In the name of God Amen the xxvijth daye of November in the one and fortyeth yeare of the Raygne of our Souraigne Ladye Elizabeth by the grace of god of England France & Ireland Queene Defender of the Faith etc. Anno Dini. 1598
I John Kempe of Wye in the countie of Kente Esquiyer being whole of bodye and of perfect remembrance praised be god do make and ordeyne this my Last will and testament in manner and forme followinge
First I will and bequeath my Soule to allmightye god trustinge assuredlye through the meritts & passion of Christ Jesus to be partaker of the glorye eternall my bodye I will to be buryed neere to the place where my wyfe was buryed at the discretion of my Exor [Executor]

Item I will and bequeath to the poor people of Wye aforesayd Tenn pownds of Currant Englishe moneye to be distributed wthin one moneth after my Decease by the discretion of my Exor.
Item I give to Mr. Jackson Minister of Wye aforesayd the sume of Tenn powndes of Currant English moneye to be payde within a quarter of a yeare after my deceasse yf he be Curat of Wye at that tyme ; & I give to him more for his sermon at my buriall xxs to be p�sentlye [presently] payde

Item I will and bequeathe to the reparacons of Wye Churche the sume of Tenn powndes of Currant Englishe moneye to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I will and bequeathe more to the poor people of the parrish of Wye Twentye ponnds of Currant Englishe moneye to be payd within one yeare after my Deceasse unto suche sufficient men of the same parrish as my executors shall thinke well of That the profitt by the same moneye Levyed maye redowed to a yearley benefitt of the poore for ever

Item I will and bequeathe to my Brother Francis Kempe the some of one hundreth ponnds of lawfull Englishe moneye to be payde within one yeare after my Deceasse Item I will and bequeathe unto my Nephew Thomas Kemp of Olentyghe Esqiyer all such arrerages as and shalbe due unto me upon two several Annities [Annuities] the one of Twentye marks by the yeare and the other of fortye markes by the yeare granted out of the Mannor of Bennyngton by my Brother Sir Thomas Kemp Knight late of Olentyghe deceassed [he was buried at Wye on 22nd March 1590]

I give and bequeath to my Nephew Thomas Kemp of Olentyghe the furniture nowe in my parlour that is to saye one Joyned Table with fower drawers, & an other square table Joyned with a cubbard in yt one Joyned Chayer of wallnutternee [Walnut] a payer of greate Lattin Andyrons a payer of crepers? a fyer panne & a payer of tonges with brasse heads, two little stooles and a lowe chayer covered with suficient stuffe of blewe velvett a Court cupbord of wallnuttree with all the wenscott & hangings as yt nowe standeth furnished

Item I give unto the same my Nephewe all the furniture in the chamber above the parrlor; that is one Joyned Bedstedle with the bedd lyinge thereon a payer of Spanishe blannketts and a fustian blannkett two bowlsters, & two pyllowes five Curtins of Carrell with a covering of Norwich? makinge yellowe & greene; a Courte Cubbard of wallnutture with ij drawers a greene chayer embrodered; a Lowe chayre covered with blewe velvett; two lowe stooles covered with needle worke, two curtens of greene save for the wyndows, the hangings of the Chamber & a payer of creapers?

Item I give unto him in the hawle a longe Joyned table, two formes, a Courte cubbord of wallnuttree a payer of great iron Cobyrons? a Latin sconce hanginge there and two stript sackcloth curtens I give unto him allso in the chamber where I lye all the hanginges of the Chamber, the great Cipers [Cypress?] Chest, and in the clossett my merchante cubbord and I give unto him in the parlour seven Joyned Stooles covered with mockadoe, and seven Coushons thre of Vardare? and fower of niddle [needle!] worke / and I give unto him in the Larder a plate Cubbard
Item I give unto him one Ringe of golde to be made with a deaths head on yt of the price of xls

Item I will & bequeath to my Nephew Thomas Kemp�s wyfe of Olentyghe one Jewell of golde with two Diamonds therein one syxe square the other fower square with a dyal thereon
Item I give unto her a rynge of golde with a deaths head thereon of the price of xxs

Item I give to my Neece Anne Kemp my Nephew Thomas Kemp his eldest daughter two payer of fine holland sheetes , a dozen Dyper napkins, a square table cloth, & a towell of Dyper
Item I give unto my Neece Dorretye Kempe my sylver tankard
Item I give to my Neece Anne Kempe halfe a dozen of Sylver Spoones with gilte handles and a trencher salt sylver & gylte, with a taster of sylver
Item I give to my Neece Marye Kempe a next of Silver Cuppes? with an cover to them Sylver and gilte

Item I will and bequeath to my Nephew Raynolde Kemp Fyftye pownds of Currant Englishe moneye in stedd of my househould stuffe which heretofore I purposed to have given him to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I give unto him my Cloake as yt now standeth in the hawle, and I give unto him a ringe of gold with a deaths head of the price of xxs
Item I gyve unto my Nephew Raynold Kempe his wife a ringe of gold with a deaths head of the price of xxs
Item I give unto John Kemp my godsonne my great Sylver Salt with the cover thereunto, and a dozen of great silver spoones with the Kempe Sheafe graven on them

Item I will and bequeath unto my Nephew Ezechias Fogge Fyftye pownds of Currant Englishe moneye
and to his sonne William Fogge my godsonne Tenn pownds of like Lawfull money of England to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I give to my Nephew Fogge afore named the bedd whereon I nowe lye, the bedsteddle nowe used with the same the Canapye teaster with the Curtens & Curtenrods as it nowe standeth my Coverlett of Arras worke, three Spannishe blanketts & a fustian blankett, two bowlsters & two payer of pillowes, and the Truckle bed goeinge under yt with the Cord thereunto
Item I give unto him a Rynge with my Seale of Arms
Item I give unto him my two Silver bowles parcell gylt
Item I give unto him my greate chafinge dish with the safter?
Item I give unto him sixe payer of sheetes, and all my Linnen, brasse and pewter which is not by name in this my will appoynted, nor mentioned in a Bill which Mr. Drewer? hath under my hand & Seale and in the Custodie of the sayd Ezekiahas Fogge
Item I give unto him a Ringe of gold of the pryce of xls [40 shillings] to be made with a deaths head thereon

I give unto my Nephew Ezekiahas Fogge his wyfe a Ringe of gold with a deaths head of the pryce of xxs

Item I will & bequeath unto my Nephew Anthonye Boughton the some of Fortye pownds of Lawfull English money,
& to his daughter Marye Boughton tenn pownds of Lawfull English money to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse

Item I will & bequeath unto my Nephew Dudlye Lyllgrave the summe of Fyftye ponndes of Lawfull English money to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I will & bequeath to Mr. Thomas Moyle of Molashe Tenn pounds of Lawfull money of England to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I will unto my neece Richard Fogges wyddow a rynge of gold with a deaths head thereon of the pryce of Fortye shillings

Item I will to Anne Fogge my Nephew Richard Foggs Daughter Tenn pounnds of Lawfull English money to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I give unto Mrs Drewe my servant Tenn pownds of Lawfull money of England to be paid within one yeare after my deceasse if shee carrye & continue in my service untill I departe this Lyfe
Item I give unto Mrs. Drewe uppon the same conditon the bedsteddle & bedd whereon she lyeth, and all such things as are mentioned in a bill remayninge in the Custodye of my Nephew Ezechias Fogge with myne owne hand and Seale unto yt, the Coppye whereof is in his owne kepynge

Item I will and bequeathe to William Curtes my servant Twentye pownds of Currant Englishe moneye if he tarrye in my service untill my Departure owt of this Lyfe, to be payde within one yeare after my deceasse
Item I give unto him with the same condicion the bedd whereon he lyeth with the furniture nowe thereunto belonginge
Item I give unto him fower payer of sheetes
Item I give unto him my bastard musket with the flaske and tourche? boxe my Spanishe murrian graven, & the girdle sword & dagger to the same
Item I give unto him all my wearinge apparell which is not hereafter in this my will appoynted unto my Nephew Anthonye Boughton
Item I give unto him all my Tooles and Implements & hammers, chissels and suche like
Item I give unto him a Cubbord in the Butterye, a a great ship cheste covered with lether, a bedsteddle over the gatehouse with a Carrell Tester, a longe settle in the hawle chamber, a chayer in the hawle chamber, Two litle tables, one in the chamber where I lye the other in the butterye
Item I give unto him a Coverlett furnished & a bowe & sheafe of Arrowes

I give to Alce Marche my mayde servante xls [40 shillings] of Lawfull English moneye over & above her wages of she carrye and be with me when I departe this Lyfe, to be payd within one moneth after my deceasse

Item I give unto my Nephew Anthonye Boughton one night gowne of Turke grograine * layd with two billement Laces & furred with conys [rabbit], & a blacke clothe cloake furred & Layde with a lace, & a latter [leather?] dubblett, & my Tuffe Taffatee hoase and my Sylke grograime Cassocke
* grograine is a tough silk material, nowadays used for ribbons round hats, etc.
And I give to his wyfe a Turkee grograine gowne with a yard of velvett

Item I give to Francis Hill and to his wyfe and to Goodwyfe Corin? of Wye to eche of them xxs of Lawfull Englishe moneye

Item I give to William Morehouse Roger Master Richard Cooke John Titterden Edward Garrett, & Thomas Coltyshe to eache of them xs of Lawfull English money to be paid within one moneth of my deceasse
Item I give Henrie Penn of Molashe the thre pownds vjs viijd he borrowed of mee, and I give him a payer of course sheetes
Item I give to Goodwyfe Bassocke, to olde Mr. Hawle, & to Goodwyfe Godswill/Godfree? to each of them xs of Lawfull English moneye, and to olde Godwyfe Philpott xs to be payd within one quarter of a yeare after my deceasse

Item I give to Mrs. Nethersole, Mr. Drewes Sister a ringe of gold of the pryce of xls [forty shillings] with a deathes head
Item I give to Mr. Nicholls parson of Eastwell a ringe of gold of xxs pryce with a deathes head on yt

Item I give unto each of them that are the wytnesses of this my Laste Will and Testament a ringe of gold with deathes head upon verye of them of the pryce of xiijs viijd

The residue of my goods & chattles not given & bequeathed by this my Last Will & Testament, my Debts payde, my Legacyes & funerall expenses discharged my will and mynd is that they shalbe & remayne to be disposed as shall best seeme good & convenient by the discretion of my Nephew Thomas Kempe of Olantighe Esquyer, & my Nephew Ezechias Fogge of Chilham both which I make and ordayne executors of this my Last Will and Testament

And touching all & everye the partyes which have any thinge given and appoynted unto them in this my Last Will & Testament and touching the Legacyes & bequeaths herein expressed my will and mynd is that yf any partye shall appeare, or have himselfe discontent or not well pleased with such bequeaths, gyftes or Legacyes as is here in this my Will and Testament bequeathed and appoynted unto him, or shall seeke, demande or require more, or other than is herein expresse wordes sett downe, that then that the same partye or partyes whatsoever shall be utterlye voyd of any gift, or Legacye, in this my Last Will & Testament any thinge heerein expressed or conteyned to the contrarye notwithstandinge and that the same gyft or gyfts, Legaceys or bequeathes of everye such partye or partyes shalbe and remayne to my executors to be disposed at theyre discretions

This is the Last Will and Testament of me the aforesaid John Kemp made and Declared the daye & yeare first above written touchinge & concerninge all my Lands & Tenements within the parisshe of Wye aforesaid

first I will and bequeath to my Nephew Thomas Kemp of Olantighe in Wye afforesayd Esquyer all that my house or Tenement called �Jhoncocke� wherein I nowe dwell in Wye aforesayd, with all gardens, backsydes, closes & other easements with all & Singular the edyfces and buyldings thereunto belongyng, with all & singular thaptinances [the appurtenacnes] To have & to hold to him and his heyres for ever

Item I give & bequeath to Mrs. Drewe my servant my house or Tenement neare to Knockseale in Wye aforesayd purchased of Henrie Proude of Canterburye wherein Robert Fryar & John Kingsland nowe dwell with all the closses, gardens, and backsydes thereunto belonginge, together with all & singuler thaptinances [the appurtenacnes] thereunto To have and to hold to her & to her heyres for ever if she continues in my service and be withe mee as longe as I live in this Worlde

Notes:
There are two inserts in Latin at the end of the Will dated 2nd and 4th Sept. 1599.
The bottom of each sheet is signed by the Testator John Kemp and the Witnesses Thomas Haule Jervase Cooke? and Thomas Cooke.
From SS Martin & Gregory, Wye parish register: 30th July 1599 Buried Mr. John Kemp, Householder.
� 1 mark was worth about 2/3rd�s of a pound in 1599.
