In the name of God Amen the tenth day of Apryll in the nine and thirtyth yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lady Elizabeth, by the grace of God of England, Fraunce and Ireland, Quene, defender of the fayth &c. [1597]
I Richard Joade of Burchington wthin the Ile of Thanet in the Countye of Kent Yoman sicke in body but of p[er]fect remembrannce (thancks be to God) doe make my last Will or Testament as followeth
First I comyt my soule into the hands of God hopinge to be saved by thonely [the only] merryts of christe and my bodye unto the earth

Item I give towards the rep[ar]ation of the p[ar]ishe church of Burchington aforesaid xs [10s]
Item I give to the poore people of Burchington aforesaid vj bh [bushels] of wheate and vj of Barly to be distributed amongst them wthin one moneth after my decease by the discretion of Isaacke Dogget, John Underdowne & Henry Prowd of Burchington aforesaid

Item I give unto Jane Forde my servant xls of lawfull englishe money and my little twoyerninge redd heyfor to be paid and delyvered unto her wthin six weeks next after my decease
Item I doe give unto Rachell Baileye my servannt twentye shillings to be paid to her when she shall accomplishe thadge of sixtene yeres and yf she shall happen to dye before she shall accomplishe the said adge then I will the said xxs to remayne to my Executors equallye to be shifted
Item I doe give unto the Residue of my servannts xijd a peice

And whereas about the fyth daye of May last past I receaved of Mr. Smyth of New Romney by the appointment or request of my servannt Nichas Standered xxxvijli [£37] w[hi]ch did acrewe or growe due unto him from or by Edward Standered lately deceased father of the said Nichas That my will is that my Executor shall pay the said xxxvijli unto the said Nichas Standard his heires Executors Administrators or Assignes wthin three moneths after my decease

Item I doe give unto William Joad the sonne of Andrew Joad my sonne fortye shillings of lawfull money of England to be paid unto him when he shall accomplishe his full adge of xviij yeres
And yf he shall happen to dye before he shall accomplishe the said age then I will the same to Eve, Joane & Alice Jode, Systers of the said William Joade equally amongst them to be shifted
And I doe give unto the said Eve, Joane & Alice Jode ten shillings a peice to be paid unto evry of them at her several adge of xviij yeres And yf any of the said Eve, Joane & Alice happen to dye before her accomplishment of her or their before lymitted adge then I will her or their said p[ar]te or pts to remayne to the Survivors or Survivor of them, And yf all the said Eve, Joane & Alice happen to dye before any of them accomplishe the said adge then I will their said legacyes unto William Joad their said brother yf he shalbe then lyvinge
And yf the said William shalbe then dead Then I will all and singuler the said legacyes soe as aforesaid bequethed unto the said William, Eve, Joane and Alice shall wholy remayne unto Andrewe Joad my said sonne

Item I doe give and bequeth unto Eve my wife one hundred pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto her wthin six moneths next after my decease Provided allwayes that yf my said wife happen to dye wthin the said six moneths then I doe give and bequeth the said one hundred pounds as followeth, vix
Fyftye pounds thereof hereof unto my two daughters Joane & Eve equally betwene them to be shifted and the same to be paid unto them wthin three yeres then next following
And thother fyftye pounds residue thereof unto my three sonnes Andrewe, Nicolas and Richard equally amongst them to be shifted and the pt or portion thereof to be paid unto the said Richard when he shall accomplishe his full adge of xxjtie yeares

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my said Wyfe the geldinge wheron she usually rydeth, wthall his furniture, iij of my best kyne, one sowe, fower lyve ware?, twoo barron hoggs, one dozen of the best pewter, my best bedsted, fetherbed and bolster wthall the furniture thereto p[er]teyninge as the same most comonly standeth, one flockbed wthall the furniture thereto, six payer of sheetes whereof iij payer of the best & iij payer of the middle sort, one dozen and a halfe of the best napkins, iij tableclothes, whereof two of my fynest & two of the myddle sort, Fower pyllowcoates, whereof two of the best and two of the middle sort, A brasses pot, a kettle and a stupnett of the middle sort, all wch houshold stuffe to be delyvered unto my said wyfe wthin six moneths next after my decease

Item I doe allsoe give and bequeath unto my said wyfe six quarters of good wheat to be delyvered unto her at Kebbles in Ashe at St. Michaell tharchangell next ensuinge my decease And six quarters of Barlye to be delyvered allso to her at Kebbles aforesaid at Thannunciation of our Ladye then next followinge
Provided allsoe that yf my said wife hapen to dye before the said lymitted tyme or tymes in wch the said wheat and barly is or are appointed to be delyvered, That then I will the same wheat or barly soe undelyvered shall remayne equally unto my two Executors And allsoe I will that my Executors shall carry or cause to be carryed for her unto Kebbles aforesaid all the said houshold stuffe before to her bequethed at any convenient tyme or tymes when she shall request

Item I doe give and bequeath unto Richard Jode my sonne one hundred and fyftye pounds of lawfull englishe money to be paid unto him when he shall accomplishe his full adge of twenty and one yeares And yf my said sonne Richard Joade happen to dye before he shall accomplishe his said adge of xxj yeres Then I will and bequeath the said one hundred and fyftye pounds unto my two Executors equally betwene them to be shifted and devyded

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my daughter Eve fowerskore pounds of lawfull money of England to be paid unto her in or uppon the day of her mariadge or adge of xviij yeares the wch shall first happen
Provided allwayes that yf my said daughter Eve happen to dye before she shall accomplishe her adge of xviij yeres and unmaryed Then I give and bequeath fortie pounds thereof unto my daughter Joane Rose to be paid unto her at such tyme as the said Eve my daughter should have accomplished the said adge of xviij yeres yf she had lyved thereunto
And I give and bequeath thew other fortye pounds thereof unto my three sonnes Andrewe, Nichas and Richard and to the Survivors or Survivor of them Provided allwayes that my sonne Richard shall have his pte or portion thereof when he shall accomplishe his full adge of xxj yeres and not before

Item I doe give and bequeath unto my daughter Joane Rose thirtene pounde six shillings & eight pence of lawfull money of England to be paid unto her wthin two yeres next after my decease And yf my said daughter Joane happen to dye before the said tyme before the said tyme Then I doe give and bequeath the said xiijli vjs viijd unto the childe which my said daughter nowe goeth wthall to be paid at the end of the sayd two yeres unto Henry Rose my sonne in lawe unto the use of the said child
And yf the said childe happen in like sorte to dye wthin the said two yeares then I doe give and bequeath the said xiijli vjs viijd unto my said iij sonnes Andrewe, Nicolas and Richard equally amongst them to be shifted and the said Richard to receave his pte thereof when he shall accomplishe his adge of xxj yeares And yf any of them happen to dye before the tyme in wch my said sonne Richard should have accomplished the said adge of xxj yeares, Then the same to remayne to the Survivors or Survivor of them

Item my will and minde is that my Executors shall at their costs and chardgs wthout deduction or demaund of allowance for the same keepe at schole wth convenient meat drincke apparell and other things needfull my said sonne Richard duringe the space of fower yeres next after my decease yf my said wyfe soe longe shall lyve But And after the end of the said fower yeres shall for and towards his mayten[a]nce to schole in like sorte at their costs and chardgs wthout demaund of allowance for the same, disburse and lay owt yerely uppon my said sonne Richard Fyve pounds of lawfull englishe money untill my said sonne Richard shall accomplishe his said adge of xxj yeres yf my said wyfe shall soe longe lyve

Item I doe give and bequeath unto Nicolas Joad my sonne two hundred pounds of lawfull englishe money to be paid wthin two yeres next after my decease
The Residue of all my goods and Chattells unbequeathed, my Leasse onely except after my debts paid and my legacyes dischadged and funeralls p'formed I doe give unto my two sonnes Andrew and Nicolas equally betwene them to be shifted and delivered

And I do ordeigne constitute and make my said two sonnes Andrewe and Nicolas Executors of this my laste Will and testamente

Provided allwayes and my will and minde is that my sayd sonne Andrewe uppon reasonable requeste (for the better securitye and sure paymente of the sayd two hundred pounds unto my said sonne Nicolas) by the space of fower dayes at the least before the proving of this my last Will or Testamente stand bounden by a good and sufficient obligation in lawe in fower hundred pounds of like money unto the sayd Nicholas my sonne his Executors and Assignes wth a conditcion thereuppon endorsed for the true payment of the said CCli unto the said Nicolas my sonne his Executors or Assignes wthin the aforesaid lymitted tyme of two yeres,
The wch yf my foresaid sonne Andrewe being thereunto reasonably required refuse to doe Then I doe give and bequeath all th'aforesaid Residue of all my said goods and Cattells soe as aforesaid unbequeathed (my said Leasse onely except) unto my said sonne Nicolas whome then I make and ordeigne sole Executor of this my last Will or Testament

This is the laste will or Testament of me the sayd Richard Joad, made the day and yeare first above written as conceninge all my Messuages or Ten[emen]ts, lands and hereditaments scytuat [situate] or beinge in Ashe next Sandwich, Elmestone, Stourmouth, Herne, Wingham, Wickhambreux or any of them wthin the said county of Kent

First that Eve my said wife shall from and after the feaste of St. Michaell Tharchangell next ensuinge my decease untill my sonne Richard shall accomplishe his full adge of twenty and one yeres yf my wife shall soe longe lyve have hold and enjoy my Messuage or Ten'te knowne or called by the name of Kebbles Scytuate or beinge in Hodenstreete in Ashe aforesaid and all the lands and hereditaments thereto p[er]teyninge wth thapptenncs [the appurtenances] scytuate lyenge and beinge in Aishe & Elmestone or eyther of them, she keepinge the sayd messuage or Tente and all and singler the edicies and buildings thereof sufficiently repaired and payenge (the) lords rents thereof wthout strip nor waste by her to be comitted uppon the same,

And imediately after my said sonne Richard Jode shall fully accomplishe his said adge of twenty and one yeares I doe give & bequeath my said messuage or Tent called or knowne by the name of Kebbles and all and singuler the said Lands and hereditaments thereto pteyninge wth the apurtenncs to my said sonne Richard To have and to hold the messuage or Tent Lands and hereditaments thereto pteyninge wth the apurtenncs unto my said sonne Richard his heires and assignes for ever

Item I doe appointe my said wife to receave all the profitts and yerely rentes and revenewes of my two messuages or Tents orchards Lands scytuat or beinge at Hodestrete in Ashe aforesaid or els where in Aishe aforesaid and nowe in the severall tennures or occupations of John Sexton and Thomas Worshe or eyther of them their or either of their Assignes untyll my said sonne Richard shall accomplishe his said full adge of xxj yeres
And of the said profytts Rentes and Revennues shall make unto my said sonne Richard a true and p[er]fect Accompt at his said adge of xxj yeres uppon wch I will that she allowe her selfe of and for such resonable chardges as she shall layout about the rep[ar]ations of the said two messuages or Tents and edifices to the same or payeinge of the Lords Rents or otherwyse in behalfe of my said sonne and the overplus thereof remayninge shall then (be) payd unto my said sonne Richard

And imediatly after my said sonne Richard shall have fully accomplished his said adge of xxj yeres then I will that my said wife shall have hold and enjoye for (the) terme of her naturall lyfe aswell the said two messuages or Tents Orchards and lands now in the sevrall tenures or occupations of the said John Sexton and Thomas Worsh or eyther of them their or eyther of their Assignes as allsoe all the p[ar]lor at my said messuage called Kebbles wth a meet and convenyent cometh thereto adjoyninge to lay her burninge or fewell [fuel] and lib[er]tye and access to the brewhouse well and oven there wth free egresse and regresse to bake brewe washe and doe all other needfull things, she keepinge the repations of the said two messuages or Tents and payenge the lords Rents yssuing owtt of the same and the lands to eythr of them pteyning

And I will that imediatly after my wyfes decease the said two messuages or Tents Orchards & lands wth thappurtenncs nowe in the sevrall tenures or occupations of the said John Sexton and Thomas Worshe or eyther of them their or eithr of their Assignes shall remaine & be and I doe give & bequeath the same unto the said Richard my sonne To have & to holde the said prmisses wth thappurtenncs unto the said Richard his heires and Assignes for evr

Provided allwayes that yt shall & may be lawfull and I doe give unto my said wyfe six reasonable waggon load of fewell yerely to be had or taken by her or her Assignes or uppon any of my lands in Ashe or Elmestone aforesaid by Topping of Ashes, Willowes, Maples or any of them or felling downe of dead trees for needfull & necessary fewell or burning for & during the terme of her naturall lyfe to be Spent wthin the said p[ar]ler and not els Where
And also that yt shall and may be lawfull to and for my said wyfe or her Assignes to fell downe needfull tymber such as may conveniently be Spared in or uppon any of my lands in Aishe or in Elmestone aforesaid to be imployed uppon th'only repations of all and singuler my said messuages or Tents edifices and buildings or any of them scituat or beinge in Aishe aforesaid

Provided allsoe that yf my said Wyfe be not contented wth this my last Will or Testament but doe by Wryt of Dower or otherwyse demaund any joynture dower or widdowe right owt of any of my messuages or Tents lands Tents or Hereditaments whatsoever That then my said Wyfe shall have receyve or enjoy noe benefit Gyfte or legacy by this my last Will or Testament any thinge before conteyned to the contrary thereof in any Wyse not wthstandinge

Item I doe give and bequeath unto Andrewe Joade my sonne my Tent and all my landes in Wickham and Wickhambreux or either of them wthin the County of Kent and all that one peice and p[ar]cell of m[a]rshe land conteyning by estimation six acres be yt more or lesse wth thappurtenncs situate lyeng or beinge in St[o]urmouth aforesaid adjoyninge unto th'old Stower To have and to hold the said Tents lands and the said one pcell of marsheland wth thappurtenncs unto the said Andrewe Joade his heires and Assignes for ever

Item do give and bequeathe unto Nicholas Joade my sonne all that my messuage or Tenement edifices buildinges gardens lands pastures and hereditaments whatsoever scituat lyenge or beinge in Herne aforesaid with thappurtenncs To have and to hold the said messuage or Tenement edifices buildinges gardens lands pastures and hereditaments with thappurtenncs unto the saide Nicholas Jode his heires and assigns for ever

In Witnes whereof I the saide Richard Jode have caused this my last will or Testament to be made written & openlye declared, And by the same doe utterly revoke and renounce all former willes or Testaments whatsoever by me made And unto this my present last will or testament have sett my hande and seale in the presence of the witnesses hereunder wrytten this present will beinge thereto firste annexed

Inprimis I will that all my aforesaid last will or Tenement shall stand and be in force
And for further declaracon of my mynde therin I will that of my saide wife happen to dye before my saide sonne Richard shall accomplishe his saide age of xxj yeres
That then my said two sonnes Andrewe and Nicholas and the Survivor of them shall receave and take up unto the use of my said sonne Richard all the yssues Rents and yerelie profitts of all my saide messuages or Tenements lands and hereditaments scituat or beinge in Ashe and Elmestone aforesaide untill my saide sonne Richarde shall accomplishe his saide age of xxj yeres and therewithall shall kepe to Scoole my saide sonne Richarde and also repaire all and singuler the said messuages or Tenements and paie all the lords Rents well and sufficientlie untill my saide sonne Richarde shall accomplishe his saide age
And that my said two sonnes Andrewe and Nicholas or either of them shall in no wise or sort stande charged with keping my saide sonne Richarde to Scoole boarding or apparrelling of hym from the deathe of my saide wif untill he shall accomplishe his saide age of xxj yeres
And that at his said age my saide two sonnes Andrewe and Nicholas and the Survivor of them shall instlie [instantly] make unto my saide sonne Richard an Accompte and then paie all suche overplus of profitts yerely rents and Revenewes so had and receaved by them or either of them (if any shalbe in their or either of their hands)

Ricus Johad paterfamils was buried at All Saints, Birchington, Kent on 14th April 1597.
Daughter Joane Joade married Henry Rose 23 Sep 1595 at Birchington.
30 Oct 1598, Eva Jode married Bartholomew Joye at Elmstone
27 Sep 1599, Eve Joad, widow of Birchington married Robert Bargrow, tanner of Willesborough at St Mary Bredman, Canterbury by licence
