In the name of God Amen Anno dini 1610 The xi day of October in the yeare of th raygne of ou Souraigne Lord James by the Grace of god of England France and Ireland King Defender of the fayth ye viij and of Scotland the xliiij
I Percifall Holnes of Tenterden of the dioces of Canterbury being sicke and weake in body but of sound mind and p�fecte remembrance I prayse god therefore through Christe doe make and ordeyne this my last will and testament in manner and forme hereundr following
First I commend my Soule to Allmightie god my Creator wth full assurance of forgiveness of all my sinnes through the death passion precious blood sheading merrits and obedience of Jesus xpe. [Christ] my only Saviour and redeemer
Item I will my body to the earth to bee buried in xpeane [christian] buriall And of that smale porcons of worldly good wch [which] god hath committed to me I thence dispose vizt.

Imprimis I will gyve and bequeath to these children here notated being the sonnes and daughters of my sonnes and daughters and my godchildren to every of them ten shillings apeece vizt to Jeames Holmes xs to John Holmes xs to Thomas Simmond? xs and John Day xs

Item I will appoynt and ordeyne that these foure legacies of xs apeece bee well and truly payde to those children wthin two yeares after my decease by my daughter Rose Holnes yf theire parents or neeces freendes will make her for all and sufficient acquittances of and for the receipts of the said legacies otherwise that they whose frendes refuse soe to doe shall staye tyll they come to theire sea�all [severall] age of one and twenty yeares when they shalbee able to make acquittances themselves

Item I will gyve and bequeath to my two daughters Elisabeth Swinhard and Joane Day to eyther of them xs wch I will that mine Executor hereinafter named shall bestowe eithr in linnen or woollen for their use at their choyce wch I will shalbee soe bestowed wthin one yeare next after my decease

Item I will gyve and bequeath to Emblenne my wife the use of all my househoulde stuffe during her naturall lyffe And after her decease I will and gyve the sayd househoulde stuffe of myne to my daughter Rose to the use of her and her heires and assignes for ever

Item I will and bequeath to my Sonne Peter Holmes xs as his part and portion of my moveable goods to bee payd by mine executor wthin one yeare next after my decease

In Witnes whereof I the sayd Percifall Holnes have hereunto sett my hand and seale

This is the last will of mee Percifall Holnes made and declared the daye and yeare first above written Touching and concerning my messuages tents. [tenements] lands & hereidtaments whatsoever in the p�ishes of Tenterden aforesayd and Apledore in the same County

first I will gyve and bequeath to Emblen my wife ye house I now dwell in wth the orchard and appurtenances hereof during her Naturall life conditionallie that shee shall keepe yt wth resonable and convenient repayracons wthout strippe or wast and after her decease I will gyve and bequeath it to my sonne John Holnes and to his heires in fee simple for ever

Item I will give and bequeath my tenement at Smales in the occupation where Roger Knight nowe dwelleth wth the orchards and appurtenances thereof to my Daughter Rose Holnes and to her heires in fee simple for ever immediatly after my decease conditionally that shee shall paye the forty shillings aforesayd vizt the foure legacies as is aforesayd
And also I will that my wife Emblin soe longe as she keepeth her selfe a widowe shall have tenne shillings every yeare out of the house and orchard aforesayd

Item I will and ordeyne that if Rose my daughter or any other for her so offer to sell alienate or conveye awaye the sayd tenement & orchard wth there appurtenances That then my sonne John hayvng to borrowe and payeing her xxtie powndes shall enter uppon the sayd tente. and orcahrd wthall and singler [singular] theire appurtenances and shall have hould and enioye yt to him and to his heires in fee simple for ever anything here afore scerified [certified?] to the contrary notwithstanding

Item I constitute ordeyne and make the sayd John Holnes my sonne my sole executor of this my last will and testament To whome I gyve all my goods cattells and chattells except my legacies and gifts wch bee p�ticularly gyven ordered ad disposed of other wise

Item I will gyve and bequeath the wholl yeerly rent and p�ffitt of my messuage or tenement and the backside wth thappurtenances lying and being in Apledore aforesayd conteyning by estimacon halfe an acre of land more or lesse nowe in the tenure or occupcon of one [gap] Bricke and John Brockman and uppon which they nowe dwell To my sonne John Holnes aforesayd mine executor for the terme and Pasall? of [blank] imediately after my decease conditionally that he the sayd John shall well and truly paye or cause to bee payd all my debts dues and dutyes whatsoever wch maye lawfully be demanded of mee by any person or p�sons And all my legacies before bequeathed wch he is to paye I mean the legacies to bee excepted wch my daughter Rose is to paye

And also uppon condicon that he the sayd John Holnes shall dischardge my funerall expences and see mee honestly buried And likewise that hee shall see and p�vide that my aforesayd Tente. the p�ffit whereof uppon these Condicons and consideracons I have willed and given unto him for twenty yeeres as aforesayd bee sufficiently maynteyned Supported and kept repayred amended and nicklosed?

Item after the sayd twenty yeares expired compleate and ended I will gyve and bequeath the sayd tenement and the backside wthall and singler their appurtenaces to my two sonnes John Holnes and Peter Holnes aforesayd to bee equally devided betwixt them and to be had held inioyed of and to them and to theire heires in fee simple for ever

Notes:
Percivall Holnes was the son of John Holnes of Bethersden. His christening is not found � it pre-dates Bethersden parish registers (which commence in 1563). A brother John Holnes, son of John, was christened there 12 Feb 1563.
See father John Holne�s Will:
PRC 17/51/175 Will of John Holnes, Yeoman of Bethersden Dated 30th March 1597 who was buried at St. Margaret, Bethersden on 7th April 1597 and whose Will was Proved 8th April 1597.

Percivall Holnes married Emlen Wells 7th Jan 1589 at St. Margaret, Bethersden.
Their known children (all christened Bethersden):
Joane 19 Jun 1580; John 10 Feb 1582; Abraham 12 Oct 1589; Rose 26 Dec 1591.
Percivall and Emblen�s burials are not currently found.
Daughter Joane Holnes married Peter Day 23 May 1608 at Tenterden.
Elizabeth Holne�s marriage to a �Swinherd�? is not found.
Daughter Rose Holnes married Richard Wacher at Bethersden on 21 Jun 1614.
Son Peter Holnes married Margaret Austen at Tenterden on 1 Jun 1602.
