soul to Almighty God and my Body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors herein after named
Imprimis my Debts and Funeral Charges being first paid and satisfied I give and dispose of my Worldly Substance as followeth

Item I give to my Daughter Mary Holmes Fifty Pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid to her by my Executors within Six Months next after my decease
Item I give to my Daughter Sarah Holmes Fifty Pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid to her by my Executors within Six Months next after my decease
and I do hereby order direct and appoint my Executors to pay to my said Daughter Sarah Holmes the sum of Fifty Pounds more for Service due to me at the same time

Item I give and bequeath to my said Daughters Mary and Sarah Holmes all my Household Goods to be equally divided between them (Except) the Stove with Iron Spud and Fender together with the Brass Shovell and Tongs thereunto belonging standing in my Bed Chamber being my Daughter Sarah�s already

Item I give to my Daughter Ann Hutchins Ten Pounds to be laid out by my Executors to settle her in Business as they shall think most proper and that the said Money may not come to her Husband�s Hands but if she should happen to die before she is settled in Business then I will that the said Money go and be applied towards Cloaths and Education of her Children at the discretion of my Executors and if they die then the Money to be divided amongst all my Children

Item I will that my Lease I have of the Parish Field be sold with the Hay and Wood thereon and likewise my Books and Instruments and new Plan of the Manor of Eltham which Money and what remains over and above what I have already bequeathed and what I give to my Executors for the Pains and Care they will have in the Execution of this my Will Likewise all good and recoverable Debts being got in and received I give and bequeath the said Money be the Sum what it will to be equally divided amongst all my Children share and share alike

Item I give to my Son John Holmes all my Plans of Land surveyed Except the Plan of the Manor of Eltham above mentioned

And I do hereby make constitute and ordain my two Sons John Holmes of Maidstone and James Holmes of Hackney to be Executors of this my Will and do give them two Guineas apiece for their Trouble

In Witness whereof I the said John Holmes have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and Seal this 20th Day of April 1741 _ John Holmes

Item I do hereby constitute and make my Daughter Sarah Holmes joint Executrix with her Brothers John Holmes and James Holmes above mentioned and do give her full Power to Act with them in the Execution of this my Will

Item also to Sadbine John Hutchings the Sum of Ten Pounds vizt. Five Pounds to put him out Apprentice and Five Pounds to Cloath him by the Direction of my Executors
Item also to Ann Hutchings the Sum of Ten Pounds to be paid six Months after my decease to be paid by my Executors within mentioned
