In the name of God Amen the xxiiijth daye of October in the yeare of our Lorde God a thousand five hundred lxiil [1563]
I John Kempe of the Towne of Lyd [Lydd] in the Countye of Kent Jurat sycke in boddye but of good and p�fect Remembrance Thankes bee unto god doe make & ordayne this my laste Wyle & Testament in manner & forme followinge
Firste I bequethe my Soule to Allmightye God and my boddy to bee buryed in the churche yarde of the parishe churche of Lyd aforesaide

Item I give & bequethe to the poore mens boxe of the said pyshe [parish] of Lyd iijs iiijd
Item I give and bequethe unto the Reparacons of the churche of Lyd xxs to bee paide wthin [within] one hole yere nexte after my decease

Item I give and bequethe unto William Kempe my sonne foure Ayngell nobles * of tenne shillings the pece, my damaske Jacquet, my best red Sylke dublet a fetherbed wth [with] all thinges belonginge to the same two paire of mye beste sheetes, two Kyne whereof one was given Unto him my his Oncle Thoms. Item I give and bequethe unto the said Willm my sonne a dousen [dozen] of pewter of all sorts one bras pot one great kettle, two greate Candlestickes, three sylver spones wthe Apostell hedes wch [which] were his grandfathers

Item I give and bequethe to Amye Kempe mye daughter tenn poundes of Lawfull moneye of Englande to bee paide to her at the daye of her mariage
Item I give and bequethe Unto the same Amye my daughter one fetherbede An all thinges belonginge to the same, two paire of the nexte beste sheetes & one christeninge sheete, half a dosen of pewter of all sortes two of the nexte beste candlestickes and one Kettle & one bras pott & ij kein [kyne]

And yf yt fortune the saide William my sonne to dye before he come to the age of twentye and one yeares, Or the said Amye my daughter to dye before shee fortune to bee marryede, That then I wyll the onliver of them both to bee thothers heire of suche porcon as bye this my laste Will and Testament ys to them bequeathede

Item I give & bequethe to John Grigersbye my godsonne fortye shillinges to bee paide when he shall come to thage of xviijteen [18] yeres

And I ordaine and appointe Nicholas Pyxe of Lyd Jurat and John Peynot thelder Overseers of the same, Thee being Wytnes

And as to mye Landes and Tementes this ys the laste Wyll and Testamente of mee the said John Kempe made and declarede the daye and yere firste above Wrytten / That ys to saye /

fyrste I Wyll And my mynde is that Margerye mye Wyf shalhave my principall Tenement That ys to saye viij Acres and a half belonginge to the same duringe all the terme of her naturall lyf shee kepinge the same wthout Stripe of Waste; And after her decease I give the same unto William Kempe my sonne To bee had to him his heires and Assignes for ever

Item I Wyll and mye mynde ys that mye littell Tenement in the whiche Robert Farneborowe now dwelleth next adyoyninge to mye principall Tenement shall allwaye(s) from hense forthe for ever Remayne And bee Used for a dwelling house for some honest poore boddye of Lyd to dwell in And to bee sett in from tyme to tyme as occason [occasion] shall serve, at the dyscracon [discretion] of suche as shalbee owner or dweller in mye saide princypall Tenement And bye the oversighte and consent of the baylyfs and Jurats of Lyd aforesiade for the tyme beinge And that suche honest poore boddye as shall from tyme to tyme have dwellinge in the same lyttell Tenement shall dwell freelye therein wthout payinge anye terme for the same

And also I Wyll that suche as shalbee heires or heriess of or to mye princypall Tenement from hensforth for ever shall kepe and maytaine the Reparacons of the same lyttell Tenement And paye the yerlye Rent to the cheef Lorde of the fee; And yf the same lyttell Tenement shall at anye tyme Rime to Ruyne [as in come to ruin] and decaye after sufficient arninge to bee given bye the Baylyfs and Jurates of Lyd the the tyme beinge to suche as shalbee heires or dwelling in mye saide princypall Tenement, That then yt shalbe lawfull for the baylyf and Jurates of the towne Or Chamberlens of the same for the tyme beinge to enter into my principall Tenement And there to dystraine for so much in value as shalbee nedefull to amende and reapire the saide littell Tennement tennant looke

Item I give and bequethe unto the forsaide Willm Kempe mye sonne mye two lydeall [little?] groundes And my dabon? at the dayes too bee had To the said Willm Kempe his heires and Assignes for ever

Item mye Wyll and mynde ys that John Paynot of Lyd thelder Or John Paynot his sonne shall have the occupacon of my saide two lyddall groundes at the coopse [copse?] Untill my sonne William Kempe shall cum to thage of Eighteene yeeres, paying therefore yerlye thirtye shillinges of lawfull monnye of Englande to my said Executryxe And yf my said sonne William Kempe shall not bee mynded to pccupye the said lyddall groundes him selfe When he shall come [to] the saide thage of xviijteen yeeres Then I Wyll and mye mynde ys that John Paynot the younger shalhave the occupacon thereof before anye other for his reasonable monnye

And yf the said Willm Kempe shalbee mynded to occupye the same lyddall grounndes him slefe When he shall come to thage of xviijteen yeres, Then I Wyll that he shall give Warninge Unto the said John Paynot hys Executors or assignes bye one hole yere before he shall enter into the same

Notes:
Parish Registers start 1540 for burials, 1542 for christenings and marriages at All Saints, Lydd - so it should be possible to find John�s family. They are not on FindmyPast or FamilySearch.

* An �angel-noble� was the gold coin of the realm, and, in 1550 was worth 10 shillings (half a pound).
A Jurat in Kent was a municipal officer of the cinque ports (of which Lydd was NOT one, but nearby Rye in East Sussex was) � and is the equivalent of an Alderman � a worthy person of the council � in the 16th Century.
