This is the last Will and Testament of me George Holmes of Margate in the Isle of Thanet in the County of Kent Mariner

I give and devise all my messuages lands Tenements hereditaments and real estate whatsoever with the appurts. [appurtenances] unto and to the use of my dear wife Elizabeth Holmes and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life
and from and after her decease I give and devise the same unto and to the use of my daughter Christian Holmes her heirs and assigns for ever provided she my said daughter shall survive my said wife or shall be married during the lifetime of my said wife
But if my said daughter shall die in the lifetime of my said wife unmarried then from and after such the decease of my said daughter I give and devise all my said real estate unto and to the use of my said wife her heirs and assigns absolutely and for ever

I give and bequeath to my said wife the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of great Britain to be paid to or retained by her out of the first monies which shall come to the hands of my Executors by virtue of this my Will

I give and bequeath unto my said daughter the sum of five hundred pounds of like money to be paid to her at the expiration of twelve calendar months next after my decease

I give and bequeath to my Brother John Holmes my Executor hereinafter named the sum of one thousand pounds of lawful money of Great Britain Upon Trust that he the said John Holmes shall and do with all convenient speed after my decease lay out and invest the same in the purchase of capital stock in some or one of the public stocks or stocks of this Kingdom or on good real security at interest in his own name with power to alter & transfer such funds or securities from time to time as he shall see occasion and my Will is that my said Trustee his executors and admors. [administrators] shall stand possessed of such funds or securities and of the monies placed therein Upon Trust to pay to or otherwise to permit and suffer authorise and empower her my said wife and her assigns during her life to have receive and take all the dividends interest and annual proceeds thereof for her own use and benefit

And from and after the decease of my said wife Upon Trust to pay all such dividends interest and annual proceeds into the proper hands of my said daughter Christian Holmes or to such person as she shall by any note in writing under her hand from time to time direct the same to be paid for her own sole and separate use independent of any husband whom she may marry and not to be subject to his debts conditional or such arrangements and for which the receipts of my said daughter alone notwithstanding her coverture or of her appointee shall be a sufficient discharge

And from and after the decease of my said daughter In Trust for all her Children as well Sons as Daughters who shall live to attain the age of twenty one years equally to be divided between them if more than one share and share alike and if but one then to such only Child when and as they he or she shall respectively attain the age of twenty one years the dividends and interest of the apparent share of each Child to be in the meantime applied towards his or her maintenance and education

And if my said daughter shall die without leaving any Children or Child or leaving such all of them shall die under the said age of twenty one years then In Trust for such person or persons as she my said daughter shall by any deed or instrument in writing to be by her sealed and delivered in the presence of two or more reliable Witnesses or by the last Will and Testament or by any writing purporting to be by her assigns and published in the presence of the like number of Witnesses and notwithstanding any Coverture direct limit or appoint give or devise the same and in default of such direction limitation or appointment gift or devise In Trust for my said daughter her executors and admors.

And as for all the residue of my monies securities for money and all my household furniture Goods Chattels and other my personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever after and subject to the payment of my just debts and funeral and testamentary charges and expenses I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my Executors hereinafter named their executors and admors. Upon Trust to permit and suffer authorise and empower she my said Wife and her assigns during her life to have the free use and enjoyment but not the absolute disposal of all my household furniture

And also to have receive and take the dividends interest and annual proceeds of all my monies securities for money and my personal estate for her and their own use and benefit and from and after the decease of my said wife I give and bequeath all my said personal estate unto my said daughter Christian Holmes her executors and admors. for her and their own absolute use and benefit provided she my said daughter shall survive my said wife or shall be married during the lifetime of my said wife But if my said daughter shall die in the lifetime of my said wife unmarried then from and after such the decease of my said daughter I give and bequeath all my said personal estate unto my said wife her executors and admors. for her and their own use absolutely

And I do appoint my said Wife and my Brother John Holmes Executors of this my Will hereby revoking all former wills by me made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of February in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and nineteen

Signed and sealed by the said George Holmes the Testator and by him published and declared as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence at his request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as Witnesses

This is a Codicil to be annexed to and taken as part of the last Will and Testament of me George Holmes of Margate in the Isle of Thanet in the County of Kent Mariner bearing date the twenty seventh day of February One thousand eight hundred and nineteen

Whereas since the date and execution of my said Will I have built and erected upon a plot or parcel of and in Fort Crescent in Margate aforesaid purchased by me of Claude Benezet? Esquire and others a messuage or Tenement with outbuildings thereto now I do hereby give and devise the same piece or parcel of land and messuage or Tenement with the appurtenances unto and to the use of the same persons and in the same manner in all respects as I have in and by my said Will given and devised all my real estates and as the same would have gone in case such purchase had been made by me previous to the date and execution of my said Will

And I do hereby give and bequeath to Jethro Sandwell Son of my late father in law Jethro Sandwell during his life one Annuity or yearly sum of five pounds of lawful money of Great Britain clear of all legacy duty and all other deductions to be paid to him or otherwise applied for his maintenance and support in such manner as the Executors for the time being of my said Will shall judge most for his advantage and comfort And I do subject and charge all my residuary personal estate with the payment of such annuity

And lastly I do hereby in all other respects ratify and confirm my said Will In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of February in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty six

Proved at London with a Codicil the 3rd of May 1827 before the Judge by the oaths of Elizabeth Holmes Widow the Relict & John Holmes the Brother the Executors to whom Admon. [Administration] was granted having been first sworn by Comon. [Commission] duly to admin. [administer]

Notes:
George Holmes was buried at St. John the Baptist, Margate on 10th March 1827, aged 60.
His wife Elizabeth was also buried at Margate on 11th July 1842, aged 75.
George Holmes was christened 8th Jun 1766, s. of George and Christiana Holmes at St, Mary of Charity, Faversham, Kent.
Their known children (all christened at Faversham):
22 Apr 1764 Elizabeth; 08 Jun 1766 George; 27 Dec 1768 Christian (d. of); 24 Dec 1771 John; 12 Mar 1773 Jane; 20 Oct 1776 Mary; 24 Dec 1780 John.
George Holmes (of the Will) married Elizabeth Sandwell 23rd March 1792 at Faversham. Their children�s christenings are NOT found at present.
Daughter Christian Holmes married Frederick Gore on 1st September 1836 at Margate.
